Mallorca's David Navarro Taken To Hospital

The Spanish defender, who has made ten starts for the Islanders this season, suffered a blow just above his eyebrow and was stretchered off the pitch. He will spend the evening under observation but it is believed to be a precautionary measure.

After the recent health scares recently surrounding professional players, doctors in Spain are taking no chances regarding their health. Navarro it is believed will undergo tests to ensure that no permanent damage has occurred.

The incident took place in the 44th minute when a free-kick into the box, and an elbow from one of his own teammates caught Navarro above the eye. He complained of dizziness when being carried from the field during the heavy 3-0 defeat at the hands of Valladolid today, a result which sees Mallorca drop to 15th position, just two points above the relegation zone in the Primera Division.

The turmoil surrounding the collapse of businessman Paul Davidson's proposed takeover of the club appears to have affected the players performances on the pitch, as they have picked up just one win from their last seven fixtures. It doesn't get any easier for Mallorca, either - they face Barcelona, Real Madrid, Sevilla and Villarreal over the Christmas period.

Nihat Makes His Return For Villarreal

Nihat was one of the shining lights of his nations fantastic run to the semi-finals of Euro 2008, but he tore a thigh muscle during the tournament and has struggled to get back to fitness.

He has already declared himself as Villarreal's 'first winter signing', and Pellegrini will no doubt be delighted to have one of his key players available again.

Nihat made a last-minute appearance, replacing Giuseppe Rossi during Los Submarinos Amarillos hard-fought 2-1 victory ove Recreativo Huelva.

The former Real Sociedad frontman's return is all the more timely given that Joseba Llorente has been ruled out for six weeks with an ankle injury meaning Rossi was partnered with youngster Jozy Altidore for today's win.

Pellegrini also has injuries in a number of other positions too. Those also crocked include Robert Pires, Cani, Guille Franco and influential midfielder Marcos Senna.

Nihat's last outing was against Sporting Gijon almost two months ago and the man who manged nineteen goals in all comnpetitions last season as Villarreal finished second in the Primera Division, has managed just two halves of football, so he will feel like a new signing as the men from El Madrigal attempt to keep up with the form of Barcelona.

Kresic: Numancia Just Can't Finish

Sergio Kresic watched as his side failed to score away from home, and it is now only one win from their last seven games, a statistic that is worrying the coach more and more.

Athletic Bilbao beat them 2-0 thanks to a double from Fernando Llorente, and although they were well beaten, Kresic's side missed a number of decent opportunties themselves.

The coach told journalists afterwards, "There were a few cases where we had a chance in front of goal. When the score was 1-0 we pushed forward but left spaces at the back. We just lacked finishing."

The result took Joaquin Caparros' men out of the bottom three and as a result put Numancia down to 18th place, right in the centre of the relegation battle, with just eleven points so far this season.

Kresic went on to say he side "struggled, as always", and he also took time to prasie the architect of Numancia's downfall, newly capped Spanish frontman Llorente.

Speaking about the striker, he said, "He was in the perfect place in those two situations. He had two opportunities, and he took them. On the other hand, we had many chances and we could not take them. We didn't deserve any more than zero points."

Numancia's next outing in the Primera Division is against Almeria next Sunday afternoon.

Guti And Ramos Reach Real Madrid Landmarks

Whatever anyone says about Guti there is no doubt that the Spanish midfielder has been a loyal footballer throughout his career.

Whilst he has often drawn attention for his looks or his off the field activities, tonight, if he plays against Getafe, he will be taking part in his 500th game for Real Madrid.

He first played for the capital club back in December 1995 against Sevilla and tonight he could become only the tenth player to reach the 500 mark for Los Blancos.

He will no doubt be hoping to mark the occasion with a win, and if possible a goal, but he will not be the only one celebrating a landmark amount of games tonight.

Sergio Ramos

Sergio Ramos, the right-back who has lately become used to filling in at centre-back, will play his 150th game for Real Madrid tonight and will more than likely revert back to his maurading full-back position.

The Spanish international, who joined from Sevilla, first played for Real Madrid in September 2005 against Celtic and has come to be regarded as a top talent at the club.

Ramos has been seen as the replacement to Roberto Carlos in the team and at the same marker of 150 games, he has scored two more goals than the Brazilian did.

Assuncao And Leo Franco Return To Atlético XI

It might not be 'must-win' time for Atlético Madrid yet but it's getting close, and this weekend they are widely expected to pick up all three points against Racing Santander.

The UEFA Cup side have been in decent form as of late following a rocky start to the season and Javier Aguirre is putting out his strongest side for their visit to Madrid.

The Mexican is making two changes from the team that beat PSV in the week, with Leo Franco coming in to replace Gregory Coupet in goal and Paulo Assuncao replacing Raúl García in midfield.

Luis Perea is fit but after recovering from injury the coach does not want to risk him so Giourkas Seitaridis will again play at right-back. The full team from the goalkeeper will be; Leo Franco, Seitiaridis, Ujfalusi, Heitinga, Pernía, Maxi Rodríguez, Maniche, Assuncao, Simao, Forlán and Agüero.

Antonio López is still suffering from vertigo although he has been training and is expected to return soon for Atlético.

Los Rojiblancos took part in an extended training session this Saturday as Aguirre gave them a detailed run down of the match tomorrow evening.

Schuster: Money Will Not Win Madrid Any Matches

Real Madrid might be in so called 'crisis' but coach Bernd Schuster was remarkably calm as he spoke at a press conference today.

The German has been under pressure following some poor results, but today he told AS that he is feeling better after back-to-back wins against Recreativo Huelva and BATE Borisov.

"The best medicine in football is winning," he mused.

"Against Recre and BATE we did not play brilliantly but we got the victories. We recovered our defensive security and brought the lines closer together. We are returning to where we were before."

Certainly Schuster will have been relieved with the wins, which seem to have at least delayed any possible dismissal for the German until a later date.

Amidst the chaos though there has also been a rumour that Ramón Calderón has offered the players a bonus if they win seven matches in a row, something the coach doesn't believe will motivate them.

"I don't think that bonuses will win matches," he declared.

If money doesn't, then Schuster had better know what does, as his Real Madrid team face off against Getafe this weekend in La Liga.

The match, where a win could see Los Blancos close the gap on Barcelona at the top of the table, has already been added to by Getafe coach Victor Muñoz, who accused Madrid of playing 'ugly' football.

Schuster responded to this today in a relaxed manner, not wanting to hit out at his old friend.

"Today anyone can say anything about anyone, whether they be low, high, good-looking or ugly," he said.

"Anyone has access to a microphone and they can say their opinion, mine is different to everyone's though, as I am the coach."

Neighbours Getafe will not be an easy match for Madrid this weekend and Schuster confirmed as much towards the end of the conference.

"It will be nice to step out onto the pitch of the Coliséum, but we need to win...Whether it is Getafe or not," he assured.

"They played a great game against Barça and like to play against teams who play expansive football. Against Osasuna and Sevilla they played differently and did not do so well. Our style suits them more and they will be very motivated."

Signings? Betis Have Already Bought! - Lopera

Real Betis have finally kicked into life after a slow start to the season and hence it is no surprise that owner, Manuel Ruiz de Lopera, is pleased with how things are going.

Speaking to AS today the 64-year old says that now the side is winning, everyone is a lot happier.

"Now everyone is happy in Andalucia," he said.

"It is all looking good and the team are starting to win games. When everyone is fit then everything comes together - the signings, the results, everyone is happy, and that is shown on the faces of the players. It is excellent..."

There is no doubt that summer signings have been the key to the success for Betis this season, with Achille Emana looking a particularly good buy now he is in form.

Despite hints from coach Paco Chaparro that they would be opening their wallet again in January though, Lopera remained a little more coy on the subject.

"The coach and I speak of many things each day and he knows that we have already spent a great deal of money to get players like Emana, Sergio García, Mehmet Aurelio, Juanma and Nelson," he declared.

