Lyon v Barcelona preview

Lyon v Barcelona preview
French champions Lyon welcome Catalan giants Barcelona to Stade Gerland on Tuesday evening for the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie.

Claude Puel's side enter the match in good form after winning their last three Ligue 1 games, form that has seen them open up a six-point gap at the top of the table.

However, they will be without Sidney Govou and Mathieu Bodmer, who are both injured, while Fabio Santos is struggling with a thigh strain. Centre-back John Mensah is likely to fill in.

The right-back position is still a major concern for Puel, with Anthony Reveillere and Francois Clerc still out with long-term knee injuries.

Captain Juninho and France striker Karim Benzema, along with Fabio Grosso, Honorato Ederson and Kader Keita were all rested from the starting line-up in last weekend's 2-0 win at Nancy and should return.

Barcelona team news

Barcelona, in contrast to Lyon, have seen their domestic form tail off somewhat after going two without a win, including losing their 22-game unbeaten Primera Liga run following a 2-1 loss to city rivals Espanyol.

Barca will be without France left-back Eric Abidal, who has been ruled out for at least two months with an adductor injury sustained in last Saturday's loss.

Sylvinho is likely to fill in for Abidal at left-back with Carles Puyol primed to replace Gerard Pique at the heart of Josep Guardiola's defence.

Barca's attack is based on a fearsome trident formed by Thierry Henry, Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi, who have scored 51 goals in the Spanish league and 66 goals in all competitions.

Barcelona will be without Gabriel Milito (knee) and Andres Iniesta (hamstring). Alexander Hleb could be handed a rare start as Seydou Keita could be dropped following his weekend dismissal.

Faubert hoping for chance

Faubert hoping for chance
Real Madrid winger Julien Faubert has admitted that despite enduring a frustrating start to his Bernabeu career he is determined to prove his worth.

The 25-year-old has made just one substitute appearance since his surprising loan move from West Ham on the last day of the January transfer window.

Despite his lack of football the former Bordeaux ace is confident he can make an impact at the club if he is given a chance.

Faubert's loan expires on May 31st and the French international knows that he does not have long if he is to make the most of the opportunity he has been given.

"It is difficult. I don't know why, I have been told nothing. However it goes off better and better during training sessions," he explained.

"The other players start to know the way I am playing, preferring the gaps. I believe I have already improved on technical and physical levels. I have lost two kilograms.

"Anyway I won't give up, even if I don't know what I have to change. I never experienced such a moment in my career.

"I don't have a lot of time, my loan will be over on May 31st. I have to play and prove my value."

Eto'o eager to extend contract

Etoo eager to extend contract
Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o insists he sees 'no reason to leave' the Camp Nou this summer.

Rumour has been rife that the Primera Liga's leading scorer could quit the Catalan club at the end of the current season, with AC Milan a possible destination.

But Eto'o has moved to dampen the speculation, indicating that he wants to stay at Barca beyond 2010, when his current contract expires.

"Of course I want to continue," Eto'o told Canal Catala . "I have learned to love Barcelona over the last few years although I have never hidden the affection I have for (former club) Real Mallorca.

"I'm very happy and see no reason to leave. I'm going to stay to the end of my contract and if the club want me I would like to stay longer."

Eto'o was asked if he would ever consider returning to Barca's arch-rivals Real Madrid.

"If I leave one day it will not be to the Bernabeu," he said. "I could never hurt the Barca fans by doing that."

Barca check on prospect

Barca check on prospect
Barcelona director Aitor Begiristain watched youngster Henrique in action at the weekend.

Barca signed the highly-rated 22-year-old in the summer form Palmeiras.

But they immediately loaned him to Bayer Leverkusen - where he has impressed hugely.

Bayer are hoping to extend his spell by another term, but Barca are yet to make a decision.

Bayer director Rudi Voller admitted Henrique's future is in the balance.

"I think we have a fifty per cent chance of keeping Henrique," Voller told Premiere .

"It's still very much undecided what will happen at this point in time.

"I do expect a decision on his future to happen in four to six weeks."

Malaga admit Eliseu could depart

Malaga admit Eliseu could depart
Malaga have admitted that winger Eliseu could leave the La Liga club if they receive a suitable offer for his services.

The Portuguese flyer has impressed hugely this season and is reported to have attracted interest from Wigan, Celtic and Real Betis.

Former Belenenses ace Eliseu will be out of contract at the end of next season and although Malaga do not want to lose his services, they accept that should their valuation be met they will have little option.

Malaga president Fernando Sanz said: "We are not interested in a sale because we want to build a good project.

"But if any club arrives with this money and Eliseu accepts then it is likely that he will leave the club."

Progress

Eliseu, who was called up by Portugal boss Carlos Queiroz for the recent friendly with Finland, plans to make a decision in the summer over where his future lies.

He added: "I am only thinking about Malaga. We are having a great campaign and want to continue at this level and fight for a place in Europe.

"At the end of the season I will decide about my future. I have heard that some Spanish and foreign clubs are following my progress and that is a compliment to me.

"I was motivated to make the move to Spain and I believe this has been a success. I am enjoying my football more than ever and I want to progress further."

Puel - Barca are world's best

Puel - Barca are worlds best
Lyon manager Claude Puel has piled the praise on UEFA Champions League opponents Barcelona just a day before their Stade de Gerland meeting.

The French champions entertain the Catalan giants on home soil on Tuesday with a place in the quarter-finals of the competition up for grabs.

Puel believes facing Barcelona are the hardest opponents they could have played, despite Josep Guardiola's side dropping points in their last two league outings.

The former Lille and Monaco boss says Barca are a joy to watch, but that his team have a chance of progressing if they play as a team and not individuals.

"It's the most difficult draw we could have faced, given that Barca is the best team in the world at the moment," explained Puel.

Pleasure

"Barca are stronger than us. It's a pleasure to watch them play - they have everything in their team to produce great football.

"They have some great individual players, but they play with a team spirit and a strong mindset. It'll be tough for us but I think we have a chance if we play as a team."

Meanwhile, Sonny Anderson, who joined Lyon from Barcelona, believes the French outfit will have to be at their best and Barca must have an off day if they are to eliminate the favourites.

The Brazilian striker is current coaching the forwards at Lyon after playing 110 times for the Ligue 1 side and 47 games for the Catalan outfit in a glittering career.

Now the 38-year-old is relishing the prospect of the European tie between the teams, but knows that Lyon have it all to do despite Barcelona's weekend reverse.

Best team

"Barca is the best team in Europe and to go through we will have to play better than we are doing in the league and better than we did against Bayern Munich and Fiorentina, because we are up against the best in the world," he told Barca's official website.

"It will not be an easy game, but we will try to make it hard for Barca. Basically Barca need to be really bad and we need to be really good for us to have a chance, especially in the first leg.

"You cannot stop them because their entire squad is top notch, so we need to give it 100 per cent. In fact that should be 200 per cent at home to have a chance in the second leg.

"We need to be really focussed on the home leg where we have done enough with good performances against Bayern and Fiorentina. Now we are up against Barca who like to score lots of goals, they've got amazing players, the best strikers in the world, so we'll have to play out of our skins from start to finish."

