The signing of Van Der Vaart from Hamburg was greeted with jubilation by Real Madrid fans this summer but as Sport.es reveals, the Dutchman has a chequered past. In an interview he gave to the Spanish paper back in 2002 the midfielder not only admitted his affection for Real Madrid’s bitter rivals Barcelona but also spoke about his desire to play in the Camp Nou.
“I have always liked Barcelona because it has identified with Holland. Michels, Cryuff, Neeskens…and also Romario. He is not a Dutchman but he is my idol. I have always been a follower of Barcelona and I would love to step out in the Camp Nou one day,” he gushed.
Real Madrid’s star summer signing also admitted that should he fly to Spain it would be to play for the Catalans. “I am prepared to leave Holland and play in a large European club. If I should fly to Spain I expect it to be to play for Barcelona,” said the Dutchman.
Whilst the news may shock Real Madrid fans Van Der Vaart admits in the interview that were he to leave Ajax for another club but Barcelona, his grandfather would never forgive him. Certainly it seems that the youngster had plenty of affinity for the club and talking to Sport.es he picked out a few aspects he liked in particular.
“I would love to play alongside Ronaldinho, he is a formidable player and has the spirit of a leader. I know we play in the same position but I can adapt. I can play on the right, on the left and even up front like Kluivert. I believe that I am compatible with Ronaldinho,” he concluded.

Adriano: Sevilla Still A Force
It’s been a busy summer for Sevilla and unfortunately for them most of their transfers having been going out rather than coming in. Manager Manolo Jimenez has had to watch as Daniel Alves, Seydou Keita and Christian Poulsen have all left the club for pastures new.
Yet midfielder Adriano still expects the team to be a force in the league, he said, “We want to be contenders for the league and I believe we can fight for the title. I do not know if we are going to obtain it, but in Spain I do not see many better teams than ours.
“We believe that it is possible to win titles and to have a successful new era.”
Speaking about the loss of the key trio, Adriano said it was a blow but that the squad is now looking even stronger than last year. “It is true that we lost important players, but the club hired other big players and I believe that the team is better than that of last year,” he assured.
During his time at Sevilla the Brazilian has been a mainstay in the midfield, making 74 appearances, and despite transfer rumours linking him to Tottenham Hotspur and Internazionale, he says he wants to continue as a first team regular. “Since I arrived in Seville I have always been a regular, no matter who is the coach, and I want to continue being a regular,” he confirmed.
One of the stories circulating this summer was that Adriano would leave Sevilla to link up with ex-coach Juande Ramos at Tottenham but he denies the rumours. “I know Juande Ramos and I know he likes my qualities. I do not want to leave Sevilla though as I am very fond of the club, the city and the fans.”
Indeed, the Brazilian said that were he to move from Sevilla there would have to be very strong reasons. “Since I was in Brazil I dreamt of playing at a large club in Europe and since I arrived here I felt that I have completed that objective. I feel that I am at a large club and for me to move there would have to be very strong reasons,” he concluded.
Sevilla start their La Liga campaign this Sunday with a trip to Santander to face last seasons surprise package Racing Santander and after an impressive pre-season Adriano is confident of success.
“This year there is more identification between the players and also with the methods of training because Manolo Jimenez knows us better. We have a great team,” said the confident Brazilian.

