Professionally, things have gone well for David Beckham this week. But domestically speaking, it’s one to forget.
The Los Angeles Galaxy star notched an assist England's 5-1 win over Kazakhstan in a qualifying match for the 2010 World Cup on Saturday. But on Friday, two of the Beckhams’ housekeepers at their home in England were arrested for allegedly robbing the couple and attempting to sell the items on the internet.
The Beckhams, who live in Los Angeles fulltime, maintain a staff at the multimillion-dollar seven-bedroom mansion known as “Beckingham Palace,” in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire. The house has an indoor pool, a recording studio, a snooker room, and a “throne room.”
According to the Telegraph, Victoria Beckham’s parents, Tony and Jackie Adams, recognized some of the items on offer at an online auction website. They went over to the “Palace” and realized that the items were missing.
"They were mostly personal and sentimental items collected by Victoria and David during their time abroad,” a source told the Telegraph. “Some of the things were given to them as presents and are unique because they were specially made for them. They include mostly small but expensive trinkets and some pieces which were on decorative display. Together they add up to quite a high value.”
Hertfordshire police are currently investigating the incident. “A 56-year-old woman from Essex and a 55-year-old man, also from Essex, have been arrested in connection with this incident and are currently on police bail," a spokesman said.
In other Beckham housing news, the Spice couple can’t seem to sell their Madrid manor, nicknamed by Victoria as “Casa Beckham.”
The house, which the Beckhams bought for roughly $8.5 million in 2005, was put up for sale 17 months ago when the family alighted for Los Angeles. The initial asking price for around $10 million. Since then, not a single offer has come in. And the Beckhams have dropped the sale price to about $5.1 million.
The five-room villa in the appropriately posh suburb of La Moraleja is “incredible” according to the selling agent. It includes two acres of land, a swimming pool, tennis courts, a small soccer field pitch and a children’s playground.
“They’re going to have to take a lot less than the original price to have a realistic chance of selling the house,” the agent told the Daily Star. “It’s a magnificent place with lots of charm, beautifully and tastefully decorated. But even the super-rich have been hit hard by the credit crunch.”
