Ronaldo's red appeal rejected

Ronaldos red appeal rejected

Cristiano Ronaldo has seen his appeal against a two-match ban thrown out by the Spanish football federation.

The Real Madrid winger saw red last Sunday during a 2-0 win over Malaga.

The Portuguese ace was ordered from the field 70 minutes into the Santiago Bernabeu contest after his swinging elbow caught Patrick Mtiliga in the face, leaving the Danish defender with a broken nose.

Ronaldo argued long and hard after the game that his actions had not been deliberate and that his dismissal was unfair.

As a result, the former Manchester United ace lodged an appeal to RFEF calling for his impending ban to be rescinded.

However, the Spanish football authorities have stood by their initial ruling and upheld the suspension.

Ronaldo is now set sit out Real's next two fixtures against Deportivo La Coruna and Espanyol.

Madrid have, however, confirmed that they will now present their case before Spain's sporting disciplinary committee (CEDD) in a bid to have the ban overturned.

Real rule out Rooney move

Real rule out Rooney move

Real Madrid have confirmed their admiration of Manchester United ace Wayne Rooney, but say no bid will be forthcoming.

The England international has been in blistering form for The Red Devils this season, with his four goals against Hull City taking his Premier League tally to 19 for the season.

Rooney has been credited with single-handedly maintaining United's title charge following last summer's world-record sale of Cristiano Ronaldo.

It had been thought the Spanish giants were weighing up a move for the 24-year-old in order to reunite him with ex-Old Trafford team-mate Ronaldo.

Extraordinary

While Real president Jorge Valdano concedes Rooney is an extraordinary player, he does not believe he would adapt to Spain's top flight.

"He is extraordinary, very, very good," he told Radio COPE .

"Rooney is English, we all know they find it difficult to adapt to another type of competition other than the Premier League.

"He is a very interesting player but we have not ever been interested."

Middlesbrough are understood to have made an enquiry for Japanese star Shunsuke Nakamura.

The former Celtic winger is currently plying his trade in Spain with Espanyol - who he joined last summer.

However, Nakamura has failed to make the expected impact in La Liga.

Now Boro boss Gordon Strachan - who was in charge of Nakamura during his time at Celtic - is understood to have made an enquiry about the 31-year-old.

Espanyol are reported to be open to a deal, with Boro said to be looking at a six-month loan.

Boro winger Adam Johnson is hoping to seal a move to Manchester City before Monday's transfer window closes and Nakamura's arrival could compensate for his departure.

Nakamura could be tempted by a move to The Riverside, with the promise of first-team football ahead of this summer's World Cup finals.

Martinez - Stojkovic can cope

Martinez - Stojkovic can cope

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez believes on-loan keeper Vladimir Stojkovic has enough experience to cope if he makes his Premier League debut at Blackburn on Wednesday.

The Serbia international made his Wigan debut on Saturday, and put in an impressive display in the 2-2 FA Cup fourth-round draw with League Two side Notts County.

He is now in line to play in the derby clash at Ewood Park on Wednesday as regular first-choice keeper Chris Kirkland is sidelined for a fortnight with a collarbone injury.

If he does play, Martinez believes the keeper - who is on loan from Sporting Lisbon - has enough experience to cope.

The Wigan boss said: "It is important Vladimir played in the FA Cup to get a taste of the English game.

"He has been with us for over two weeks now so he knows the players and he wants to play and that allows him to fight for his position with a bit of an insight into the British game.

Important

"You don't want to lose players like Chris but it is important we now have Vladimir and Mike Pollitt giving us competition in that position.

"He is an international goalkeeper and, when you are looking to go to a World Cup, you have that extra bit of experience and know-how on how to perform in any game you play.

"I don't know if they will look to target him but he is an experienced boy, he has played in four leagues around Europe and to play for Serbia you need to be of a certain assurance.

"If he plays, I have no doubts he will be ready and be a big asset for us.

"Blackburn have a huge physical threat and are very powerful and we will have to handle that."

Ruben latest

Meanwhile, Martinez has played down a claim by Spanish club Villarreal that striker Marco Ruben is due to sign for the Latics imminently.

The Primera Division side put out a statement on Tuesday morning claiming a deal was almost done and the Argentinian gave a farewell interview to the club's website.

But Martinez moved to play down reports of a pending Ј7million transfer, saying: "It is something that is not finalised or concluded yet so we cannot speak about it.

"It is the nature of where we are. It is people talking. Our focus is on the Blackburn game, which is massive.

"If we can help the players by bringing in others who have something different, that will be very welcome."

Jacobo suffers injury blow

Jacobo suffers injury blow

Valladolid have been dealt an injury blow with the news that goalkeeper Jacobo will be out of action for at least two months after undergoing emergency surgery on Monday night.

The Spanish shot-stopper was feeling unwell throughout Monday and was rushed to hospital by club doctors where he was swiftly operated on to remove a blockage in his intestines.

Valladolid have confirmed Jacobo will remain in hospital for a week and will then be out of action for two months.

The 26-year-old, who suffered a knee injury in November, started the first seven games of the season before losing his place to Justo Villar.

It is the second serious injury at the club in the past few days after Sisi had an operation on a fissure in his fibula, which is set to sideline him until the end of March.

Ruben accepts Wigan deal

Ruben accepts Wigan deal

Skysports.com understands Villarreal striker Marco Ruben has agreed a four-and-a-half-year contract to join Wigan Athletic.

Villarreal confirmed at the weekend that the club had reached a deal in principle with Wigan for Ruben to move to the DW Stadium.

A fee of Ј7million is understood to have been settled upon and Ruben has now accepted a contract with the Latics until 2014.

He is due to fly to England within the next 24 hours to finalise a deal which will help to boost Roberto Martinez's attack.

Martinez has been keen to improve his striking options in the January transfer window and is set to add Ruben to his ranks.

The Argentine, who holds an Italian passport, has been with Villarreal since 2008 and had a spell on loan at Recreativo last season.

He has spent this term with Villarreal's B team in the Segunda Liga and the 23-year-old is now on the brink of clinching a switch to the Premier League.

Ronaldo rues red card ruling

Ronaldo rues red card ruling

Cristiano Ronaldo has been angered by latest red card and claims his two-match ban for his dismissal against Malaga is "excessive".