Schuster: Robinho Not Coming To A Coruña
It’s been the story of the two R’s at Real Madrid this summer; Ronaldo and Robinho. The former was rumoured to be joining Los Blancos and the latter could possibly be leaving them, although with the transfer window closing soon it does seem unlikely.
Despite this though manager Bernd Schuster has confirmed in a recent interview that the Brazilian will not travel with the squad to face Deportivo La Coruña and that it has been his decision.
Schuster confirmed: “I would like the whole matter to be over by now but it isn’t. He won’t travel to Coruña. It has been my decision and whilst the club has expressed it’s opinion to me, as always it’s allowed me to make the decision.”
The striker seemed on the verge of joining Chelsea last week but the deal seems to have been called off for one reason or another, and Schuster stresses that it was not Robinho’s decision not to play. He asserted: “The decision has been mine; I want him to sort his situation out. We’ll see what to do with him when he returns from playing with Brazil.”
Too Much Pressure
There is little doubt that the past few weeks have been a turbulent time for Robinho and the coach admits as much, saying: “There has been a lot of pressure from his entourage and he isn’t fully ready to play. He’s got too much on his mind.
“We realised this during the Spanish Super Cup. We wanted to win the title, so we decided to play it safe with men that were more focused. Robinho won’t be fit to play until the whole matter is over.”
Despite the messy saga, Schuster does admit that he wants the Brazilian to stay at Real Madrid, insisting: “I want him to stay. I’ve always said so and I stand by what I say. He is an important player for us.
“I know what’s best for him, just like a father knows what’s best for his son. He will eventually realise we are right,” he concluded.
Riazor Blade
Speaking away from the topic of Robinho, the coach also had time to share his thoughts about the opener in the Riazor - a stadium in which Real Madrid haven’t won for 17 years. He continued: “ It is an important trip for us, we want to break the streak of not winning in the Riazor. We must be motivated, like against Barcelona and Osasuna last year.”
Los Blancos go into the game at the weekend knowing they are just two short of scoring their 5,000th goal in the league - a feat which Schuster still believes Robinho could achieve. “He could score our 5,000th goal in the Bernabeu if we win 1-0 tomorrow,” he said. “It could happen.”

La Liga Preview: Sporting Gijón - Getafe
It’s going to be a packed house at El Molinón come Sunday night as Sporting open their Primera campaign with the visit of last seasons cup specialists Getafe. The Madrid side reached the final of the Copa Del Rey last season and the quarter finals of the UEFA Cup but their below par league performance will give hope to Sporting fans. The small side from Gijón just sneaked into the promotion places last season but with some wise summer spending and impressive pre-season results they will be more than ready for this encounter.
Indeed, if the form guide is anything to go by then Sporting have nothing to worry about. The newly promoted team have scored a hatful of goals during pre-season and not only did they draw with multiple Mexican league champions Cruz Azul and local neighbours Atlético Madrid but they also beat Italian giants AC Milan 2-0.
That result will give both the fans and the team confidence coming into the season and with a solid team and the same manager as last season there is real belief that they could be a surprise package this year. Coach Manuel Preciado Rebolledo has used the summer months wisely, adding to his ranks and not losing too many of his important players in the process.
Their biggest loss will undoubtedly be Roberto, their first choice goalkeeper who left for Osasuna after six years with the club. It remains to be seen who will replace him with both Sergio Sanchez and new signing Ivan Cuellar vying for the gloves.
Along with Cuellar Sporting have bought in two ex-Levante players in the form of Diego Camacho and Carmelo, Jurgen Colin from Ajax and former Betis player José Maldonado. Their combined experience could be key in pushing Sporting through the difficult patches they are likely to encounter in the season.
For Getafe it has been an eventful summer and with a few decent signings fans will be hopeful looking ahead. The most important of those signings is probably ex-Real Madrid striker Robert Soldado who new manager Victor Munoz will be relying on this season to score his sides goals. Munoz joins the club after a spell at Recreativo and whilst his arrival was not greeted with total jubilation it now seems that the fans are behind him for the campaign.
Certainly he has not done bad so far, making Esteban Granero’s loan deal from Real Madrid a permanent one and also snapping up Eugen Polanski and Joffre Guerrón. The only negatives have been the losses of another Real Madrid loanee Ruben De La Red and Pablo Hernandez, both of whom returned to their parent clubs after highly impressive seasons.
It is likely to be a cagey affair come Sunday night but one which both sides will be keen to win in order to get their campaign off to a good start. For Getafe it is vital that after their worst ever top flight league finish they bounce back and perform well across all fronts, either that or get their priorities sorted. As for Sporting, Rebolledo may well have marked out which home games he thinks are winnable and this would be one of them. Their opponents are likely to be strong but if they defend well and can grab a goal or two then there is a chance it could be a perfect start to the season for Los Gijones.