Anderson has been very impressed with his former team-mate at Camp Nou, Guardiola, as the playmaking midfielder has made the team play in the same style that he used to.

"Being a player is one thing, being a coach is another. Barca plays the way Pep did; quick, attractive one or two touch football, playing it wide and scoring.

"I think he's doing a great job with some players who have powerful personalities. I am not surprised about how well he's doing and I am really happy for him."

Ramos focused on beating Reds

Ramos focused on beating Reds
Juande Ramos says he is not thinking about his long-term future as Real Madrid coach ahead of the UEFA Champions League tie with Liverpool.

Since replacing Bernd Schuster at the Santiago Bernabeu in December, Ramos has overseen a remarkable upturn in Real's form following 10 wins in 11 games.

His contract lasts until the end of the season and a positive run in the Champions League could boost Ramos' prospects of staying in the job.

However, ahead of Liverpool's visit to the Bernabeu on Wednesday night for the first leg of the last 16 clash, Ramos is not fretting about his situation.

Instead, the former Sevilla coach is eager to help Real reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 2004.

Incentive

"The only thing I'm interested in is getting through the tie because that's the only important thing for Real Madrid," he said.

"It's an attractive tie against a tough team. It's been a few years since Madrid got past this round and this is the only incentive for us.

"My personal situation is not important, I'm only thinking of getting through."

Ramos is also adamant that he does not have to prove his worth again following his disappointing 12-month spell in charge of Tottenham Hotspur.

He added: "I don't have to prove my reputation as a coach, I've been a coach for many years and everybody knows about me.

"I'm proud of our good run because it's been very good for Real Madrid. I don't have anything to say about Tottenham."

Torres out to break hoodoo

Torres out to break hoodoo
Fernando Torres has vowed to break his Santiago Bernabeu hoodoo when Liverpool take on Real Madrid on Wednesday evening.

The former Atletico Madrid striker comes up against his old arch-rivals after being drawn against them in the UEFA Champions League.

Torres only managed one goal in more than a dozen Madrid derbies and never left the Bernabeu on a winning team.

That feat was not for the want of trying and Torres insists he is out to bring joy to Atletico fans by getting one over their rivals Real.

"I have no feelings for Real Madrid," stated Torres. "I played for Atletico so know that if Liverpool beat Real, it will make lots of Atletico fans happy as well.

No celebrations

"I couldn't celebrate if I had scored against Atletico. I would have shown respect for my former club where I spent 12 years, the club that helped me become the person I am today.

"But if I score against Real Madrid, I will celebrate for sure. It would be great for me to get my first goals in Europe this season against Madrid.

"I feel confidence is coming back at the right time and I am sure that goals will follow. I'm looking forward to going back to Madrid, playing in a stadium where I've never won and against a great team. And because we're sure we are going to get through.

"I really don't know why I struggled so many times to score against Real. Maybe I tried too hard because I wanted it so much."

Abidal blow for Barca

Abidal blow for Barca
Barcelona have suffered a blow with the news that Eric Abidal faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Abidal picked up a leg injury during Barcelona's surprise 2-1 defeat to Espanyol on Saturday.

The left-back was forced off after just 22 minutes of the game at Camp Nou and Abidal faces up to two months on the sidelines.

It means Abidal will miss next week's UEFA Champions League clash with former club Lyon as well as a large chunk of the rest of the season.

Huntelaar rubbishes exit rumours

Huntelaar rubbishes exit rumours
Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar insists he never said that he wanted to quit Real Madrid in the summer.

The former Ajax star only moved to the Bernabeu in a Ј15million January deal, but he has been offered limited opportunities with the Primera Liga champions.

Huntelaar's agent, Arnold Oosterveer, was recently quoted as saying that his client was happy in Spain following reports that the 25-year-old had suffered a bust-up with manager Juande Ramos.

And Huntelaar - who scored twice as Real swept aside Real Betis 6-1 on Saturday to close the gap on league leaders Barcelona - has now dismissed the speculation.

"It is not true what has been said," he told Marca . "I do not know where they got it from."

Setback

Real agreed to sign Huntelaar prior to the arrival of Ramos and it has been suggested that the player does not feature in the plans of the former Tottenham boss.

Ahead of their last 16 UEFA Champions League meeting with Liverpool, Real were forced to choose from Huntelaar and Lassana Diarra - two new signings who had already participated in Uefa competition this season - as regulations stated that only one of the duo could participate.

Ramos opted for ex-Portsmouth star Diarra and Huntelaar, who scored twice as Real swept aside Real Betis 6-1 on Saturday, admits the decision was a setback.

"It will not be easy to watch from the outside against Liverpool," he added. "When I was told was the worst moment, but it has happened. It is reality."

However, the 19-time Holland cap is adamant he continues to enjoy a strong relationship with his boss.

"We have a very good relationship. We have had great conversations," he concluded.

Wigan still keen on winger

Wigan still keen on winger
Wigan have again been checking on highly-rated Portuguese winger Eliseu.

The 25-year-old left-sider is currently with Malaga and has been earning rave reviews for the Primera Liga outfit.

The Latics were strongly linked with a move for Eliseu before the transfer window closed, but no deal materialised.

However, they remain interested and are believed to have had scouts posted at Malaga's clash with Valencia at the weekend.

Eliseu joined Malaga in 2007 from Belenenses and has become well known for his lightning pace.

His form has also caught the eye of Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz, who called him into the senior squad for the first time earlier this month.

Now a number of clubs are taking notice of Eliseu, whose current deal has just over 12-months remaining.

Malaga are trying to tie him down to a new four-year deal but as yet nothing has been signed.

Calm

The player himself is remaining calm about his future.

"I am living a dream at the moment and now I am only thinking about Malaga," he said.

"At the end of the season I will talk with the club, but I am calm."

The player's agent Carlos Gonclaves admitted a number of clubs have enquired about Eliseu.

"During the last few months, some clubs have asked me about Eli, but we have no formal offers," he confirmed.

Ziege on coaching quest

Ziege on coaching quest
Christian Ziege has revealed his intention to secure a high-profile managerial role in the near future.

The former Germany international got his first taste of coaching during an ill-fated spell at Borussia Monchengladbach.

Ziege called time on his playing career at the Bundesliga outfit, moving into a director of football role.

He then accepted the call to become the club's assistant manager following the appointment of Hans Meyer in October 2008.

However, he would last just two months in that post before handing in his resignation.

Having enjoyed a distinguished career, which took in spells at Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Liverpool, Middlesbrough and Tottenham, Ziege admits he is now hoping to secure a new job at one of Europe's top clubs.

Challenge

"I know that I definitely want to be a manager and coach a team in the future," he told Kicker .

"Maybe in the Bundesliga or in another big competition like Spain, Italy or England.

"I really think I can stand such a challenge. The ten-day spell I had as interim manager at Borussia was the best period I enjoyed at the club.

"It was the spark which decided where my future will lie."

Ziege is set to complete his Uefa coaching badges over the summer, with the intention of getting back into football as soon as possible.

