Figo not planning return

Figo not planning return

Luis Figo has dismissed reports that he could be set to postpone his retirement and join Real Mallorca or Tottenham this summer.

The Portuguese midfielder announced that he would be hanging up his boots at the end of last season after helping Inter Milan to the Serie A title.

He was nevertheless linked with a move to Spurs last month and Mallorca's prospective new owner Carlos Gonzalez is now reportedly keen to secure his services.

Figo remains adamant that he has no plans to play for another season, insisting that if he did not want to retire he would have stayed with Inter.

"I've heard about the interest but the person who it came from isn't even the president of the club yet," Figo told reporters in Portugal about Gonzalez.

"My assistant knows about the interest from Mallorca, but at this moment my priority is to rest and I'm not thinking about getting back on the pitch.

"If I wanted to continue playing football I'd have continued playing for Inter Milan.

"My future involves a different professional activity. I can't say more at the moment, but after hanging up my boots it's logical that I'm not going to stand still."

Zola sweet on Gudjohnsen

Zola sweet on Gudjohnsen

Gianfranco Zola has named Eidur Gudjohnsen as a possible summer target as West Ham bid to bolster their attacking options.

The Hammers recently revealed that forward Luis Boa Morte could be out until the New Year after sustaining anterior cruciate ligament damage.

With strike partner Dean Ashton looking bound for Stoke, Zola has limited options up front heading into the new season.

The Italian has been strongly linked with a move for Inter Milan's Mario Balotelli this week, with Carlton Cole now the only fit recognised striker.

Keen to bring in more than one name, he admits that a move for Barcelona striker Gudjohnsen would not be completely out of the question.

Wait and see

"Lots of players have been linked to West Ham and Gudjohnsen is one of them," he said.

"We would love to have him playing for us, but we will see what happens.

"We have to be more effective going forward and certainly we are on the lookout for another striker.

"I don't know who it will be, but hopefully somebody will come."

He added: "I am thinking more about Boa Morte himself, not about how I can replace him.

"My main concern is that he is better as soon as possible."

Costa blasts Zaragoza

Costa blasts Zaragoza

Ricardo Costa has hit out at Real Zaragoza after his transfer from Wolfsburg unexpectedly collapsed.

The former Porto defender had been set to join the La Liga outfit after a fee was agreed, only for the goalposts to be moved.

The Portuguese stopper claims Zaragoza tried to change the terms of the deal which led to him returning to Germany.

"When I was about to sign the contract I found out the conditions of the deal were different from those agreed," he told Wolfsburger Nachrichten .

Could not sign

"I could not sign the contract and now I'm back with Wolfsburg."

Wolfsburg manager Armin Veh is disappointed Zaragoza have gone back on their word and he believes there is more integrity in Germany's top flight.

"Zaragoza gave us a bank guarantee for the transfer, but we never received it," said Veh.

"The transfer couldn't go through as they never had a real agreement with us nor the player.

"It's unbelievable. In the Bundesliga someone's word is the law, elsewhere there are clubs that don't respect agreements."

Cadiz capture Tristan

Newly-promoted Segunda Division side Cadiz have bolstered their strike force with the addition of veteran striker Diego Tristan.

The former Spain international spent much of last season with West Ham, scoring three times from 14 Premier League appearances.

Andalusian-born Tristan started his career at Real Betis before also going on to play for Real Mallorca (twice), Deportivo La Coruna and Italian side Livorno.

Tristan's most successful season came in 2001/02 when he struck 21 league goals for Depor to claim the Pichichi award as the Primera Division's top scorer.

Zigic staying at Valencia

Nikola Zigic has declared that he wants to remain at Valencia after turning down offers from other clubs.

The giant Serbian striker has been linked with a move away from the club this summer after reportedly attracting interest from across Europe.

Blackburn and Aston Villa were both understood to be chasing 28-year-old but he has now made it clear that he is committed to Valencia.

He admits he did have plenty of options but is determined to fight for his place at the Mestalla after falling down the pecking order last season.

"I have rejected all the offers because my desire is to stay with Valencia the next season," Zigic told Las Provincias .

"I am very happy to return to the team and I am prepared to demonstrate to the coach (Unai Emery) that I should be in the team. This is my challenge now.

"My agent had many proposals from Spain and Europe but my decision was always clear. To stay at Valencia.