Real Madrid's world record signing scored both goals to inspire the Spanish giants to a 2-0 win last weekend but marred his match-winning performance by being shown his second red card of the season.

The Portuguese international was given his marching orders in the 70th minute of the Primera Division encounter after his swinging elbow caught Patrick Mtiliga in the face.

Real have appealed the decision with a hearing set for Thursday and Ronaldo believes the ban is harsh despite breaking the Denmark defender's nose.

"Obviously I don't like it," the Ј80million player told AS . "I think the punishment is excessive and I hope the appeals committee reduce it.

"I want to play every week and I'm angry.

"My intention was always to play. It was never my intention to deceive the referee. I just tried to get rid of the Malaga player marking me. I hit him and I asked for his forgiveness. I'm very sorry about his nose."

If Real are unsuccessful in their appeal, Ronaldo, who has scored nine league goals this term, will miss Saturday's testing trip to fifth-placed Deportivo La Coruna as well as the home clash with Espanyol.

Manchester United and Wigan have shown a firm interest in teenage Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David De Gea, according to his agent.

The Latics are reported to have already had one offer for the 19-year-old rejected by the Spanish side, while United are closely monitoring his progress.

Atletico are currently in talks with De Gea over securing his services on professional terms and his representative, Hector Rincon, admits that will see his price increase dramatically.

Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson is eager to find a long-term successor to Edwin van der Sar, while Latics manager Roberto Martinez, who recently signed Vladimir Stojkovic, has ongoing concerns over Chris Kirkland's long-term fitness.

"A few Premier League clubs have been asking about De Gea," Rincon said. "Especially Wigan, who made an offer which Atletico turned down.

"Roberto Martinez thinks De Gea is ready for the Premier League but Atletico have insisted they want De Gea to stay at Calderon.

"Manchester are interested too. I didn't talk with Ferguson but an intermediary of Manchester confirmed there's real interest in De Gea."

Spanish Under-21 international De Gea has not yet signed professional forms at Atletico, with his current deal set to expire in 2011.

Rincon added: "Any club can buy him right now just by paying 12 million euros (Ј10.4million) because De Gea does not have a professional contract, but we are talking with Atletico to close the agreement."

Ronaldo hit with two-match ban

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo has been hit with a two-match ban after being sent off against Malaga on Saturday.

The Portuguese star scored both goals in a 2-0 win but was then shown a straight red card in the 70th minute for elbowing Malaga's Patrick Mtiliga in the face.

The Denmark defender had tugged at Ronaldo's shirt and the world's most expensive player lashed out, leaving Mtiliga with a broken nose.

The Spanish giants have decided to appeal the decision and the hearing has been set for Thursday.

"Seeing the move, he clearly did not want to hurt the opponent," Real's vice president, Emilio Butragueno, told Marca .

"I was a striker and when you are challenged you want to free yourself."

If Real are unsuccessful then Ronaldo will miss Saturday's trip to fifth-placed Deportivo La Coruna and the following week's visit of Espanyol.

The club's sporting director, Jorge Valdano, described the decision as "unfair and very hard".

"We regret very much the injury to the Malaga player and accept any decision, but we defend the conviction that we are right," he told Spanish radio COPE .

Although Ronaldo has scored 15 goals in 16 games for Real since leaving Manchester United for Ј80million in the summer, he has also been sent off twice.

The former Sporting Lisbon player was also given his marching orders in the 4-2 win over Almeria in early December after a second yellow card.

Primera Liga round-up

Barcelona maintained their unbeaten record on Saturday, while Sevilla broke out of their slump.

Barcelona stretched their lead at the summit to eight points with a comfortable 3-0 victory away at Real Valladolid.

It took just 21 minutes for the Catalan giants to make the breakthrough, with Xavi putting the finishing touches to a rapid counter-attack.

Less than 60 seconds later they made it two, with Dani Alves crashing home from distance.

Lionel Messi then wrapped things up in the second half when he fired high into the net shortly before the hour mark.

Sevilla broke out of their slump with a narrow victory on Saturday to keep their top-four hopes alive.

Four straight defeats had hindered their progress of late, but they got back to winning ways against out-of-sorts Almeria.

Alvaro Negredo netted the only goal of the game in a scrappy Andalusian derby after 10 minutes.

Santiago Acasiete picked up a pass from his goalkeeper Diego Alves on the edge of the box, but when he tried to play the ball back it stopped dead in a pool of water midway between the two and Sevilla midfielder Dirnei Renato nipped in to poke the ball inside where Negredo tapped into an empty net.

It was a heartbreaking way for Almeria coach Juan Manuel Lillo to suffer his first defeat since taking the reins before Christmas, but it was a much-needed victory for the hosts.

Deportivo La Coruna got their UEFA Champions League assault back on track with a 3-1 win over fellow high fliers Athletic Bilbao.

Depor entered the contest with just one win from their last six outings, a run which had seen them slip out of the title race.

They will now be hoping to leave their mid-season wobble behind them and push on into the New Year.

Luis Filipe edged them in front at the Riazor after 49 minutes, before Juca doubled their advantage 10 minutes later.

A Daniel Colotto own goal handed Bilbao hope 10 minutes from time, but Nunez Pablo Alvarez ensured there would be no way back for the visitors when he bagged a third for Depor in the 89th minute.

City must up Gago bid

City must up Gago bid

Fernando Gago's agent insists his client could leave Real Madrid, if the right offer comes along.

The Argentina international has grown frustrated at a lack of first-team opportunities at Santiago Bernabeu and is looking to move on.

Manchester City are among those to have shown an interest in the combative midfielder, with the Blues reported to have already lodged a bid to Real.

Their offer is believed to fall short of the Spaniards' valuation, though, and Roberto Mancini has been told he must shell out around €20million (Ј17.5m) if he wants to get his man.

City certainly have the financial clout to push through such a deal, but it remains to be seen whether they will pursue their interest in Gago or turn their attention elsewhere.

Untenable

The South American's agent, Marcelo Lombilla, believes an agreement could yet be reached with City, and he hopes the situation will become clearer over the next few days.

"The subject is not yet closed," he said.