Racing Coach Muñiz Hails Winning Spirit After Comeback

Racing Santander looked for all the world like they were going to be overrun by PSG tonight after going down 2-0 early on, but somehow the Spanish side fought back to draw the game.

After losing to FC Twente and drawing with Schalke they still have a chance of qualifying with this result and coach Juan Ramón López Muñiz praised his side after the game.

"We are feeling great," he told Eurosport after the match.

"It would be unjust not to value the work of the players, which was excellent, the playing of the ball, the professionalism and the winning spirit. We were losing 2-0 but the ones that were playing were us."

Certainly it was a remarkable come back from Racing after going behind so early and they could have even nicked it at the death with a late chance from a free-kick. Muñiz did acknowledge that his side could have won but also seemed more than content with the result they had.

"We must think about the great game we just played, the winning spirit that carried us when we were 2-0 down," he declared.

"We have made errors and that is costly against a team with the quality of PSG. They took advantage of them but we reacted, we worked to try and win the game.

"We have to try to extend our good run of form. We deserved the three points, in the last moment we had a chance to win it 2-3, but we have still left with a good result. Even when we were losing 2-0 I was satisfied because we were playing well."

The coach was, unsurprisingly, in a very talkative mood after the match and he went on to say that he felt the second goal that PSG scored should not have counted.

"The player that scored the goal was offside," he mused.

"It is a matter of interpretation. I believe that he took advantage of the rules but the referee did not interpret it like that."

Lotina: We Could Have Beaten Feyenoord By More

Deportivo La Coruna were utterly dominant against a dreadfully poor Feyenoord side at the Riazor tonight, and the 3-0 victory could have been more emphatic had they taken their chances in the later stages.

Lotina was satisfied with the win, but admitted he had hoped for more goals to improve their goal difference in the race to qualify.

He said, "At 3-0 the match was over as a contest. We could have scored more but I cannot complain. However if you look at the goal average, it owuld have been important to get a couple more goals."

The victory was crucial after their haevy defeat to CSKA Moscow last month, or else they may have been eliminated.

He continued, " We had to win after the defeat in Moscow, and we have done it by playing well. Hopefully we can win in Poland against Lecha Poznan to ensure we get through."

Elsewhere CSKA confirmed top spot in the group by winning 2-1 in Moscow against Deportivo's next opponents, and they have nine points out of nine, racking up eight goals in the process.

UEFA Cup Preview: Deportivo La Coruña - Feyenoord

Despite being two of the more prominent names in this stage of Europe’s second tier competition, both find themselves languishing at the bottom of group H without a win between them so far. Indeed, both were handed damaging defeats by group leaders CSKA Moscow, and the free-flowing Russians have virtually sealed their passage through by firstly destroying the Spaniards 3-0 last month, before Brazilian record signing Vagner Love tormented Feyenoords’ defence before helping him himself to a double in a 3-1 win.

The latter’s defeat is testimony to the nightmare the Rotterdam club have faced this season. Coach Gertjan Verbeek has watched in agony as his ailing squad have tumbled from league runners up in 2006 to Eridivisie also-rans. To be blunt, their performances are not of a level representative of such an established name in European football.

Remember thanks to the likes of Pierre Van Hooijdonk and Jon Dahl Tomasson, De club van het holk triumphed in this very competition in 2002, but since then the club have added just a solitary Dutch cup to the trophy cabinet, and serious financial constraints have led to any top talent being sold on to make ends meet. Dirk Kuyt and Salamon Kalou are two notable departures in the past few years.

The dire situation has given Verbeek a hugely difficult task, and he has had to call on a number of veteran players in an effort to bolster his squad. Former Deportivo hero Roy Makaay is the clubs top scorer, but at 33 years old is hardly one for the future. Combine this with Van Bronckhorst (33), Michael Mols (37), and the returning Jon Dahl Tomasson (32), and it reveals the backbone of an ageing outfit. Domestically, they are in trouble; just six points above the relegation play-offs and they find themselves in a class down from the likes of Ajax and PSV. In the clubs’ centenary season, it is difficult to escape the air of underachievement that encircles the Feijenoord Stadion.

Deportivo can relate to the problems of their opponents to a certain degree. Once they were such a big-spending powerhouse they were tagged SuperDepor, but the club has been unable to recapture the type of form that witnessed its galaxy of stars win the Primera Division in 2000. They simply do not have the resources to chase La Liga glory, but Miguel Angel Lotina has received many plaudits for the way his side have performed this season.

The likes of Lafita and Jose Guardado have given standout displays as the Galacians have leapt to seventh in the league table after an impressive run of five wins in their last six games in all competitions. Lotina’s men are exceeding expectations, and as the excellent performance against Athletic Bilbao showed, they are capable of playing attractive football in the process.

This is likely to be an end-to-end encounter as both sides must go for the win to maintain their chances of progressing. Despite three teams from each section making it through, Feyenoord have already played twice in the group, losing convincingly in Nancy along with their home loss to CSKA. Deportivo could effectively end Verbeeks’ men European run for the season by snatching the points on Thursday.

However, Feyenoord are on something of a mini revival in the league, picking up seven points from their last three matches. Plus, football is unique in the scenarios it pits players and teams against on a regular basis. Wouldn’t it just be typical of striker Roy Makaay to pop up and find the net in front of the Riazor faithful who used to adore him?
He scored 79 goals in 133 games during his time there, and the beautiful game often throws up this type of situation where former suitors become current enemies. Whatever the outcome, it should make for an absorbing contest.

16 Nov Atlético-Deportivo 4-1 (La Liga)
12 Nov Copa Deportivo-Elche 2-0 (Copa Del Rey)
09 Nov Liga Deportivo-Espanyol 1-0 (La Liga)

TEAM NEWS

Deportivo La Coruña:

Bodipo was stretchered off after winning a penalty against Bilbao on Saturday and the knee injury he suffered will keep him out until the new year. Julian De Guzman will not face his brother after suffering a muscle strain in training. Riki will be given until the last minute to shake off a knock and take his place in the squad.

Team that faced Bilbao on Sunday:
Aranzubia; Rodriguez, Ze Castro, Kasmirski, Pablo; Juan Rodriguez, Tomas, Bodipo Verdu, Guardardo, Lafita.

Feyenoord:

Verbeek has a number of injury concerns, with both Denny Landzaat and Michael Mols picking up hamtsring strains during the week that will see them sidelined for a month. Ironically, Jonathan De Guzman has also sustained a knock, meaning both him and his brother will miss the contest. Also missing are Tomasson, Vlaar, Serginho Greene and Biseswar which could push Feyenoords sqaud to its absolute limit.

Team that faced Den Haag on Sunday:
Timmer; de Cler, Derijck, Bahia, Tiendalli, Van Bronckhorst, El Ahmadi, Fer, Wijnaldum, Bruins, Makaay

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Deportivo La Coruña:

Lafita has been in excellent form for Depor, and the cultured midfielder has chipped in with four invaluable goals to assist his misfiring teammates, which is one third of the total goals managed by the entire squad. The 24-year old Spaniard will again be key tonight if they are to break down the Dutch rearguard.

Feyenoord:

It has to be Roy Makaay. Is the former Deportivo and Bayern Munich man simply destined to score against the club he served so well? While 33 and with laboured movement these days, he still has that blistering strike that can be unleashed from any angle and leave a goalkeeper embarrassed. His team could really do with a moment of magic from him tonight.

PREDICTION

Deportivo are strong opponents at the Riazor, as Real Madrid have already discovered this season. Combine that with Feyenoord’s poor form on the road and surely the Spanish side can claim all three points to put their UEFA cup campaign back on track.

Aguirre: Atlético Deserve To Be In Last 16

It's been a long time coming but Atlético Madrid look as though they are going to make their time in the Champions League count this season.

The Spanish side assured their qualification into the last16 with a 2-1 win over PSV this evening and speaking afterwards, coach Javier Aguirre believes this is where they belong.

