Javier Aguirre has come under some criticism lately, from both fans and the media, for resting Sergio Agüero but today he defended his decision with some justification.
Speaking to Marca the Mexican coach says that it has been totally his call and that he believes it will help the Argentine in the long run.
"Kun finishes his work of a month next week that we had planned with Óscar Pitillas...The decision [of his substitute role] has been totally and absolutely mine, it does not contrast with the physical work he does. He can play and I have decided to give him some games and rest him in others" he assured.
"In the Liverpool game I told Nacho Ambriz [assistant coach] that it was his choice, he decided to give him those minutes. The decision is now mine, the same as against Mallorca, Orihuela, Villarreal and Liverpool in Madrid."
Aguirre did confirm though that Agüero would start against Osasuna tomorrow in La Liga and says that whilst he understands the concerns he is trying to do what is best for everyone.
"I understand the unhappiness from the fans, the press, the media and everyone, I understand it perfectly, but I think about the team, the best for the team, and in May the team will be amongst the top three, have had a great Champions League and Copa Del Rey," he declared.
The coach then went on to praise the player and said that in all the time he has been at the club he has only ever had to shout at him in training once.
"I have only had to call him out a single time in training," he mused.
"That was for a personal reason but in two-and-a-half years where we have daily contact that is not small or easy, it is marvelous. I know his parents, his brothers and his family...He is a charming boy."