"I have not personally spoken with the coach but Valencia know my intentions and I will not change my mind."

Serbia are well placed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup and Zigic added: "This year is key and I need many minutes on the pitch."

Keirrison open to Roma loan

Barcelona new boy Keirrison would be willing to join Serie A outfit Roma on loan, according to his agent.

The Brazilian only moved to Camp Nou on Thursday, completing a big money move from Palmeiras, but is expected to be shipped out for the 2009/10 season.

The 20-year-old is reported to have attracted interest from Porto, Benfica, Ajax and Valencia, but the player is understood to prefer a switch to Italy.

It is not known whether Roma would be interested in a season-long loan deal, but Keirrison's representative is keen to explore the possibility of such a move.

"Keirrison? It's down to Barcelona," Dario Canovi told Radio Centro Suono Sport .

Comparisons

"I am aware that he didn't want to go on loan to Valencia and I think he could join Roma if they come forward for him.

"However, I am not sure if Roma have the space in their squad for a non-EU player."

Canovi believes his client would be a success in Italy, admitting comparisons to Fiorentina's Italian international Alberto Gilardino are not too far wide of the mark.

"People are right to compare him to Gilardino," he added.

"He is decisive in the box and he scores valuable goals."

Etoo closer to Inter

Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o is closing in on a move to Inter Milan with Zlatan Ibrahimovic moving in the opposite direction, according to his agent.

The Cameroon international's representative was in Milan on Wednesday and is close to finalising a lucrative five-year contract for the 28-year-old.

While Josep Maria Mesalles admits there is still work to be done on a deal, he believes an agreement could be finalised on Thursday.

Barcelona have reportedly offered €45million (Ј38.7m) plus Eto'o along with allowing Alexander Hleb to join on a year-long loan in exchange for Ibrahimovic.

Optimistic

"We still have to work a lot," said Mesalles. "But I am optimistic, the agreement is close.

"Eto'o wants to come to Inter and he is very happy to come to Inter. We have taken a lot of steps forward."

Ibra agrees Barca deal

Barcelona have reached 'an agreement in principle' with Inter Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The two clubs have worked out a swap deal involving Ibrahimovic and Samuel Eto'o, with Alexander Hleb also reportedly being offered to the Italian club on top of a cash payment of 40million euros.

Inter confirmed on Thursday they were on the verge of signing Eto'o and Barca have now stated that Ibrahimovic is also close to coming to Camp Nou.

"There are agreements in principle with the player and with Inter and the documents are being drawn up," sporting director Txiki Begiristain told Barca TV .

He added that only a few details remained to be worked out and Ibrahimovic could be presented as a Barcelona player as early as Monday.

Hleb

One potential problem could be Hleb's desire to stay at Barca and fight for a place in Pep Guardiola's side.

"I have a contract with Barcelona and am currently preparing for the new season with the team," the Belarus international told Sport Bild .

"My aim is to make the breakthrough here and be successful with this club."

Hleb's agent has also denied being contacted about a switch to Inter.

"Nobody has spoken to me or Alex about a possible transfer to Inter Milan," said Uli Ferber.

"We are all a bit surprised about the recent press reports, which we cannot confirm."

Marseille eye Heinze swoop

Marseille eye Heinze swoop

Marseille officials have travelled to Spain to try and persuade Gabriel Heinze to leave Real Madrid, according to reports in France.

The 31-year-old had a successful spell with Marseille's bitter rivals PSG, where he became a firm fans' favourite between 2001 and 2004, but that hasn't stopped l'OM chasing the defender.

The former Manchester United full-back could be allowed to leave on the cheap as Real look to recuperate some of the funds they spent on the likes of Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo, Raul Albiol and Karim Benzema.

However a stumbling block could prove to be the Argentine's wages with Marseille needing Heinze to halve his four million euros a year income at Real before they can even begin negotiations.

Heinze's contract with Real runs until 2011 but his chances at the Bernabeu appear limited despite playing in the 1-0 friendly win over Shamrock Rovers on Monday.

Meanwhile, Hertha Berlin have told Marseille that they want to take striker Andrew Ayew on a week-long trial before they commit to a permanent transfer.

The Ghanaian is surplus to requirements at the Stade Velodrome and Hertha were believed to be ready to bid 500,000 euros for the frontman.

