Aguero speculation continues

Aguero speculation continues

Sergio Aguero's agent has refused to rule out a move for his client in January.

Aguero has long pledged his loyalty to Atletico Madrid, who bought him from Independiente in 2006.

The 21-year-old Argentina international was strongly linked with a move to England in the summer.

Now rumours of renewed interest from Chelsea, with a view to a January switch, are again emerging.

Chelsea have their transfer ban hanging over them, but they remain confident that at the very least that will be suspended in time for them to make some moves in the January window.

Atletico confirmed they rejected big offers for Aguero in the summer, and the player himself was more than happy to remain.

But Atletico's poor start to the season could now see a re-think at the Vicente Calderon.

"Sergio to Chelsea in January? I don't know, it's a difficult question," Aguero's agent Jose Segui told Calciomercato .

"The only thing I can say is that I actually don't know anything.

"I don't expect any meeting with Atletico Madrid."

Villarreal were held to a draw, Racing Santander were shocked and Real Valladolid secured a slender win in their first-leg matches in the fourth round of the Copa del Rey.

Ernesto Valverde's struggling Villarreal side's miserable season continued as they were held to a 1-1 draw at 10-man third-tier side Puertollano.

Puertollano defender Jorge Juan Pelegrina was shown a straight red card shortly after half-time before Villarreal's French midfielder Robert Pires equalised with 25 minutes remaining.

Top-flight outfit Racing Santander were upset 1-0 at second division Salamanca as Salva Sevilla scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot on 87 minutes.

Real Valladolid defeated visiting Real Mallorca 2-1 as Diego Costa scored the decisive goal with 11 minutes remaining.

With both teams playing in La Liga, this was expected to be a tight contest but Cesar Arzo put Valladolid in front after only three minutes.

Jose Luis Marti equalised from the penalty spot after 27 minutes, however, Diego then won the contest.

Agent - No talks for Fabiano

Agent - No talks for Fabiano

Luis Fabiano's agent insists reports of the Brazil international being offered a new deal with Sevilla are wide of the mark.

Fabiano came close to leaving the Liga outfit in the summer, with AC Milan keen on his services but unable to reach an agreement with the Spanish club.

The talented forward has started the new season in impressive form and has helped Los Rojiblancos challenge near the Primera Division summit, while they have a 100 per cent record in the UEFA Champions League after three successive Group G victories.

There had been suggestions that Sevilla were ready to offer Fabiano improved terms in a bid to keep him at Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan, but his agent, Jose Fuentes, insists no talks have taken place.

Fuentes said: "It is too early to speak about a possible new deal for the player with Sevilla.

"In the last few months we have not had any more contact with the club and I don't think this situation will change before the 2010 World Cup.

"At the moment it may be better to allow the player to concentrate on his football and develop his work with the team."

Mata waits on new deal

Juan Mata's father and agent wants Valencia to up their contract offer, amid claims that Liverpool are ready to make a move for the forward.

The Spain international is in talks with Los Che over a new contract and only last week his father, Juan Mata senior, stated that a deal was close.

But now it appears things have not moved on as expected and Mata could be forced to seek a move if the club do not match his expectations.

"We want Valencia to recognise the kid's true quality, and it's not only a matter of money," Mata snr is quoted by The Sun .

Concentrate

Mata himself admits he is attracted by Liverpool, but is leaving his future in the hands of his father.

"This matter is all down to the club and my agent," he said.

"Rafa Benitez is a big coach but I just want to concentrate on my game without any distractions.

The 21-year-old's current deal runs until 2012.

Atletico rejected big-money bids

Atletico rejected big-money bids

Atletico Madrid have confirmed they rejected big-money bids for Sergio Aguero and Diego Forlan from Chelsea and Real Madrid, respectively, last summer.

Atletico have suffered a poor start to the Liga season and they now concede they were unable to strengthen their squad after shunning the interest in their key players.

Los Colchoneros' delegate general Miguel Angel Gil Marin has revealed Atletico chose to keep their star names and were keen to add to the squad with money raised from offloading fringe players.

With bids totalling €86million (Ј77.7m) for the duo from Chelsea and Real Madrid, Atletico were proud of having seen off the interest to hang on to their key men, but with no other major sales the squad now needs more strengthening.

Two bids

"There were two bids in the summer," Gil Marin told Marca . "Chelsea wanted Aguero and Real Madrid wanted Diego Forlan.

"Chelsea offered €45m plus €5m in bonuses for Aguero and Real Madrid offered €36m for Forlan.

"Madrid's president [Florentino Perez] told us he would not meet Forlan's buy-out clause because he did not want a public confrontation between the club.

"They hoped we would accept their first offer and in a deal that would have included us having the pick of a number of players, one of whom was Alvaro Negredo."

Gil Marin was asked if Atletico do not sell in the winter transfer window, then would they be forced to listen to offers in the summer if they were not in the Champions League again.

"It will not be a must, but it is obvious that there are cycles with teams and with players," he replied.

"If any player wants to look for a new challenge then Atletico would evaluate it.

Problem

"The problem in the summer was that we chose not to sell five players; Aguero, Forlan, Simao, Paulo Assuncao and Tomas Ujfalusi.

"We then told the sporting director that he could buy players that we needed with money raised from the sale of other players, but the market was at a standstill and we could not sell."

Atletico have won just one game in their opening 10 matches of the season, in all competitions, and replaced coach Abel Resino with Quique Sanchez Flores last week.

The new boss may be given some money to spend in January while Atletico will re-evaluate the position of their most valuable players in the summer.

"I don't think it is poor planning. I don't think we are short of players. Our problem has been exaggerated and people are talking about a crisis that does not exist," Gil Marin continued.

