Gmez Extends Malaga Stay

After clinching promotion to La Liga, Malaga are doing all they can to strengthen their squad to prepare for battle in the top flight. Although they do not have the resources to recruit a benchful of new bodies, the club have moved quickly to tie down their key players with long-term contracts.

With fellow defender Robson Weligton having recently signed a contract extension, Jesús Gámez – who had been tracked by the likes of Almería, Sevilla and Tottenham – is the latest player to lengthen his stay at La Rosaleda, signing a new contract that runs until 2012 with a buy-out clause of €10 million.

“Everything has turned out well for me. The only thing that I asked for was for the club to re-evaluate and improve my contract,” Gámez said.

“The president said that it would be done and now he has done exactly that. After many years at the club, I feel rewarded and valued. We are now in the first division and we have to thank (president) Fernando Sanz for his efforts.”

A whole host of players could be next in line to receive a contract upgrade, including Moroccan forward Nahil Bahia, Hélder and youth player Apoño.
