Maxi Enraged By Late Penalty Decision

Atlético Madrid might have not have been the better side at Anfield tonight but they had executed their game plan well and looked on course for a famous win, until the referee intervened in the dying moments.

The man in yellow blew for a penalty to the home side after Steven Gerrard went down theatrically under a soft challenge from Mariano Pernia in the box. Speaking after the game the away captain, Maxi Rodríguez, says the team are enraged by the decision which cost them the win.

"It engrages us to draw like this," he fumed.

"After preparing for a game for a week there is that unjust decision in the last minute and it gives them an opportunity. The referee was wrong and made it a draw."

Maxi went on to say how the penalty was a 'mistake' before praising his side for their 'solid play from front to back' but saying they wasted a few opportunities to score more goals. In a short press conference though he never strayed far from the fact that his team had the game won until the last kick.

"Up until the 92nd minute we had the three points and then the penalty comes," he mused.