Barca admit Ribery defeat

Barca admit Ribery defeat

Pep Guardiola has conceded that Barcelona's chances of signing Franck Ribery now appear 'impossible', while he has also told Thierry Henry that he will remain as a key figure if he stays fit.

Ribery has been heavily linked with a move away from Bayern Munich this summer despite the German club's insistence that he will be going nowhere.

Real Madrid's interest in Ribery has cooled following their capture of Karim Benzema and Barcelona have emerged as one of the frontrunners in the chase for his signature.

However, Guardiola does not expect the French playmaker to arrive at Camp Nou during the transfer window.

"It seems impossible to me. I think he will not come," said the Barca boss.

"First of all because Bayern does not want to let him go. And then because his agent prefers that he go elsewhere."

Henry

Former Arsenal ace Henry enjoyed a fine season with Barca last term but he did struggle with injuries towards the end of the campaign.

There has been speculation about the striker's future but Guardiola is counting on him to make a big contribution.

"The role he has will depend on him. If he is fit, he will play, and frequently," Guardiola told reporters.

Fabiano's agent questions offer

Fabianos agent questions offer

Luis Fabiano's agent has confirmed AC Milan's offer falls well short of the Sevilla striker's release clause.

Milan are keen to bolster their attacking line following Kaka's exit and new head coach Leonardo is a huge fan of his fellow Brazilian.

However, Fabiano's agent says that unless the Rossoneri increase their offer there is no chance of the parties agreeing terms.

Fabiano has a €30million (Ј26m) release clause in his contract, a figure more than double what Milan are currently prepared to spend.

Not enough

"Milan made a €14million (Ј12m) offer, a figure that was not enough to acquire the striker," said Jose Fuentes.

"This figure undervalues the player and hence it cannot be accepted. Sevilla have every reason for not wanting to accept this offer.

"We now await to see if Milan will make a second offer for Luis Fabiano.

"But if Milan do not increase their bid it's clear that the Rossoneri are not interested in Fabiano."

Real - No Arsenal bid for Klaas

Real - No Arsenal bid for Klaas

Real Madrid general director Jorge Valdano has dismissed reports that Arsenal have made a bid for Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

Arsenal have been linked with a move for the Dutch striker as a potential replacement for Manchester City target Emmanuel Adebayor.

North London rivals Tottenham are also reported admirers of Huntelaar, who is set to leave Real just six months after his arrival from Ajax.

Stuttgart have had an offer accepted by Real, but Huntelaar is rumoured to be stalling on a move to the German club as he awaits any further interest.

However, Valdano has confirmed that Stuttgart remain the only club to have made a concrete offer which is acceptable to Real.

"Only one formal offer exists and that is Stuttgart's," stated Valdano to the Spanish media.

Meanwhile, Stuttgart coach Markus Babbel says he is happy to wait for Huntelaar to make a decision regarding a move to the Bundesliga.

Babbel said: "The important thing is that I know that we are working on a transfer, and not only that of Huntelaar, but also alternatives.

"He is a player that we really like, now it is down to him. But whether that is tomorrow or next week, that's not so important."

Oliveira nears UAE move

Brazilian striker Ricardo Oliveira is set to clinch a move to United Arab Emirates outfit Al-Jazira.

The former AC Milan player, who is co-owned by Real Zaragoza and Real Betis, confirmed he has agreed to the switch after both clubs accepted a bid totaling around €15 million.

"After considering my family, I have decided to accept this opportunity," the 29 year old told AS .

"Leaving La Liga is difficult but this move is very important for me. Zaragoza and Betis had also pushed for this deal to go through so everyone will benefit from this.

"I hope the Betis supporters will understand my perspective."

Oliveira spent last season on loan at Betis from Zaragoza and recently stated he was happy to stay at the club despite their relegation from the Primera Division.

Italian side Lazio were reportedly keen on signing the player at the start of the month, but Oliveira rejected their overtures.

Espanyol teenager Roman Golobart claims to be close to a move to Premier League side Wigan.

The 17-year-old was thought to be on the verge of joining the Latics last summer before the deal failed to materialise.

But centre-back Golobart now says that he is set to move to the DW Stadium as a result of manager Roberto Martinez's persistence.

He told Spanish media: "The sporting challenge is key for me and is more important than the money.

