Alves seeks away goal

Alves seeks away goal

Dani Alves insists that Barcelona will be gunning for an away goal when they tackle Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League.

The European giants meet in the quarter-finals of the competition with the first leg being played at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium.

Barca come into the game on the back of four consecutive Primera Liga wins, although Arsenal are strong on home soil in Europe having won all five of their games to date.

The meeting between the teams is their first since Barcelona claimed the Champions League title with a 2-1 success over Arsenal in the 2006 final in Paris.

Alves admits the pressure will be on Barca to progress to the semi-finals of the competition and set up a possible meeting with Inter Milan or CSKA Moscow, although the expectations are nothing they cannot handle.

Pressure

"We're the favourites and there is extra pressure on us, but this is normal," he told skysports.com . "We might be champions, but we're not guaranteed to reach the semi-finals.

"The tie will be decided in Camp Nou, although we want to boost our chances of success in London.

"In Europe there are no easy games. However, if we play our normal game with our normal rhythm then we should get a positive result.

"Every match is different and La Liga is not the Champions League. Against Osasuna we struggled to break down their defensive system, but I'm convinced Arsenal play a different kind of football.

"If the English side fail in trying to control the ball then we'll score goals. I'm sure.

"Our aim is to score in London and to pressurise the Gunners. We're improving our form in La Liga and we need to take that form into the Champions League.

"I'm optimistic as always and for me Barcelona will be in the semi-finals of the Champions League."

Keita questions Real's rivals

Keita questions Reals rivals

Barcelona midfielder Seydou Keita believes too many teams in Spain give an easy ride to Real Madrid.

He claims a number of teams take their foot off the gas when facing the capital club, allowing them a stroll towards three points.

Keita was speaking in the wake of Real's 3-2 derby win over Atletico Madrid on Sunday, during which they scored three goals in 13 second half minutes.

That win helped to take Manuel Pellegrini's side back to the Primera Liga summit, on goal difference, and Keita has questioned the effort put in by many of Real's rivals over the course of the 2009/10 campaign.

"I didn't watch it (the derby) because I knew Real Madrid were going to win," said Keita.

"I don't know if opponents give 100 per cent against Madrid."

Opinion

He added: "It's only a personal opinion. Madrid players may also think the same about teams who play us because Barca always seem to win."

Keita has further strengthened his argument by reflecting on comments made by Getafe boss Michel ahead of their 4-2 defeat to Real last Thursday.

A former Santiago Bernabeu favourite, he caused consternation among the Barca camp by offering his support to his former employers in the Spanish title race.

"The Getafe coach said he would like to see Madrid win the title, and if you say this the day before you play, it's not normal," added Mali international Keita.

Primera Liga round-up

Primera Liga round-up

Barcelona continued their charge for the Primera Liga title with a hard-fought 1-0 win at UEFA Champions League hopefuls Mallorca.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic's second-half goal proved to be the difference as Barca moved back to the top of the table ahead of Real Madrid's derby with Atletico on Sunday.

Mallorca were unfortunate to lose and came close to scoring after just two minutes when Aritz Aduriz's thunderbolt smacked against the inside of the far post.

Barca keeper Victor Valdes, who had been beaten by that effort, then did well to scramble across his line to parry away Gonzalo Castro's follow-up shot.

The reigning champions had a goal disallowed in the 12th minute for a marginal offside against Pedro Rodriguez, while Gabriel Milito was denied by a superb flying save by Dudu Aouate eight minutes later.

Barca survived a second huge scare four minutes before the break when Mallorca hit the woodwork again. Borja Valero was the unlucky man on this occasion, hitting the post from a 25-yard free-kick.

The winner came on 63 minutes when Xavi's corner was stabbed goalwards by Carles Puyol and, after Aouate could only parry the ball, Ibrahimovic was on hand to slot home from close range.

Real Zaragoza boosted their survival hopes with a convincing 3-0 home win over 10-man Valencia.

Diogo's thunderous finish gave Zaragoza the lead four minutes before half-time before Nikola Zigic was dismissed for a second bookable offence just before the interval.

The hosts made the most of their numerical advantage as Javier Arismendi scored with a crisp volley on 63 minutes and Jiri Jarosik then stuck out a leg to divert a corner past Cesar on 71 minutes.

Tenerife picked up a point in their battle to avoid a swift return to the second tier after coming from behind to draw 1-1 at Malaga.

Pablo Sicilia crashed a powerful header against the crossbar for Tenerife, while Felipe Caicedo hit the post for Malaga.

The breakthrough came when Apono headed home Manolo Gaspars' cross from close range to give Juan Ramon Lopez Muniz's side the lead after 66 minutes.

Tenerife refused to give in and won a penalty five minutes from time, when Patrick Mtiliga brought down Nino, who had looked certain to score.

The Danish defender received his marching orders and Alejandro Alfaro made no mistake from the spot to give the visitors a share of the spoils.

Arbeloa passes on praise

Arbeloa passes on praise

Alvaro Arbeloa believes he was fortunate to score one of the crucial goals in Sunday's Madrid derby, with Xabi Alonso more deserving of the credit for his impressive assist.

