The rojillos lined up 4-5-1 to begin with and immediately took the game to their opponents in the town of Wörgl. Varela and Josemi came close early on to opening the scoring.
In fact it was Josemi's former Villarreal teammate, Jon Dahl Tomasson, who seemed to be in line to score first, but he was hacked down by Ramis in the box. Feyenoord skipper Danny Landzaat, however, missed the spot-kick.
He was made to rue his miss half an hour in after a cross from Varela out on the right found Juan Arango, and the Venezuelan made no mistake from close range.
The interval saw several changes and thus the intensity of the match dropped significantly. Feyenoord had the best of it early on, but substitute keeper Moyà was able to keep them at bay.
In the end Mallorca managed a second a quarter hour in after new signing Keita freed Arango for his second.
Keita's pace gave the Dutch defence a bit more trouble as the game wore on, but 2-0 was the final score.
