Assunao Delighted With Atleti Switch

The Brazilian utilised the Article 18 legislation, allowing the 28-year old to buy himself out of his contract and complete his move to the Vicente Calderon stadium.

The former Palmeiras and AEK Athens man admitted that the reception he received had made the recent turbulent period, as he tried to engineer his move away from Portugal, worth it.

Assuncao told Atletico Madrid’s website: “(I want to) thank the President, the coaching staff and the manager for the reception that they’ve given me.

“I’m aware that I’m coming to a great Club and that makes me very happy. Now, I want to win many titles with Atlético de Madrid.”

Atletico president Enrique Cerezo also insisted that the player’s move was entirely legitimate, comments that are likely to stoke the growing fire of discontent at Porto.

“(Assuncao) is here because he cut ties with Oporto on his own accord, claiming article 17 of FIFA regulations on Transfer of Players, and said decision by the player was done within the protected time period,” Cerezo added.

Versatility

Cerezo also pinpointed the player’s qualities, believing that he will add “versatility” and “experience” to his ambitious side.

“He’s characterised by his versatility and extraordinary physical strength. We’ve really valued the commitment shown by the player, as we’re looking for footballers involved in the Club’s project. We consider that to be fundamental,” the president stated.

“He’ll provide us with experience, as he’s won 2 Super Leagues in-a-row with Oporto, 1 Portuguese Cup and the Super Cup in the last few years.

The controversy surrounding the deal looks set to remain, with Porto considering legal action against Atletico, adamant that the termination of Assuncao’s contract was in breach of FIFA regulation.