The former Liverpool defender broke down the right to score Real Madrid's second goal against Atletico Madrid in a 3-2 victory to help put his side back on top of the table.

Despite making headlines for his goal, Arbeloa is keen to ensure that Alonso is given due credit for his long pass out to the wing which opened up the Atletico defence.

"I am still asking myself how I scored that goal," he said. "I think Xabi Alonso deserves all the credit because he produced a perfect pass.

"Of course, I was delighted to score but he showed that he was one of the best passers in the world.

"People were surprised because I do not score many goals, so the fans are not accustomed to seeing me doing that."

Energies

With Real and Barcelona again locked on the same points at the top of the table, attention has again turned to what promises to be an epic encounter at Santiago Bernabeu on 11th April.

However, Arbeloa insists the next fixture is always the most important and claims Manuel Pellegrini's troops remain fully focused on Sunday's trip to Racing Santander.

"We have to play against Santander first," he continued. "That is the game that we are now thinking about and that we are putting all our energies into. We will think about the Barcelona match later on.

"Of course games against teams like Barca bring incredible tension. I have played in the derby between Liverpool and Manchester United and in the Clasico here, so I know.

"This year the pressure will be even greater because things are so equal, so it will be really important. The expectation levels are rising."

Real return to top spot

Real return to top spot

Real Madrid claimed a 4-2 derby success over Getafe to move back to the top of the Primera Liga.

The convincing victory over their city rivals on Thursday edges them to the summit on goal difference.

It took just 13 minutes for Real to take the lead at Coliseum Alfonso Perez, with Cristiano Ronaldo firing in a trademark free-kick.

In-form Argentine frontman Gonzalo Higuain then doubled their advantage seven minutes later, firing low into the bottom corner.

The South American hot-shot took his tally for the season to 22 on 23 minutes, drilling home after latching onto a Fernando Gago through-ball.

Flying

Real were flying at this point and put the result beyond doubt when Ronaldo grabbed his second of the night on 37 minutes.

Daniel Parejo, once of Real, pulled one back for the home side inside 60 seconds, with Iker Casillas left uncharacteristically stranded outside his area.

Real were happy to take their foot off the gas after the interval, as they cruised to victory, and allowed Getafe to grab a second when Pedro Leon pounced on a loose ball to finish from close range.

It was a forgettable night for the hosts, though, and their misery was compounded in stoppage time when coach Michel, a former Real favourite, was ordered from the bench for protesting a decision.

Pep promises attacking intent

Pep promises attacking intent

Pep Guardiola insists Barcelona will not ditch their attacking ideals when they face Arsenal.

The Catalan giants are set to tackle the Gunners at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final.

Both sides are renowned for their free-flowing football, helping to win them an army of admirers across the globe.

It is hoped they will provide a fitting spectacle when they meet in continental competition, with fans expecting fireworks.

Guardiola is keen to give them what they want, with the Spaniard admitting that he will not be looking to rein in his match-winners over the course of the two-legged tie.

"Since I took the job our play has been marked by brave, attacking football," he said.

Bold

"Sometimes we've been bold and, occasionally, I think we've played audaciously.

"It's a philosophy of football. Win or lose I want us to show who we are and what kind of football we believe in. I want my team to go out and be themselves.

"Those of us lucky enough to work at this level in our profession must never forget that it's only a sport.

"We live in a world where everything is spiralling in cost and many people need to make a big sacrifice in order to go and watch a game of football.

"So for me it all makes sense, the effort, the work, the planning, the concentration and the discipline, if you do it for the people.

"The manner in which we play is a demonstration of the respect we have for the people who pay for a ticket or pay money to watch matches on television."

Bilbao boost Euro bid

Bilbao boost Euro bid

Athletic Bilbao boosted their hopes of UEFA Champions League football with a 4-3 victory over struggling Racing Santander.

Bilbao halted a three-game winless run with Monday night's incident-packed success and are now only two points adrift of fourth-placed Real Mallorca in the Primera Liga table.

The home side forged ahead in the 13th minute when Fernando Llorente headed home after being found in the area by Igor Gabilondo's cross.

And the San Mames faithful had even more reason to celebrate just five minutes later when Llorente turned provider for Gaizka Toquero to tap home.

Racing responded and pulled a goal back before the break when Mohammed Tchite found the net following Gonzalo Colsa's through ball.

Dashed

The hosts looked to have made sure of the points 11 minutes from time when Llorente picked himself up to fire home from the penalty spot after being felled by Christian Fernandez.

Racing refused to lie down and halved the deficit almost immediately as Ivan Bolado put the finishing touch to Mehdi Lacen's cross.

But their hopes of a dramatic comeback were dashed when defender Oriol saw red after two bookings in three minutes, with Markel Susaeta adding a fourth two minutes from time after being set up by Andoni Iraola.

There was still time for substitute Bolado to bag his second of night in a frantic finale before the final whistle went on a seven-goal thriller.

The visitors saw their four-game unbeaten run come to and end and they remain just six points above the relegation zone with nine games of the season remaining.

Messi plays down comparisons

Messi plays down comparisons

Lionel Messi claims those comparing him to Diego Maradona are undermining the greatest player of all time.