Scolari: No Robinho? No Problem
Robinho appeared to be all but signed earlier in the week, but relations between the Blues and los Blancos have deteriorated drastically over the past 48 hours.
The Brazilian superstar recently stated his desire to swap the Santiago Bernabeu for Stamford Bridge, prompting negotiations to be thrust toward the closing stages.
But the deal is now in jeopardy after Real president Roman Calderon accused Chelsea of jumping the gun when they started selling shirts bearing Robinho's name.
It is no secret that Scolari is desperate to add the former Santos forward to his line-up, but the ex-Brazil coach insisted it is no skin off his nose if the deal collapses.
"If Robinho’s not here, I have my players," he said in The Sun.
"If we want one more player, we try to buy him. If he doesn’t come, he doesn’t come.
"I have players for that position, so there’s no problem."
Scolari may instead focus his attention on Sevilla striker Luis Fabiano, who is reportedly available for around £18million.

La Liga Preview: Espanyol - Valladolid
Before the opening game of last season between these two sides at the same venue many expected Espanyol to build on their appearance in the UEFA Cup final and go from strength-to-strength, while newly-promoted Valladolid were predicted to chalk up the odd surprise before finally going back to wence they came and descending into the second tier once more.
This summer the two sides meet again in the Estadi Olímpic as the Catalan outfit prepare for their final campaign in the windy arena on top of Montjuïc that they have called home for the last ten years since they moved from Sarria. A new stadium is being built in Cornellà on the outskirts, but when it will be ready is anyone's guess as the deadline has been put back further and further although there will be big trouble if it is not ready before the end of the season.
A change of home is the big thing that is causing excitement at Espanyol this time around rather than anything that the club achieved on the pitch last season. The previous campaign should have been a glorious one to remember, but instead proved to be one of the most disappointing in the history of a club that has recorded some distinctly disappointing campaigns.
Espanyol were third at Christmas after a run of games that had many talking about a place in the Champions League alongside the elite of European football and that anything less would be deemed as a let-down. But it was not a let-down so much as a plummet as Espanyol dropped out of the top four, then out of the top six and then out of the top ten before eventually coming to rest in the mid-table nether regions of twelfth place.
Real Valladolid's season resembled their opponents this weekend, albeit on a lesser scale as they hit the heady heights of seventh in mid-January before winning just four more matches to end the season down in 15th after brief suaree with the bottom three. A lower mid-table finish was respectable enough for a team that was said to be set to go back down but this time aorund expectations will be higher.
This time both clubs have very different ambitions, but while the Pucela will hope for a repeat of last season's 1-0 victory, Espanyol will want to start the season with a win and then look to set off on a run. New signings have been made, but both sides have also seen players leave and the hosts will be counting their euros after seeing Pablo Zabaleta and Albert Riera go to the English Premier League, while the visitors have sold Joseba Llorente to Villarreal.

I Am As Good As Messi And Aguero - Giovinco
The pint-sized hit-man has been outstanding during pre-season and he is likely to shine for Juve this term.
The 21-year is quickly becoming one of the best players in Serie A and he has compared himself to two of the greatest players in Spain.
“Yes, I always get compared to those two players, they are both great superstars but I am like them. I am like Aguero and Messi,” Giovinco told Tuttosport.
“My aims with Juve are to show my true worth. It will be hard to repeat the achievements last term but we have a team who can aim high.
“I had the choice to go elsewhere but I decided to come back to Juve because it has always been my dream to play for them and I am going to use my strengths in order to stay.”
Giovinco spent last season on loan at Empoli where his superb performances attracted the attention of several top sides.
Palermo tried to snap him up but the Old Lady started swinging her hand bag and the Rosanero backed down.
The Bianconeri will now be looking forward to a successful campaign both on the continent and domestically as Giovino tries to prove that he can be the heir to Pavel Nedved’s throne.

