Fernando Torres and David Villa were two of the most talked about players over the summer but yet neither have received much attention with regards to Balon D'Or nominations.
The two strikers have largely been forgotten about whilst Iker Casillas, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have been at the fore of proceedings. Speaking today the Liverpool striker acknowledged that he thinks there is a big campaign behind Casillas in Spain.
"You would have to be blind not to see the great campaign that there is in favour of Iker," he said, "I would be the first one to say he deserves it as much as anyone but [David] Villa, Xavi and myself are also candidates and nobody says it."
Indeed, Xavi was named as player of the tournament at the European Championships this summer and both Torres and Villa were instrumental in Spain's success. Nevertheless, the ex-Atlético Madrid player has said he does not think there is much chance of him winning it.
"In Spain there is not more than one possible winner. According to where you are you get better consideration and I do not like that different treament," he explained.
Torres said that for him to win the accolade would be like 'scaling Mount Everest or touching the sky' before going on to speak about a more mellow subject, Spain, and their chances at the World Cup.
"The advantage of this team is to have both excellent technical players and fighters," he revealed, "Nobody is alone, everything is shared, that way we can look into the eyes of the teams we have failed to beat."
"I will not say we are the favourite but we are desiring to play with Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Italy or France," he concluded.
