The 118.528 members of Barcelona with voting rights will decide on Sunday whether the current board, led by Joan Laporta, continues at the helm of Camp Nou or has to step down.
A vote of no confidence launched in May by Oriol Giralt Gili and Christian Castellvi Clement against the management of the club was able to gather over 9,000 signatures from associates.
If the motion of censure is not successful, the Barcelona board will be able to stay in charge until the end of the mandate in June 2010. On the contrary, if it succeeds, then Laporta and his board of directors will immediately resign and a provisional commission, presided by Xavier Sala i Martín, will take over until elections take place.
For it to succeed, it is also required that at least 10% of the club's associates vote and that it gathers 2/3 of all the votes.
This is the second motion of censure in the history of the club. In 1998, Laporta himself launched one that sought the oustre of then-president, Josep Lluís Núñez. However, Laporta's move did not produce any effect as Núñez won the referendum with 24.863 votes against Laporta's 14.358.