"If we have to we'll correct things in the winter transfer market."

Ronaldo out of Milan clash

Real Madrid winger Cristiano Ronaldo will miss the UEFA Champions League game against AC Milan next Tuesday.

The Portugal international will miss the clash with the Rossoneri after a scan revealed his ankle injury will not recover in time for the trip to the San Siro.

The 24-year-old suffered the injury during a European game against Marseille in September and aggravated it playing for Portugal against Hungary in a World Cup qualifier.

Ronaldo, who signed at the Bernabeu for a world record fee of Ј80million from Manchester United during the summer, will also be absent for the Primera Division clash with Getafe at the weekend.

Madrid have been on a poor run of form of late, having won just once in five matches, and suffered an embarrassing 4-0 reverse at the hands of second division outfit Alcorcon in the Copa del Rey on Tuesday.

No deadline for Cazorla

Villarreal remain uncertain as to when they will be able to call upon the services of Santi Cazorla.

The Spain international is currently out of action as he nurses his way back to full fitness following a back injury.

Villarreal, who have endured a difficult start to the 2009/10 campaign, are desperate to have him back in contention as soon as possible.

The 24-year-old winger has spent the past three days at a medical centre in an effort to establish the full extent of his injury, but tests have yet to produce a definitive answer.

"The treatment has had no immediate effect," Dr Luis Banos, who has been working with Cazorla, told Marca .

"We need to leave it for three or four days before we can see any results."

Banos has ruled out the need for surgery, but admits he is unable to put a timeframe on Cazorla's return to action.

"Right now it is impossible to determine a deadline," added the specialist.

"Villarreal have a special medical team and it is they who are ultimately responsible. I am sure Santi Cazorla will recover, but it is not possible to fix a date."

Foreign football tempted Puyol

Foreign football tempted Puyol

Carles Puyol has revealed that he held off talks about a new contract with Barcelona while he decided if he wanted to try his luck in a new challenge abroad.

The Catalan club's captain has confirmed that he has put pen-to-paper on a deal that will keep him at Camp Nou until 2013, but he was tempted by the prospect of playing in England or Italy.

Chelsea, Manchester City, Inter and AC Milan had all been linked with Puyol and he was keen to weigh up how attractive each offer was before he chose his next step.

Instead of moving clubs though, the lure of staying and leading Barcelona to further glory and remaining a one-club man for his entire career tempted him to stay.

"I look forward to being here for many years," he was quoted as saying by Sport .

"It was very clear that this season I would be here and I wanted to enjoy it, I asked for time to think about if I could try something else.

"But it's easy to stay here, especially for the fans. Nobody else could give me what Barcelona does."

Barcelona hit Real Zaragoza for six as Valencia beat Almeria and Real Valladolid shocked Deportivo La Coruna.

Barcelona may have suffered a shock defeat to Rubin Kazan in the UEFA Champions League in midweek but they have been irresistible in the Primera Liga and an awesome performance against Zaragoza carried them back to the top of the table above Real Madrid.

Mali international Seydou Keita was the star of the show with a magnificent hat-trick as Barca triumphed 6-1 at Camp Nou.

Keita's opener came from a header on 25 minutes before Zlatan Ibrahimovic powered home an unstoppable free-kick four minutes later.

Keita rounded off a flowing move to make it 3-0 just before the interval and then turned provider with a left-wing cross for Ibrahimovic early in the second half.

Jorge Lopez pulled a goal back for Zaragoza in the 78th minute before Lionel Messi got in on the act with a delightful chip and Keita completed his treble with another header.

Valencia moved up to fourth with an impressive 3-0 victory away to Almeria.

There were no goals in the first half but David Villa headed Valencia in front after 54 minutes and Almeria goalkeeper Diego Alvez was then sent off a few minutes later.

Valencia were in ruthless mood as they capitalised on their extra man courtesy of further goals from Pablo Hernandez, a cheeky lob from 30 yards, and Juan Mata.

Real Valladolid upset the form book with an emphatic 4-0 success against high-flying Deportivo La Coruna, who had won their four previous matches.

Nauzet Aleman set Valladolid on their way to three points with a goal on 19 minutes and then a second just after the interval.

Diego Costa made it 3-0 with 13 minutes remaining and Haris Medunjanin added late gloss to the scoreline.

Athletic Bilbao's poor run continued with a 2-0 defeat at Getafe and to make matters worse they finished the match with ten men as Carlos Gurpegi and Ustaritz were both sent off.

Roberto Soldardo broke the deadlock for Getafe in the 61st minute and Daniel Parejo slotted home a penalty 11 minutes later.

Racing Santander salvaged a 1-1 draw against Osasuna thanks to a last-gasp equaliser from Manuel Arana, after Walter Pandiani had opened the scoring early in the second half.

The bottom two met at El Madrigal and it was Villarreal who prevailed 2-1 against Malaga to secure their first victory of the campaign.

Nilmar's opener after 27 minutes was cancelled out by Albert Luque on the stroke of half-time but Joan Capdevila netted the winner for Villarreal in the 56th minute.

Lopez aware of United rumours

Villarreal keeper Diego Lopez claims a move to the Premier League is 'very attractive' after he was again linked with Manchester United.

Reports in Spain have repeatedly suggested that Lopez is a target for the Premier League champions as Sir Alex Ferguson weighs up his long-term goalkeeping options.

Edwin van der Sar turns 39 on Thursday and England international Ben Foster is yet to convince he can be the Dutchman's permanent successor.

Lopez is among a string of keepers mooted as possible replacements for Van der Sar and he has impressed since joining Villarreal from Real Madrid in 2007.