"We want to speak again with (Real director general) Jorge Valdano and perhaps then the situation will change."

Gago feels life in the Spanish capital has become untenable, with the 23-year-old desperate to secure a switch before the January transfer window slams shut.

"I want to play and that has become impossible at Real," he said.

Ruben talks continue

Skysports.com understands, that Villarreal and Wigan are continuing talks over Marco Ruben.

The Argentine striker has already agreed terms with The Latics on a four-and-half year deal.

Ruben is understood to be very impressed with Latics chief Roberto Martinez and is eager to seal a move to the DW Stadium.

However, just as the deal looked set for completion a stumbling block emerged over the payments of the final fee.

Now Villarreal have announced that Ruben will be staying at El Madrigal - continuing to play for their B side in the Segunda Liga.

Wigan, though, have not given up hope of concluding the move, but with the window due to close on Monday - Martinez is believed to be weighing up other options in case the deal cannot be finalised.

Napoli have agreed to let Contini leave after seeing the experienced centre-half slip down the pecking order at Stadio San Paolo.

He will join Zaragoza with the club sat second from bottom in the Primera Liga and facing an uphill battle to preserve their top tier status.

Ronaldo angry at red card

Ronaldo angry at red card

Cristiano Ronaldo has insisted he did not intend to hurt Patrick Mtiliga after being sent off for elbowing the Malaga defender.

The Portuguese star had scored both of his side's goals in their 2-0 victory on Sunday before his evening took a turn for the worse on 70 minutes.

Ronaldo was shown a straight red card following the incident which left Mtiliga with a broken nose but he does not believe the punishment was fair.

While he is sorry that his opponent suffered an injury, Ronaldo maintains that it was not a deliberate attack and he should not have been dismissed.

"It was not my intention to injure Mtiliga. I'm very sad for what happened but calm," said the 24-year-old, who was also sent off against Almeria in December.

"Those who understand football know that my intention is always to play the ball. I learned in England not to deceive the referees.

"This is not a red card here or anywhere in the world and I'm not asking for protection. I've seen worse things in other games.

"I didn't mean to injure the lad. It was bad luck to hit him on the nose because he's only 1.70m and if he had been taller I would have struck his chest."

Ronaldo, who will now miss the clash with Deportivo La Coruna next week, has already spoken to Mtiliga.

"I always want to play and these things make me angry. I've spoken with Mtiliga and he told me that I didn't need to apologise because he doesn't believe I hurt him intentionally," he added.

"I wouldn't want to injure anybody. I'm not that type of person. I'm not a bad person. I only want to shine by playing football.

"Now I'm going to be angry when I get home because I won't be able to play through suspension."

Pellegrini

Real boss Manuel Pellegrini admits he did not get a good view of the incident, saying: "I couldn't see it. He had a great game, scoring two goals, but unfortunately he was mixed up in that incident that got him sent off."

Despite the victory which keeps Real in touch with leaders Barcelona, Pellegrini was less than pleased with his side's performance.

"I'm not happy with how we played. We were too individualistic at times against a good team that had not lost in nine games," he said.

"We scored two good goals but it's not been a game that I liked.

"We've had a perfect home run in the first half of the season. We know we can improve and in order to do that we must take it game by game."

Real win Canales race

Real win Canales race

Sergio Canales' father and agent, Angel Canales, claims his son has agreed to join Real Madrid.

The Racing Santander teenager has shot to prominence over recent weeks, with a number of eye-catching displays drawing admiring glances from Europe's top clubs.

At just 18-years-old the talented playmaker has become one of the continent's hottest properties.

Such interest has made it virtually impossible for Racing to convince the youngster than his long-term future lies at El Sardinero.

They could, however, benefit from the agreement reported to have been struck with capital giants Real.

Options

Los Blancos are said to have agreed a five-year contract with Canales, with Racing set to receive €6million compensation for a player who would be out of contract in the summer.

Real are also believed to have agreed to send the youngster back to Racing on loan for the next two seasons, with regular first-team football needed to help aid his development.

Chelsea, Barcelona and Manchester City were all reported to have been chasing Canales' signature during the January transfer window but, while they were prepared to offer a better financial package to player and club, the Spain Under 19 international feels a move to Madrid is the best choice for his career.

"The decision was Sergio's and he thinks that Real offer the best option in a sporting sense," said Angel Canales.

Argentina striker Marco Ruben has agreed to join Wigan Athletic, according to his Spanish club Villarreal.

The 23-year-old has given a farewell interview with Villarreal's website, saying he was quickly able to agree terms with The Latics.

Ruben is now set to travel to Wigan to put pen-to-paper on the deal and he is looking forward to working with manager Roberto Martinez.

Reports are speculating Wigan could pay anywhere up to Ј7million for Ruben, who will pen a four-and-a-half-year contract at the DW Stadium.

"I found out eight or nine days ago," Ruben told the club's official website .

"Since then the club have continued with negotiations with my agent and he told me it was done and all that was needed was my signature.

"I am happy to take this opportunity because it is a good coach (Roberto Martinez) and a great team."

Primera Liga round-up

Cristiano Ronaldo had a mixed evening at the Santiago Bernabeu as Real Madrid beat Malaga to move back to within five points of Barcelona.

Former Manchester United star Ronaldo scored a first-half brace, and was then sent off in the second period, as Real beat Malaga 2-0 at home.

Ronaldo broke the deadlock on 35 minutes and, four minutes later, added the second with a stunning 25-yard effort.

However, he blotted his copybook with 20 minutes to go after he was dismissed for elbowing Patrick Mtiliga in the face.

Despite Tenerife starting the day in the bottom three, Valencia were unable to find a way past and were forced to settle for a 0-0 draw.

Mallorca were another team to pick up a point on the road, with the 1-1 stalemate at Espanyol enough to lift them back into the UEFA Champions League places.

Espanyol took the lead just four minutes after half-time when Pablo Daniel Osvaldo finished after his initial shot had been blocked.

The visitors snatched a point 10 minutes from time when Borja Valero scored from the penalty spot after Ruben had been felled by Victor Ruiz.

Atletico Madrid crashed to another defeat after going down 1-0 away to derby rivals Getafe.