Chevanton blow for Sevilla
Sevilla striker Javier Chevanton has been ruled out for the rest of the season through injury.

The former Monaco man has been forced to undergo surgery on a knee injury sidelining him for several months.

Chevanton has seen his time at Sevilla blighted by injuries with the player making just 32 appearances in over two-and-a-half seasons in La Liga.

Sevilla doctor Adolfo Munoz admits the club had no choice but to send the player for surgery.

"Cheva has had difficulties with his knee, which we have tried to resolve in various ways," explained Sevilla club doctor Adolfo Munoz.

"It seemed our methods were working, because we were receiving positive results. However, in the final stages of treatment, we weren't able to fulfil our objectives.

"We've been discussing our options, and have come to the decision that the player will be operated on next week."

Milan dismiss Etoo talk
AC Milan have dismissed reports they are interested in signing Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o this summer.

The Rossoneri were linked with the Cameroon international recently, who is reportedly unhappy over a lack of contract talks at Camp Nou.

Eto'o's Barca contract expires at the end of next season and the Catalan giants have yet to decide whether to retain his services or cash in and acquire a replacement.

Calm down

That has led to speculation that Milan may try to tempt the 27-year-old to Serie A, but the club's sporting director Ariedo Braida has rebuffed the talk.

"It is not reality," he told Gazzetta dello Sport when questioned on the club's Eto'o interest. "It is all just press rumours."

Italian football agent Ernesto Bronzetti had something to say on the matter and he reinforced the Milan director's words.

"There is no interest, Milan has other plans and they do not want to sign that player so every can calm down," he said.

Lionel Scaloni Delighted At Real Mallorca Turnaround

It has been a difficult season in many respects for Real Mallorca, with off the field controversy being mirrored by disappointing performances on the pitch.

The collapse of the proposed takeover by English businessman Paul Davidson midway through the campaign put the future of the club in serious doubt, while the players have struggled to get results as they face up to a relegation battle.

But Sunday's narrow 1-0 win over rivals Numancia has given defender Lionel Scaloni real belief that the current squad has enough ability to get them out of trouble.

The full-back told Marca , " The team needed a little more commitment when things did not go well, and there has been a real shift in attitude recently.

"The players have understood the message and it has been an excellent turnaround."

Older Heads

The Argentine continued by saying that it is the responsibility of the more senior and experienced members of the squad to set an example of the level of concentration required to take the club out of their current predicament.

He added, "The older players in the squad have to take things forward on a psychological level, and this is what is happening.

"It is important to have veterans in the side who can be on hand to help other players at crucial times."

Real Mallorca's battling victory has moved them above Numancia in the league table, and they are level on points with Osasuna as the relegation run-in begins to take shape.

Juande Ramos Pleased Real Madrid Triumphed Without Arjen Robben

Real Madrid coach, Juande Ramos, has admitted today that he still believes his side can "reduce the two digit gap down to one" with regards to Barcelona's lead in The Primera Division.

The Catalans dropped their first points of the year against Real Betis at the weekend and Ramos claimed they must wait to "cut the gap little by little" so that Barca "feel the pressure".

He also spoke about the secret behind his side's eighth successive win at the weekend, claiming it is "to work a lot" and "to be short-term", but also "to be patient, to know that there is still a long way to go and to continue this way".

Most significantly Madrid managed to win without Arjen Robben, and Ramos told Marca that he was pleased with the victory.

"For sure Robben is playing at a great level, but the feeling had been created that we had a dependence on him. It has been shown that we have another group of players and the team continued to show their worth," he mused.

Unsurprisingly, the coach also took time to praise Raul, who broke Alfredo Di Stefano's goal scoring record for Madrid at the weekend.

"Raul is the living history of the club. He still has a few years left, and he will have some numbers and records that will be very difficult for anyone to break," he declared.

"At this time, we have to enjoy what we are living with him, we have to perform as well as he is performing."

Ex-Spain PM Aznar: A Joy To Watch Barcelona & Lionel Messi

Former Spanish Prime Minister, Jose Maria Aznar, who has always shown his affection for his hometown club, Real Madrid, did not attempt to hide his admiration for Barcelona this season.

The recently turned 56-year-old also had all-round praise for Lionel Messi and Pep Guardiola.

“Pep knows how to assemble a good team and he’s very intelligent. To watch Barcelona play is a joy. They are playing great football and they are doing very well,” he said in an interview with Cadena COPE .

“The player whom I like most is Lionel Messi,” he added.

Aznar, however, is sceptical about Barca’s chances of claiming the La Liga, Champions League and Copa del Rey treble.

“The season is very long and it is difficult to maintain the same level throughout the campaign. They might have a slump. Still, they are playing well.

“It is very difficult to win all three titles. It is possible, but very difficult,” he cautioned.

Aznar didn’t leave the interview with the radio station without touching on Madrid: “For me, Iker Casillas is the best goalkeeper in the world.

“As far as the club’s elections go, I will not consider running because I do not fulfil the requirement of being a member for at least ten years,” he revealed.

Marcelo Delighted With First Real Madrid Goal

While the centre of attention was on Real Madrid captain Raul and his record-breaking 308th and 309th goals for the club, one of the team’s emerging youngsters, Marcelo, had an equally memorable game in the white shirt.

The Brazilian, who has been receiving his share of stinging criticism every time he plays at the Santiago Bernabeu, put in one of his better performances last night against Sporting Gijon and he even capped off the evening with a fine strike.

“This is my first goal with Real Madrid and I am very pleased. [Gonzalo] Higuain provided a great pass and I managed to beat the goalkeeper. Thank God I scored a great goal,” he said during the post-match interviews.

“I am continuing to work hard and I hope I can build on this. The coach [Juande Ramos] has given me a lot of confidence and I believe I have done well today. I want to play football and I want to help Madrid,” he added.

Despite the crushing 4-0 scoreline, Marcelo assured that it was anything but a straightforward victory.

“It wasn’t easy to win in Gijon, but we achieved the result because we played with the same mentality we showed in the past few games.

“Before the match, we knew that we wanted to win because we were aware we could close the gap [on Barcelona]. Now, the atmosphere in the squad is phenomenal and all the players are thrilled to have completed the objective,” he explained.

The 20-year-old reserved his final words for Raul: “He is an example for all the players. He helps us in everything and in addition, he is a great captain.”

Los Blancos have now cut the deficit to Barcelona to just 10 points after the Blaugrana only managed a 2-2 draw at Real Betis on Saturday.

Kanoute Wins It For Sevilla At Espanyol

The Mali international netted with a brace in the closing minutes to clinch all three points for the visitors in a very even encounter in the Estadi Olimpic in Barcelona.

Espanyol were more than holding their own before Milan Smiljanic was sent of just after the hour mark and from then they faced an uphill struggle to stay on level terms.

Jimenez was under pressure in the build-up to the game after a string of inconsistent performances had sen frustration grow at the Andalucian outfit and forced the coach to speak out.

After stating sarcastically that his side must be bad if only Barcelona and Real Madrid are better, Sevilla proved their coach right by remaining patient to take all three points.

The win cemented the visitors' place in the top four while Espanyol are left rooted to the foot of the table and without a win since early November, despite playing well.