The Barcelona forward has been in electrifying form this season, leading some to suggest that he has already eclipsed the standard set by his fellow Argentine.

Messi, though, has been quick to dampen such talk, insisting he is yet to justify such high praise.

He believes his international coach, Maradona, will never be matched and feels anyone who believes otherwise is kidding themselves.

"I am thankful to everyone that says positive things about me but I can't accept any comparison with Maradona," Messi told Perros de la Calle .

History

"Even if I play for a million years I will never be near to what Maradona was as a footballer, and I don't want to be near.

"He is the best player of all time. I don't compare myself with Maradona, I want to make my own history and do something important with my own career."

Messi has also sought to answer those critics who continue to question why he is unable to perform at the same level for his country as he does for Barcelona.

"The answer is that it is very different playing for Barcelona as it is for the national team," he said.

"That doesn't mean that the players in the national team aren't good players, they are of great quality, but we don't have enough time working together.

"Everything happens so fast, we have two days together and then we have to play. When we have more time working together, things could change."

Dream

That could be at this summer's World Cup, with Messi of the opinion that Argentina can bounce back from a faltering qualification campaign to land the global crown.

"We all dream of winning the World Cup," added Messi.

"I imagine it would be the greatest thing in a footballer's career.

"It is better that we head to the competition as an outsider because we can surprise people."

Season over for Marquez

Season over for Marquez

Espanyol have confirmed that Javi Marquez will miss the remainder of the season after breaking his leg.

The midfielder suffered the knock during a 2-0 victory over Sevilla on 20th March.

An unfortunate collision with team-mate Ivan Alonso saw Marquez come off worse.

The club's medical staff have since confirmed that the 23-year-old has fractured his fibula and will play no further part in the 2009/10 campaign.

The news comes as a major blow to Marquez, as he had been able to force his way into the first-team fold on a regular basis this term.

His absence will also be keenly felt by coach Mauricio Pochettino, who must now do without the services of one of his most creative talents.

Early indications suggest Marquez will be laid low for at least two months, but will be raring to go by the time pre-season training resumes in late summer.

Fabregas - I'm not leaving

Fabregas - Im not leaving

Cesc Fabregas has reiterated he has no plans to leave Arsenal ahead of the UEFA Champions League meeting with his former club Barcelona.

The Gunners captain was part of the Barcelona youth system before being brought to England by Arsene Wenger during his mid-teens.

He has subsequently established himself as one of football's most influential midfielders and, as a result, has regularly been linked with a return to his old club.

Real Madrid are also admirers of the 22-year-old, but Fabregas has stressed that he has no intention of seeking a move back to Spain.

"We don't need to talk about my future," Fabregas told the Daily Star Sunday . "I don't understand all the rumours about me.

"I've always said that I'm happy at Arsenal. I can say a thousand times that I won't go to a Spanish club, but nobody believes me.

"Arsenal is my home and I don't have any plans to leave."

Exciting games

Meanwhile, Fabregas is relishing the Champions League quarter-final dates against Barca, with the holders due to visit Emirates Stadium for the first leg on Wednesday.

"I know they will be two exciting games," added Fabregas, who is battling to overcome a knee injury picked up in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Birmingham City.

"We will, of course, give everything, and you know if you want to win the competition, you have to be ready to play anyone.

"The last round of the Champions League was interesting and it shows you can never underestimate any opponents in this competition.

"It should be a warning that any team left in can beat anyone else - even if the reputation is lower maybe than Real Madrid, Chelsea or Liverpool, they can still win."

Deportivo were dealt a blow in their chase for European football as top-half rivals Getafe won 3-1 at the Riazor, while Osasuna, Villarreal, Xerez also picked up victories.

Depor drop to seventh in the Primera Division and Athletic Bilbao can move three points clear with victory over Racing Santander on Monday.

Two goals from Miku on 21 and 57 minutes helped Getafe, now two points off the top six, get over their derby defeat to Real Madrid in midweek.

Depor did not help themselves as Ze Castro scored an own goal in the opening period and Riki's strike on 71 minutes proved to be just a consolation.

Miguel Angel Lotina's side have only collected one point from the last 12 and need to improve their form quickly with Getafe now trailing them by only two points.

Sevilla slipped up in their hunt for Champions League football as they went down 3-0 at Villarreal.

The Yellow Submarine moved up with the comprehensive victory thanks to goals from Giuseppe Rossi, Joseba Llorente and Robert Pires.

It was Antonio Alvarez's first game in charge of Sevilla, but they stay fifth after the defeat - two points behind Real Mallorca.

Great escape

Xerez have not given up hope of avoiding relegation this season after defeating Valladolid 3-0 at home to make it 10 points from the last 15.

Victor Sanchez, on loan from Barcelona, scored in the opening minute to put Xerez ahead and further goals from Michel Gonzalez and Mario Bermejo sealed a fine win which keeps their hopes a great escape alive.

Xerez stay bottom of the table but their recent revival has seen them move seven points away from safety, while Valladolid are second from bottom.

Osasuna moved to within two points of Almeria after they beat them 1-0 at Reyno de Navarra.

Walter Pandiani's 20th-minute header ensured the win to end Osasuna's seven-match winless streak as Juan Manuel Ortiz was sent off for two yellow cards after the break.