The only goal came on 39 minutes when Manu converted Pedro Leon's low cross at the far post, while Atletico had Paulo Assuncao sent off on 68 minutes for picking up a second yellow card.

Alex Geijo converted Mohamed Tchite's cross a minute before half-time to clinch Racing Santander a 1-0 success away to Sporting Gijon.

Villarreal continued their resurgence with a thumping 4-2 win at home over struggling Real Zaragoza, with the hosts scoring three times inside the opening 25 minutes.

Joan Capdevila scored from close range after just three minutes, Nilmar chipped in with the second on 19 minutes and Giuseppe Rossi then made it 3-0.

Zaragoza threatened a remarkable comeback in the second half as Eliseu pulled a goal back on 75 minutes and Lafita grabbed another on 82 minutes.

But with three minutes to go, Villarreal made certain of the points after Nilmar played in Ariel Ibagaza to score.

Xerez still have only one win to their name this season after the division's bottom club lost 2-1 at home to Osasuna.

Nacho Monreal provided Osasuna with a ninth minute lead before Xerez hit back on 22 minutes through Mario Bermejo's header.

However, Osasuna clinched all three points seven minutes from time after Juanfran teed up Javier Camunas for the winner.

Latics on the verge of Ruben deal

Wigan Athletic are on the verge of completing the signing of Villarreal striker Marco Ruben after the Spanish club confirmed that they have agreed to sell the Argentine.

Skysports.com revealed on Friday that the Latics were locked in talks with the La Liga side regarding a possible deal.

It has been reported that Villarreal will want to recoup the Ј5million they paid River Plate in 2008, which could mean a transfer will be worth at least that value.

Ruben, 23, is now due to travel to England next week to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms with Roberto Martinez's side.

A statement on Villarreal's official website read: "Villarreal and Wigan Athletic have reached an agreement in principle for the transfer of Marco Ruben."

Hamburg land Van Nistelrooy

Hamburg land Van Nistelrooy

Bundesliga outfit Hamburg have won the race to sign Ruud van Nistelrooy from Real Madrid.

The Dutch striker had featured prominently on the January wish list of numerous top clubs, with his prolific goalscoring exploits marking him out as a useful acquisition.

The former Manchester United frontman had been strongly linked with a return to the Premier League, with West Ham, Tottenham Hotspur and Stoke City known to be courting his services.

However, the 33-year-old has opted against a second stint in England, choosing instead to head for Germany.

He underwent a medical at Hamburg on Saturday, which he passed with flying colours despite seeing his career of late littered with niggling knocks.

Ambition

Van Nistelrooy has now signed a one-and-a-half-year deal at the AOL Arena.

He joins Hamburg with the club sat fifth in the Bundesliga table, five appoints adrift of league leaders Bayern Munich.

"I am very happy that it worked out and look forward to Monday when I will arrive in Hamburg," Van Nistelrooy said on the club's official website .

"Hamburg is a fantastic club with a strong team and great ambitions. I also have great ambitions."

He added: "And then I obviously hope that the national team coach gives me a call and that I can go to the World Cup."

Delighted

Hamburg coach Bruno Labbadia was delighted to have secured the services of the prolific Dutchman.

He said: "Ruud has proved his qualities impressively at some of Europe's top clubs. I am convinced that he will also score some important goals for HSV.

"It just emphasises the reputation of our club that a player like Ruud van Nistelrooy decides to join Hamburg."

Van Nistelrooy will leave Real with nothing but good things to say about his treatment in the Spanish capital.

"I have got to say that Real have behaved really well," he said. "The management have not put any obstacles in my way. I think a video will be shown before the game (against Malaga on Sunday) and then I will do a lap of honour. I really had a fantastic time in Madrid."

Diarra returns with injury

Mahamadou Diarra has returned to Real Madrid from African Cup of Nations duty with a knee injury.

The midfielder only reconvened with his domestic team-mates in the Spanish capital on Thursday, but is already set for a spell on the sidelines.

The 28-year-old sustained a knock to his right knee while away on international duty with Mali and is expected to be out of action for 15 days.

He was unable to help his country progress out of the group stages in Angola and will now be prevented from helping Real mount an assault on the Primera Liga title.

Should the timescale put on his recovery prove correct, Diarra will sit out fixtures against Malaga and Deportivo La Coruna.

He could come back into contention for Real's home date with Espanyol on 7th February.

Copa del Rey round-up

Racing Santander have edged ahead in their Copa del Rey quarter-final against Osasuna.

The first leg of their last eight encounter took place at El Sardinero on Thursday, with the hosts prevailing 2-1.

It took 60 minutes for the cup clash to spring to life, before there was a flurry of late activity.

Gonzalo Colsa broke the deadlock on the hour mark, before Papa Diop stepped off the bench to add a second for Racing six minutes from time.

Another substitute, Osasuna's Walter Pandiani, then handed the visitors a lifeline after 88 minutes, ensuring there will be all to play for in the return meeting.

Atletico Madrid would have expected to make light work of second tier opposition at Vicente Calderon, but they were held to a surprise draw by Celta Vigo.

The capital club have endured a disappointing campaign so far, but their progress in the cup had offered welcome relief.

They are, however, now sweating on a place in the last four after playing out a 1-1 draw with Celta.

The visitors gave an early signal of their intent when they took the lead after just three minutes through Roberto Trashorras.

Tiago did level for Atletico on 11 minutes, but they were unable to force a further breakthrough.

Zaragoza ring changes

Real Zaragoza continue to ring the changes - with one in and three out in their latest dealings - as they attempt to jump out of the La Liga drop zone.

The player brought in is striker Adrian Colunga, who has joined on loan from Segunda Division Recreativo Huelva until the end of the season.

The 25-year-old becomes the Spanish strugglers' fourth signing of the January transfer window, following in the footsteps of Jiri Jarosik, Humberto Suazo and Eliseu.

In turn, Zaragoza's Brazilian striker Braulio has moved to Recre on a similar deal, while the club, who are currently rooted in the bottom two of the Spanish top flight, have also said their farewells to veteran defender Roberto Ayala.

The 36-year-old former Argentina international has reached an agreement to rescind his contract after joining Zaragoza in 2007 and playing 81 competitive games for the side.