"After so many years out of Europe it was important to do well and to get off to a good start," he told Marca.

"The club took a step forward today. We are one of the 16 best teams in Europe and we deserve to be here. We are one of the bigger clubs and, year after year, we much reach this stage."

At one stage however, it didn't look as though Atlético would even make the Champions League proper after a 1-0 loss to Schalke in qualifying back in August. Aguirre says that now they are here though, everything is good.

"I spoke with the directors before the Schalke game and we knew it was key to get into the group stage. It was key to make it there and then to qualify," he mused.

"After now, everything that happens will be good. I am very happy and proud of the team. The people can be proud of what their team are doing in Europe and I hope it will last."

Atlético were playing in front of an empty stadium tonight after their UEFA sanction and Aguirre heaped praise on those fans who shouted to the players from outside the ground.

"It makes me feel great emotionally, because to go out in the streets, to be cold, to not even see the game but still encourage the players from outside, that is special for Atlético. The players knew it, they were aware, and it helped them be victorious," he declared.

"The main actors are the players, but the fans...They form the spectacle, they make it, the colour, the surroundings, the framework. The public are indispensable to the game."

Sevilla Squad In Good Shape For Barcelona Test

It has been an impressive start to the season for Sevilla, but as Christmas approaches so too do the real tests for the Andalucian side.

Manolo Jiménez's team played Valencia last weekend and must face Barcelona this Saturday, before then meeting Real Madrid and Villarrealin consecutive weeks.

The good news though is that they are regaining key players at this key moment, with the latest bulletin being that Luis Fabiano, Sebastián Squillaci and Julien Escudé will all be fit for the clash with the Blaugrana.

The most important player of that trio will undoubtedly be Fabiano, who didn't complete training yesterday but is now ready to play at full fitness.

Along with these three there is a chance Konko could play after he trained with the group, although he is still lacking match practice.

Javier Chevantón and Lautaro Acosta both took part in the first training session but only the latter looks like he could recover enough to play against Barça.

Laporta: Win Tonight, Then Focus On The League

Barcelona might be the form side in La Liga but their president, Joan Laporta, knows that they have a tricky calendar coming up as Christmas approaches.

The Catalan side face Sevilla, Valencia, Real Madrid and Villarreal in their next four league matches, hence it is no surprise Laporta wants their Champions League group wrapped up as soon as possible.

"The game today is very important so that we finish top of the group and do not have to face any last day drama," he told AS.

"We will be able to focus on the league, where we have a difficult fixture list and we will need to concentrate."

Barcelona face Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League tonight and with the Catalan side in great form at the moment they will be confident of getting all three points.

A victory would see them finish top of the group ahead of Sporting potentially and Laporta wrote off any dependence the side have on Lionel Messi.

"The squad is big and has a lot of quality, we are prepared to win with, or without, Messi," declared the president.

Lopera Is The Man To Make Betis Big - Joaquín

Joaquín might have left Real Betis but it is clear from his interviews and quotes that no-one could ever take the Verdiblanco out of the now Valencia player.

The winger will face up against his former side this weekend and speaking to Marca he has nothing but praise for the Andalucian club.

"The ones who have been there are a while are playing really well and the ones that have come in are very good players," he declared.

"When I speak with Juanito, Arzu or Melli they all speak very highly of [Achille] Emaná. They say he is a player with a lot of quality and a lot of power.

"If they continue like they are they have to be up there, they have all the qualities to do so."

With rumours circulating that current owner of the club, Manuel Ruiz de Lopera, could sell the club soon, Joaquín told Marca that without him Betis would be worse off.

"Lopera is the one who can make Betis big," he mused.

"I do not believe he will sell because without him Betis are less of a club."

Racing's Oriol Out For A Month

Racing Santander have picked up some good results lately, to move themselves up from the bottom of the table. But today they have been hit with an injury to defender Oriol to dent their morale.

The centre-back is out for a month after injuring his left-leg in training and he joins fellow defender José Moratón and winger Luis Fernández on the injured list.

None of that trio will be fit to play in the UEFA Cup in the week and neither will Juanjo Expósito, who is injured and currently being assessed by the medical team.

Coach Juan Ramón López Muñiz has decided not to select Ze Antonio, Christian and Damián Ismode for the match against PSG either.

Deportivo's Aranzubia Sad To See Bilbao Suffer

Loyalty and love aren't words used much in the modern game of football, but it's fair to say that Daniel Aranzubia feels a little bit of both towards Athletic Bilbao.

The goalkeeper spent fourteen years at the Basque club before moving to Deportivo La Coruña this summer, and after helping his new club to beat his former one at the weekend, he is mixed in his emotions.

"I am more happy than sad but it does aggrieve me to beat Bilbao and, above all, to see them in such a difficult situation," he told Marca.

"What was important for me and the group though was to get the three points and I am very happy we managed to do that."

Aranzubia played a major part in beating Bilbao by keeping out a penalty from Andoni Iraola and also making some key saves from their strikers. He says that the penalty was tough for both players and that he was congratulated by the Bilbao staff afterwards.

"The penalty was difficult because in the same way that I know where he likes to shoot, he knows that I know that, and in the end there is just a multitude of thoughts and I managed to get lucky," he mused.

"I was in the dressing room and I greeted everyone and they all congratulated me afterwards."

Deportivo will hope to go from strength to strength this week as they welcome Feyenoord to the Riazor in the UEFA Cup. Aranzubia says that he is more than aware of the threat posed by the Dutch side, but he thinks his team should be able to beat them if they play like they did on Sunday.

"On Thursday we expect to repeat the way we played at the weekend and I think that if we do that we will not have any problems," declared the 'keeper.

"Victory will be important because it would leave Feyenoord without many options of going through."

Young Spanish Footballer Dies On The Pitch

Tragedy struck Spanish football again at the weekend as 22-year-old footballer, Francisco Javier Herrezuela Arroyo 'Guti', died on the pitch whilst playing for his team, Olímpica Valverdeña.

According to 20minutos.es, the defender collapsed on the field while the ball was out of play, and despite the best efforts of the local doctor, who tried to resuscitate him, he died just before reaching Juan Ramón Jiménez hospital in Huelva.

With Antonio Puerta (pictured) dying whilst playing for Sevilla in La Liga just over a year ago this incident again serves as a reminder of the real sorrow that can occur during football matches.

The team were playing in the Primera División Andaluza - Group 1, which is one tier below Tercera, and their game against Arcos was called off following the incident.

Iniesta Back Training For Barcelona

Andres Iniesta is almost certainly the best player in the world not to be nominated for the Ballon d'Or, and indeed many have questioned why the hugely influential Blaugrana midfielder is not on the shortlist for the prize.

He has been simply outstanding since guiding Spain to glory at Euro 2008, and his creative prowess has been sorely missed in midfield alongside his partner-in-crime Xavi.

Club doctors had initially put a six to eight week rehabilitation period on the muscle tear suffered against Basel on November 4, but now just three weeks after the injury the 24-year old has returned to light training.

He had been an ever present under Guardiola until sustaining the knock, so the coach will be delighted to see one of his key figures return to action sooner than expected.

Iniesta's imminent return couldn't come at a better time with Barcelona facing an extremely treacherous run of fixtures in December. They face title challengers Sevilla and Valencia on the way to El Classico fixture against arch rivals Real Madrid on December 14.

That is likely to be the fixture that El Anti Galactico, as Iniesta is known in the Spanish press, will set his sights on to make a return to action.

When Messi Doesn't Play, Barcelona Are Different - Valdés

Barcelona have only gone one weekend without Lionel Messi, but already there is talk that without him, the Catalan side are a different team.

A draw with Getafe didn't help things, and speaking to AS today, Barça 'keeper, Victor Valdés, acknowledged that it is noted when Messi doesn't play.

"When Messi does not play there is no doubt that the team is different," he said.