Early on the hosts' intent was clear as Nene's cross was met by Luis Garcia but his flick towards goal was straight at Andres Palop, while Sevilla's first chance did not come until just before the half hour mark.

Before the break Luis Garcia again went twice, but then Jimenez gave his team a pep talk at the break and they began to make Carlos Kameni work for his wages in the Espanyol goal.

After Palop had kept out Luis Garcia yet again, Renato produced some good skill to move into the area, but the keeper was off his line quickly to deflect the ball behind.

Capel shot just wide and Fazio wasted his second chance of the game before Espanyol's evening became that bit more difficult when Smiljanic was dismissed for a foul on Capel.

De la Pena's appearance as a substitute had lifted the crowd, as had the imminent introduction of Raul Tamudo, but even those two could not stop Sevilla who gradually wore down their opponents.

Renato hit the post and Kanoute produced a save from Kameni soon after and when Espanyol did not heed the warning the former West Ham and Tottenham forward made them pay.

Jesus Navas' cross from the right found Kanoute and he slotted past Kameni while the defenders protested that the scorer had pushed his marker before shooting.

That was a blow for Espanyol and their chances of taking anything from the game were over when Kanoute tucked in his second in injury time as Navas again picked him out to tap in at the far post.

Player Ratings: Atletico Madrid 1-1 Getafe

ATLETICO MADRID

Leo Franco 6 - Hardly had anything to do after the first few minutes and there was not much he could have done to prevent the equaliser.

Pernia 5.5 - Did show his ugly side with a few fouls and was exposed on occasion in both halves as Getafe found space for crosses on his side.

Pablo 6.5 - Had a strong game at the back for a team relied on its defence to keep them in front, but he does lose marks for conceding a penalty.

Ujfalusi 6 - Stuck to his task, but until Getafe actually found a way to the edge of the Atleti area did not have a great deal to do.

Seitaridis 6 - Set up the goal with a long ball forward and rarely allowed Getafe to go down his flank.

Raul Garcia 6 - Was unable to put his foot on the ball in the middle and control the play like maybe he should have done.

Assuncao 5 - As one of the creative players in the home side, he did little to actually create anything and went missing for long periods.

Maxi 6.5 - Led by example with some powerful runs, but his finishing was not up to his usual standard when he could have won the game for Atletico.

Simao 7 - Tried everything he could to create chances and his touches were the highlights for the hosts going forward most of the game.

Forlan 7 - Another players that stood out above his team-mates for his running and his ability to open Getafe up with his vision.

Aguero 6 - Showed some good touches when bringing the ball down, but Atletico were unable to use him as they have done before and he had few chances.

Subs

Maniche 6 - Had a shot and looked to make things work going forward, but he could not do that much as the rest of his team struggled.

Heitinga 5.5 - Did not make much of an impression, but was the only defender to go on and was present when Getafe equalised.

Pongolle 7 - His entrance gave Atletico a lift if all too briefly, as his running and determination added some decisiveness to the team.

GETAFE

Jacobo 7 - Made some very good stops to keep his team in the game and could have earned himself a regular place in the side.

Cortes 5.5 - Was taken off early in the second half for the more attack-minded Contra in what had to be a tactical switch as he did little wrong.

Cata Diaz 7.5 - A commanding presence at the back for the visitors and will have been pleased that Getafe only conceded one against such renowned forwards.

Mario 7 - His spirit was undoubted as he challenged for every ball like it was a cup final while riding his luck on one occasion when nudging Maxi.

Licht 5.5 - Did some very odd things at crucial moments like try to shoot from the goal-line and then trying again from inside his own half.

Gavilan 6 - Worked tirelessly before being replaced ten minutes from time as Victor Munoz looked to add more to his forward line.

Casquero 7 - Remained calm and collected and showed that he is capable of tackling as well as making a decisive pass when required.

Polanski 5 - When some midfield inspiration was needed he was unable to produce the goods and a shocking long range pass off the pitch summed things up.

Granero 6 - Showed flashes of what he can do, but they were too few and far between for him to effect the game enough.

Albín 7.5 - Overcame his dreadful penalty kick to be in the right place at the right time to head home the equaliser.

Uche 7 - Often failed to take a good first touch when playing as the main man up front, but his knock down created the goal and that was enough.

Subs

Contra 6.5 - His fine cross to the far post led to the equaliser as coach Victor Munoz made some effective substitutions.

Celestini 6 - Showed some good touches as he helped to shore up Getafe's midfield.

Guerron 7 - Came on and really made his presence felt as he put himself about and spurred Getafe forward.

Lotina Pleased With Deportivo La Coruna's Point Against Osasuna

Miguel Angel Lotina was not disappointed with Deportivo La Coruna's 0-0 draw against Osasuna, preferring instead to draw on the positives.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Lotina said, "I attach a lot of importance to the style of play.

"We would have liked to win, but when we played in Pamplona Osasuna also deserved more than the draw, so it evens out.

"Right now we are playing well and I liked the manner in which we obtained the point, because the fans enjoyed certain moments as well. I am satisfied with the effort and concentration of the team.

"Apart from the first ten or fifteen minutes, we played very well. From then on we began to play and they had virtually no chances, so I am happy."

Finally, Lotina commented on the future of Mexican striker Omar Bravo, saying, "He is a much wanted player in Mexico, but he is a Deportivo player and there is no point in talking about this until June.

"I have explained on other occasions why he does not play, but we are delighted with him."

Osasuna coach Jose Antonio Camacho was pleased with his side's point at Deportivo La Coruna, despite it meaning that they are still without an away win this season.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Camacho said, "It was a very even and difficult match.

"We began very well and then Deportivo improved. The second half was more even, and the draw was a fair result.

"Defensively, we are very aggressive and well organised. [But] we definitely lacked an attacking threat tonight."

Finally, Camacho commented on the Pamplona club's inability to win away from home, saying, "We have to try and capture the same dynamics we have at home, but at least we will breathe easier after this result."

Barcelona may not have been able to continue their winning streak, but Pep Guardiola is not too concerned.

Speaking at the post match press conference, he said, "We came to win and could not, but I am not disappointed because the team played well and created a lot of chances that we could not convert."

"We learn something in every game."

"It was an uphill task today, after going 2-0 down, but the team fought to the end," continued Guardiola. "We drew and had chances to win."

He then continued his cautious approach towards title predictions, saying, "There are still 15 games and a lot of points on offer."

Finally, Guardiola praised his opponents, stating, "They are a good side."

La Liga Preview: Valencia - Malaga

Kick-Off: Saturday, February 14, 2009. 22:00 CET. Mestalla, Valencia

If Valencia are to stop the headlines regarding their precarious financial situation overshadowing their quest for a Champions League berth, they will consider this fixture one that they must win.

Los Che's players have reportedly not been paid recently and, though the messages from the squad are currently upbeat, a few more inconsistent performances could see some cracks beginning to appear.

Rumours that the club will have to sell various star names hark back to the bleak times of last summer, however, while David Villa and David Silva stayed on then, it appears unlikely that both will start the next campaign at Mestalla.

