Primera Liga round-up

Barcelona secured the Primera Liga title in style with a 4-0 victory over Real Valladolid as Real Madrid were held by Malaga.

Pep Guardiola's Barcelona have earned plaudits for their breathtaking performances this season but went into the final day knowing there was still work to do to defend the trophy they won 12 months ago.

There were signs of nerves in the opening stages as Real Valladolid, fighting desperately for survival, applied some pressure and Barca goalkeeper Victor Valdes nearly made a mess of a back pass.

But it was the hosts who made the breakthrough at Camp Nou as Luis Prieto turned a Pedro cross into his own net after 27 minutes.

Lionel Messi set up Pedro to make it 2-0 four minutes later and the Argentina superstar then took centre stage in the second half.

Messi tapped in from close range just after the hour mark following a powerful run by Yaya Toure and then slotted home his 34th league goal of the campaign to complete the rout and spark jubilant scenes.

Valladolid were also condemned to relegation as a result, but they will not be joined in the second tier by Malaga next season after the Andalucia outfit earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Real Madrid.

Madrid trailed Barca by one point at kick-off and needed a favour from Valladolid, but they failed to keep their part of the bargain anyway after a battling display by Malaga.

Duda's neat finish put Malaga in front in only the ninth minute before Rafael van der Vaart equalised early in the second half after being set up by Marcelo.

Duda was sent off late on for Malaga but it mattered little as Madrid had to settle for second place and a season without silverware despite collecting a massive 96 points.

Survival

Racing Santander also secured their survival following a 2-0 success over out-of-form Sporting Gijon.

Mohammed Tchite opened the scoring in the 35th minute and then found the target again 10 minutes after the interval.

Tenerife were relegated after losing 1-0 to Valencia, who were already guaranteed to finish third.

There was nothing to separate the sides until the 90th minute when Alexis struck for Valencia.

Xerez had a mathematical chance to stay up but ended bottom after playing out a 1-1 draw at Osasuna.

Dady's opener for Osasuna was cancelled out by Ramiro Antonito five minutes later, but Xerez could not find a winner and their misery was compounded when Fabian Orellana was dismissed just before the final whistle.