Both sides remain in the bottom half of the table although they are comfortably clear of the drop zone.

Meanwhile, Espanyol and Sporting Gijon played out a goalless stalemate at Estadi Cornella-El Prat.

Neither side could break the deadlock and they both remain in the bottom-half of the table.

Aragones shuns Sevilla

Aragones shuns Sevilla

Former Spain coach Luis Aragones has turned down an offer to take charge of Primera Liga side Sevilla.

The Andalusian outfit are in the market for a new manager after parting company with Manolo Jimenez on Tuesday following a disappointing run of results.

Aragones was identified as an ideal candidate and club chairman Jose Maria del Nido met with the experienced coach on Wednesday in an effort to thrash out a deal.

However, no agreement could be reached and first-team coach Antonio Alvarez will now take charge for Saturday's match at Villarreal.

"The latest offer we made was rejected and it's difficult to see an agreement being reached," said club spokesman Jesus Gomez.

Aragones, who led Spain to European Championship glory in 2008, has been out of work since leaving Turkish outfit Fenerbahce last summer.

Sevilla were keen to get him on board after recently crashing out of the UEFA Champions League and slipping out of the top four in the Spanish top-flight.

Alvarez takes Sevilla reins

Alvarez takes Sevilla reins

Sevilla have confirmed assistant coach Antonio Alvarez will take charge of the first team until the end of the season.

Alvarez takes over from Manolo Jimenez who was sacked following Tuesday's 1-1 draw against basement boys Xerez.

It stretched Sevilla's winless run to seven games and put them two points adrift of fourth-placed Real Mallorca in the race to clinch a place in next season's UEFA Champions League.

Sevilla turned to Alvarez after former Spain coach Luis Aragones rejected the offer to succeed Jimenez.

It is Alvarez's first position as first-team coach, having served as Jimenez's assistant for the previous two years.

A club statement read: "Antonio Alvarez, who is part the coaching staff at Sevilla and who yesterday took the first team in training, has been appointed by the club as head coach of the team from now until the end of the current season.

"Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido announced this to the team before this Friday's training session.

"The new Sevilla coach will give a press conference at the end of today's training session, at which the Sevilla president himself along with sporting director Monchi will be present."

Casillas plays down incident

Casillas plays down incident

Real Madrid's Iker Casillas accepts that Daniel Parejo did nothing wrong in a clash that led to Getafe's first goal on Thursday night.

Madrid took a comfortable 4-2 win from the contest but Parejo's strike caused a flashpoint as he dispossessed the Spain international outside the area before slotting into the net.

Casillas was left prone on the ground clutching his ankle and angrily rejected Parejo when he came over the check on the goalkeeper.

Coach Manuel Pellegrini labelled former Real prospect Parejo "disloyal" for not putting the ball into touch when he saw the injury.

But Casillas has now brushed off the spat, admitting he overreacted and stating that the 20-year-old striker was blameless.

"When you dedicate yourself to this sport there are some heated moments and yesterday was one of them," he said.

"I have nothing to complain about with regard to Parejo. He did what he had to do and he wasn't at fault at all.

"He took the ball off me cleanly and the rules are clear. A player doesn't have to kick the ball out if the referee is right there on the spot."

Alvarez hopes for impact

Alvarez hopes for impact

New Sevilla interim manager Antonio Alvarez hopes to lift the team for the end-of-season run-in.

Alvarez was appointed until the end of the campaign after Manolo Jimenez's departure on Tuesday night.

Sevilla are not certain of a place in the Primera Division's top four and a spot in next year's UEFA Champions League.

But Alvarez, who was Jimenez's assistant for two years, says he will try to improve the mood in the camp to pick up results.

On his plans for the new regime, he said: "Working day to day, encouraging the team and convincing them that we are going to achieve our targets.

"It is a question of mindset, it is necessary to lift the team, after recent results and the elimination from the Champions League, which was a huge blow, the problem is physiological. I see myself as capable of being in the dressing room.

"(They have) a lot of desire to work, a lot of will and want to take the team forward. I have felt very comfortable and welcomed in the dressing room.

"Ten matches remain, 10 finals and there is time to turn our luck around, to play attacking football. This is to say to gamble on attacking football which, of course, means running the risks implicated with this type of football, but I have nothing but trust for the team I have."

Big job

Sevilla initially tried to get Luis Aragones as their new manager, but negotiations with Spain's Euro 2008-wining coach broke down.

And Alvarez admits he is relishing the challenge and the pressure that the Sevilla job brings.

"It is a dream," he added. "As a player I have played here and after this I spent many years working as the second in command and the last two as the technical secretary and finally the day I have been waiting for has happened.

"I have a lot of excitement, ambition and confidence to take things forward. The targets we have are still in our hands. It was my biggest wish and now it is a reality.

"I have worked happily in other departments and I have learnt new things. It has helped me and now the moment is right. (Even) if the decision was different, this moment would have arrived eventually."

Sevilla join Govou chase

Sevilla join Govou chase

Sidney Govou's agent has revealed that Sevilla are one of several clubs tracking the Lyon striker.