"I want to improve my level and I see less opportunities at Espanyol so I have accepted a move.

"Roberto Martinez has insisted on my arrival and this has been key."

Agent - No rush for Zlatan

Zlatan Ibrahimovic's agent insists there is no rush for the Inter Milan striker to complete a move to Barcelona.

Inter and Barca have been holding talks over a deal which would see Ibrahimovic move to Camp Nou, and Samuel Eto'o and Alexander Hleb head in the opposite direction.

Barca president Joan Laporta has confirmed there is an 'agreement in principle' between the two clubs, with Inter also due to receive a fee.

However, Ibrahimovic's agent Mino Raiola has moved to cool reports in Spain that the Swedish striker will quickly finalise his switch to the European champions.

Raiola revealed his immediate priority is tying up the loose ends of Brazilian full-back Maxwell's transfer from Inter to Barca.

"As for the negotiations between Barcelona and Inter for Ibrahimovic, it is not done yet and it won't be until I see my player's signature on a contract that I have read," Raiola told Radio Radio .

"I can guarantee that it's not sealed for Zlatan. I can tell you that I will not start talking about this now, because for today and tomorrow I will only focus on Maxwell.

"Ibrahimovic has until the end of August to keep discussing this, as that is when the transfer market closes."

Zokora targets Sevilla glory

Didier Zokora has exclusively told skysports.com that he still loves Tottenham but is now hoping for domestic and European glory with Sevilla.

The 28-year-old Ivory Coast international spent three years at White Hart Lane, winning the League Cup in 2008 and then reaching the final again the following year.

And, after securing a move to Spanish high-flyers Sevilla, Zokora has thanked Spurs for taking his career to the next level.

"This is a great time for me," he told skysports.com .

"To move from one big league to another is very good for my career.

"I had a good start with ASEC Mimosas and then moved on to Genk and St Etienne.

"Tottenham were great for me - I learned a lot in the English league. I think the difference is that English sides have a never-say-die attitude.

"Tottenham is a great club. I loved it there and played in two cup finals.

"I was a bit disappointed never to score for them, but my job was to protect the defence."

Glory

Zokora says he is hugely excited to be moving to Sevilla and is now hoping to make a major impact in La Liga and the UEFA Champions League.

"Seville is a nice city," he said. "The weather will be great for me and my family.

"They're a great team as well, with great players.

"I want to win La Liga and do really well in the Champions League.

"Real and Barca are the favourites, but we can have a big say in who will win the league."

Milan must up offer - Agent

Milan must up offer - Agent

Luis Fabiano's agent Jose Fuentes has warned AC Milan that they must travel to Spain and raise their offer or risk losing out on the striker.

The Sevilla frontman is said to favour a move to the San Siro although negotiations have stalled after Milan offered just Ј12.5million.

The Spanish side are thought to value the 28-year-old at closer to Ј18million, meaning that the two clubs are still a long way off agreeing on a fee.

Rossoneri officials stated that the deal had come to 'a dead end' but Fuentes has called for the Italians to prove how much they want the Brazilian.

"We are waiting for Milan to take the first step and begin negotiations with Sevilla," Fuentes told Telelombardia .

"We cannot hang on for a week, because it will be easy for Luis Fabiano and Milan to reach an agreement on terms.

"Milan have got to fly to Seville, raise their offer and make a small sacrifice quickly to take him away. The player will cost Ј18million."

Courtesy

Milan fans are growing restless with the lack of transfer activity at their club especially following the sale of influential star Kaka to Real Madrid for Ј55million.

Despite the funds generated from the Kaka sale remaining untouched the Serie A giants still tried to land Fabiano for the cheaper price of Ј9million after speaking to the Rio and Stellar group who own a small percentage of the player's contract.

The move is said to have angered Sevilla but Milan general manager Adriano Galliani insists they were not going behind the Spanish club's back.

"It was a courtesy meeting, even if we explained that the only reference point for us in these negotiations are Sevilla.

"They are the only ones who can release the transfer."

Galliani increased doubts on the deal when he added that the Rossoneri may not look to increase their initial offer.

"Our offer remains the same: Ј12.5million. Sevilla do not agree and so for the moment we will wait and see what happens."

Qualified

Meanwhile Milan boss Leonardo has secured his UEFA A second category coaching badge.