In a further change, Zaragoza have also agreed to let Cameroon winger Franck Songo'o join Real Sociedad on loan for the remainder of the season.

Latics move for Ruben

Wigan are locked in talks with Villarreal over Argentine striker Marco Ruben, skysports.com understands.

Ruben has been with Villarreal since 2008 when they paid River Plate more than Ј5million for his services.

Upon his arrival he was loaned out to Recreativo where he scored seven times.

He returned to Villarreal in the summer, but was transferred to their B side - who are playing in the Segunda Liga.

And Ruben has done well in Spain's second tier and is one of the top-scorers with nine goals.

Now Roberto Martinez has set his sights on the 23-year-old, who has one international cap to his name.

Martinez flew to Spain earlier this week and held talks with Villarreal - who are not wanting to sell Ruben as they rate him highly.

They have rebuffed any notion of him going on loan to England, and Wigan are now hoping a permanent deal can be struck - although Villarreal want to recoup their Ј5million and more for the player.

Ruben himself is believed to know of Wigan's interest and is keen to move to England, which could help Martinez's quest to prise him away from El Madrigal.

Ibra 'relief' at Pep decision

Ibra relief at Pep decision

Barcelona striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has spoken of his relief after manager Pep Guardiola extended his contract with the club.

Guardiola's deal was due to expire at the end of the current season but he has agreed to stay at Camp Nou until the summer of 2011.

Speculation had mounted that the former Barca midfielder could walk away from the job at the end of the campaign, and Ibrahimovic admits all the players are relaxed now he has committed his future.

"All the players wanted him to continue, because he has done an excellent job," he said.

"We'll all be much more relaxed with this news.

"I couldn't believe a club like Barcelona could let a coach like Guardiola get away."

The 39-year-old tactician has guided the Catalans to six trophies since he took control of the team in June 2008.

Barca currently lie top of La Liga and are five points above rivals Real Madrid in the title race.

Atletico snap up Salvio

Atletico snap up Salvio

Atletico Madrid have completed the signing of Argentine youngster Eduardo Salvio from Lanus.

The striker has signed a five-and-a-half-year contract with the Spanish side and has already been unveiled in front of fans at the Vicente Calderon.

Negotiations have been going on for the past few weeks with Lanus admitting they had accepted an €8million bid at the start of January.

The 19-year-old has passed his medical and is now free to join up with fellow countryman Sergio Aguero.

Since making his debut for Lanus in August 2008 Salvio went on to make 41 league appearances for the club scoring 11 goals in the process.

Atletico were said to have been chasing the youngster for over a year with Fiorentina and Manchester United also thought to be interested in the starlet.

Salvio already has two caps for Argentina and he will be hoping the move can improve his chances of making Diego Maradona's Word Cup squad this summer.

Hamburg join Ruud race

Hamburg join Ruud race

Hamburg have joined the race to sign in-demand striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The Dutch star is currently on the fringes of the first-team at Real Madrid and he is looking to move, in order to seal his place in Holland's World Cup finals squad.

A host of Premier League clubs are bidding to land the former Manchester United star, with Tottenham, West Ham and Stoke all keen to secure his services.

Whilst the English continue talks, Hamburg have now joined the race and hope to land the 33-year-old marksman, amid speculation that the Dutchman does not want a move back to Britain.

"We have the desire to sign one more striker, but we are just going out to do so if such a deal makes sense," Hamburg chief Bruno Labbadia said.

"I am not a fan of winter deals, many of those players need too much time to settle. Though, it needs to be a player who does not take that long to feel home."

Current Real team-mate and former Hamburg player, Rafael van der Vaart insists van Nistelrooy is still world-class.

"It's a fact that Ruud still belongs to the very best strikers in the European game, there should not be any doubt about this," Van der Vaart told Bild .

"He is a world-class hit-man."

Barca to reward Pique

Barca to reward Pique

Barcelona are keen to secure the services of Gerard Pique on a new long-term contract.

So impressed have the Catalan giants been by the centre-half since he returned to his homeland from Manchester United in 2008 that they want to ensure he sees out his playing days at Camp Nou.

A deal which will run until the summer of 2015 is reported to have been readied by Barca officials, with the option for extensions to that agreement to be put in place when required.

Sporting director Txiki Begiristain has been charged with overseeing the drawing up of the contract and ensuring it is signed.

Barca are also looking to include a clause in the deal which will see Pique's buy-out valuation increased to €150million (Ј131m).

Pique, who was born and raised in Catalunya, has also insisted that he would be happy to prolong his association with the club.

The 22-year-old had recently been linked with a return to England with Manchester City, but Barca have made it clear that they are unwilling to sanction a sale and the Spain international has now expressed no desire to leave.

Juve pessimistic on Candreva

Juve pessimistic on Candreva

Juventus fear they will be unable to land top target Antonio Candreva during the January transfer window.

The Serie A giants have identified the Italy international as a useful acquisition, with the 22-year-old midfielder having shone for Livorno this term.

However, any deal to take him to Turin would be complex as his contract is jointly owned by Livorno and Udinese.

Therefore, any club hoping to sign the youngster would have to reach an agreement which satisfies both of his employers.

Juventus believe they would struggle to strike such an accord, with Udinese known to be keen to take Candreva back once his loan at Livorno reaches a conclusion.

"We could sign him, but we would want a deal which allows us to make the move permanent in the summer, said Juve's sporting director Alessio Secco.

Clause

"But Udinese want to insert a clause which will see Candreva join them on a permanent basis.

"I don't think Juventus will be able to reach an agreement with Udinese."

Real Madrid midfielder Fernando Gago is also believed to be on Juve's wish list, but once again they may be left empty-handed in their efforts to lure the Argentina international away from Santiago Bernabeu.

"The player is happy in Madrid, but is obviously honoured by a proposal like this," said Gago's agent Zoran Vekic in Tuttosport .

"However, Real do not want to sell Gago, as it's difficult to find 23-year-olds with this talent around."

Canales open to Prem move

Canales open to Prem move

Racing Santander midfielder Sergio Canales has left the door open for English clubs to come knocking for his services.

The 18-year-old has been in the headlines this week after attracting interest from Europe's elite following four goals in his last three outings, including a brace against Sevilla.