He won his first cap for Spain in August and has reportedly been watched twice by scouts from United recently as Villarreal seek to recover from a poor start to the season.

The 27-year-old is rated in the Ј15million category and he is aware of the speculation linking him with a switch to England.

"I'm aware of rumours and the Premier League is very attractive," Lopez is quoted by The Sun .

Guardiola keen on Danny

Guardiola keen on Danny

Barcelona have reportedly begun dialogue with Zenit Saint Petersburg to sign midfielder Danny on loan in the winter transfer window.

According to reports in Portugal, Barcelona coach Josep Guardiola is looking to add some more firepower to his squad, and he has Danny high on his list of targets.

The Portugal international became the most expensive signing in the history of the Russian league when he left Dynamo Moscow for Zenit in the summer of 2008 for a fee of €30million.

He is currently recovering in his native country from a knee injury which will keep him sidelined for the rest of the season in Russia, but he is considering a January loan spell to get regular action ahead of the World Cup in South Africa.

News daily Record indicates that Barcelona have engaged in talks with Zenit through Danny's agent, Jorge Mendes, and that the Spanish club are willing to pay €5million to secure the 26-year-old's services until the end of the season, with a view to a permanent deal.

Ancelotti delighted with Cole

Ancelotti delighted with Cole

Carlo Ancelotti admits he has been surprised by the speed of Joe Cole's return to top form.

The Chelsea boss was forced to bide his time before being able to take a look at the tricky playmaker, with Cole having been sidelined since January.

However, he has made a return to first-team duties over recent weeks and has not looked out of place.

He shone for Chelsea in their 5-0 demolition of Blackburn on Saturday and Ancelotti is hoping reports claiming the England man is close to landing a new deal at Stamford Bridge prove to be correct.

"He was a surprise in that last game," said Ancelotti.

"He played very well and it's difficult to return after eight months to play with such good intensity, good ideas and genius.

"He will play tomorrow (in the Carling Cup against Bolton). For us, it's very important because it's another player with quality who we can put in midfield, and that's good for us.

"He has experience and I'd seen him play a lot of times, and I like his style of play.

"I know that he will speak with the club and I hope that he will 'do' a new contract."

Competitive

Cole will be hoping to help Chelsea take another positive step towards a major cup final on Wednesday, with Ancelotti revealing that he will be taking the competition as seriously as possible.

"It's important because we want to be there in that final," said the Italian.

"It's the first title in the season. We will change the team, but we will still put on the pitch a very competitive team."

Chelsea's pursuit of silverware this season has been severely hampered by a transfer ban imposed by Fifa.

The Blues are hoping to get that ruling overturned, but Ancelotti has refused to comment on speculation linking him with a January approach for Atletico Madrid frontman Sergio Aguero should he be given permission to enter the market.

"At this moment we are not talking about any players because we have to wait for the appeal and await the decision of Fifa," he said.

"It is not important at the moment to talk about new players."

Blues dont interest Real ace

Rafael van der Vaart has dismissed speculation linking him with a move to Chelsea, insisting he is only focused on being a success at Real Madrid.

The Dutch star was told he could leave last summer, but was given a reprieve when compatriots Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder departed instead.

Injury hampered Van der Vaart's ability to shine in the opening months of the season, although he has been pleased with his progress to date after getting over the summer stress.

The former Ajax ace is keen to play as much as he can under coach Manuel Pellegrini and prove that he can become an important member of Real's team.

"I wasn't fit [early in the campaign] and there was a lot going on in my head. I didn't do well in training," he told the club's official website .

Prove a point

"Now I am very happy and I want to prove I can be important for the team and the coach has allowed me to play several minutes in the last few games.

"I have to take advantage of every chance I get to prove I can play here. I know it's hard, but I want to fight for Real Madrid and become important on the team."

Van der Vaart was criticised for some of his displays last term, but he accepts that it is part and parcel of the game and wants to show the cynics they were wrong.

"I think it's normal for journalists to criticise us when we don't play well," he continued. "Nevertheless, I don't believe a bad season proves a player isn't good for it."

Llorente pens new contract

Fernando Llorente has extended his contract with Athletic Bilbao keeping him at the club until June 2013.

The striker's deal did not expire until summer 2011 but the Basque club have seen their eagerness to tie the 24-year-old down rewarded with a 34million euro buy-out clause also written into the contract.

The news could not inspire Bilbao to victory away at Getafe as they fell to a 2-0 defeat on Sunday to make it five games without a win in La Liga.

However Bilbao did record their first win in six games in all competitions when they beat Portuguese side Nacional in the Europa League on Thursday.

Llorente has scored eight goals from 14 games this season, six coming in Europe, and has 49 from a total of 164 during his five years with the club.

Barca seek to retain Marquez

Barcelona are keen to secure defender Rafael Marquez on a new long-term deal after settling Carles Puyol's future.

The Mexico international's contract is due to expire at the end of the Liga season, something Barca want to address.

The 30-year-old has been an integral part of the Camp Nou squad for several years and Pep Guardiola is looking to retain his services.

Lionel Messi and Puyol have committed their futures to the Spanish giants this term and Barca now hope Marquez will follow suit.

"The defender's contract finishes in June 2010 and we're optimistic of resolving this in the near future," explained sporting director Txiki Begiristain.

"After reaching a deal with Carles Puyol our attention now turns to Marquez. That is our priority.

"After some talks we're hoping for an answer, but the difference is not about the length, just the money."

Hat-trick delight

Meanwhile, Mali international Seydou Keita has expressed his delight at netting his first career hat-trick against Real Zaragoza.