The Italian football federation had given him special dispensation due to the fact that he had played at the highest level in the 1994 World Cup for Brazil but the former midfielder decided to take the course anyway.

Barca agree Maxwell deal

Barca agree Maxwell deal

Barcelona are closing on their first signing of a quiet close-season with the likely acquisition of Inter Milan defender Maxwell.

While arch rivals Real Madrid have been responsible for unprecedented spending following a trophyless campaign, Treble winners Barca have seemingly been content with their lot.

Barca boss Pep Guardiola is expected to make signings though and it is Brazilian Maxwell that will become his first of the summer for a €5million (Ј4.3m) fee agreed with Inter.

The Catalan giants have been on the lookout for a new left-back following the departure of veteran Sylvinho.

Maxwell, who made 33 appearances for the Italian champions last season, is the man they have plumped for after negotiations with Deportivo La Coruna for Filipe Luis failed to yield an accord.

Real admit doubts over duo

Real Madrid have admitted that they look set to miss out on transfer targets Xabi Alonso and Franck Ribery.

Real have embarked on a remarkable summer spending spree, bringing in Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema and Raul Albiol.

But returning president Florentino Perez's recruitment drive is not expected to end with that quartet and moves for Liverpool midfielder Alonso and Bayern Munich's French ace Ribery have long been mooted.

However, both the Anfield outfit and the Bundesliga giants are not keen to part with their players and have insisted they are not for sale.

Real Madrid sporting director Miguel Pardeza confirmed that their interest in the duo could well come to nothing, although he did hint they could continue their pursuit of the Spain international.

Negotiations

Pardeza told Cadena SER : "Rumours have abounded this week.

"Xabi Alonso is a great player and we can't deny that this team would greatly benefit from his work, but it looks like the situation may not end up well for us.

"We'll nevertheless keep fighting for him and hope negotiations become reasonable again."

He added: "Bayern Munich haven't even shown interest in transferring Ribery.

"It doesn't seem to be reasonable to keep insisting when so much money is asked for a player."

Dudek wants Alonso reunion

Jerzy Dudek is hopeful that his former team-mate Xabi Alonso can join him at Real Madrid this summer.

Real president Florentino Perez has made the Liverpool midfielder his next big transfer target but talks seem to have broken down.

The Reds are thought to value the Spaniard at around Ј30million while Real are said to only be prepared to part with Ј20million.

However Dudek, who played with Alonso for three seasons at Anfield, is hoping that the two clubs can come to an agreement.

"I don't know (what's happening) let's hope so," he told Sky Sports News .

"This club needs good players and Xabi is a good player."

Settling in

Dudek also confirmed that pre-season at their training camp in Ireland was going well with world record signing Cristiano Ronaldo settling in quickly.

"I think we are happy with what is going to happen on this trip ahead of the new season," he added.

"Cristiano is a nice guy and he wants to help us and we are happy with this.

"We are on the stage where we have little contact with the ball but next week we have some games and we will see how he compares."

The former Feyenoord shot-stopper also pointed out that failure was not an option this term following their extravagant spending this summer.

"I don't think we have another possibility because at this stage we always think about winning La Liga and the Champions League," he added.

"We need to win the trophies, that is a clear message to us."

Kaka insists his top priority this season is to help Real Madrid win the UEFA Champions League.

The Liga giants are expected to challenge on all fronts this summer following Florentino Perez's monumental spending spree.

Real's new president is in his second stint at the helm of the Santiago Bernabeu outfit and has spent almost Ј200million on new players.

Along with landing Kaka, Real have also brought in the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Raul Albiol.

Former Milan ace Kaka sees the Champions League trophy as the one Real want the most ahead of the Liga title or Copa Del Rey.

"I think the Champions League is the tournament every club wants to win. Every player wants to win the Champions League," he told Real Madrid TV .

"With this new project under Florentino Perez, I think Real Madrid can win it again."

The 27-year-old, who had been strongly linked with a move to Manchester City earlier this year, insists he would only leave AC for Real.

"If one day I had to leave Milan I wanted to come to Real Madrid," he added. "The most important thing is that my journey here has started.

"I'm just happy to be part of the best team in the world. You can play with the best players in the world.

"I'll be delighted to play with Ronaldo, Raul and Casillas and a lot of other players that play here. It's amazing."

