Villarreal have been one of the success stories in La Liga over the past few years and this year they are looking to go one better than last as they bid for the title.
So far they sit level on points with Valencia at the top and manager Manuel Pellegrini says he is pleased with the way things have gone.
"One must respect that we have obtained 16 from 18 points, a figure that is very good," he started, "We always try to fight for the title and year after year our objective is to finish higher and to try to close the distances on the top."
"Unfortunately last year Real Madrid had a great campaign because the points we obtained could have been enough to be champions," he declared.
Indeed, so far this year only Osasuna have taken points from Villarreal with a 1-1 draw on the opening day and Pellegrini puts the success down to two things.
"Our success had been built on a solid project with bases that are not altered a lot; work and motivation."
"I do not know if we are an example but we have maintained the conviction in a project and it has been favourable for us," he mused.
Apart from his teams success the manager also brushed off talk that midfielder Matías Fernández would be leaving the club, classing it the speculation as 'rumours without foundation.'