"Any player has the quality to contribute to the group though and it is better not to think about whether there is any individual dependence or not."

The experienced goalkeeper didn't confirm that they missed him for the Getafe match, but rather praised Barca's opponents on the night.

"We played against a well-organised team who took advantage of any mistakes with good counter-attacks," he mused.

"We didn't achieve our objective of winning and adding three points, but we should continue."

The draw means that Barcelona are three points clear of arch-rivals Real Madrid at the top of the table, but Valdés brushed aside rumours of Los Blancos being in turmoil.

"A team who are second in the league and are just three points from top are not in crisis," he stressed.

Barcelona Weaker Without Messi - De Mul

Sevilla have enjoyed a good start to the season so far, but now they prepare for a tricky month as they face Barcelona, Real Madrid and Villarreal in the league.

The Andalucian side drew with Valencia at the weekend in their first real test of the season, and with the visit of Barça fast approaching, midfielder Tom De Mul has analysed his team's chances.

"To play against Barcelona would be good because, at this time, they are the best team in Spain, and probably the best side in Europe," he told Marca.

The midfielder then went on to confirm that he felt without Lionel Messi, the Blaugrana would be weaker for their trip to the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán.

"He is a very important player because, with just one move, he can decide a game and he has a lot of quality. They will be weaker without him," he mused.

De Mul is yet to establish himself at Sevilla but with Jesus Navas a doubt for the game against Barça he could well come into the team from the start. The Belgian international remained coy about his chances today, though.

"If Jesus cannot play then the coach could play me, although he does have more options, but I hope to play," he declared.

"For a footballer it is hard to not play. I am young and I want to play more to improve, and for that I need minutes [on the pitch]. I have not decided to go but if a good club comes then it could be better for me and also for Sevilla."

Guardiola: Messi Is Vital, But We Dominated Getafe

The young boss watched his side claw back from a goal down to preserve their unbeaten home record, albeit at the cost of their winning run of nine consecutive Liga games.

Still, he was in fine mood after the match, telling Marca, "I want to thank all the people who came to the stadium today and who applauded us at the end.

"The fans can't be fooled, and on days that we are not applauded, we've played badly. If they clapped today it's because they saw their team working hard and what they were working for."

He continued, "Maybe we rushed a bit in the final quarter and we lacked the finesse that would have given us that final pass or ball, but the team dominated the game, especially the second half."

What A Messi

The absence of Lionel Messi from the pitch was in the eyes of many a major factor in this match, the Argentine watching from the stands when he may have made a difference on the field of play.

"He's a vital player - a special one who is very good - but I do have others," said Guardiola, before changing the subject.

Bojan Krkic was the next matter on the agenda, the youngster not having one of his better games in a blaugrana shirt.

"Bojan didn't play badly," protested the boss.

"He's a centre forward, and to play in the position that he did today (right wing) costs him a bit, but he always makes a contribution and we must continue to press to allow him to show his best.

"Tomorrow I'll pay attention to see whether or not he's down. I don't think he will be, but if he is, what we'll do is help him and encourage him."

Javier Saviola Ready To Help Madrid

The last thing thing Bernd Schuster needs in this time of crisis is to have two first choice strikers injured, but luckily for the German he has talent in reserve at Real Madrid.

Argentine international Javier Saviola might not have been a star since he joined Los Blancos but now, with the club in a time of need, he says he is ready to help.

"With the situation we are in there are possibilities for me to play for the first team," El Conejo told Marca.

"I hope the coach will see it in the same way. I am always willing to play for the team, always ready to help.

"We have a very bad run of injuries, but one must take heed of the situation. In this squad there are other players who can do the job well."

Know Fear

Real Madrid narrowly overcame Recreativo at the weekend by one goal to nil and they now take on BATE Borisov in the Champions League this week, in a game Saviola knows is key.

"We do not fear anything but we are aware of the importance of the game and the fundamental thing is to get a result," he said.

"We will be going after a victory from the first minute, we cannot be indecisive. The team are optimistic, we know that we can obtain the win."

Despite the obvious troubles in the team and at the club at the moment, the Argentine, who has rarely played under Schuster, is remaining positive.

"The first thing we need to do is to get a good run of victories and that will give us confidence and make us stronger. From there we will play our best football," he mused.

"We do not forgot that we are still up at the top of the league - that is positive and important."

Sevilla Coach Jimenez Laments Valencia Draw

Goals aplenty were expected at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Saturday night, but Sevilla and Valencia never looked like they would score a single one.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Manolo Jimenez said, "We were not clever in front of goal. We have players of great quality but they made silly mistakes, probably because of the intensity of the occasion and the strong desire to win.

"We have gained a point but we wanted to gain three, against a team that played on the counter. Still, it is a point well earned against magnificent team that could have won it at any moment through individual brilliance."

The Sevilla coach then offered his final thoughts on the encounter, saying, "Our first twenty minutes were poor, but then we improved. In the end the defence won over the attack."

Jimenez also expressed his sadness at the fact that Jesus Navas will miss next week's blockbuster against Barcelona, describing the wing wizard as a "fundamental and indispensable footballer".

Messi A Doubt For Getafe Clash

Getafe might have in-fighting to contend with before the clash with Barcelona this Sunday, but their opponents have a worry too, the fitness of Lionel Messi.

The Argentine, who has been sublime the last few games for Barça, finished training today with a niggle in his right leg and he is now a serious doubt for the match at the Camp Nou.

After evaluation of the injury any muscular problem has been ruled out but he will still have to wait and see how it evolves before any decision is made.

Messi has started nine matches for Barcelona in La Liga this season, scoring seven goals and grabbing six assists in the process.

Barça will definitely be without Andrés Iniesta who is a long-term injury and is unlikely to return before Christmas.

We Haven't Won Anything Yet - Puyol

Barcelona might have drawn all the plaudits in recent weeks for their stylish and silky play, but today the rough and tumble man of the side, Carles Puyol, was talking about keeping their feet on the ground.

"Everyone speaks about us being good and we are in a positive moment. We must take advantage of that, but also we need to continue the same as we have done up to now. We need to give 100% and play our best, because if we believe we are better we will lose. We haven't won anything yet," he told Marca.

"Now we are winning games, and that is key. It is clear that when things go well and there are good results, the atmosphere is better, but in this side there has never been a bad atmosphere. In the previous phase there was a different style of work that gave good results, but to continue speaking about that makes no sense."

The praise so far might have gone for the Lionel Messi's and the Xavi's of the team, but there is no doubt that Puyol has excelled in defence. The Spaniard has often been played out of position but he has led by example and is the main reason why they have conceded just eight goals in La Liga.

This weekend they take on Getafe, who drew at the Camp Nou last year, and Puyol knows they will not be easy opponents.

"Last season was hard, because we were approaching the end and nobody was expecting it. They are a team who caused us trouble and always create problems," he mused.

"They always come here [Camp Nou] with many desires and that should make us stand to attention, because we will have to play all game."

Del Nido Calls On Sevilla Fans For Support

José María Del Nido is never short of a word or two, and in the build-up to arguably his team's biggest game of the season so far, the Sevilla president was speaking to Radio Sevilla about the need for support from the stands.

"I assure you that our players are different with the fans behind them rather than shouting at them," he declared.

"I ask the fans to cheer for the players. These games will allow us to fight for the high positions in the league. Only with the support of the fans will we pass these mountains."

Del Nido spoke in inspirational tones as he then said that one needs to forget about how the team have been playing, and instead to focus on how they are doing in the league.

"We have to forget how the team have played. Sevilla play as they play. When they play well they win and also when they play badly," he mused.

"We are five points away from the best Barcelona in the league. The first thing we ask is to win, the second thing, to win, and the final thing, to win."

The president also spoke about the upcoming Christmas break and assured that Sevilla would not be signing any new players as they have the reserve team to fill in for injuries.

La Liga Preview: Numancia - Atletico Madrid

Numancia and Atletico Madrid will be hoping to build on impressive victories when they meet at Los Pajaritos on Sunday night.