Blake’s loss seals U.S. exit from Davis Cup

POREC, Croatia - Croatia eliminated the United States from the Davis Cup after Marin Cilic beat James Blake for an insurmountable 3-1 lead in the quarterfinals.

Cilic defeated Blake 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 Sunday to help Croatia reach its first Davis Cup semifinals since winning the competition in 2005.

Croatia will take on the Czech Republic at home in September. The Czechs beat Argentina 3-2 on Sunday.

Croatia took a 2-0 lead after Ivo Karlovic rallied to beat Blake and Cilic outlasted Mardy Fish in five sets in Friday's opening singles. Bob and Mike Bryan beat Croatian duo Roko Karanusic and Lovro Zovko in Saturday's doubles.

Third-seeded Sam Querrey upsets Santoro

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) -Sam Querrey of the United States used his big serve to upset two-time defending champ Fabrice Santoro of France, 6-3, 7-6 (2), on Saturday to reach the finals of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships.

His win sets up the first all-American final in seven years. The 21-year-old Querrey ended Santoro's dominance on Newport's grass courts. Santoro, the second seed, was 12-0 and had lost just one set before the upset.

Before play, Monica Seles highlighted the 2009 class that was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

The third-seeded Querrey, looking for his second ATP event title, will face lucky loser Rajeev Ram, a 6-3, 6-4 winner of Belgium's Oliver Rochus, on Sunday. He had 18 aces against the 36-year old Santoro, four coming in the tiebreaker.

"Obviously I served incredibly," Querrey said. "I was placing it well. A lot of aces. If he dictates, he's tricky."

Querrey won his first career event in Auckland in January. The 25-year old Ram will be playing his first ATP final.

"I had a pretty good feeling that this could be a great week for me," Ram said. "I felt good coming in. Granted, I didn't know I'd make the finals."

Santoro, the oldest active singles player on the ATP Tour who said earlier in the week that this is his last season on the tour, didn't have an answer for Querrey's big serve with his unique style of two-handed cuts and slices.

"He was serving very good," Santoro said. "I will remember this tournament forever for the record I have."

Taylor Dent beat James Blake in the 2002 final.

Ram withdrew from his qualifier match Monday, but was the lucky loser with top-seeded Mardy Fish withdrew to replace Andy Roddick on the United States Davis Cup team.

Roddick withdrew with an injury after his epic Wimbledon final loss to Roger Federer.

The 35-year-old Seles was enshrined during a ceremony on Newport's grass courts. She was the world's No. 1 women's player for 178 weeks and won nine Grand Slam singles titles.

Donald Dell, Andres Gimeno and Dr. Robert Johnson were also inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Bogomolov unexpectedly in Newport spotlight

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) -Alex Bogomolov Jr. unexpectedly found himself in the spotlight at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships on Wednesday, upsetting fifth-seeded Arnaud Clement of France 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round of the rain-hampered event.

Playing in the one of the few mid-afternoon matches, Bogomolov beat Clement in front of an unusually large crowd on a side court.

Heavy rain halted the only three matches that were played Tuesday. Despite bright sunshine, center court and one of the two side courts were still soggy Wednesday.

Officials were unable to get center court in playable condition despite spending most of the day trying.

Three of the matches scheduled for one of the side courts were postponed.

In other opening-round matches, Nicholas Mahut of France beat American Amer Delic 6-4, 6-4; third-seeded Sam Querrey, the highest seeded American left, ousted Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo of Spain, 6-3, 6-2, while sixth-seeded Philipp Petzschner of Germany defeated Horacio Zeballos of Argentina 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-2 in match that started Tuesday.

Two-time defending champion Fabrice Santoro of France had his match against Italy's Flavio Cipolla halted by rain tied 3-3 in the first set.

With fans two and three rows deep standing behind one of the baselines, 180th-ranked Bogomolov won his first ATP tour match since beating Querrey in the second round of Miami in March 2006.

"I don't know how to prepare for that," Bogomolov said of the unexpected crowd. "I don't know why it didn't bother me like it did him."

Bogomolov, who was born in Moscow but now lives in Miami, broke Clement's serve in the ninth game of the final set to take control.

He had left wrist surgery in March and lost four Challenger events this year.

