Gerrard Not Sure If Penalty Was Right

The Reds were handed a Champions League Group D repreive in injury time when Gerrard was adjudged to have been fouled by Mariano Pernía while challenging for a high ball.

The Liverpool skipper needed no second invitation to stroke home the resulting penalty and give his side parity. Had Atlético Madrid led at the end of game, they would have qualified for the last 16.

Gerrard declared that Liverpool deserved to gain a reward from the match, even if the penalty decision was harsh.

He told the ITV 1: "I think we controlled the game but first half we weren't good enough.

"We raised it at half-time and it finally came in injury time. I'm not sure it was a penalty. I got their first and I think if that is outside the area you get a free-kick."

"If it happened at the other end we would be livid. That's football. It's a point and we move on [after the weekend loss to Tottenham Hotspur].

"It is important because we have got a point. Good teams don't usually lose two in a row and we showed a lot of character."

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez was more forthcoming with his views. He believes that the penalty decision was correct.

He said: "I think so, watching the replay. I think it was the linesman who has given the penalty but it is better not to talk too much about the referee."
