Pires demands answers

Pires demands answers

Robert Pires feels he is being driven towards a summer exit by Villarreal's refusal to discuss his future.

The Frenchman is set to be out of contract at the end of the season and is yet to be offered fresh terms.

Villarreal are reported to be holding fire on any talks until they know their final standing, with European qualification key to their future plans.

Pires, though, is growing restless and admits it is becoming increasingly unlikely that he will still be at El Madrigal next season.

"I want an answer from Villarreal about my future," the 36-year-old midfielder told Mediterraneo .

"The club has told me nothing as yet. If they want me to go that is not a problem but I need to know where I stand.

"Each day that passes it becomes more difficult for me to stay."

Calls

Pires has also sought to play down rumours suggesting he has already been in touch with potential suitors.

He admits contact has been made by MLS outfit Philadelphia Union but is adamant that he is yet to discuss a move with any club.

"During the last few weeks I have been the subject of unjustified attacks and lies about my future," he added.

"I have not travelled to France to talk with other teams. I went to London for a private matter and had the authorisation of Villarreal to go.

"I have received some calls about my future, not only from Philadelphia but from France and Spain as well."
