Steven Gerrard slotted home a 94th-minute equaliser from the spot on Tuesday night to maintain the Reds' unbeaten record at home, and in Europe, this season.
But even Captain Fantastic himself was unsure of whether he should have been awarded the penalty. The Atletico players and fans were less hesitant in their appraisal of the incident.
Gerrard went to ground after charging into Mariano Pernia as he chased a loose ball on the right side of the Atleti box. Several seconds of confusion were followed by a jubilant uproar from the Kop as referee Hansson pointed to the spot.
The Swedish official gave the call after consulting with his assistant, but The Sun has revealed that he later questioned the linesman's judgement.
Hansson told SVT, the Swedish television station: "From my angle, I am not convinced that it is a penalty but according to UEFA rules I’m not allowed to make any comment on specific match incidents."
Argentine left-back Pernia gave a heated interview on Spanish radio in which he claimed that the linesman in question later apologised for his error.
But Liverpool fans may feel justice was served after they were denied a penalty earlier when Luis Perea handled in the his own area, although Jamie Carragher escaped with similar offence at the other end.
