Atletico suffer Asenjo blow

Atletico Madrid have suffered a blow with the news that goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The highly-rated 20-year-old suffered a serious knee injury during Saturday night's Primera Division 1-1 draw against Sporting Gijon.

He was substituted just 13 minutes into clash and tests on Sunday have revealed he has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

The keeper is now scheduled to undergo surgery on Tuesday, and is expected to be out of action for around six months.

Very sad

Asenjo will now miss the club's Europa League final clash with Fulham on Wednesday, as well as the Copa del Rey final with Sevilla on 19th May.

Striker Salvio said of the news: "It's very sad for everyone, we are going to support him in every way we can. We are going to fight for both titles and dedicate them to Asenjo."

Asenjo joined Atletico from Real Valladolid last summer for a fee of around 4.5million euros.

But he has seen his opportunities at the Vicente Calderon limited by the emergence of teenager David De Gea, who is now the first-choice goalkeeper for coach Quique Sanchez Flores.