Barca bounced back in style from their Rubin Kazan upset in the UEFA Champions League by putting Zaragoza to the sword with Keita in fine form in front of goal.

"Personally I'm very happy for the win and because of my goals," said Keita. "After the European defeat to Rubin it was important we responded with a win against Zaragoza.

"I've never scored a hat-trick before. This is the first time I've scored three in a match, but I'm staying calm. I got my team-mates to sign the match ball. It'll be an important trophy at home.

"My job isn't to score, but to protect our midfield. The coach congratulated me after the match and it's important I continue to work hard to improve."

Atletico ready to take action

Atletico ready to take action

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo admits 'something needs to be done' about the club's poor form.

The Spanish giants have endured a torrid start to the 2009/10 campaign, both at home and abroad.

They find themselves languishing in the bottom half of the Primera Liga standings at present, while a 4-0 defeat to Chelsea on Wednesday all but ended any hopes they had of progressing in the UEFA Champions League.

Coach Abel Resino has been forced to shoulder much of the blame for the continued failings and he could be on borrowed time.

Patience at Vicente Calderon certainly appears to be wearing thin, with Cerezo ready to take action.

He said after the midweek hammering at Stamford Bridge: "Inside 48 hours we have a league game and then a Copa del Rey match. This is what we are looking at...it is very worrying for us. I don't know what the solution is but we have to do something.

Attitude

"We've let in a lot of goals and there is a psychological issue because we had a great first half (against Chelsea) up until they scored their first goal. Afterwards we have not been able to get our performance up to where it needed to be. It's a problem of concentration and attitude."

Former Spain coach Luis Aragones, who guided his country to Euro 2008 glory, has been strongly linked with a return to Atletico should Resino be moved on.

However, Cerezo insists he has not spoken to the experienced coach about the prospect of returning to the capital for a fifth spell.

"Nobody has thought about him because we had hoped that things would improve," he said in AS .

"There is nothing decided but we have to look for a solution. I need to talk with the people at the club and see what can be done. But it's clear that the situation cannot continue like this,"

Laudrup turns down Atletico

Denmark legend Michael Laudrup has revealed that he turned down the chance to take over at Atletico Madrid.

The former Spartak Moscow, Getafe and Bronby manager was offered a short-term contract with the Spanish club following the sacking of Abel Resino on Friday.

With Atletico losing 4-0 to Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League and on a poor run of form in La Liga, Laudrup was lined up to take over at the club until the end of the season, but he turned the opportunity down.

"I am happy that my name is mentioned in connection with a big club like Atletico Madrid," he told Politiken .

"But I will not be the new coach for the club."

Atletico have only managed a miserly six points from seven league games in the Primera Division so far this term and they face Mallorca on Saturday.

Ronaldo sets return date

Ronaldo sets return date

Cristiano Ronaldo is hoping to return to action with Real Madrid in their crunch clash with AC Milan.

The reigning World Player of the Year has been sidelined since limping out of Portugal's World Cup qualifier against Hungary on 10th October.

An ankle injury picked up during that contest forced him to sit out a 4-2 victory over Real Valladolid in the Primera Liga and Wednesday's 3-2 defeat to Milan in the UEFA Champions League.

He is, however, closing in on full fitness and claims he is confident of making the return fixture against the Rossoneri at San Siro on 3rd November.

"The ankle already doesn't hurt me," he told Marca .

"I think I am ready to play."

Relief

Real boss Manuel Pellegrini will welcome the news that his record-breaking summer signing is close to being back in contention.

The Chilean has come in for criticism of late following a domestic setback against Sevilla and the European failing against Milan.

Ronaldo, though, is his most potent attacking weapon, having bagged nine goals in seven appearances this term, and his return will help to galvanise the side.

Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz will also be pleased to see the former Manchester United ace back in action as he prepares for a two-legged World Cup play-off against Bosnia-Herzegovina next month.

Tamudo saga rumbles on

Tamudo saga rumbles on

Raul Tamudo has been left out of Espanyol's squad for a second week running amid talk a move to England could be on the cards.

The talented forward, Espanyol's all-time record appearance holder and goalscorer, has been embroiled in an unseemly contract dispute with the Barcelona-based side.

It has been suggested Wigan's Spanish coach Roberto Martinez is a big fan of his compatriot and is monitoring the situation closely.

And even though club and player looked to have made peace this week, Tamudo has been excluded from the party to face third-placed Sevilla.

Coach Mauricio Pochettino says the player is in no condition to play.

"We have been evaluating all week which players can come in and, in Tamudo's case, he is not in a fine, optimum condition, not one of guarantees, and that is why I have taken this decision," he said.

Pochettino refused to be drawn further on the subject, but admitted his explanation was open to interpretation.

"There is nothing more to say - it is an image that can reflect more than what I can say," he added.

"Each person can come to their own conclusions, everybody has seen what has happened and each one will have their opinion and idea about the situation."

Robinho joined City in a record-breaking deal in 2008 but has struggled for consistency during his time in England.

He has also seen his 2009/10 campaign blighted by injury, restricting him to just a handful of appearances this term.

City, who now boast a squad brimming with attacking talent, have fared admirably in his absence, helping to fuel speculation that they could be willing to discuss a sale.

Mark Hughes has, however, maintained that he has no plans to part with Robinho, insisting the 25-year-old remains an important part of his plans.

That was the message given to Barcelona when they came calling during pre-season and the Catalan giants claim they have made no fresh move since then.

"Robinho is an interesting player who we asked about in the summer," said Barca sporting director Txiki Begiristain.

"But City would not talk about a transfer and since then we have not made any move."