La Liga Preview: Valencia - Mallorca
The Big Kick Off
Well, La Liga is finally upon us, and a mouthwatering festival of the best football in Europe awaits.
Los Che’s hosting of Los Bermellones is the standout fixture of the opening day. New coach Unai Emery leads his team out in the first match of what all Valencia fans hope will be a completely different experience from the nightmare of 2007/08.
There is no clear-cut top four in La Liga - never has been - and while we know Barcelona and Real Madrid are sure to populate it, the order and make-up of the chasing pack is anyone’s guess. Valencia fell away badly last term, but now look to return to their customary place in the pecking order of Spanish football, located firmly among the top guns of the league.
While last season saw some surprise performers in the shape of Racing, Mallorca and Almeria (who all made the top eight unexpectedly), ultimately, as is so often the case, the excitement and intrigue of this season will depend upon the challenges made to the Clasico pair. La Liga needs a firing Valencia, and the circumstances are ripe for a resurgence. The big question is, are they really up to it?
Villa and Silva Stick
Perhaps one of the most unexpected conclusions to any of the long-running transfer stories of the summer is that Valencia have managed to nail down their star duo after the heroics of Euro 2008. Had David Villa and David Silva chosen to twist, the duo's options would have been plentiful.
As far as we know, both players turned down opportunities to leave the Mestalla. Given the financial problems at the club, all either really needed to do was ask to leave. It would have inevitably heralded a flood of big offers, and the temptation to take the money, rather than hold on to personnel who may not give their all to the cause, would surely have proved too hard to resist. Villa and Silva’s retention, and very public retention at that - with a variety of positive statements coming from both recently - is a magnificent shot in the arm for Valencia as a whole.
However, the fact is, all of this is temporary. Villa may have won many hearts by claiming Valencia is as good for his career as Real Madrid, but perhaps not so many minds. We will know all we need to about his bold statement in the coming weeks.
Crucially, the focus for Valencia must be on every other (and I mean every other) area of the field. For the club to get off to a flying start, Villa will need to received an endless supply of service, and Silva alone cannot be relied upon to provide it.
The midfield has massive question marks, not least in the centre, while the horrid defensive showing of last season must be wiped from the collective mind. The Valencia players are far, far better than that. Now they absolutely must show it.
As I have said already, this season the club almost needs to apologise to its fans, and do so with entertaining football, and even more entertaining results.
Success Breeds Change?
Mallorca had a fantastic campaign last time, missing out on automatic qualification for the UEFA Cup by a whisker.
The islanders then turned down the opportunity to enter the Intertoto, quite possibly because they a knew a busy summer lay ahead. Ten players have left the Ono Estadi (or Son Moix, as the locals prefer to call it), and twelve have arrived.
Gregorio Manzano has a lot of work to do if he is to fashion a team as fluidly functional and confident as last season’s incarnation. The heart of the team has been torn out with the loss of Borja, Fernando Navarro, Jonas, Guiza and Ibagaza to name but five.
The likes of Cléber Santana, Martí, Josemi, Ayoze and David Navarro are a mixture of sound signings, gambles, ifs, buts and maybes. It’s fine to plug a gap, but not half a team. Time will tell if Manzano’s got it right, but you have to feel a little for the Mallorca fans who have endured so many relegation dogfights in recent seasons, largely because of poor planning and use of resources.
The final piece of the Mallorca jigsaw was secured just recently in the shape of Bilbao’s Aritz Aduriz. Anyone who has watched the Basque forward will know he is no replacement for the departed Dani Guiza, in style of player or quality terms. But there is real hope in the shape of youngster Oscar Trejo, if he remains on the island amidst concrete pursuit from Premiership outfit WBA, while new signing Alhassane Keita will also be looked to for goals.
Either way, Guiza's sizeable haul will have to be covered somehow if 2008/09 is to be another trouble-free campaign for the plucky club and its much-travailed fans.

Villa Agent Meets With English Clubs - Report
Kepa's Getafe Future Uncertain
Kepa arrived at the Coliseum last season for a modest fee from Sevilla, but managed just five Liga starts, ten substitute appearances, and two goals.
With Soldado signing for the Azulones this summer the ex-West Ham man's chances of first team action are set to decrease further, meaning that a loan may be on the cards.
Getafe's management are thought to be eager to give the 24-year-old some extra first team action, and as such they are courting the interest of Málaga and Valladolid.
However neither of these sides has yet proved willing to take on the player's entire wage bill, which is apparently the sticking point of any potential deal.
Indeed it is thought that if neither of the clubs relent and offer to pay his salary in full then Kepa will have no choice but to fight for a first team place alongside the likes of Ikechukwu Uche, Manu del Moral, Juan Angel Albín, and of course Soldado.