With his contract set to expire in the summer, Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal have all been alerted by his exploits and the Spanish playmaker is open to a move abroad.

"The English league along with the Spanish is the best in the world. Both attract me," Canales told The Independant .

Canales' father, who acts as his agent, is thought to be travelling to London next week to speak with clubs about a proposed switch, however, Santander insist a verbal agreement to stay is in place.

English clubs would face stiff competition from Barcelona and Real Madrid who are both monitoring his situation and may be more likely destinations for the teenager.

Primera Liga round-up

Primera Liga round-up

Barcelona stretched five points clear at the top of La Liga after destroying Sevilla as Real Madrid's title hopes suffered a setback after a 1-0 defeat at Athletic Bilbao.

Lionel Messi scored his 100th goal in Barcelona colours as the reigning champions romped to a 4-0 win over their cup conquerors Sevilla at Camp Nou.

Pep Guardiola's side had to wait until the second half to make the breakthrough when Julien Escude could only turn the ball into his own net after Gerard Pique had helped on Rafael Marquez's cross.

Barca doubled the lead on 70 minutes when Pedro collected a wonderfully incisive pass from Xaxi before lifting the ball over Sevilla keeper Andres Palop.

Messi reached a century of goals for the club on 85 minutes when scoring from Dani Alves and he grabbed his 101st in stoppage-time by rolling the ball past Palop,

Manuel Pellegrini's Real side met with a third league defeat of the season as Bilbao battled for a 1-0 win at San Mames.

Bilbao could have been in front inside the first minute when Carlos Gurpegui's shot came back off the post and Gaizka Toquero struck the rebound against the opposite upright.

But just two minutes later Bilbao were in front when Fernando Llorente was left unmarked six yards out to head a corner beyond Real keeper Iker Casillas.

Karim Benzema was given a chance in the Real line-up and he almost drew his side level before half-time when his shot came back off the inside of the post.

Bilbao had to play out the final moments with 10 men when Gurpegui was shown a second yellow card in the fifth minute of injury-time.

Osasuna leapfrogged Espanyol in the table as goals inside the opening 10 minutes secured a 2-0 home success.

Juanfran turned home a corner after just seven minutes and former Birmingham City striker Walter Pandiani headed home the second goal two minutes later.

The hosts were reduced to 10 men before half-time when Ruper was dismissed, but the numbers were evened up four minutes after the break when Espanyol's Facundo Roncaglia picked up a second yellow card.

Ronaldo unfazed by goal drought

Ronaldo unfazed by goal drought

Cristiano Ronaldo is unconcerned by his lack of goals this year and insists it will not be long before he is scoring regularly again.

The former Manchester United star got off to a flier after joining Real Madrid for a world-record Ј80million fee last summer, netting seven times in nine matches before picking up an ankle injury which sidelined him for two months in September.

On his return to the side he weighed in with a further four goals in five appearances, but has now gone three games without a strike since getting back from the winter break.

During that same period Madrid have picked up just four points from a possible nine and now trail Primera Liga leaders Barcelona by five points.

Ronaldo is taking things in his stride however and said: "I'm not worried about not having scored.

"These things will come naturally because I'm working the same as I always do.

"I'm not getting worked about it, I'm sure the goals are going to come."

Xavi backs Pep stay

Xavi backs Pep stay

Barcelona midfielder Xavi has backed coach Pep Guardiola to sign a contract extension with the club.

Guardiola has yet to commit to a new deal which would keep him at the Spanish and European champions beyond this season.

President Joan Laporta said on Monday that the Catalan giants were resigned to rivals trying to lure the 39-year-old away.

He added that Guardiola should decide by the beginning of April whether he planned to stay on and that he also wanted sporting director Txiki Begiristain to agree a new deal.

But Xavi believes the manager, who led Barca to an unprecedented six trophies in 2009, wants to stay on at the club.

Fundamental cog

The Spain international said: "I can't imagine a Barca without Guardiola.

"He is a fundamental cog in this machine and I think his contract renewal is imminent but it depends on him.

"I believe (Guardiola) wants to continue and that he is content here, that he feels important within the club.

"To me he looks like he is enjoying the work with the same enthusiasm as the first day.

"Pep is very intelligent and it's clear that he won't make a mistake as he always has the good of the club and of the players in mind.

"He is not an egoist."

Gorosito takes Xerez reins

Gorosito takes Xerez reins

Argentine coach Nestor Gorosito has been handed the task of trying to steer Xerez to Primera Liga safety.

The Spanish strugglers have been managerless since parting company with Jose Angel Ziganda.

He paid the price for a woeful first half to the season, which left Xerez with just seven points and seven goals from 17 games.

They added another point to that tally with a 0-0 draw at fellow strugglers Real Zaragoza, but remain nine adrift of safety.

Gorosito becomes the club's third manager in less than a year, with Esteban Vigo having walked away from his post over the summer shortly after guiding them to the Segunda Division title.

The 45-year-old's only prior experience of life in European football came during a three-year stint at Austrian outfit FC Swarovski Tirol during his playing days.

His entire managerial experience to date has come in his homeland, taking in spells at River Plate, Argentinos Juniors, San Lorenzo, Lanus and Rosario Central.

Gorosito took his first training session with his new squad on Tuesday and will face Osasuna in his opening fixture at Nuevo Chapin on Sunday.

Guti considers Real exit

Guti considers Real exit

Guti has paved the way for a possible exit from Real Madrid after declaring he would love to experience playing abroad.

The midfielder has endured a troubled relationship with some Real coaches he has played under down the years and current boss Manuel Pellegrini appears to be no exception.

Prior to the clash with Mallorca last week, where Guti came on for the final seven minutes, the 33-year-old hadn't played for the first-team since the embarrassing 4-0 Copa del Rey defeat to minnows Alcoron in October.

Following the defeat Guti and Pellegrini were said to have had fallen out but the playmaker, who is in his 14th season at the Bernabeu having risen through club's youth ranks, angrily stated to journalists last week that his absence was down to injury.

"I would like to end my contract at Real Madrid but it is also true that I would love to be able to play for another team," he said.

"To be able to enjoy another culture, to be able to enjoy another life, other team-mates, another league."