On A High

There have not been many moments of joy for Numancia this season, but last weekend brought smiles to their faithful as they enjoyed a fantastic 4-3 win at Espanyol. It was only their third win of the season, but more importantly, the occasion marked the first points Numancia have picked up on their travels, a sign that they are coming to terms with the top flight.

Having won La Segunda last season, most experts expected Numancia to be the promoted team that would fare the best in the big time, but the opposite has transpired, with Sporting Gijon and Malaga looking considerably more comfortable. The glaring problem for Los Rojillos is their defence, with their tally of 24 goals conceded being the second highest in La Liga. As a result, they find themselves in 17th place, just one point away from the drop zone.

A glance at Numancia's squad reveals that it is composed solely of Spanish players, with Croatian coach Sergio Kresic being the only foreign influence. While this undoubtedly contributes to team unity, the lack of quality imports is certainly telling. Numancia lack that extra touch of class and creativity that the very best players from other shores can sometimes bring, and this could be their downfall come the end of the campaign.

Consistent Inconsistency

Atletico Madrid are one of the most unpredictable teams ever to exist, but their inconsistency is always guaranteed. This season has been no different, with two draws and four defeats leaving Atleti in sixth position, the sort of frustrating standing with which they are all too familiar.

Having finally reached the Champions League after a lengthy absence last season, many expected Atleti to take the next step and seriously challenge for the title this year. While it is perhaps too early to write them off completely, it is hard to imagine any sane person putting money on them making up the 11 point gap to leaders Barcelona. The added strain of a Champions League campaign is also likely to take it's toll.

The root of Atletico's problems stems from a three week period in which they lost to Sevilla, Barcelona and Real Madrid. They have only suffered one loss apart from those (to Valladolid), indicating that they have enough power to overcome the "lesser" opponents. They will need all their strength to prepare them for what is traditionally a hostile environment for visiting teams.

TEAM NEWS

Numancia

Numancia will be without Sergio Ortega, who was injured in the win at Espanyol. Apart from that, Sergio Kresic has a full squad to pick from.

Probable Starting XI - Juan Pablo - Pavon, Juanma, Boris, Nagore - Quero, Moreno, Barkero, Cisma - Del Pino, Goiria

Atletico Madrid

The only real injury concern for Atleti is Antonio Lopez, who has been suffering from vertigo. Sergio Aguero had to leave Argentina's squad in Scotland to fly back to his girlfriend (Diego Maradona's daughter, coincidentally) who is experiencing "pregnancy problems." He should still take part.

Probable Starting XI - Leo Franco - Perea, Heitinga, Ujfalusi, Pernia - Maxi Rodriguez, Maniche, Raul Garcia, Simao - Forlan, Aguero

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Numancia - Juan Pablo Del Pino has the responsibility of leading the Numancia line, but he has contributed just one goal so far this term. He will have to start finding the back of the net soon if Numancia are to remain in the top flight.

Atletico Madrid - While Sergio Aguero and Diego Forlan grab all the headlines for Atleti, Maxi Rodriguez is the true heart of the team, and all their play is structured through him. When Maxi plays well, Atleti usually win.

PREDICTION

Coming off a convincing victory, playing against a team at the bottom of the table, this is exactly the sort of match Atleti love to throw away. Numancia, however, lack the requisite firepower to take the three points. These factors combined should contribute to a draw that will do no favours to either team.

Mauro Zarate Lands On Madrid's Radar

The list of stellar names being lined up to travel to the Bernabeu in January is ever-increasing. The top targets already inlcude Hernan Crespo and Carlos Tevez, but now a new and intriguing name has been added.

Mauro Zarate has been in blistering form for Lazio and has been the main catalyst in their rise into the top four of Serie A. The former Birmingham player has grabbed seven goals in eleven matches so far, and his general play has led to comments from some quarters that he has the potential to be the 'Messi of the Italian league'.

The twenty-one-year old joined Lazio on loan from Qatar side Al-Saad, who had paid in excess of $20 million to purchase him from Velez Sarsfield just twelve months earlier.

The Argentinean is a prodigious talent who is finally beginning to realise his full potential in Rome, and the Biancocelesti have until 30 April 2009 to raise the funds to make the deal permanent.

However, reports surfacing from Marca.com suggest that Madrid are ready to intercept the move and bring the forward to Spain immediately.

It is no secret that Madrid will be active in the transfer market in January to combat rivals Barcelona's impressive start to the campaign, and Zarate is exactly the type of player to thrill the crowds and get the goals to turn Los Blancos' season around.

Godin Misses Out For Villarreal

Manuel Pellegrini has been faced with an injury concern in some capacity all season, with long-term absentee Nihat Kahveci still crocked with a thigh injury.

Now Uruguayan international Diego Godin has returned from international duty with a thigh strain in his left leg, giving the Chilean coach another selection headache.

Godin picked up the knock in the first half of Uruguay's hard-fought 0-0 draw with France in the Stade de France on Wednesday evening, and was immediately replaced by team-mate Valdez, such was the extent of the injury.

The 22-year-old has been in impressive form for Los Submarinos Amarillos this season, making ten appearances in La Liga and three in the Champions League. His partnership with Gonzalo at the back has been the cornerstone of the club's impressive start to the season, so his absence will be a huge loss.

Pellegrini suffered another blow earlier in the week as prolific forward Joseba Llorente was ruled out for month with a muscle injury of his own, making Guille Franco and Giuseppe Rossi the only two fully fit senior strikers at the club.

Young American Jozy Altidore could see more action as Villarreal may struggle to cope with a tough run of fixtures in December.

Player Ratings: Spain 3-0 Chile

SPAIN

Casillas 6 - May not have faced any clear chances, but he controlled his area well and cut out all the crosses that came his way with confidence.

Sergio Ramos 6.5 - Saw a lot of the ball going forward, but could not produce the opening that the coach would have liked and was withdrawn in the second half.

Capdevila 6 - Was able to push forward when possible, but was not as active as the two that appeared on the other flank.

Puyol 7 - An assured presence at the back who does not always receive the credit he deserves for his strength and organisation of a back four.

Albiol 7 - Another unsung player in arguably the best Spain side ever, but his partnership with the Barça star looked very good.

Fàbregas 7 - Did not see everything he tried come off, but he was also called upon to work back and help out in a crowded midfield.

Senna 6.5 - Put himself about and was lucky not to be booked. In a busy midfield, the Villarreal star broke up the Chile forward movements well.

Xabi Alonso 7.5 - Also worked very hard and kept a calm head in tight situations to break up the play and release team-mates.

Xavi 7.5 - His passes set up two of the goals and while he was evidently one of the players Chile aimed to stop, he still did his job well.

Riera 7 - Was given a chance due to his good form for Liverpool and more than did enough to earn another chance at the highest level.

Villa 7.5 - Showed a cool head from the penalty spot and made the best of playing on his own to create chances and to test the keeper.

Solid Spain Hit Three Past Chile

Spain saw off Chile at El Madrigal thanks to a first-half penalty from David Villa and then two second-half strikes, one from Fernando Torres and one from Santi Cazorla.

Chile will still be fuming with the decision that saw them go behind as Albert Riera appeared to fling himself to the floor to win a penalty. However, they could have no complaints about the second, which was a brilliantly taken goal by Torres, or the third, which took a fortunate deflection on it's way in from the boot of Cazorla.

Despite the scoreline the South American side were not outplayed totally and they matched the Spaniards for a lot of the game, but failed to ever break down their solid defence.

Vicente Del Bosque will be pleased with the performance from his team, who looked confident throughout the match and in the end won comfortably.

Solid Start

With Spain unbeaten in over two years it was no surprise that Del Bosque started with a strong side from the off, with Villa alone upfront and a five man midfield supporting him. The hosts started well in a far from full El Madrigal too, Villa seeing an early rebound go just wide after Claudio Bravo had come out to block his initial effort.