"Tennis is tough," Bogomolov said with a smile. "I come back and lose four Challenger events, go to Wimbledon and lose in the first round and come here and beat the 59th player in the world."

Blake to play 6-foot-10 Karlovic in Davis Cup

POREC, Croatia (AP) -James Blake knows the importance of winning the opening match in Davis Cup competition, and the American faces that task when he meets huge-serving Ivo Karlovic of Croatia.

Blake will lead the U.S. team in the quarterfinals after Wimbledon finalist Andy Roddick withdrew because of a hip injury. Roddick pulled out Monday, a day after losing an epic five-set final to Roger Federer at Wimbledon.

"If you win, it relieves a lot of pressure for the second singles," Blake said after Thursday's draw for the best-of-five series.

The 6-foot-10 Karlovic reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals, losing to Federer. Karlovic served up a record 51 aces in a match last week at Wimbledon, and 55 at the French Open.

"You have to take chances of your rare opportunities against him, maybe in tiebreaks, and try to keep your serve," Blake said.

Mardy Fish, who replaced Roddick, will play Croatia's No. 1 Marin Cilic in the second singles on Friday.

Fish had to make last-minute schedule changes to arrive at the Croatian seaside resort.

"I'm obviously excited to fill in for Andy," he said. "That's my obvious role in the past couple of years."

This will be Croatia's fifth appearance in the quarterfinals, but it's bidding to reach the semifinals for the first time since winning the competition in 2005. Croatia has won 10 of its last 11 home ties.

Cilic, ranked No. 15, said Croatia's chances in the series are 50-50. He considers Mike and Bob Bryan, the top-ranked doubles team, as a major American advantage.

"Their almost assured victories in the doubles in the Davis Cup have a huge influence," Cilic said. "They give a major boost to the single players to make them more relaxed."

In doubles play Saturday, the Bryan twins will meet Karlovic and Lovro Zovko. In the reverse singles on Sunday, Cilic will play Blake and Karlovic will face Fish.

The United States, the 32-time champion, has never beaten Croatia in Davis Cup competition. The two nations have met twice, in 2002 and in 2005.

The U.S., the 2007 Davis Cup champion, is bidding to reach the semifinals for the fourth year in a row. Last year, the Americans lost to eventual champion Spain in the semifinals.

The winner of the best-of-five series will face the Czech Republic or Argentina in the semifinal in September.

Engaged? Kournikova sporting diamond ring

KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa. - Anna Kournikova was sparkling brighter than usual.

Kournikova, who has long been linked to singer Enrique Iglesias, showed up for Monday night’s World Team Tennis match with a huge diamond ring on her left ring finger — the finger normally reserved for engagement rings.

When asked the significance of the ring by The Associated Press, Kournikova replied, “I thought you were the good press.” The former Grand Slam doubles champion put her hand behind her back and did not elaborate.

Kournikova was scheduled to play for the St. Louis Aces. She will miss the season with a wrist injury, and wore a protective wrap on her left hand.

She still participated in a kid’s clinic, signed autographs and cheered on her teammates.

Serena jokes about grunting on Letterman

NEW YORK - Serena Williams believes grunting may give players an edge — not that she’s apologizing for the advantage.

Williams appeared on the “Late Show with David Letterman” on CBS on Monday night, two days after beating her sister in the Wimbledon final then teaming with Venus to win the doubles title. Williams joked with Letterman about the cacophony some players make, which was the target of media criticism during Wimbledon.

Asked if the noise can be distracting to quieter opponents, Williams said, “I often wonder that.”

“I’m thinking like we were playing just recently in the finals and Venus and I were grunting really loud in the doubles and the other girls weren’t doing anything,” she added. “And after the point, I was thinking, ’Wow, that was pretty loud. Was that distracting for them?”’

Williams said she was inspired by Monica Seles growing up.

“She’s like the first person that I know that really used to grunt really loud and really hard, so that’s kind of how I modeled my grunt after,” Williams said. “Yeah, because you have to have role models when it comes to grunting.”

She added that grunting “advanced in everything.”

“Like if I play golf, I grunt,” she said. “If I’m playing soccer and I kick the ball, I grunt.”

Citing hip, Roddick pulls out of Davis Cup

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) -Wimbledon runner-up Andy Roddick withdrew Monday from the U.S. Davis Cup team's quarterfinal at Croatia, citing a right hip flexor injury.