One way that the tension can be eased is if the team start performing on the field and put together a run that cements their place in the top four, ensuring vital European income next season.

The defeat at Osasuna last Sunday did not see the club slip out of the Champions League spots, however, Valencia have won just three times in their ten games since the turn of the year.

Major Achievement

Expectations at Malaga may not be as high but the fact that the club are not struggling to stay up can be seen as something as a major achievement for Antonio Tapia's team.

After winning promotion back to the top flight at the end of last season, the annual predictions were made that the three newcomers would spend all season battling to ensure survival.

There is always one team that does not play by the rules and, though Numancia are doing better than expected and Sporting Gijon are in mid-table, Malaga have out-performed them both.

A dramatic comeback last weekend against Almeria meant that the Andalucian outfit are now in seventh place and are just three points behind Sevilla, who are third.

Salva Ballesta has stated that there should be no talk about qualifying for Europe with 16 matches still to play, but even for him to have to come out and say that is a reminder of just how well Malaga are doing.

PREDICTION

There is no reason why this could not be an upset given the problems behind the scenes at Valencia and the confidence that Malaga will arrive with. Los Che do have a good home record, however, that may not be enough and some defensive lapses could see them slide to a shock loss.

Ronaldo Talks Of Recovery A Year After His Horrific Knee Injury

Brazilian legend and Corinthians striker Ronaldo has spoken of his long and winding road to recovery exactly a year after suffering a horrific knee ligament injury with Milan.

Many will remember Ronaldo going down in tears against Livorno on February 13, 2008. There were fears 'Il Fenomeno's' career was over and he underwent major surgery to reconstruct severed ligaments. The striker suffered from similar injuries to his right knee in 1999 and then a year later.

However, exactly 12 months to the day, Ronaldo is back and almost ready to make his debut for Corinthians. The former Inter, Milan and Real Madrid striker has spoken of his agony and rehabilitation.

"The recovery was not easier or harder than the previous one," Ronaldo told Globoesporte.com.

"I think having been through it before helped me as I already had the experience of having a serious injury. When it happened the first time I didn't really know what to expect on a day-to-day basis.

"I remember the first time [it happened]; I lost a certain degree of flexion in my right knee. However, I never had such a problem this time."

Ronaldo's physiotherapist, Bruno Mazziotta, who helped the striker recover from his first major injury, admits the player did consider retiring at one point.

"I think he thought about retiring in the first month after the injury," stated Mazziotta.

"He said he would retire if he felt pain while recovering because he did not want to come back only half fit."

Ronaldo has been working hard in training and he is expected to make his debut for his Brazilian side soon.

Valencia Players Will Keep Their Focus Despite Wage Troubles - Unai Emery

Unai Emery has stated that his players should be able to forget about the current financial troubles at the club when they take on Malaga this weekend.

The team have been waiting on their wages for several weeks and, even though they do not yet know when they will be given their pay cheques, the coach claimed that there is nothing to be worried about.

"[The situation] should not, and will not, distract us,” he told Marca . “The president is in permanent contact... the club is not seeking short-term options.

"I believe blindly in the responsible attitude and professionalism of my players. If anyone is not up to it, then they can get up to it."

The coach declared that his players will be focused "100 per cent" on the match with Malaga, and believes they have to arrest their disappointing form.

"At home the team has picked up wins, some with more difficulty than others,” he mused. “But we are in a bad run that we have to stop.

"[Malaga] were worried about not scoring goals and now they are getting plenty. The demand against a direct rival is always very high... We have to be more alert and compact in defence."

Certainly Valencia will have to improve from recent showings if they are to beat an in-form Malaga side, and Emery believes the fans need to get behind the team.

"The behaviour of the fans in general has been very good,” he declared. “I understand that they show their disapproval sometimes, but we should all row in the same direction.”

Jonathan Pereira Seeking Villarreal Return In Summer

Jonathan Pereira has admitted that his main desire this summer is to return to Villarreal following his loan spell with Racing Santander.

The striker has played just a few times for his parent club, whilst for Racing he has been a first team regular under Juan Ramon Lopez Muniz.

Nevertheless, he told Marca that he wants to go back to El Madrigal.

"I do not know anything about the chance of returning. It is something that is up to them [the club] ultimately, but they have not said anything about it. Without doubt that is my great desire, as Villarreal is my home and after two years out on loan my wish is to play there," he declared.

Certainly Pereira has impressed at times during his loan spell with Racing, but whether or not he has done enough to dislodge Joseba Llorente or Giuseppe Rossi remains to be seen.

He acknowledged that if he is not able to return to El Submarino Amarillo then he wishes to stay with Racing.

"It is not a bad option, indeed, quite the opposite. If I cannot go back to Villarreal then to stay here for another year would be the best for me. This is something we will talk about at the end of the season," he mused.

"It is difficult to arrive at a team and for things to go so well. I am very comfortable and happy here at Santander and they are showing confidence in me."

Villarreal and Racing meet this weekend in La Primera but unfortunately for Pereira he will not be able to play, due to stipulations in his contract.

"It is sad not to be able to play this game, since I wanted to. I understand though that Villarreal put the clauses and Racing will not pay. It will be very strange to watch from the stands and see both of my teams playing though," he concluded.

Hleb Won't Be Leaving Barcelona

Alexander Hleb came to Barcelona during the summer and big things were expected of the Belarus international, but he has often found himself on the bench under Josep Guardiola's reign as coach.

Despite his trouble settling in since moving from Arsenal, his agent insists that the Belarus international is not thinking of leaving the club, despite being linked with a summer move to Inter.

"Barcelona have no intention of losing a player like that. Barcelona are convinced of his quality and will give him time to prove himself," agent Uli Ferber told calciomercato.it .

"He is happy at Barcelona, he likes everything from the team to the city. Of course he is not pleased that he is not playing much, but he wants to fight for a first team place."

The agent does admit that it won't be easy for Hleb to assert himself, but has faith in his client's abilities.

"We're talking about the best team in the world, with great players in every position. Alexander has great respect for his teammates," revealed Ferber.

Hleb has made just 20 appearances in all competitions this season for Barcelona and has yet to score a goal for the club.

Kakhaber Kaladze: Derby Win Is Vital For Milan’s Scudetto Bid

Milan defender Kakhaber Kaladze insists a win against Scudetto rivals Inter is of the utmost importance if his side are to keep their title hopes alive.

The Derby della Madonnina showdown takes place on Sunday, and anything less than a win for the Rossoneri could see them wave arrivederci to any hopes they still harbour of winning the league championship.

Milan have not won the title since 2004 and they cannot bear to see Inter lift it again. As a result, Kaladze has taken the first steps in firing the team up.

"The most important thing is to win the game on Sunday,” the stopper told Milan Channe l. “We are in a difficult situation but the race will be back on if bag three points.

"Inter are a great team and they are doing really. Milan know how to express themselves better against the bigger teams, though.

"We beat them in the reverse [fixture], but we have lost points in matches we should have won. They will also play to win and so it will be a hard fought game and very interesting."

Carlo Ancelotti's men are currently lagging behind the Nerazzurri by eight points. Their title hopes hinge on the result of Sunday's game, which could see the Scudetto race could be narrowed down to just a two horse race if Milan lose.