Govou stunned Lyon earlier this month by declaring his intention to leave the club at the end of the season when his contract expires.

A number of clubs have been linked with the France international and Sevilla are reported to be leading the chase.

Govou's agent Frederic Guerra insists there are a number of options open to his client as interest continues to build.

"Sevilla is one of the teams interested in Govou, but there is absolutely no definitive agreement," Guerra told calciomercato.it .

"His contract is expiring and many clubs are following him, so all options remain standing."

Italy interest

Guerra claims Italy is another possible destination for 30-year-old Govou, who has spent his entire career with Lyon.

He said: "Fiorentina, Genoa or Roma? The name of Sidney is on the note book of some good teams in Serie A.

"But at the moment these are not official contacts."

Rodriguez reveals Real dream

James Rodriguez has admitted he would relish the opportunity to join European heavyweights Real Madrid.

The 18-year-old winger currently plies his trade in Argentina with Banfield, but is not expected to remain in South America for long.

The Colombian is already making waves across Europe, with his potential quickly recognised by the giants of the game.

Juventus are reported to already be in advanced negotiations regarding a deal to take him to Italy.

However, the Serie A outfit may face considerable competition for his signature, with a number of other clubs waiting to pounce.

Progress

Rodriguez is flattered to be at the centre of such attention, and admits he is hoping to move to Europe in the future, but insists he would have no qualms in continuing his development at Banfield having only been a first-team regular for a little over a year.

"I'd love to play in Europe," he told El Espectador .

"If I could choose, I would like to play for Real Madrid or Barcelona. My idol is Cristiano Ronaldo, so it would be a dream to play with him.

"However, I have to go step by step, knowing that things will progress little by little.

"When I arrived in Argentina I had to train hard to be in the first division, then to earn a place among the matchday squad and now to have a starting spot."

Sevilla were held to a 1-1 draw by Xerez, while Sporting Gijon overcame nine-man Deportivo La Coruna 2-1.

Sevilla missed the chance to go fourth in La Liga after being held to a dramatic 1-1 draw by basement boys Xerez.

After a goalless first half former Tottenham and West Ham striker Fredi Kanoute broke the deadlock on 63 minutes when he converted from the penalty spot.

That looked like being enough for Sevilla until Leandro Gioda popped up with an equaliser in the closing seconds for Xerez.

Diego Castro's last-gasp penalty earned Sporting Gijon a 2-1 win over nine-man Deportivo La Coruna.

Deportivo were facing an uphill battle from the 10th minute when goalkeeper Daniel Aranzubia was sent off for a professional foul on Mate Bilic.

Bilic broke the deadlock on the half hour when he scored from close range after being set up by Miguel Angel de las Cuevas.

Adrian Lopez drew Deportivo level on 65 minutes when he latched onto a long ball upfield to fire past Juan Pablo Colinas.

Deportivo were reduced to nine men in injury-time when Alberto Lopo was sent off for bringing down Enrique Mateo in the box and Castro kept his cool from the spot to give Sporting all three points.

Fabregas focused on present

Cesc Fabregas' agent has reiterated that his client is only concerning himself with matters at Arsenal.

Speculation surroundings the midfielder's future refuses to go away, despite numerous denials from all concerned.

A return to his Spanish roots has been touted for some time, with Barcelona and Real Madrid reported to be interested.

A switch to Italy has now been mentioned, with Serie A champions Inter Milan said to be keen.

Fabregas has admitted that he would like to test himself away from Emirates Stadium at some stage, but has done nothing to suggest that will be any time soon.

Proposals

Therefore, his representative has once again moved to quash rumours regarding the 22-year-old and a possible summer switch.

"We don't care about the future at the moment, all we are thinking about is doing well in the Champions League and winning the Premier League," Joseba Diaz told fcinter1908.it .

"Italy? It is certainly a fascinating idea, like Spain is, but Cesc is happy in England.

"Have we received proposals from Italy? Yes, but not only from there."

Ribery would prefer Spain

Ribery would prefer Spain

Any hopes English clubs had of signing Franck Ribery may have been dashed after the Bayern Munich star reaffirmed that he would prefer a move to Spain.

The 26-year-old has been consistently hitting the headlines as his future is uncertain due to the fact that his contract expires in the summer of 2011.

Bayern want to keep Ribery, but he has yet to commit and the German giants may therefore sell at the end of this season rather than allowing him to leave for nothing 12 months later.

Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United have been linked with the France international, but Real Madrid and Barcelona would appear to have an edge.

"It is still a very difficult decision which I have to make - my future and my career are at stake," Ribery, who has said in the past that he is attracted by Real, told Bild .

No decision

"But no decision has been made yet. I am the one poring over things the most at the moment. I would have to lie if I said that there is no tendency.

"Although Chelsea is obviously a big club, if I were to decide against Bayern, then I would certainly go to Spain."

Ribery's decision will not be based purely on finances, although he has reportedly demanded a five-year contract to give him economic security, but will also factor in his desire to play with some of the world's top players.

"I have got to consider many factors," he added. "Money is not the only issue. The difference between the clubs is no longer so big.

"The decision will therefore not be made with my bank account, but in my head. It has to be not only good for me, but also for my wife (Wahiba) and children.