Higuain defends Pellegrini

Higuain defends Pellegrini

Gonzalo Higuain has leapt to the defence of Real Madrid's beleaguered coach Manuel Pellegrini after his credentials were again questioned following defeat to AC Milan on Wednesday.

Having spent around €250 million (Ј226m) over the summer, expectation and pressure is high at the Santiago Bernabeu this term.

Responsibility for turning that potential into silverware lies with Chilean coach Pellegrini, and the jury remains out on his abilities.

Defeats to Sevilla in the Primera Liga and the UEFA Champions League setback against Milan have come on top of uninspiring victories and that has led to doubts that he is capable of handling such a high-profile job.

However, Argentine frontman Higuain has no doubts that the former Villarreal chief has what it takes to be a success at Real and insists Pellegrini has the full support of his star-spangled squad.

Improve

"That's why he was signed," he said.

"He has the right squad with which to be successful.

"We have to improve on maintaining our form throughout games, but we also do other things very well. It's up to us; we are good enough to achieve this.

"We are one point behind the leaders in La Liga and we are group leaders in the Champions League.

"We've managed to win some very important matches away from home. We will try to show people that we are capable of defeating anybody."

Resino axed by Atletico

Resino axed by Atletico

Atletico Madrid have sacked coach Abel Resino after a dismal start to the season in domestic and continental action.

Resino saw his side beaten 4-0 by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night to leave them bottom of Group D and facing early elimination from the UEFA Champions League.

Atletico's league form has been little better and they are currently hovering just above the relegation zone with just six points garnered from their opening seven matches.

Resino insisted he would not quit in the wake of the defeat by Chelsea, but president Enrique Cerezo has now decided to act, despite insisting earlier in the week that they had no plans to make changes at the top.

Resino took over as coach of Atletico in February following the dismissal of Javier Aguirre, with the former Rojiblancos goalkeeper initially being put in charge until the end of last season.

Disgruntled

Resino, who had been in charge of Segunda Division high-flyers Castellon at the time, went on to lead Atletico to a fourth-placed finish last term after winning eight of their final nine games and that earned the 49-year-old an extended stint in the hotseat.

Atletico have not been able to carry that form into this season though, and a 3-0 opening day defeat to Malaga warned of troubled times ahead.

Since then, the nine-times Spanish champions have suffered further heavy losses to Barcelona (5-2) and Osasuna (3-0) in the league, and also incurred the wrath of their increasingly disgruntled fans following disappointing home draws against Racing Santander, Almeria and Apoel Nicosia.

Overall, Resino leaves Atletico in 15th place in the league with six points and the worst goals-against record in the division having conceded 17.

This weekend Atletico play host to Real Mallorca, before facing Marbella in the first leg of their Copa del Rey round of 32 next midweek.

Interest mounts in Canales

Interest mounts in Canales

Reports in Spain claim Barcelona, Sevilla and Real Madrid are keen on Racing Santander starlet Sergio Canales.

The 18-year-old broke into the first-team set-up at Racing last season and is regarded as a hot prospect for the future.

He has figured once again in the Primera Liga this term, with his creative abilities in the middle of the park having already caught the eye across Europe.

Premier League giants Chelsea were reported to have made an approach for his services in 2007, only for Racing to give the Blues short shrift.

Canales is, however, set to be out of contract in the summer and will be free to talk to interested parties from January.

Any move could be complicated by the fact that Deportivo La Coruna hold a 50 per cent stake in his contract, with the men from the Riazor yet to make their intentions known.

The likes of Barca and Real are, however, waiting in the wings to see how the situation unfolds, with the Spanish U18 international likely to cause a mad rush for his signature should he opt to move on at the end of the current campaign.

Pandiani reveals WC ambition

Pandiani reveals WC ambition

Walter Pandiani admits he has not given up hope of gracing the 2010 World Cup with Uruguay.

The Osasuna frontman has not featured for his country since 2004, despite being a regular goalscorer throughout his distinguished career.

He still harbours international ambitions, though, having settled back in Spain following a brief spell at Birmingham three years ago.

The 33-year-old insists he feels happy again at Osasuna, with a recent return to eye-catching form proving that he is still capable of providing a threat at the highest level.

Pandiani accepts that time is not on his side as he aims to impress national coach Oscar Tabarez, but he hopes his exploits in the Primera Liga this term will be enough to bring him back in from the wilderness.

"The media back home have called for me to be called up, so let's see what happens," Pandiani said in Marca .

"It would be something special to be selected again, especially if I can help Uruguay to the World Cup."

Luck

Uruguay are set to face Costa Rica in a two-legged play-off for the right to take their place in South Africa, after finishing fifth in South American qualifying.

Should they successfully negotiate that contest, Pandiani is hoping he will be offered an opportunity to shine on the grandest stage in world football.

"Of course I would love to play at the World Cup," he said.

"But first we have to beat Costa Rica and that will be complicated.

"The main thing is to be successful in those games and if we reach the World Cup we will see if I am lucky enough to be involved.

"I don't want to complicate things, but I would welcome the opportunity should it come along."

Mata in contract talks

Mata in contract talks

Valencia have sought to fend off mounting interest in Juan Mata by opening contract talks with the youngster.

The 21-year-old winger has starred for Los Che this season, significantly raising his profile across Europe.

A number of clubs are believed to be tracking his progress, with a summer move away from Mestalla already touted.

Valencia, though, are determined to retain the services of the Spain international and will offer him fresh terms in an attempt to keep him at the club.

"Negotiations are very advanced now and we expect an offer on the table very soon," Mata's father and agent Juan Manuel told Punto Radio .

"If everything is acceptable for both parties, we will sign."

Capel talks delayed

Sevilla will not be discussing a possible contract extension with Diego Capel until the end of the season.