Capello Satisfied With Spain Test

Fabio Capello believes that he learnt several lessons from England's encounter with Spain in Sevilla and was pleased to be able to see first-hand what physical level his players are at.

The Three Lions' manager stated after the reverse, which came thanks to goal from David Villa and Fernando Llorente, that his team had no had a reality check and that they could take things away from the match.

Spain's system of play was something that Capello wanted to see his players tested against as they had to chase the ball for long periods and stay organised under the pressure.

"It was not a reality check. For me it was a important game and to know some players for when we have to play against sides with a style that Spain have," Capello told ITV.

"I have learnt a lot. When teams play with one forward and lots of midfielders and we have problems to play the ball."

Despite not being unhappy with the performance, Capello admitted that his team had to do better and cut out the mistakes, with the emphasis being on the errors for the first Spain goal.

"We can do better. I am sorry about theresult, because the first goal was a mistake," he continued.

"We played okay, but it as important to see what level we are at now, not only technically but physically."

Beckham Disappointed After England Defeat; Coy On Milan Link

England midfielder David Beckham was unable to turn the tide during his second-half substitute appearance against Spain in La Furia Roja's 2-0 win over the Three Lions.

Speaking to ITV after the game, the 33-year-old said, "They were always going to bring pressure, and they were always going to keep the ball well. Their players pass well, too.

"They got two good goals - the first one obviously had a great finish and the second one came from a free-kick - and overall maybe they deserve it. But we'll move on."

Record Breaker

Beckham became England's joint second-most capped player along with Bobby Moore after making his 108th appearance, 17 short of Peter Shilton's record but two clear of Sir Bobby Charlton.

He said of the accolade, "No, I didn't imagine this. I've always said I'm honoured to be up there with Sir Bobby Charlton - and Bobby Moore - and I'm very honoured with that.

"But more important is the game, we lost tonight so we were disappointed. But I'm still honoured.

"Why have I lasted this long? I don't know. I always work hard on my game, and what I'm doing, and I've had great managers along the way.

"I'm enjoying my football. As long as I enjoy myself and keep fit I'll keep going. I hope to continue."

Milan Calling?

Talk inevitably turned to Beckham's potential transfer from Los Angeles Galaxy to AC Milan, but the midfielder was not willing to offer too much on this matter.

"We'll have to wait and see," he said.

"I've expressed my feelings about it, but we'll have to wait and see."

Fabio Capello: Heskey Fit & 'No Sympathy' In Beckham Selection

Fabio Capello is relishing the prospect of facing Spain with a fit squad on Wednesday evening, and also thinks that the rejuvenated David Beckham is better suited to Serie A than the less challenging surroundings of the MLS.

Speaking at a press conference in front of the Sky Sports cameras, the urbane Italian also clarified the injury situation in his squad currently, saying, "We have a little problem with Heskey, but I think today he's training and will be fit for tomorrow.

"The other players will be okay."

As for the challenge posed by facing the Euro 2008 winners, Capello was viewing this as a good opportunity to test his side against one of the best teams in the world.

"It will be a very interesting game for me because we play against the European champions," he said, before explaining that the style of the Spaniards would be completely different to England's other recent friendly opponents, Germany.

"The style of the two teams is completely different," he explained.

"The style of Spain is to have long possession of the ball and technically fantastic players."

The Italian also asserted that Spain's midfield was "one of the best midfield's in the world" and that in order to compete successfully against them, his own players would need to apply "pressure" and retain the ball

The coach also explained that it was "not for sympathy" that he made his decision to recall David Beckham to the national colours, though he appeared politely relieved that the iconic midfielder was playing in a European league once more.

"I choose the best players in the best form," Capello stated. "Now he's [Beckham] playing, he's here."

And the Italian went on to say that "it is for David Beckham to choose" whether to move from LA Galaxy to AC Milan, hinting that he feels the MLS is too weak a competition for ‘Becks’ to be playing in.

Capello refused to be drawn on the issue of Guus Hiddink jointly managing Chelsea and Russia, asserting, "Chelsea's problem is not my problem. I prefer to think about one job, not two jobs."

He also refused to be drawn on the issue of potential racist behaviour at the game, which marred the occasion the last time these two sides met in Spain, confidently concluding, "The Spanish people are not racist."

Franck Ribery Would Be A Great Signing For Real Madrid - Lassana Diarra

Lassana Diarra has today declared he would be delighted to see French international team-mate Franck Ribery join him at Real Madrid this summer.

Ribery, who is currently at Bayern Munich, has been linked with a move to Spain for some time now but this week, Franz Beckenbauer, an influential figure at the German club, admitted the Frenchman could leave for Madrid this summer.

Whilst the player has insisted talk of a move is pure speculation, Diarra was still optimistic as he spoke about the transfer to AS today.

"Why not? He would be a great signing for the team," the defensive midfielder declared.

"Franck can play anywhere... Ribery to Madrid? It would be good."

Certainly there is no doubt that, even though they have signed Julien Faubert to play as a winger this season, Real Madrid will be hunting for a new signing next summer.

Ribery is thought to be high on the list of potential transfers, with Karim Benzema another player who could move to the Bernabeu.

Benzema, Diarra and Ribery are all in the France squad to play against Argentina this Wednesday.

Barcelona Are The Best Team I Have Seen Recently - Maradona

Argentina coach Diego Maradona today praised his former club Barcelona, describing them as the best side he has seen lately.

Maradona, who played for Barcelona during his illustrious career, is in Europe preparing for a friendly match against France tomorrow evening, and he praised the club and the coach.

"Barcelona are the best team I have seen in recent times. There are squads behind like Manchester United, Inter, Liverpool or even Real Madrid, and they are good, but Barcelona have shown the are a little bit better than all of them," he told Marca .

"With the little experience that he [Pep Guardiola] has, the work that he has done with that group seems exceptional."

Unsurprisingly, Maradona also had praise for the Argentinian who is also Barcelona's brightest star, Lionel Messi - who has drawn plenty of comparisons to the coach in his short career.

Maradona revealed that even though he could not train properly yesterday due to a slight knock, Messi was "lively, happy and wanting to play" and will do so on the right side.

"He knows what I did, and he wants to surpass that. If he achieves everything with Argentina that he is aiming [for] at Barcelona, we are talking about one of the best players in the world," he mused.

"I was speaking with him last night and he told me that it is an important game because it is his first under me, and that he will give his all so Argentina show the power they have.

"It would be stupid to play him elsewhere, if Messi plays as he does with Barcelona, it is pointless changing position."

La Liga Team Of The Week: Round 22

Sevilla and Valencia both slipped up in La Liga at the weekend but the rest of the top seven teams all managed to win, making the race for third and fourth even tighter.

At the bottom, Osasuna moved out of the relegation zone, while Real Betis pulled themselves further away from trouble with a priceless win in the Sevilla derby.

After another weekend of prevalent offensive football, Goal.com’s Team of the Week is again loaded with attackers.