Respect and love

"Wahiba is certainly a southern woman and she needs the sun. I am also only human and when you get an offer from such a club (as Real Madrid), then it is only right that I am allowed to consider it. The best players in the world play there."

There is, however, still a chance of him extending his stay with Bayern, as long as they can also offer him the security he demands.

"I am not saying that we cannot feel happy in Munich," he said. "Bayern is a great club who want to offer me the best conditions ever. I feel a lot of respect and love here."

Meanwhile, Arjen Robben has denied reports he advised his Bayern team-mate to choose Barcelona over Madrid if he decides to leave the German giants.

The Dutchman, who spent two seasons at Madrid prior to his move to Bayern last summer, told Radio Marca : "I never said that. He has the quality to play for both teams, but what I prefer is for him to stay at Munich. Hopefully he will continue with us. I love playing alongside him."

Soldado suffers injury setback

Getafe have been rocked by the news that Roberto Soldado will be sidelined for at least two months.

The striker picked up a knee injury during the 3-0 victory over Real Mallorca on 13th March.

Medical tests have now revealed that the 24-year-old is facing a lengthy period of rehabilitation before returning to action.

Soldado has travelled to Barcelona for treatment and it is hoped that he will be back in contention before the end of the season.

The former Real Madrid ace is Getafe's top scorer this season with 12 goals in the Primera Liga.

The capital club are pushing hard for European qualification, sitting eighth in the table, but must now cope without the services of their leading marksman.

Emana wanted by Villarreal

Emana wanted by Villarreal

Real Betis midfielder Achille Emana is reported to be attracting interest from Villarreal.

The Cameroon international, who slipped into the second tier with Betis last season, has been the subject of transfer speculation throughout the 2009/10 campaign.

A host of Premier League clubs were reported to be tracking him last summer, with interest reignited during the winter window.

However, a move failed to materialise and Emana remained in Andalusia.

Ability

The African ace may finally get his switch this summer, though, with Villarreal and German giants Werder Bremen leading the hunt for his signature.

"I am prepared to move away from this club if they agree to sell me," Emana told skysports.com .

"I love the club but I miss top division football.

"I will go to the World Cup and show that I have lost none of my ability. By June we will all know where I will be playing next season."

Sergio Asenjo will decide his future at the end of the season but his agent concedes he is honoured to be linked with the likes of Chelsea and AC Milan.

Asenjo, who is rated as one of the best young goalkeepers in Europe, was snapped up by Atletico Madrid from Real Valladolid last summer.

The 20-year-old has impressed hugely for the Rojiblancos and now both Chelsea and Milan are said to be keen on landing him.

"The interest of top clubs like AC Milan and Chelsea is an honour," his agent Zoran Vekic told Calciomercato .

"In football anything is possible, but until the end of the season we will not take any decision.

"Atletico Madrid has made a major investment in him and together at the end of the season we'll evaluate the situation."

Vekic revealed that both Manchester United and Barcelona were tracking his charge before he moved to Atletico.

"We know that the Rossoneri have followed him but last year there were also Barcelona and Manchester United and there was also a deal with Fiorentina," he said.

Messi thanks team-mates

Messi thanks team-mates

Barcelona hat-trick hero Lionel Messi has praised his team-mates following his match-winning performance against Real Zaragoza.

The diminutive Argentine bagged three goals in a 4-2 victory against relegation-threatened Zaragoza, keeping the Catalans level on points with rivals Real Madrid at the top of La Liga.

Messi has now scored 25 goals in the Primera Division this season and 11 in the last five games in all competitions, and his spectacular hat-trick has been met with high praise.

But the 22-year-old insists that his Barca team-mates are the ones who deserve the credit following the win.

"The real merit of my goals goes to my team-mates," he said. "It is true that I score goals but without the help of my team-mates it would be impossible.

"The match in Zaragoza was difficult from the first minute."

Messi's second goal has in particular received many plaudits, but he would not be drawn on whether it is the best of his career to date, although he believes his side can now push on and win the title.

He added: "I do not say if the second goal is the best of my whole career. That is a question for the press and the people.

"I always try and do spectacular things and am happy to do so.

"I believe that it is possible to win La Liga although Real Madrid are putting pressure on with their scores."

Manager praise

Manager Pep Guardiola was delighted following the Zaragoza triumph but admits he cannot find enough words to describe Messi.

"Put in the superlatives yourselves, I'm running out," he said. "It's already been a while now that he has been outstanding.

"He's more than decisive in every way.

"That he's capable of doing everything that he does at his age is something impressive, that doesn't make any sense.

"He always wants to play, whether it's the Champions League final or against a third-division side.

"For me it's difficult to leave him out, seeing the form he's in.

"He's an amateur in this sense, he always wants to play.

"Obviously his game has a great impact on our team. The day he's not there we will respond, knowing that with him we are better. There are others who will take on the responsibility that he is doing."

Guardiola - Title is priority

Guardiola - Title is priority

Pep Guardiola insists he would rather win the Primera Liga title than the UEFA Champions League.

Barcelona remain on course to claim both crowns this term, sitting well placed in the league and safely through to the last eight in Europe.