Even in the early stages it was clear that the midfield was going to be the key area, with both sides often having to go backwards to retain possession at times. Nevertheless, the game was been played at a decent pace and Fabián Orellana and Humberto Suazo were looking busy upfront as they closed down the Spanish back line. The former was the first to force Iker Casillas into a dive, but his shot went just wide of the post with the 'keeper at nearly full stretch. Minutes later Suazo pounced on a lose ball and shot at the Real Madrid man and whilst Spain were dominating the game Chile were looking dangerous.

The battle of the midfield was proving to fairly dogged and Marcos Senna was extremely lucky not to see a yellow card as he flew in with challenges on the Chilean players. Indeed, the first player to see the inevitable card was in white, as Cristián Álvarez tripped Xavi in the center of the pitch rather recklessly. Just minutes later and Spain had an opportunity to take the lead as Albert Riera, realising he wasn't going to get the ball, flung himself over Ismael Fuentes in the box, earning a penalty for the home side. Villa duly converted, much to the frustration of the well populated away section, and Spain had the lead with just seven minutes left in the half. Chile tried hard to get back into it before the whistle but they failed to do so and the referee was surrounding at half-time by angry Chileans telling him what they thought of the penalty.

Red Devils

With the interval over came the inevitable changes as Senna, Carles Puyol and Casillas went off to be replaced by Santi Cazorla, Carlos Marchena and Pepe Reina. With no sign of another striker Villa was still working hard upfront, but despite getting an early shot in to test Bravo he couldn't put pressure on the backline. When he did try and tackle he managed to pick himself up a booking and with just ten minutes gone in the half Del Bosque took him off to be surpisingly replaced by Fernando Torres. One Liverpudlian soon became two as Alvaro Arbeloa came on to replace Sergio Ramos and the right back created a create chance as he cut the ball back to Cazorla to smack just wide of the goal.

Spain were looking a lot more threatening with Torres on the pitch and with twenty minutes gone in the half he scored the second goal with a typically great finish. Xavi popped a ball out to him on the right and he dummied to shoot before turning back and bending a shot around the 'keeper with his left foot from about 8 yards out. It was no more than Spain deserved for some enterprising attacking play and they began to play it around with confidence after the goal.

With the lead improved Del Bosque gave a debut to Fernando Llorente with twenty minutes left - the Basque coming on to replace the always consistent Xavi. Llorente showed just what he can offer to the side early on too, as he first headed over from a ball into the box and then chested down nicely for a midfielder to pick up. The game was beginning to get spread a little and Spain were finding more space behind the back of the Chilean defence. Llorente very nearly added a third but he couldn't divert a cross from Cesc Fabregas into the goal from close range.

Even though the game was effectively over as a contest Chile continued to fight hard for the ball and they were unlucky to concede a third late on in the match. Cazorla struck a shot from about 25 yards which seemed to be covered by Bravo but it struck the foot of Carlos Carmona and spun wickedly past the 'keeper. It was a fortunate goal but it was hard to argue with the scoreline, bearing in mind Spain had been by far the more composed side. With just three minutes left after the goal the referee soon called a halt to proceedings and yet another solid performance from the European Champions.

Pellegrini: I Want To Coach Chile One Day

There is no doubt that in terms of money spent and success gained, Villarreal are up there with the best in Spain at the moment. Last season they finished ahead of Barcelona and this time around they are competing just as well in the league, mainly thanks to their coach, Manuel Pellegrini.

The Chilean took over back in 2004 and since then he has turned them into a title challenging side, who have perhaps looked the part this year more than ever. Speaking to Marca, he says that he still wants to achieve more with his team, though.

"We have had a great year and we are all very happy, but our ambition is that in the next game we maintain our level and therefore I continue with the ambition and desire to continue with this side and keep it growing," he mused.

"My work in Spain has pleased me very much. Five years in this football for a South American coach is not easy but, by more than just the individual product, I am very pleased with what the team has achieved."

Pellegrini has been hailed as one of the best coaches in La Liga recently and hence it is little surprise that Villarreal want to renew his contract, something that would make him proud.

"It is true that here we do not have the same budget as some clubs but with ingenuity and work we have closed the gap," he declared.

"For me to remain is a great happiness because I am very comfortable and it will always give me pride."

Whilst the coach says that he would like to stay at Villarreal he also didn't rule out a move and said that one day he wants to oversee the Chilean international team.

"I feel that my career is still in Europe. This is changing and you do not know what can happen in three months but for now my career is here," he opined.

"I have a contract in force but someday I would like to direct the Chilean national team. To take charge of a project for four years and to be able to contribute something of mine to the team."

To Sack Schuster Would Be A Shame - Drenthe

Royston Drenthe might not have been the most influential player at Real Madrid since his move in 2007 but the fact he is lending his support to Bernd Schuster today shows the unity in the team.

Ramón Calderón has called for it over the last few weeks and now with the team in a slump, the players are responding with their messages to the coach.

"Schuster is under a lot of pressure? I have heard that, but it would be a shame to sack him," declared Drenthe to Dutch newspaper, Sport Wereld.

"I respect him a lot because he has taught me how Real Madrid functions. Since the first day he has been behind me and has been supportive. The crisis is difficult for the players but more so for the coach."

Certainly Schuster has come under fire from all sections of the media after a league loss to Valladolid at the weekend. The team desperately need to win a few games in a row but Drenthe says that despite the form, he is enjoying his time at the club.

"Things are going well at Real Madrid," he mused.

"I played well against Juventus in the Champions League and up to now I am enjoying my time here."

UEFA Cup Spot Is Not Our Goal - Damiá

It looked as though it was going to be another tough season for Real Betis following a poor start to the campaign, but in recent weeks their squad seems to be gelling and form has improved.

Los Verdiblancos were without a victory for six games, but finally found some form to win four out of the next five, most recently beating Racing Santander 3-1. Speaking about this to Marca today though, midfielder Damiá doesn't believe their goal is European qualification.

"The UEFA Cup is not the objective that we are aiming at today," he declared.

"If things are done well, maybe that will be the prize and the people are very excited compared to last season."

Indeed, Betis do look a much stronger side than the year previous, when they flirted with relegation at stages. A few key signings over the summer and Damiá thinks that this time around won't be quite as nervy for the fans.

"Unfortunately we have had many days looking down, but now I hope we can look up," he mused.

"I believe that the team are playing very well and it should be a calm year, away from agitation and fighting in the lower positions of the table."

Javi García: We Are All Behind Schuster

It might not be the Galatico era at Real Madrid any more, but according to Javi García they still have players with enough experience to get them out of their crisis.

After been beaten by Valladolid at the weekend, the youngster says that the squad is calm and united, and of full belief that they can overcome this dip.

"In the team there are very experienced players that have gone through situations like this, and they have surpassed them," he said to the official Real Madrid website today.

"We are united, relaxed and the environment is calm. It is a bad run of form that we must pass as it is hard to maintain a high level all year.

"Changing the coach is not necessary, it is not the solution. We are all with him. It is a bad run but we are all clear that we are 100% behind the coach."

The squad might be behind their boss but the media certainly seem to be rounding on him, and there is no doubt he is under pressure right now. García waved off other subjects though, including squad cuts, as just spur of the moment reports.

"It is now when negative things are said, when more is spoken about the team, but there are people who take charge of this in offices," he opined.

Van Der Vaart - Two Wins And It's All Good!

Real Madrid might be being described as in crisis at the moment, but according to midfielder Rafael Van der Vaart all they need to do is win their next two games.

The Dutchman was talking to AS when he lent his support to coach Bernd Schuster and said that if they win twice everything will be perfect.

"The logical thing is that people get angry about losing games but I do not think that the situation is the fault of the coach. If we win our two next games everything will be perfect again," he declared.

The words from Van der Vaart might be described as either brave or foolish, bearing in mind the seemingly underlying problems at the club, but there is no doubt they do need to win. Up next for the defending La Liga champions are Recreativo Huelva this weekend and then they travel to Getafe at the end of the month.