Formation: 3-4-3

GOALKEEPER

Cristian Alvarez (Espanyol)

With Kameni suspended, Cristian Alvarez was the man who took up the gloves for Espanyol on Sunday and he put in a superb display to grab his side a priceless point at Getafe. The youngster made fine saves to deny Uche, Casquero and Kas. He kept his best for the last seconds of the game, pulling off a brilliant one-handed save to keep out an effort from Albin.

DEFENDERS

Nelson (Real Betis)

The Betis defender faced an ominous task on Saturday evening as he had to deal with tricky Sevilla winger Diego Capel. However, he was one of the best players on the pitch as he shackled the Spanish winger and got forward on many occasions, supplying some good crosses for the front men.

Miguel Flano (Osasuna)

Osasuna might not have been scoring goals this season but they have not let many in either. This is mainly thanks to the likes of Miguel Flano at the back. The defender is quick across the ground and good in the air. He demonstrated this beautifully with the goal that won the match for his side on Sunday against Valencia.

Mariano Pernia (Atletico Madrid)

Rarely has Mariano Pernia played to his potential this season, however, at the weekend he looked like a different player under Abel Resino's rule, defending and attacking with confidence. Dealt well with the threats offered by Recreativo Huelva down the wing and will be pleased with his performance.

MIDFIELDERS

Dani Alves (Barcelona)

It's becoming hard to think up new superlatives for Dani Alves this season as each week he seems to be getting better and better. Against Sporting Gijon he was, yet again, at his marauding best, scoring a goal of the highest quality.

Lassana Diarra (Real Madrid)

Arjen Robben might get the crowd on their feet but the way that Real Madrid are shaping up at the moment, Diarra is becoming a key player. With the onus on defence and not conceding, he is crucial in the middle of the pitch and against Racing Santander he was strong and determined, as always.

Sergio Garcia (Real Betis)

Against Sevilla on Saturday evening, Garcia was quiet for the first 45 minutes out on the wing but, after the break, he changed the match for Real Betis. Switched to a more central role, he ran at the back-line on numerous occasions and, most importantly, got the first goal of the match with an ambitious, albeit miscued, volley.

Jonathan Sesma (Valladolid)

Has undoubtedly been one of the star players for Valladolid this season and, against Athletic Bilbao, Sesma was superb again. Ran up and down the wing all afternoon, winning the penalty for the first goal and grabbing the assist for the second strike.

FORWARDS

Diego Forlan (Atletico Madrid)

Atletico Madrid have been crying out for Diego Forlan to score goals lately and, in Abel Resino's first game in charge, he finally found the net again. The Uruguayan striker was instrumental in the win over Recreativo Huelva as he scored two clinical goals that helped Atletico pick up their first victory of the year.

Samuel Eto'o (Barcelona)

The Cameroonian striker has been the most prolific forward in Spain this year and he grabbed his 20th and 21st league goals against Sporting Gijon at the weekend. Not only did he take his two chances well but he worked hard for the team again.

Giuseppe Rossi (Villarreal)

The Italian hitman declared last week that his team do not depend on him, but against Numancia one could be forgiven for thinking otherwise. Grabbed the first goal to give his side the lead early on and then won the game for them when he latched onto a Joseba Llorente pass in the second-half.

Netherlands Coach Not Pleased With Lack Of Minutes For Van Der Vaart And Huntelaar

Netherlands coach, Bert van Marwijk, told AS today that he is not totally happy with the lack of playing time that Klaas Jan-Huntelaar and Rafael van der Vaart are getting at Real Madrid.

Neither of the players has settled in at the club yet, despite the fact the latter has been there since the summer, and rumours have started suggested Huntelaar could want to leave already.

Marwijk admits that at the moment it is not a great issue, as they are training well, but that in the long term, it could be a problem.

"I am not happy with various players barely playing for their teams," he began.

"I can understand that if Arsenal play six consecutive matches, Robin van Persie could play five and rest one, but with van der Vaart and Huntelaar, the situation is very different.

"Short-term it is not a problem, since they are training at a good level and have six weeks before we play our qualifier against Scotland, and I have confidence in them.

"When the World Cup comes though, it is important to play regularly. The situation cannot continue for a long time, and they know it."

Certainly both Huntelaar and van der Vaart have been on the edge of the Real Madrid team since joining the club, and both face competition to get into the side.

For Huntelaar especially it will be tough to break into the team and he may well have to wait for an injury or lay-off before he can hold down a regular starting spot.

Capello: Spain Are The Best National Team At The Moment

England coach, Fabio Capello, had declared last week that his English side are stronger than their Spanish counterparts, even going as far as to say he believes the Three Lions will prevail against La Roja in Wednesday’s international friendly.

But the Italian tactician has come out to acknowledge the superiority of the current European champions.

“At the moment, Spain are possibly the best national team,” he said in the pre-match conference in Watford prior to his squad flying out to Seville on Tuesday.

“They played very well at Euro 2008 and all their players have a very high technical level.

“For us, the results are always important, but my players must also understand what lies in the future, who we play in the next game and where the team stand now.

“Because of that, I’m interested to see how my players fare against a team who have a very different style of play, a team more similar to the South Americans.

“In November, we overcame Germany but their style is completely different from Spain’s,” he emphasised.

This will be the 22nd officialmeeting between England and Spain, with the Three Lions winning 11 previous encounters to La Seleccion’s eight victories.

Abel Resino Ecstatic With Atletico Madrid Debut

Atletico Madrid were rampant in the first half this afternoon, scoring three times in a comfortable win over a wretched Recreativo side.

Sergio Aguero and Diego Forlan were in superb form as they ran the Recre back line ragged. Aguero opened the scoring with a neat header and then laid on two goals for his Uruguayan strike partner, and on this form the pair are among the most dangerous in European football.

It was a dream début for new manager Abel Resino, who replaced Javier Aguirre as coach on Monday, and the win edges Atletico closer to the Champions League places in the Primera Division table.

The new man in charge told journalists at the after-match press conference, "We knew that Recreativo would play to their strengths and try to contain us, but we played well and we can forget about the bad times."

Three-Goal Margin

Resino, involved in his first post-match press conference as manager of Atletico, appeared most pleased with the three excellent goals his side managed, and believed they could have made the scoreline even more emphatic.

He concluded, "We have had more opportunities to increase our advantage, and we achieved goals that their defence had no answer to.

"We have a similar footballing philosophy as Atletico but I acknowledge that we have a long way to go to reach their standard."

Valencia Did Not Deserve To Lose Against Osasuna - Emery

Valencia spurned a chance to make a return to the top three in the Primera Division table when they were stung 1-0 against Osasuna last night.

It was a bitter defeat to swallow for coach, Unai Emery, who called the result unjust.

“The match was very even in the first half. Perhaps we needed a little bit more depth when he had control of the game,” he analysed at the end of the encounter.

“In the second half, we were more coherent and we were the only side who were creating chances. We had three clear-cut opportunities, but their goal ruined our strategy. It’s an unfair defeat,” he added.

The 37-year-old Basque then quickly turned to look at the positives: “We must learn from this defeat and keep being optimistic.