The Catalan giants took both trophies last season, as part of an historic Treble, and are keen to ensure that both remain at Camp Nou.

However, with Real Madrid currently leading the way in the league, Guardiola admits seeing off the challenge of Barca's arch-rivals remains his top priority this year.

"The main target this season is not to win the Champions League, but to retain the Liga title," he said.

"I never discount anything but it is clear that if we do not do well in domestic competition, we will not achieve much in Europe.

"The Liga is our main objective because I have demanded the maximum from my players in every match.

"If we are not able to maintain these levels throughout the season things will get complicated."

Peaking

While Guardiola believes his side are close to the form they displayed during a memorable 2009, midfield anchorman Yaya Toure believes his own personal level is approaching that standard once more.

"I did not get into my rhythm early on, I was in and out of the team," the Ivorian told skysports.com .

"But I love being here, playing for the best team in the world.

"I am peaking now and hopefully I will finish the season with many trophies, like last season, and go to the World Cup in good form."

He added: "The Champions League? We have a great game with Arsenal to look forward to. It will be a fantastic game between two footballing teams."

Navas facing four weeks out

Sevilla winger Jesus Navas has been ruled out for three to four weeks after twisting his right ankle.

The Spain international sustained the knock during the first half of Saturday's 2-0 defeat to Espanyol.

Fellow playmaker Diego Capel picked up a problem in the same game and he is likely to be sidelined for 10 to 12 days with a muscle complaint.

Sevilla have also revealed that defender Sergio Sanchez is to undergo heart surgery in Germany in a bid to save his professional career.

The 23-year-old was ordered to stop playing by medics in January after being diagnosed with a heart condition.

"The doctor has explained the risks involved with this type of operation, because it is a complicated procedure, but he made it clear they are little when compared with the possible benefits," Sanchez told the club's official website .

"There is a good chance that I could continue my professional career if everything goes as we hope."

No excuses

Meanwhile, Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido has given coach Manolo Jimenez a vote of confidence in the wake of disappointing results.

The weekend setback at Espanyol allowed Real Mallorca to climb above them into fourth place in the table, with a four-match winless run putting a serious dent in their hopes of securing UEFA Champions League qualification.

"Anyone that has been in football for a long time knows that the fans demonstrate," said Del Nido after watching supporters express their disgust at recent displays.

"But the directors have to have the sense to not discuss this, not because this is the easiest thing to do but because it is in the best interests of the club."

He added: "The excuses about key players not being available no longer stands. Almost the entire squad is now available to the coaches.

"There are around two months of the season remaining and we have to be ready and we will see and try to work towards everyone continuing along the same lines to be successful again."

English sides including Liverpool and Arsenal are believed to be among those expressing an interest, with managers beginning to piece together their summer spending plans.

Lotina extends Depor deal

Miguel Angel Lotina has signed a one-year contract extension at Deportivo la Coruna.

His current deal was set to expire at the end of the season, but he will now remain in the hot-seat for a further 12 months.

Talks between Lotina and club president Augusto Cesar Lendoiro had been ongoing since before Christmas, with the finishing touches finally put to the deal this week.

Lotina took charge at the Riazor in 2007, replacing Joaquin Caparros.

He is currently on target to lead Depor to their highest league finish since 2003/04, when they finished third.

By remaining at the helm for another year he becomes just the third Depor coach in the last 80 years to last three seasons in the job.

"It is possible to work here without excessive pressure and I am calm," said Lotina.

Sevilla missed the chance to close on third-placed Valencia after being held by Depor while Getafe rolled over Mallorca.

Sevilla set the tone early on and it seemed just a matter of time before the Estadio Ramon Sanchez side forged ahead against Depor.

That goal arrived on 21 minutes when Federico Fazio headed home from Diego Perotti's pin-point free-kick.

However, no sooner had they moved in front had Depor struck back. Within minutes they were level courtesy of Adrian.

Despite Sevilla's best attempts to regain the lead they failed to find the back of the net and remain fourth in the Liga table.

Real Mallorca's European hopes suffered a blow after going down 3-0 to out-of-sorts Getafe.

Daniel Parejo headed home the opener in the 32nd minute, substitute Miku made it 2-0 10 minutes from time before his fellow replacement Manu Del Moral wrapped up the scoring soon after from the penalty spot.

In that same incident Mallorca captain Jose Carlos Nunes was sent off after handling the ball on the line.

The result leaves the Balearic Island outfit with just two wins and eight defeats from their 14 away games this season, and that is badly hampering their chances of claiming an unexpected top-four finish.

Spain's second match of the day saw Sporting Gijon and Athletic Bilbao play out a goalless draw.

In a tightly contested game at Gijon's El Molinon Stadium, for Bilbao, Gaizka Toquero was a constant threat, setting up a Markel Susaeta strike that went just wide before heading a cross wide himself in the 55th.

Real Madrid reclaimed top spot in the Primera Liga from Barcelona as they won at Real Valladolid on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola's Barcelona had briefly returned to the summit after a win over Valencia, but Real edged back in front on goal difference later in the evening.

Relegation rivals Racing Santander and Real Zaragoza drew, Tenerife boosted their hopes of survival against Espanyol, Villarreal defeated bottom club Xerez and Almeria overcame Malaga.