Speaking about his own personal happiness Van der Vaart said that he is sure he made the right decision to join, and being subbed off is part and parcel of being at a large club.

"It is normal that at a club like Madrid one must spend minutes on the bench," he mused.

"I do not ever assume a substitution though and I work to play. I know I did the correct thing this summer when I decided to join this club and play in this league."

Silva Back In Two Or Three Weeks

Valencia might be having a bit of a dip in form at the moment but they have received good news today with the announcement that David Silva should return to training in two or three weeks times.

The Spaniard injured himself early in the season and, speaking to Marca today, he says that whilst he is not rushing things he expects to be back soon.

"I am touching the ball, working with intensity and each day I am getting better," he declared.

"I do not have a time limit but within two or three weeks I expect to be working with the rest of the team. I will take it calmly because I am not going to risk anything after the injury that I have had. What I want is to recover well."

Silva has watched from the sidelines as his team have enjoyed a good start to the season but as of late have slipped up on a few occasions. The winger says that he thinks this might be because of the impressive form they began in.

"Maybe we were doing so well that we wanted to attack and resolve the game too quickly and were hit on the counter. We expect to correct this against Sevilla," he assured.

Certainly Valencia will be tested in the next month or so as they take on the top teams in the league who they are yet to face. Sevilla are the first real test and Silva knows that things are not going to be easy.

"The fixtures that approach are now complicated, in quotation marks, because before we have not won the games against Racing Santander and Sporting Gijón and now we face Sevilla and Villarreal, and we can win. There are no easy games because all this is very equal and in each game many things happen," he opined.

Mixed Messages On Sevilla Injury Front

Torres Proud Of Making Spanish History

David Villa might have got Euro 2008 off to a great start for Spain, but it was Fernando Torres who finished it with a bang as he scored the only goal in the final of the tournament.

Speaking today, the Liverpool player says that it gives him great pride to be a part of Spanish history, and that he realises the importance of the goal.

"The fact that your name will be in Spanish history forever is a source of pride that I would change for nothing. Before I didn't realise it but now I know the significance of the goal," he declared.

Indeed, since scoring that goal Torres has continued to find the net for his club side, and speaking to Eurosport he admitted that he has many dreams he still wants to fulfil.

"I have only earned one important title and that is the European Championships, all the others remain," he opined.

"I have time to make a reality of my dreams, and there are many. I want to win the English league and that, after 19 years without putting it in the showcases of Anfield, would be a way of entering the history of Liverpool."

Mancini Wins Serie A Coach Of The Year Award

Mancio led the Nerazzurri to their third straight Scudetto last season and he has been rewarded for his efforts.

The coach scooped the award for his hard work and dedication at San Siro.

Inter almost threw away the title, but the former Lazio striker ensured it remained in Milan on the final day of the season.

The ex-Inter man has now dedicated his achievement to those still at the club.

"I won this award thanks to the players," Mancini is quoted as saying by Sky Sport Italia.

It's the first time the coach has won the prize. Fiorentina tactician Cesare Prandelli took it last season.

Mancini is now hoping he wins another bench award as Spanish giants Real Madrid are apparently keen on employing him to replace Bernd Schuster.

The German has not been living up to the required standard and his time at the Bernabeu is running out.

The Italian coach is the bookmakers favourite to replace him.

Gabriel Heinze: We Are Trying Everything

It may appear slightly rich for Heinze to make such comments, given that his silly red card did not help his side's cause as Madrid went down 1-0 to a stunning Canobbio goal.

However he insists that the loss was not down to carelessness, and even though they are goin through a difficult spell he believes the players are giving their all.

He said, "We are giving every effort, we take every game seriously, but the only thing we can do is keep working and try to get back to winning ways,"

Behind the Boss

Heinze took the opportunity to offer his support to boss Bernd Schuster, who appears to be on borrowed time after another difficult week.

The unity of the squad behind the German has been called into question, but the former Manchester United defender was quick to give the coach his backing.

He told journalists, "It is a lie that we are not with the coach. Yes, we are with him, and we are eager to move forward. This is a bad streak but there are players here of quality and we must stand up and be united."

Rumours are abound however that Schuster may be relieved of his duties tomorrow, and the likes of Roberto Mancini and Frank Rijkaard have been linked with the most famous manager's post in world football.

Villarreal Defender Eguren Released From Hospital

The Uruguayan, who only just returned to the starting line-up after injuring a hamstring a month ago, was involved in a severe head clash earlier today that left his temple badly wounded.

He was immediately taken to a nearby medical facility but it appears that the move has merely been a precautionary measure, and Eguren has been allowed home with his teammates.

Villarreal were involved in a thrilling 2-2 draw with Malaga today, a match they led on two occasions before defender Rosario grabbed the home side a last-gasp point.

Although they will undoubtedly be disappointed with the result, the news that Eguren has suffered no further complications to his injury is consolation to Pellegrini, as at the time the 27-year old's plight appeared to be extremely worrying.

However, after a number of medical tests confirmed the injury was not as serious as first thought, Eguren should be fit to Valladolid at El Madrigal next weekend.

Villarreal's slip means Barcelona can extend their lead at the top of the Primera division by winning at Recreativo this evening.

Deportivo Boss Lotina: We Were Too Soft

The Rojiblancos were rampant today, comfortably defeating Lotina's side by four goals to one in a distinctly one-sided contest, and the former Espanyol and Real Sociedad coach was not impressed by the way his players conceded defeat so easily.

"We cannot say many positive things today. Atletico won well, they played with intensity and we played like we did not have to win here. Atletico played at a faster rate and we made too many mistakes," he said.

Lotina continue to vent his frustration, "We were a little soft. The aggressiveness of Atletico has got the better of us. They have played with a completely different rhythm and they got goals in key moments of the match."

But Lotina seemed able to pinpoint where things had gone wrong, and hinted that his players would not lie down like that again.

"We are going to fix things. We will talk with the players - there is a difference between aggresive and nasty. They know they have made alot of mistakes, but they have shown an ability to learn from these errors," he concluded.

Next up for Deportivo La Coruna is Athletic Bilbao at the Riazor next weekend.

Goal.com Worldview: World's Biggest Local Derby – Part Two

The Rome derby is one of the top games in the Serie A calendar, and probably the most explosive, passionate and gripping local derby in Italy. Some would even argue that it is the best derby in world football.

In order to find out exactly what the world’s biggest clash is, we asked a global panel of Goal.com editors to sell the greatest local derbies from their country or region. Yesterday we showcased all the top derbies from Europe, today we present those from The Americas, Asia and Africa.

Every derby will begin with the words: 'Team X versus Team Y is the biggest derby in the world because'...

Remember we are talking about teams who share the same city, so Barcelona versus Real Madrid, for example, does not count.

South America

Boca Juniors versus River Plateis the biggest derby in the world because it is not only seen as a football match between Argentina's two most popular clubs, but a clash between teams from two socially diverse backgrounds - the rich (River) and the poor (Boca). It is more than a game, as for the people of Argentina, belonging to Boca or River is a way of life, whether you're rich or poor it doesn't matter. On matchday the entire nation is at a standstill anticipating the outcome of the game. In order to show their loyalty for their team, fans from both sides always generate a truly breathtaking and unique atmosphere in the terraces, whether that be at La Bombonera or El Monumental.

El Superclásico is the most intense derby in the entire world, and the fact that so many legendary players have emerged from both teams increases its credibility. Players always fight until the death, even if at times this means resorting to violence. The day after the derby players from the winning side are treated like national heroes, while those from the losing side have often confessed to be afraid to walk on the street, because of possible abuse from their demanding fans.

