Seitaridis Heads Atleti Exit List

Atlético Madrid’s ambitious squad-rebuilding plans show no signs of letting up as the club continue to pursue their next few possible arrivals. But in order to do that, they will have to first discard the surplus to relieve the burden on their wage bill and free up some cash for the transfer kitty.

Portuguese midfielder Maniche, who was left out of the squad’s pre-season trip to Mexico, has already been put on the transfer list and both club and player are awaiting a concrete offer from prospective buyers, with French outfit AS Monaco looking the most likely destination at this stage.

And now it appears that Seitaridis could be next to go. Although the club previously assured the fans that there would be no more major departures, coach Javier Aguirre’s recent demand to boost the squad’s attacking options means that a few more exits appear highly necessary.

Neither Aguirre nor the club have been entirely convinced by Seitaridis ever since his €12 million move from Dynamo Moscow in 2006. He has never been able to replicate the kind of form he showed for the Greek national side during their Euro 2004 triumph and a five-month spell on the sidelines last season hasn’t helped matters either.

Things have certainly become more complicated since the arrival of defenders Tomas Ujfalusi and John Heitinga. Along with the current backline of Antonio López, Luis Perea, Pablo Ibáñez and Mariano Pernía, the competition for places in the first team is expected to be intense and Seitaridis could be relegated to the role of benchwarmer even if he does stay.