Preference

Guti's contract is set to expire at the end of the season with Premier League duo Tottenham and Bolton said to be monitoring the situation, but the veteran feels he would be better suited to Serie A with Inter Milan top of his wishlist.

"I would go there with open arms," he added. "It is a great club. I have great friends there, Samuel Eto'o and Wesley Sneijder.

"I think it's a team that can aspire to everything. The truth is that it is one of my best options, if it could be real.

"It is true that I've had a very nice time at Real Madrid, that Madrid is a city where I wanted to live all my life, and now I want to leave Madrid.

"It's like a contradiction, but I want to be able to get out of Madrid, to be able to be in another country, in another city and to be able to enjoy other things."

Copa del Rey round-up

Atletico Madrid staged a dramatic comeback to book their place in the quarter-finals of the King's Cup.

Real Mallorca were also victorious on Thursday to ensure that they remain in the hunt for major silverware in Spain.

Atletico Madrid survived the late dismissal of Paulo Assuncao to turn their fifth round tie against Recreativo Huelva on its head with a stunning 5-1 victory.

Trailing 3-0 from the first leg, the capital giants quickly got to work as Simao opened the scoring in the 21st minute and Sergio Aguero added a second three minutes later.

Tomas Ujfalusi added a third in the 39th minute and Aguero's second just after the hour mark had Atletico in front.

Carlos Carmona put the tie back in doubt with a 71st-minute reply and things got worse for Atletico when Assuncao got his second yellow card two minutes later.

But Simao's 84th-minute strike sent the Madrid club through.

Real Mallorca progressed into the last eight courtesy of a stoppage time goal that secured a 3-1 win over Rayo Vallecano.

The Primera Liga outfit secured their passage 4-3 on aggregate to leave second division Rayo Vallecano heartbroken at the death.

Rayo, 2-1 up from the first leg last week, extended their advantage with a breakaway effort from striker Piti on the stroke of halftime.

Mallorca, though, have won every home game this season and were in no mood to surrender such a fine record. Victor headed in at a corner in the 50th minute, and then fired in at the far post 10 minutes later to draw the tie level.

With extra-time looming Mallorca substitute Mario Suarez scored from close range to send his side through on what was an entertaining - if rainy night - at Ono Estadi.

Jarosik completes Zaragoza move

Jarosik completes Zaragoza move

La Liga strugglers Real Zaragoza have completed the signing of Jiri Jarosik.

The former Chelsea and Celtic midfielder was a free agent after leaving Russian side Krylya Sovetov Samara and becomes Zaragoza's third new signing of the January transfer window.

Jose Aurelio Gay's side had already drafted in Eliseu on loan from Lazio until the end of the season and Humberto Suazo also made his move from Mexican side Monterrey.

Jarosik, 32, brings a wealth of experience with him, having earned 23 caps for the Czech Republic and also won league titles in four countries with the Blues, Celtic, Sparta Prague and CSKA Moscow.

Zaragoza achieved promotion back to the Spanish top flight last summer but have found the going tough so far and currently sit 19th in the standings.

Jarosik could make his debut in the weekend clash against bottom club Xerez.

Puyol backs his boss

Puyol backs his boss

Carles Puyol has dismissed Pep Guardiola's statement that he let the Barcelona players down at Sevilla and revealed the Catalan team's renewed determination to win the Spanish title and UEFA Champions League.

The Blaugrana trainer said that he felt responsible for the away goal defeat by Sevilla in the Copa del Rey as he tried to take the pressure of his squad.

Club captain Puyol did not agree, however, and instead preferred to look at the positives after Barca saw the defence of the first trophy from their historic treble-winning season end.

"[Guardiola] didn't let us down at all. He prepared the game really well and we only just lost," the defender told a press conference on Thursday.

"I've always said that it's the players who win or lose games. We are very proud of the boss.

"We're not happy about being knocked out, but we have to use it to make us stronger. Now we have to fight even harder for the league and Champions League titles."

Barcelona won the game in midweek thanks to a goal from Xavi, but Sevilla's 2-1 win in Camp Nou last week meant that the Andalucian outfit sneaked through on aggregate.

"Nobody likes to be eliminated from a knock-out competition and it doesn't make me feel any better knowing we lost to a good team like Sevilla," Puyol added.

"Nobody can accuse us of anything about last night's game. We gave a good account of ourselves and we kept fighting till the end."

Toure could move to England

Toure could move to England

Yaya Toure has admitted that he hopes to taste life in the Premier League at some point in his career.

The combative midfielder is currently on the books of Catalan giants Barcelona, with whom he is contracted until 2012.

He extended his association with the reigning European champions last summer amid mounting speculation that he could be on his way to England.

Such a move never materialised, much to the dismay of Manchester City, but Toure has refused to rule out the possibility of making such a switch in the future.

His brother Kolo plies his trade at Eastlands, having previously turned out for Arsenal, and the 26-year-old has hinted that he could join him in the English top flight.

"It is true that I came close to joining Arsenal in the past," Toure told Eurosport .

Experience

"Before I signed for Olympiakos I underwent a two-month trial in London.

"It was a positive experience, but Arsene Wenger decided not to follow up his interest.

"I am very happy about how things have turned out, but I think that one day I will play in the Premier League."

City centre-half Kolo Toure admits he would be only too happy to be reunited with his brother at Eastlands, as he believes Yaya has all the attributes required to be a success in the Premier League.

"My brother is a brave footballer and is one of few people who can handle Didier Drogba," he said.

"That means he has the potential to be a real star for City."

Maxi makes Reds move

Maxi makes Reds move

Liverpool have completed the signing of Maxi Rodriguez from Atletico Madrid on a free transfer.

Atletico have allowed the Argentina international to leave for free as his contract with the Spanish side was due to expire in the summer.

Rodriguez has signed a three-and-a-half year deal at Anfield after agreeing personal terms and passing a medical on Merseyside.

The midfielder had fallen out of favour at Atletico and was keen on a move away in search of regular first-team football ahead of this summer's World Cup finals.

The 29-year-old will watch the Reds' FA Cup third-round replay against Reading on Wednesday and he could make his debut against Stoke this weekend.

Rodriguez is Rafa Benitez's first signing of this month's transfer window and he will help bolster his options following the sales of Andriy Voronin and Andrea Dossena.

