Young Spanish Footballer Dies On The Pitch

Tragedy struck Spanish football again at the weekend as 22-year-old footballer, Francisco Javier Herrezuela Arroyo 'Guti', died on the pitch whilst playing for his team, Olímpica Valverdeña.

According to 20minutos.es, the defender collapsed on the field while the ball was out of play, and despite the best efforts of the local doctor, who tried to resuscitate him, he died just before reaching Juan Ramón Jiménez hospital in Huelva.

With Antonio Puerta (pictured) dying whilst playing for Sevilla in La Liga just over a year ago this incident again serves as a reminder of the real sorrow that can occur during football matches.

The team were playing in the Primera División Andaluza - Group 1, which is one tier below Tercera, and their game against Arcos was called off following the incident.
