Alvarez handed Sevilla job

Sevilla have decided to hand interim coach Antonio Alvarez a one-year contract extension.

The La Liga club parted company with Manolo Jimenez in March after a disappointing run of form, with Alvarez placed in temporary charge until the end of the season.

And after the 55-year-old guided the Andalucian side to the Copa del Rey crown and secured a top-four finish, the club's board unanimously agreed to hand the former Sevilla centre-back the reigns for a full season.

Alvarez progressed through the youth ranks at the club before forming a cornerstone of the Sevilla back four for 13 years until his retirement at the age of 40.

He has gone onto to serve as assistants to a number of managers at Sanchez Pizjuan, including Joaquin Caparros, Juande Ramos and Jimenez, before taking full charge last season.

Club president Jose Maria del Nido will unveil Alvarez as the new manager at a press conference on Thursday.