The U.S. Tennis Association announced that Roddick wouldn't participate in this week's Davis Cup matches because he was hurt during his loss a day earlier to Roger Federer at the All England Club - a match that finished 16-14 in the longest fifth set in Grand Slam final history.

Roddick slipped and tumbled to the grass in the eighth game of the fourth set Sunday. He stayed down for a few moments, then rose, grimacing, and toweled off.

The 26-year-old American would go on to play for more than another 1 1/2 hours, finally succumbing when Federer broke him for the first time all match in the 77th and last game.

After the match, Roddick was asked whether he hurt himself in that fall, and he replied, "No. It was OK."

He is being replaced on the U.S. Davis Cup team by Mardy Fish, who reached the third round at Wimbledon. Roddick is ranked No. 6, while Fish is No. 23.

When he was asked to play Davis Cup, Fish pulled out of this week's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport, R.I., where he was the tournament's top-seeded player.

Roddick had played in 18 consecutive Davis Cup matches for the United States, helping the country with the 2007 title.

"Andy has been a stalwart for this team the past nine years, and his dedication to Davis Cup and his teammates is unquestioned," U.S. captain Patrick McEnroe said.

Croatia hosts the U.S. on clay at Porec, Croatia, starting Friday.

"Mardy is a Davis Cup veteran and we appreciate his willingness to join the team on short notice. He has been playing well and we are glad to have him back in the singles lineup," McEnroe said. "Andy had a great run at Wimbledon. He battled for more than four hours yesterday and fought hard to reach the final. Understandably, his body is not up for the rigors of Davis Cup in such a short turnaround."

Fish will be joined in singles action for the U.S. by James Blake, while twins Bob and Mike Bryan will play doubles.

Wimbledon quarterfinalist Ivo Karlovic and Marin Cilic will lead Croatia, which won the Davis Cup in 2005.

"It's worse for us," Goran Prpic, Croatia's Davis Cup captain, said in Porec. "Instead of an injured Roddick, who after such a final at Wimbledon would have had to play matches on clay, we'll have to face a motivated Fish."

True Grand Slam possible, Laver says

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) -The last man to win a true Grand Slam in tennis thinks it could happen again.

Rod Laver won all four of the sport's most prestigious tournaments in 1962 and 1969, and he said Sunday at Wimbledon that Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are both capable of matching the feat.

Invited by the All England Club to attend Sunday's Wimbledon final between Federer and Andy Roddick, Laver said Federer "would have won a Grand Slam if Rafa wasn't there."

Federer won three of the four major titles in 2004, 2006 and 2007. The latter two years, he lost to Nadal in the French Open final.

"The Australian, the U.S. and Wimbledon was pretty easy for him, when you look back at his career, winning three of each one," Laver said. "But Nadal came along and pushed him back."

Federer entered Sunday's match with 14 Grand Slam singles titles, tied with Pete Sampras for the most in history. Federer began the day with five titles at Wimbledon, five at the U.S. Open, three at the Australian Open and one at the French Open.

Roy Emerson won 12 major championships, and Laver won 11, although he was barred from competing in those tournaments from the time he turned pro in 1963 to the start of the Open era in 1968.

Don Budge is the only man other than Laver to win a calendar-year Grand Slam, doing it in 1938.

"It all has to line up in a way that you have to be fortunate to play your best tennis at the right time. That's the way it is," Laver said.

As for the debate about whether Federer might be the greatest player ever, Laver said that's the wrong way to frame the discussion.

"I've always thought that you're the best in your era. That to me is a pretty good compliment to your game, to your tennis, over your career. You know, if Roger gets to 16, 17 Grand Slams, you know, people in the press are the ones that are wanting to say it: Who's the best ever?" Laver said. "It's hard for anyone, I think, to come out and say who's the best ever."

The 70-year-old Laver, a left-hander from Australia who now lives in California, was effusive in his praise of Federer and his game.

"It's amazing what sort of shots he can come with from impossible positions. It's a great feeling of being able to watch the talent that he has and the opponents that he beats comfortably," Laver said.

"It's great that tennis has someone like Roger. We always look at Roger, he and Tiger Woods are good friends, fighting to see who can have the best number of Grand Slams in golf and tennis."