The Spanish outfit had been in talks with the winger regarding the possibility of a new deal for some time.

However, with stalemate having set in, it has been decided to place the situation on standby until next summer.

Capel's current contract runs until 2011, so Sevilla are in no rush to push fresh terms through.

"We have rarely met over the course of the last few months because the situation has not changed," said Capel's agent Pedro Bravo.

"Now any decision rests with Sevilla."

Matured

Capel, who is believed to be holding out for a long-term agreement, is refusing to let contract talks distract him from his game and insists he is happy to let the situation lie for now.

"I have played over 100 games for the first-team and I am very happy with Sevilla," he said.

"During my time here I have matured and I really enjoy playing for this club.

"I have no problem with the contract talks as I prefer to live day to day."

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has given his backing to under-fire coach Abel Resino.

The Spanish side have won just one of their seven La Liga games so far this season, seeing them slump dangerously close to the foot of the table.

Their UEFA Champions League Group campaign has been equally unsuccessful, with a difficult trip to Chelsea on Wednesday offering no respite.

But Cerezo insist the club are not looking for a replacement for Resino despite Los Colchoneros' woeful start.

"At the moment we haven't thought about changing coaches," he said.

"It's difficult right now, but we'll find the solution as quick as possible."

Hughes holds no Robinho worries

Hughes holds no Robinho worries

Manchester City boss Mark Hughes insists he is not unduly concerned by quotes attributed to Robinho this week that saw the Brazilian state a desire to play for Barcelona.

The injured forward made the headlines in Spain after declaring an interest in moving to Camp Nou in order to play under Pep Guardiola, a known admirer of his talents.

It is not the first time such conjecture has emanated from Robinho's camp but Hughes is refusing to worry about paper talk, which he feels is often taken out of context.

On the contrary, having accepted a player of such calibre will always attract speculation, Hughes is instead focusing on Robinho's imminent return to City's first team.

"There is always speculation and noise surrounding Robbie, I think that's been the case since he came to the club," said Hughes on Sky Sports News .

"I think what you are referring to is some comments that originated from the Spanish press and we don't know the context, or how the questions were put to Robbie to get the response that they did.

"You can get a collection of quotes that when you tie them all up and put them together it looks like it's a story. I think there is that to be factored in. If you read the vast majority of the quotes you'll see there was a lot of positives in regards how he feels about Manchester City and what is ahead of us here."

He added: "That's going to happen and it does happen with Robbie on a regular basis. He's a great guy and the only thing that is frustrating at the moment is that he is not feeling well and can't make himself available for the team.

"Hopefully that will be resolved in the next week to ten days. We are not in the process of taking outstanding players out of the team.

"We want to complement the outstanding players at the club. We are looking to build, not dismantle."

Real Madrid v AC Milan preview

Real Madrid v AC Milan preview

Two of Europe's finest go head-to-head on Wednesday as Real Madrid host AC Milan in the UEFA Champions League.

Real currently top Group C with a perfect record after two games, while Milan will be looking to avenge their surprise home defeat to FC Zurich last time out.

The match sees a swift reunion for Kaka who spent six years with the Rossoneri prior to his blockbuster summer move to Santiago Bernabeu.

The teams last met in the 2002/03 season with Real securing a 3-1 victory on home soil, while Milan claimed a 1-0 home success courtesy of Andriy Shevchenko's winner.

Real news

On the plus side for Milan, who currently lie eighth in Serie A, Real will be without world record signing Cristiano Ronaldo, after he aggravated his ankle injury playing for Portugal.

Kaka should be restored to Manuel Pellegrini's starting line-up after Rafael van der Vaart made his first league start of the season in his place at the weekend.

Mahamadou Diarra could also be recalled after Lassana Diarra and Esteban Granero got the nod against Real Valladolid, although Guti (ankle) remains sidelined.

Fernando Gago (thigh), Ruud van Nistelrooy (knee) and Christoph Metzelder (calf) are all ruled out of the game due to injury.

Veteran striker Raul and summer signing Karim Benzema are sure to lead Pellegrini's front line with Ronaldo injured, meaning Gonzalo Higuain will have to settle for a place on the substitutes' bench.

Milan news

AC Milan boss Leonardo has problems of his own as he is without injured duo Gennaro Gattuso and Marco Storari.

Brazilian keeper Dida will replace Storari in goal, who is struggling with a thigh strain.

Former Real duo Clarence Seedorf and Klaas Jan Huntelaar will line up against their former employers. Seedorf helped the club win the Champions League twice, in 1998 and 2000.

Another player who is looking forward to returning to the Bernabeu is Milan playmaker Ronaldinho, who has fond memories of his past performances in the Spanish capital while wearing Barcelona colours.

Four years ago he received a standing ovation from the Madrid faithful after scoring twice in Barca's 3-0 triumph at the Bernabeu, although his form for the Rossoneri has been well below par.

Ujfalusi eyes Chelsea scalp

Atletico Madrid defender Tomas Ujfalusi believes his side are capable of beating Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League.

The beleaguered Spanish side travel to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday hoping to build on their poor start in Group D.

Abel Resino's men have picked up just one point in two games so far and now face a difficult trip to London where they will face the current leaders.

Despite his side's current dip in form, Ujfalusi insists Los Colchoneros are more than capable of springing an upset.

"We are eagerly anticipating this match," he said. "Chelsea have been playing well, yes, but we have a lack of points and want to do our best to take something from this game.

"We have the potential to beat every team in our group, including Chelsea."

Poor form

Atletico have slumped dramatically close to the foot of the Primera Division table after a poor run on the domestic scene.

Ujfalusi has bemoaned his side's form, admitting that defence has become a concern for the club.