Flamengo versus Fluminenseis the biggest derby in the world because when both teams meet Rio de Janeiro is like a carnival. Flu-Fla is without doubt the most important derby in Brazilian football, and a stunning backdrop is the fact that the derby is played at the legendary Maracanã stadium in Rio de Janeiro, where in 1963 both teams clashed in an epic derby that was played in front of a world record attendance of 194,603 fans for a club match. Both teams have illustrious histories, both at a local and national level. Over the years Flamengo, Brazil's most popular club, have had the upper hand over their rivals, with 131 victories compared to Fluminense's 118. But as well as the level of competitiveness, what makes it the best derby in the world is that it is the most important showdown between clubs from arguably the most successful football nation in the world: Brazil.

Nacional versus Peñarolis the biggest derby in the world because it is one of the few derbies that paralyses an entire nation. Combined, both clubs account for almost 90% of fans throughout Uruguay, and the derby has a rich tradition dating back to 1900 when Peñarol beat their rivals 2-0. Since then both teams have won three Intercontinental Cups each but, even if both have struggled for international recognition in recent years, El Clásico is still as passionate as ever. The rivalry between both teams is so great that a few years back players from both teams were sent to prison after a massive-scale brawl. The fact that Peñarol are generally associated with the working-class people, while Nacional tend to be linked with the elite adds an extra-dimension to the game. Each time Nacional and Peñarol clash Uruguay is in chaos, and the position where both teams find themselves in the table is irrelevant, as 70,000 fans are always guaranteed at the legendary Centenario stadium in Montevideo.

Colo Colo versus Universidad de Chileis the biggest derby in the world because not only does it bring together Chile's two most widely supported teams but by far the two most successful ones. Since the first meeting between both sides back in 1935, the derby has gained prominence, to the degree that fans from both teams absolutely hate each other. Chileans are amongst the most passionate supporters in the world, and this enthusiasm multiplies on derby day, when both sets of fans generate an intimidating atmosphere for each other. Whenever Colo Colo and 'La U' enter the field on derby day they are received by confetti, smoke bombs and fireworks by their loyal supporters. Traditionally the rivalry is played with lots of intensity, and unfortunately violence is very common both on and off the field, especially when both teams meet in crucial championship deciders.

North America

The Los Angeles Galaxy versus Chivas USAis the biggest derby in the world because, well, it's the only derby in the top soccer league of the United States, which is a world superpower. This derby also features the world's most famous soccer player, David Beckham, so it must be the best. What other local derby features Posh sitting in the stands? He recently said that the highlight of his 2008 season was the Chivas USA-Galaxy rivalry.

Of course, the truth is that the concept of a derby is foreign to many Americans. The U.S. is so spread out that most MLS teams are hundreds of miles away from each other. Only Chivas USA and the Galaxy share a stadium and a city and have only done so since 2005, which Chivas USA joined the league. Beckham's Galaxy team may have won the local title this year - dubbed the ‘Honda SuperClasico’ by the sponsors - but the Galaxy failed to make the playoffs to compete for the league title. So it's definitely not the world's biggest derby, but it's a start.

Andrea Canales, Goal.com USA

Atlas versus Chivasis the biggest local derby in the world because it is historical, lost in the origins of local pride. It stems from the streets. The city of Guadalajara, Mexico's second most important city, is divided between these two teams. When they face off against each other, little importance is given to the lone Atlas title, won half a century ago, or to the 11 championships claimed by Chivas. All that matters is faithfulness to the club colours. Both teams are famous for fielding local youth products, such as Chivas goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez and Atlas's rising star Jorge Hernandez, who grew up exposed to the bitter rivalry every day. From the their earliest moments, they know what it means to wear the jersey and uphold city pride when they step on the field.

Cesar Garcia, Goal.com USA

Asia

The Tehran Derby between Persepolis and Esteghlalis the biggest derby in the world because it means so much that referees are usually drafted in from other countries to officiate this match, one that brings all of football-crazy Iran to a halt. Traffic in Tehran also stops as over 100,000 men (not women) crowd into the Azadi Stadium to watch the Reds (Persepolis) take on the Blues (Esteghlal). It doesn't matter how badly the season is going, a win in this match can, and has, saved a coaches job. Ony Kolkata rivals this in Asia.

East Bengal versus Mohun Bagan is the biggest derby in the world because it is a clash of two sub-cultures and is an extension of the societal divide that still simmers in most, if not all, parts of Bengal. East Bengal have been traditionally supported by immigrants from Bangladesh whereas Mohun Bagan's supporters are from Bengal itself. The differences between these two cultures are quite stark and although the animosity has been somewhat tempered down the years, the Kolkata derby provides a fissure through which the latent hatred, scepticism and cultural contrasts rush to the surface. A Kolkata derby is always attended by nearly 120,000 supporters and the atmosphere at the Salt Lake Stadium is electric. On derby days the stadium is blazed by fireworks, thousands of painted faces and myriads of banners, several of which can be quite provoking.

Subhankar Mondal, Goal.com India

In China, the game between Shandong Luneng and Shanghai Shenhuais the biggest derby in the world because the atmosphere is incomparably intense. Labelled the ‘Nation Derby’, these two teams are the biggest and richest clubs in our league right now, and in the current season both them are still fighting for the league title. Shandong have 56 pts and Shanghai 55 pts, and there are just four rounds left. Before the match, the fans of both clubs will start to abuse their rivals over the internet. During matchday there will be some banners in the stadium teasing the opposition. Of course, more policemen are needed to protect the visiting teams.

Dapeng Liang, Goal.com China

In Korea, Suwon Samsung and Seoul FC is the biggest derby in the world because both teams represent rival corporations - Samsung and GS. They also compete at the top of the table, so it has to be the biggest match in the K-League. 55,000 people go to watch the game, and it is called the 'Colour derby' because Suwon wears blue and Seoul wear red kits.

Lee Cheol-gyu, Goal.com Korea

The Jakarta Derby (Persija vs Persitara), from Indonesia, is the biggest derby in the world because it is unique in having a friendly rather than a fierce rivalry. Persija is the older, superior club. They have won five national titles during the amateur "Perserikatan" era, and were also crowned 2001 champions after the Indonesian league turned pro in 1994. Northern neighbours Persitara, on the other hand, are the less fortunate little brother. They currently face enormous financial problems. Due to security concerns last July, the derby was forced to be played outside of Jakarta without any spectators. Persija won the match 3-1.

Bima Said, Goal.com Indonesia

Africa

The Soweto Derby in South Africa involving Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs is the biggest derby in the world because football is the sport for the country's black majority, with both the Pirates and the Chiefs being the national toast. This derby may be less than 40 years old but, ever since Kaizer Motaung broke away from the Pirates to found his own club (Chiefs), matches between these clubs have taken on a new life of their own. While the Chiefs are 'The Glamour Boys' and the best supported club in the land, Pirates draw their own support from the rural poor. These games are known to have attracted crowds of 100,000.

The derby has been marred by two major tragedies. In 2001, a stampede at Ellis Park in Johannesburg left 43 fans dead. Ten years earlier 42 supporters lost their lives in similar circumstances. The common enemy for both set of fans is the police - a symbol of repression of the blacks during the dark days of Apartheid. Otherwise, these matchups are played in a very friendly atmosphere, full of song and dance and complete with the most outrageous fan gear - from long, noisy trumpets known as ‘vuvuzelas’ to bogus sunglasses, masks and helmets.

The Cairo derby between Zamalek and Al Ahlyis the biggest derby in the world because such are the mounting emotions on offer that the games are considered too big for Egyptian referees to handle and so European match officials are brought in. The fierce rivalry between the Cairo clubs took root in 1911 when Zamalek were formed to rival their older neighbours. While Ahly are the people's club, the middle class in society identify with Zamalek.

Don't rule out violence during clashes between the Red Devils (Ahly) and the Whites (Zamalek), which attract regular crowds of 100,000 at the Cairo International Stadium. Fights break out in the stands and also on the pitch. During the 100th Cairo derby, for instance, attacker Shikabala was fined and suspended by the Egyptian FA for his violent reactions to taunts.
