Atlético Madrid might have started this season in impressive style but following three consecutive defeats in the league they now find themselves in mid-table and things don't get any easier this weekend as they travel to El Madrigal.
Villarreal are undefeated in the league so far and whilst rumours have started this week that manager Javier Aguirre could lose his job if Atlético lose again, the president of the club, Enrique Cerezo, assured that no matter what the outcome he will be staying.
"No matter what happens against Villarreal, Javier Aguirre will continue to be the coach of Atlético Madrid."
"We want to remain amongst the top three in the the league and losing against Villarreal would be a big blow because we would fall even further behind the group ahead. However, we are only on match eight and there are still many games to play."
"I believe that if we play well against Villarreal we will get the three points that have escaped us recently and that will help us to be more relaxed with our league position," declared the president.
Indeed, were Atlético to lose this match they could potentially be thirteen points off the league leaders Valencia and even at this stage of the season that is a massive mountain to climb. Cerezo is under no illusions that this match, just like the Liverpool match, is a big one which they need to win.
"It is always a vital game, since the start of the season, because it is Villarreal," he opined, "I expect that the change the team showed against Liverpool will continue this weekend. I hope the side play a good game and win."
"In the end we obtained a good result to put us further towards qualifying for the quarter-finals of the Champions League and now we must focus on the league, first against Villarreal and then Mallorca," concluded Cerezo.