"We have not been doing well, but our form has improved and I'm sure we will climb up the table soon," he said.

"We have conceded too many goals, but that is because of the offensive style of football in the league.

"Everyone is attacking but the defenders have to play their part too."

He added: "The targets remain the same - in La Liga we must finish in a Champions League place and in that competition this year we want to make it past the group stages."

Ujfalusi went on to rubbish reports in the Spanish press suggesting he was under investigation for signing two professional contracts with Sevilla and Atletico.

"Things that are written in the press go beyond me," he said. "The only reality and truth is that I have signed just one contract, with Atletico."

Ronaldo tips Messi for award

Cristiano Ronaldo has tipped Barcelona forward Lionel Messi to win the 2009 Ballon d'Or award ahead of him.

The Portugal and Real Madrid winger, who joined Los Merengues for a world record Ј80million during the summer, won the prize last year but has tipped Messi to scoop this year's honour.

"To win an individual trophy, you need to have won collective trophies," he told France Football magazine.

"So the favourite for Ballon d'Or is a Barcelona player. A lot of Barcelona players could win it - Xavi, Eto'o (now at Inter), Messi too, who is obviously the favourite.

"Why not him? If he gets it, he would deserve it."

Ronaldo, who is currently sidelined with an ankle injury, also conceded that Barcelona are the team who are currently playing the best football in Spain, although he insisted this would change when Real start to gel.

"Of course we don't play as a team so far at Real," he added. "We still have a lot of work to do.

"But we are on the right way. It is true Barcelona plays better football than us - but why? Because they have been together for several seasons.

"Barca is better than us today, but the real question is, who will be ahead in the end?"

Barca to monitor Robinho

Barca to monitor Robinho

Barcelona sporting director Txiki Begiristain has again admitted that a winter swoop for Robinho is 'a possibility'.

The Manchester City striker has been linked with a move to Camp Nou for some time and the speculation increased recently when Begiristain refused to rule out a January transfer.

Begiristain is not sure at this stage whether Barca will need to strengthen their squad in the New Year but he will continue to track Robinho's progress.

"Last summer we tried to sign Robinho," Begiristain told Sport after Saturday's goalless draw with Valencia.

"Now he is about to return from injury, and we are prepared to make a move if there is a possibility.

"We are prepared to enter the market if we need reinforcements."

Ramires

Robinho, meanwhile, has recommended that Manchester City should look to sign his Brazilian compatriot Ramires when the transfer window reopens.

Ramires, who currently plies his trade with Benfica, is regarded as one of the most exciting midfield prospects in world football and Robinho believes he is good enough to succeed anywhere.

"I am a fan of Ramires and convinced he will go a long way," Robinho said in the Sunday Mirror .

"He is a great player and this is only his first year in Europe. He can adapt to any style and has the quality to become a star at any club."

Julio Baptista's agent insists his client has no intention of leaving Roma for a return to Spain.

The powerful forward was strongly linked with the Stadio Olimpico exit door over the summer.

Former club Sevilla, where Baptista played the best football of his career, were thought to be monitoring the Brazilian's situation closely.

But Baptista's agent Herminio Menendez told Corriere dello Sport : "I can rule out those reports.

"Julio is very happy at Roma and he is only thinking about Roma and next year's World Cup.

"We have had no contact with Sevilla or any other clubs."

Baptista scored nine goals in 27 league appearances with the Giallorossi last season after joining the capital club from Real Madrid.

Injuries have limited the 28-year-old to just two league appearances this term, but Menendez is convinced Baptista will soon return to action.

"The recovery is going well and I believe Julio will soon return to play as his muscular injury is not serious," he said.

"He has a great relationship with (Roma coach Claudio) Ranieri."

Baptista is under contract with Roma until June 2012.

Raul delighted with record

Raul delighted with record

Raul admitted he never dreamt he would go on to achieve so much at Real Madrid after he broke the club's all time appearance record on Saturday.

The striker celebrated the occasion with two goals against Valladolid to rack up his 711th appearance for Los Blancos beating Manuel Sanchis' record in the process.

Many felt the Real captain would have to make do with a more reserved role this term following the high profile summer arrivals of Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema but four goals from nine appearances this season has proved the doubters wrong.

Raul was credibly modest about the achievement and insisted he would have never got near the total without the help of his team-mates.

"This is incredible and I never believed I would add this many appearances for this club," he said.

"Now I fulfil 15 years at Real and if we analyse the numbers it is not easy. I am very happy and now I dream to win more titles this season.

"I am pleased with the gesture the club gave me before the match and I have always given my maximum on the field.

"This is my philosophy of life. My team-mates are decisive for the success in front of goal. Without the help of my team-mates I would never have reached this number."

Brazilian striker Luis Fabiano has hinted that he may leave Sevilla to pursue other opportunities.

The 29-year-old admits he is ready for a new challenge after helping Sevilla into the UEFA Champions League whilst forming a crucial part of Brazil's Confederations Cup triumph in the summer.

Fabiano has played and scored in both Los Rojiblancos' Champions League group games against Unirea and Rangers, earning him a number of high-profile admirers.

Manchester United, Manchester City and AC Milan have all shown an interest having seen him in action.

All three clubs will welcome the Brazilian's recent revelations, especially with his current contract coming to an end.

"I will look at other offers when my contract ends because as a footballer you must always look to profit from opportunities," he said.

Fabiano came close to signing for Milan in the summer transfer window but the club failed to meet Sevilla's Ј25million buy-out clause.

Although not ruling out a future move, Fabiano insists that, for the time being, he is concentrating on playing for Sevilla.

Sporting's hero was Miguel as he grabbed a brace for the visitors.