Personality

Reds boss Benitez told the club's official website : "We were looking for players with character and a good mentality.

"He has played for Argentina and Atletico Madrid and is a player with personality.

"He can play in three positions - on the right, left or as a second striker - and is someone with a very positive mentality, which is what we are looking for.

"He is comfortable on the ball, can pass and keep possession. He is good at getting into the box and scoring goals and a good finisher. Every year he gets five to 15 goals from the right side of midfield.

"I know he was not doing as well as he did in the past at Atletico Madrid, but he is doing really well with Argentina and wants to impress for the World Cup."

Benitez hopes Rodriguez will settle quickly with the help of compatriot Javier Mascherano and former Atletico team-mate Fernando Torres.

Challenge

"He knows Mascherano and Torres and he can provide a lift for some players," said the Liverpool boss.

"I think he will adapt to English football because he is a clever player and takes up good positions on the pitch.

"It is a question of adjusting to the pace of the game and he will need some time, but with these players around it will be easier for him."

Benitez added: "Rodriguez will be a different kind of player for us and also competition for Dirk Kuyt on the right side, along with Nabil El Zhar and Yossi Benayoun.

"He will give us the opportunity to manage some of the other players and rest them if necessary to keep the level of the team.

"I have been talking with him and he is really pleased and ready to come here. I have told him what we are expecting from him and he is ready for the challenge."

Getafe swoop for Miku

Getafe swoop for Miku

Former Valencia midfielder Miku has not been without a club for long after being snapped up by Getafe.

The 24-year-old only left the Mestalla on Tuesday after being released and he has now joined the Madrid-based outfit.

Miku has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal, although reports speculate he could be immediately loaned out to Malaga.

The Venezuela international failed to break into Valencia's first team and spent much of his time away on loan.

Holders Barcelona crashed out of the Copa del Rey despite a 1-0 victory away to Sevilla in the second leg of their fifth round meeting.

Trailing 2-1 from the first leg at Camp Nou, Pep Guardiola's side levelled the tie on aggregate thanks to Xavi's 64th minute effort, but could not break down the hosts again and crashed out on the away goals rule.

Deportivo La Coruna hit back from 2-0 down at home to Valencia to secure a 4-3 aggregate success.

Nikola Zigic struck twice in the opening 28 minutes for the visitors to give them a narrow advantage after a 2-1 home defeat in the first leg.

But Luis Filipe responded in the 49th minute for Deportivo before Juan Rodriguez made sure of their progress to the quarter-finals.

Osasuna scraped past second division Hercules on the away goals rule after Massoud Shojaei scored a fine solo effort to secure a 1-0 victory on the night and a 2-2 aggregate scoreline.

Adventure over

Alcorcon's Copa del Rey adventure came to an end as they were edged out by Racing Santander following a 0-0 stalemate in the second leg.

The third-tier outfit, who saw off Real Madrid in the last round, exited the competition as a result of their 3-2 defeat in the first meeting.

Getafe secured their place in the last eight with a 6-3 aggregate success over Malaga following a stunning 5-1 second leg victory.

Trailing 2-1 from their first meeting, the home side overturned the deficit and moved ahead thanks to first-half goals from Roberto Soldado and Lopez Rafa.

And they completed a memorable victory with further goals after the break from Soldado and Leon, with Jiminez Juanmi's 63rd-minute response merely academic as Dani Parejo grabbed a fifth for the hosts.

Maxi takes taxi to Anfield

Argentina winger Maxi Rodriguez has arrived in Liverpool ahead of completing his proposed switch to Anfield.

The 29-year-old Atletico Madrid player is set to undergo a medical before signing an 18-month contract.

He will then watch his new team-mates in action in Wednesday night's FA Cup third round replay against Reading at Anfield before returning to Spain to tie up the final details of his departure.

Rodriguez, who is a close friend and international team-mate of Reds midfielder Javier Mascherano, still has to agree his pay-off from Atletico.

Hoped

But it is hoped he could be back in England by the weekend to figure in Liverpool's trip to Stoke on Saturday.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez had hoped the deal could have been completed last week, but the former Newell's Old Boys and Espanyol player was unable to finalise the details of his departure.

His impending arrival comes after Andrea Dossena left the Reds for Napoli, while Andriy Voronin moved to Dinamo Moscow.

These deals brought in funds totalling Ј6.5million, and Ryan Babel's name could soon be added to the list of departures now Benitez has been assured that he can have the potential Ј10million fee to strengthen his squad during this transfer window.

Benitez had previously been told to wait until the summer before spending on new additions.

Pulis coy on striker targets

Pulis coy on striker targets

Tony Pulis has refused to confirm or deny whether he is in the market for Kenwyne Jones and Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The Stoke City boss has admitted to being an admirer of both, but has stopped short of revealing whether or not they feature on his winter wish list.

The Potters have made no secret of their desire to bolster their attacking options during the January transfer window, with a host of top names linked with a switch to the Britannia Stadium.

Sunderland frontman Jones is reported to be Pulis' first choice, with Stoke chairman Peter Coates hinting that bid could be in the pipeline, but the experienced coach insists he has made no contact with Black Cats manager Steve Bruce.

"That situation is very disappointing because I've always tried to work manager to manager. I believe deals should be done that way," assessed Pulis of the gossip linking him to the Trinidad & Tobago star.

"As far as I'm concerned it's not gone to that stage. If I'm going to be doing anything I'll be speaking to Steve Bruce first.

"All this nonsense about what he's earning has absolutely nothing to do with anything.

Price tag

"It's a case of do we want him and do they want to sell him? Brucie has said he doesn't want to sell him, and who's saying we want him?

"But if Steve came back and said he wanted Ј20million for Kenwyne Jones, I'm not sure Peter would pay that."

Pulis has also sought to play down speculation regarding an imminent approach for Real Madrid striker Van Nistelrooy, with the Potters chief not convinced that the Dutchman would want to swap life in Spain for that in Stoke.

"I'd take Van Nistelrooy tomorrow if we could afford him or he wanted to come to Stoke," he said.

"But going from Real Madrid to Stoke City, I'm not so sure that's sexy enough for him, but we'll see.

"What we've done is we've made enquiries for four or five people."