Real Madrid were under pressure, having seen Barcelona win and with their midweek UEFA Champions League exit to Lyon still fresh in the memory, but a Gonzalo Higuain hat-trick helped them to a 4-1 victory at relegation-threatened Real Valladolid.

Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring in the 28th minute of a feisty first half as his deflected free-kick nestled in the back of the net, before Higuain added a second on the stroke of the interval.

Ronaldo limped off at the break after sustaining a cut to his leg following a stamp from Valladolid substitute defender Nivaldo, but the Portuguese maestro returned for the second half.

Seven minutes after the break Higuain doubled his personal tally for the match, but Valladolid pulled a goal back in the 58th minute when Raul Albiol was unfortunate to deflect into his own net.

Higuain, though, ended any hopes of a comeback as he applied a simple finish to a Ronaldo cross for his third of the night.

Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick as Barcelona beat Valencia 3-0 for Guardiola's men to briefly return to the top of the table prior to Real's win.

Messi controlled a pass from Xavi Hernandez on the edge of the area and dribbled past three men before firing in a left-footed shot in the 56th minute.

The Argentina forward struck again in the 81st when he controlled a long pass on the right, cut inside and shot past Cesar Sanchez. Messi's 22nd league goal of the season came two minutes later when he ran onto Thierry Henry's pass to tap the ball in.

Valencia's Hedwiges Maduro was sent off 20 minutes from the end for his second yellow card after a challenge on Messi.

Racing Santander's search for a first home league win since early January continues after they were held to a goalless draw by relegation rivals Real Zaragoza at El Sardinero.

Goalkeeper Fabio Coltorti was the hero for the hosts as he made a string of excellent saves to deny a Zaragoza side that created the better clear-cut chances of a scrappy encounter.

Tenerife boosted their hopes of survival with a vital 4-1 win against Espanyol as the Catalans' miserable away form continued.

Richi gave the Canary Islanders the lead after 20 minutes and Nino doubled the home side's lead early in the second half.

Espanyol got back into the game through Joan Verdu 20 minutes from time, but Alejandro Alfaro and Nino later rounded off a deserved victory for Jose Luis Oltra's men in the closing stages.

Villarreal moved to within six points of the Europa League spots after easing to a 2-0 win against bottom club Xerez, who slipper closer to the relegation trap-door after seeing their recent mini-revival come to an end.

Villarreal, runners-up in La Liga in 2008 and Champions League quarter-finalists last year, have badly under-achieved this season but they could yet salvage a European berth after trimming the difference to the top six by two points thanks to goals from Joseba Llorente and Damian Escudero.

Midfielder Fernando Soriano continued his recent run of goalscoring form by firing Almeria to a 1-0 victory over local rivals Malaga at the Estadio de los Juegos Mediterraneos.

Having only netted twice in his first 19 league appearances this season and rarely been a regular scorer throughout his career, Soriano has now struck three times in five games and his 56th-minute effort helped Almeria take another step towards Primera Division survival.

Bilbao remain in seventh spot in the table while Gijon have climbed into the top half of the standings.

Lotina extends Depor deal

"Now the challenge is to obtain a European place, while fighting for a Champions League spot if possible."

Barcelona v Stuttgart preview

Barcelona v Stuttgart preview

European champions Barcelona host Stuttgart at Camp Nou aware that a goalless draw would be enough to book a quarter-final place.

A 1-1 stalemate in the first leg in Germany has set up the tie intriguingly, with Stuttgart unbeaten on the road in this season's competition, although they have never previously won in Spain.

The continent's most stylish side are unlikely to sit back though as coach Pep Guardiola has always encouraged Barcelona's natural attacking inclination.

And when you have Lionel Messi in the type of form that saw him grab a virtuoso hat-trick at the weekend against Valencia, it is not difficult to see why.

While scoring goals is never a problem for Barca, at the back they will have to make do without captain and defensive talisman Carles Puyol.

The influential centre-half has been missing of late with a back complaint and will likely see his place taken by Gabriel Milito, although Rafael Marquez is also pushing for a start.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic will return to Barca's attack following a domestic suspension, while Thierry Henry - who starred off the substitutes' bench at the weekend, could take the place of Bojan Krkic.

Eric Abidal remains an absentee with a groin strain, meaning Maxwell will continue to deputise at left-back.

A hamstring injury could prohibit Seydou Keita's involvement from the start but in Sergi Busquets the Catalan giants have unearthed yet another blossoming talent.

Of greater concern to Guardiola is the news playmaker Xavi is suffering from a muscle problem in his right leg and is likely to be out of action for the next 15 days.

Stuttgart news

Stuttgart go into the game fully refreshed having last played on Friday night, although a defeat at Schalke is hardly ideal preparation for such an important game.

Christian Gross, who has impressed since taking the helm in losing just two games, can welcome French centre-half Mathieu Delpierre back into the fold following suspension.

Germany Under 21 defender Stefano Celozzi has returned to full training following illness, but Gross is unlikely to make wholesale changes.

Martin Lanig, Arthur Boka and Sven Ulreich remain long-term absentees but otherwise Gross has no other injuries or suspensions to contend with.