Gaizka Toquero pulled one back with ten minutes remaining for Bilbao, but the Basque side could not find an equaliser.

Espanyol moved into the top-eight following a 2-1 win over Tenerife in Barcelona.

Ivan Alonso's brace sandwiched an effort from Alejandro Alfaro to give

Mauricio Pochettino's men victory.

Osasuna find themselves in the top-half of the table after a comfortable 3-0 win over struggling Atletico Madrid.

A brace from Walter Pandiani in the opening 27 minutes sent Osasuna on their way and the victory was sealed on the half-hour when Carlos Aranda pounced.

Real Zaragoza threw away a two-goal lead at home to Racing Santander as they drew 2-2 at La Romareda.

Francisco Pavon (22) and Javier Arizmendi (33) looked to have set Zaragoza on their way to victory.

But two goals in the final ten minutes from Mohamed Tchite and Oscar Serrano gave Racing a share of the spoils.

Zaragoza also had Leonardo Ponzio sent-off in stoppage time.

Alonso makes CL vow

Alonso makes CL vow

Xabi Alonso admits winning the UEFA Champions League is Real Madrid's priority for this season.

An unprecedented summer of spending at the Bernabeu has raised expectations following what has been a disappointing couple of years in the Spanish capital.

Barcelona's supremacy under Pep Guardiola has only added to Madrid's desire to reverse their fortunes, but it is European rather than domestic silverware at the top of the agenda.

Alonso, one of the much feted Galacticos lured to Madrid over the summer, is keen to get his hands on Europe's premier club competition.

"The Champions League is the primary objective for Real Madrid this season," he said.

"The title will not be easy though as the competition is very open.

"We know the race will be hard because there are many strong clubs from England and Italy.

"But to win the trophy would be spectacular for us."

That the final is to be played at the Bernabeu has whetted his appetite further.

"The attraction to play the final at home is enormous but I do not believe it brings greater pressure.

"For clubs like Madrid we are obliged to fight on all fronts each season."

Transfer talk upsets Eboue

Transfer talk upsets Eboue

Emmanuel Eboue has reiterated his commitment to Arsenal amid speculation linking him with a switch to Atletico Madrid.

The Ivory Coast international was a transfer target for Fiorentina over the summer after a difficult few months at Emirates Stadium last season.

But a move failed to materialise and he has started the new campaign in fine form, helping the Gunners notch some impressive results.

Rumours have nevertheless surfaced to suggest that Eboue could soon be on his way to Atletico, with Spanish newspaper Supersport claiming a deal is close to being agreed.

Eboue has insisted there is no truth in the stories as he is still loving life with Arsenal.

"I am upset with all those links, it is paper talk," the 26-year-old told skysports.com .

"I have been linked all summer to Fiorentina, now it is Atletico.

"I don't know where they get the news but I am fine at Arsenal. I love this club."

He hopes to recover quickly but is likely to miss a number of key games for Real and Diawara has issued an apology for the poor challenge.

"I am sorry. I am sad and it's been tormenting me these last few days. I didn't intend to injure him," the Senegalese centre-back told AS .

"I hope from the bottom of my heart that he recovers as quickly as possible.

"I was so pleased to be marking Kaka or Cristiano Ronaldo. It was a dream come true but now with the defeat and everything that happened with Cristiano, it has become something dismal."

Espanyol shocked by Tamudo

Espanyol shocked by Tamudo

The Raul Tamudo saga has taken a fresh twist with Espanyol reacting angrily to claims from the player.

The striker denied accusations earlier this week that he was trying to force his way out of the club, saying he would be happy to sign a new deal.

However, Espanyol president Daniel Sanchez Llibre has now produced proof that Tamudo wanted to leave the club last season.

Sanchez Llibre showed the media a letter from the striker's agent, Tomas Duran, stating that he was keen to go, and branded the idea of a new deal as 'ridiculous'.

In the letter Tamudo's representative requested that the club change his client's buy-out clause from €30million to €2million for the winter transfer window last season.

"They [Duran and Tamudo] sent me a document demanding that we sign it," Sanchez Llibre stated.

"We declined because we cannot reduce the buy-out clause on the wish of the agent and also because we did not want to lose a centre-forward."

Ridiculous

While the club refused at first, they did eventually agree and told Tamudo he could go over the summer if an offer was made in time for them to find a replacement.

No clubs made concrete offers and so Tamudo was forced to stay and has now stated that he wants to remain at the club for the rest of his career, but Sanchez Llibre has other ideas.

"I do not understand why we would offer a new contract to him if we know he wants to go because it is written in this letter. It is ridiculous," the president added.

Tamudo is expected to leave the club in January or next summer at the latest when his contract expires, with Wigan understood to be interested in securing his services.

Henry blow for Barca

Henry blow for Barca

Barcelona striker Thierry Henry faces a spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.

Henry picked up the problem while on international duty with France in midweek.

The former Arsenal star was forced to limp off shortly after half-time of Wednesday's win over Austria.

Scans have shown Henry has sustained a slight strain and he faces up to ten days out of action.

It means Henry will miss the league games Valencia and Real Zaragoza, as well as next week's UEFA Champions League clash with Rubin Kazan.

The 30-year-old picked up the knock in the first half against Armenia on Saturday but played on till the break when he was replaced by Barcelona centre-back Gerard Pique.

Marchena will leave the Spain squad and return to Valencia, as he tries to recover in time for the crunch game against Barca at the Mestalla on Sunday.

He said: "The injury does not look good and the doctors have told me to exercise caution."

The former Benfica defender moved to Valencia in 2001 and has been capped 55 times for his country, scoring twice.