“The game was lost because of our own flaws but our opponents took advantage of their opportunity and surprised us from a dead-ball situation. We may have lost, but we can hold our heads high,” he stressed.

Los Che have now lost three of their last four league games but still remain fourth in the standings, three points clear of fifth-placed Villarreal.

Javier Aguirre To Become Newcastle United Coach - Report

The stress of the last few months at Newcastle United has seemed to have an adverse and very unfortunate effect on the health of their manager Joe Kinnear, who was admitted to hospital prior to the Magpies' 3-2 victory over West Bromwich Albion on Saturday suffering from high blood-pressure.

Whilst the Dublin-born manager is expected to make a recovery and return to his duties within a matter of days, reports on Tyneside are suggesting that the Newcastle board have a replacement lined up, should Kinnear's poor health prove too much for him to resume work.

Kinnear's career has, of course, been previously disrupted by poor health, being forced to resign from his position as Wimbledon manager in 1999 after suffering a mild heart attack.

He is currently mulling over an offer from Newcastle owner Mike Ashley of a permanent two year contract at St James' Park, but has not yet made a decision.

Now, according to reports in Tyneside local newspaper The Sunday Sun, the Newcastle board have lined up Mexican coach Javier Aguirre as a replacement, should Kinnear decide not to accept the contract, or his health prevent him from doing so.

Aguirre lost his job as Atletico Madrid coach last week, after a winless start to the calendar year. His dismissal has reportedly caused outrage amongst players at the Spanish club, with some, including former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan, threatening a walkout from the club in the summer.

Aguirre enjoyed some success at Atletico, finishing fourth in La Liga last season, and taking the club into the Champions League for the first time in 11 years.

According to the press report, the Magpies also sounded out several other Spanish coaches prior to appointing Kevin Keegan as manager 13 months ago.

Former Newcastle Vice President was, of course, Tony Jimenez, something of a deal-broker in international football circles, anda man with significant Spanish connections.

Whether Aguirre would consider a club in Newcastle's current predicament remains to be seen, but it would seem that steadiness, certainty and consistency are a long way away from Newcastle United at the moment.

Iker Casillas Equals Real Madrid Goalkeeping Record

At just 27 years of age, Iker Casillas already holds the record for appearances for a Real Madrid goalkeeper. His clean sheet against Racing Santander was his 454th outing, thus drawing him level at the top of the list with Madrid legend Paco Buyo.

Casillas has certainly come a long way since making his debut against Athletic Bilbao on September 12, 1999, and he told reporters last night, "I did not know that I was about to break the record, until journalists informed me two months ago."

"It is an honour to equal Paco Buyo, an idol for all goalkeepers, and it will be a pleasure to surpass him. When I made my debut, I did not imagine that I could reach that figure."

For his part, Buyo returned the compliments, saying, "It does not hurt when the best goalkeeper in the world breaks your record.

"Because of his skill and physical qualities, Casillas will play more games than Raul and break all the records of this club. He has a lot of hunger to win and continue improving."

There are now only five players who have played more games for Real Madrid than Casillas: Manolo Sanchis (712), Raul (684), Carlos Santillana (643), Paco Gento (605) and Fernando Hierro (601).

Oliveira's Debut Goal Helps Real Betis Beat Ten Man Sevilla

A late Frederic Kanoute goal was not enough to stop Sevilla from losing a heated derby against their arch-rivals.

Sevilla set out to attack, with Jesus Navas, Diego Capel and Lautaro Acosta all supporting Frederic Kanoute.

The main news for Real Betis, meanwhile, was the return of Ruben Oliveira, who was supported by Sergio Garcia, once his team-mate at Real Zaragoza.

First Half

The atmosphere in the Ramon Sanchez Pizjaun was intense, and the opening minutes on the pitch were no different, with both sides flying into tackles and bombing forward. It only took seven minutes for the first booking of the match, as Mark Gonzalez went lunging in on Mosquera. The frantic nature of the match was emphasized by a collision between Andres Palop and Oliveira, as they both raced out to meet a ball on the edge of the box.

Despite the intent, both sides were struggling with their final ball, as the pressure of the occasion told in the final stages of the pitch. Sevilla thought they had broken the deadlock on 23 minutes, but Romaric's goal was ruled out for offside, after he tapped in a Jesus Navas cross. It was a marginal decision, but the linesman got it just right.

Navas was the brightest player on the pitch, posing a constant threat with his speedy runs on the right. There was rarely anyone on the end of his crosses, however, as both sides failed to manufacture any shots on target. Frederic Kanoute came close with ten seconds left, but he shot over the bar, having worked hard to win it on the edge of the box.

With five minutes to go, Betis had their best chance of the match, when Emana found Oliveira on the edge of the box, but the Brazilian could only volley into the stands from a tight angle. That was the last major chance of the half, as both sides went into the break level.

Second Half

Sevilla were fired up for the second half, and it only took them a minute to create a chance, when Capel headed a Jesus Navas cross just over the bar. Capel then turned provider for Acosta, but his diving header was well saved by Ricardo at his near post.

Sensing the need for a change, Paco Chaparro replaced Mark Gonzalez with Damia. A few minutes later, Sergio Garcia nearly opened the scoring when he shot from just outside the box, but Palop dived to his right and saved at full stretch. Manolo Jimenez then made his first change, bringing Adriano on for Capel.

The home side were dominating, but Betis certainly had their moments. On the hour, Sergio Garcia cut inside the box and set Oliveira up, but the Brazilian uncharacteristically mis-kicked the ball. Jimenez then made a further change, introducing Renato for Acosta.

With twenty minutes left, the match suddenly sprung to life with a truly dramatic turn of events. First, Aldo Duscher was sent off after his picking up his second yellow, following a two-footed challenge. It only took Betis a few seconds to make the advantage count, as Sergio Garcia scored with a superb first time volley, after Vega had launched a long free-kick towards him, more in hope than expectation. It was a bitter blow for Sevilla, who now had to chase the game with only ten men.

Jimenez then threw his dice for the final team, throwing Maresca on for Romaric. Emana had the next chance, however, when his vicious left foot shot from an angle was saved by Palop at his near post. Sergio Garcia, meanwhile, was providing a constant threat from the left flank, as Sevilla struggled to hold possession.

Sevilla were running out of time, and their misery was compounded with seven minutes left, when Ruben Oliveira marked his return to the Betis team with a well taken goal. The impressive Damia played him through, and the Brazilian cooly slotted under Palop to seal the match.

Olivieira was soon withdrawn for Juanma, as much to waste time as to relieve the striker, who had gone down under a fierce challenge. In the first minute of stoppage time, however, Kanoute scored a trademark goal to send shivers through the Betis camp. Fernando Navarra put in an excellent cross from the left, and Kanoute rose to head past Ricardo. Paco Chaparro then sought to waste more valuable time by replacing Nelson with David Odonkor.

Despite Kanoute's late heroics, there was simply no time left for Sevilla to equalize, as Betis claimed a famous derby win, with Manuel Ruiz de Lopera's deadline day purchase of Ricardo Oliveira perhaps proving the difference between the sides. Manolo Jimenez, meanwhile, will be wondering whether he will still be on the bench next weekend.