Spain Marks Anniverssary Of Antonio Puerta's Death
On August the 27th Puerta collapsed to the ground in front of stunned home fans at the Ramón Sánchez Pízjuan before eventually being rushed to hospital.
However, it was not enough to save him, as at 14:30 local time on the 28th of August, the young international passed away.
To this day Sevilla fans mark the 16th minute of games - remembering Antonio's shirt number - but this being one year after the fact today holds a special significance.
As a member of one of Sevilla's best ever sides Puerta's legacy is secure enough, but it must also be remembered that he is a father. His son, Aitor, was born two months after his death.
Meanwhile the city of Seville was brought together by the tragic event, with even Betis fans walking side-by-side with the rojiblancos.
To celebrate Antonio's life and achievements, Sevilla arranged the 'Trofeo Antonio Puerta' this year. Fittingly the home side won 2-0 over Málaga on the 23rd of August.

Juve Working On Appiah Deal – Agent
Appiah is currently a free agent after he last week negotiated an exit from his club of the last three years, Fenerbahce.
The 27-year-old has since come out in public and declared that it is his dream to rejoin Juventus, who he represented from 2003 to 2005, before joining Fenerbahce for €8m.
There have since been reports in the press that a deal is imminent, especially because Juventus are looking to sign a centre midfielder before the transfer window closes on Monday.
However, the Old Lady will have to move swiftly, as Appiah has received numerous requests from England, Scotland and Spain for his services.
“We would like things to be sorted out as quickly as possible and a contract could be signed before next week,” said the Ghanaian’s agent Frank Trimboli.
“While I am saying that we are in no hurry, it is up to the club to make things happen.
“I have received a concrete offer from Racing Santander and Portsmouth are calling us practically every day. West Ham, Celtic and Everton have also expressed an interest.
“However, Juve are working on a solution and we will keep waiting because the lad hasn't hidden his desire to play for the Old Lady.”
Appiah has also played in Italy for Udinese, Brescia and Parma.

Manu: My Salary Could Have Been Trebled
Despite the arrival of Roberto Soldado at Geta, Manu feels that he still has a lot to contribute to a club that he loves.
To this end he did not attempt to pressure the Getafe hierarchy into allowing him to leave for another, unnamed club that offered him generous personal terms.
"It was an interesting offer, but my priority was to remain with Getafe out of respect for many things - the fans and the club, who gave me the opportunity to play in the Primera," said the 24-year-old.
"The financial offer from the team that wanted me was extremely interesting - three times my salary - but I left it up to Getafe. They turned it down, so I'll continue working as usual."
The former Atlético Madrid man said that although the offer was good for both him and his club, he's now committed to the Azulones' cause.
"I have a two year contract here and I intend to fulfill it," he said.
"I think it was an offer that could have benefitted both of us, but I'm not a player who's said he wants to leave because that isn't the case.
"They had to accept or reject it, and in this case it was rejected. Here I am, but with all the excitement in the world."
Season Goals
Manu, a former Recreativo loanee, stated his immediate aims, as well as those for the season.
"The game against Sporting on Sunday will be tough: they'll be extremely excited at coming back up, and it's at their ground," he said.
"It's a pretty complicated game. I imagine that their players and fans alike will be crazy. We must be very focused.
"As for the season, I hope that we reach the UEFA Cup and get to the final of the Copa del Rey, as I think we're capable. But in football one must be cautious and prudent, and go step by step. The main goal - but not the only one - is survival."

La Liga Season Preview: Real Betis
2007-08: How It Ended
Betis have struggled in recent seasons to emulate the success of their champions League qualifying season in 2004/2005, where they finished 4th in La Liga. Last season was no different – languishing in mid-table mediocrity for almost the entire campaign, and ultimately just managing to gather enough points to offer breathing space from relegation. Hector Cuper desperately struggled to live up to the reputation he forged so craftily at Valencia at the start of the decade, and instead took a side that had narrow avoided the drop in 2007 and threatened to finish the job this time. Their inept displays eventually led to Cuper being relieved of duty in December, and Paco Chaparro was drafted in as his replacement.
Chaparro stepped up from his position as Betis B coach and steadied a ship that appeared to be sinking. As a result in June he was rewarded with a contract extension, and there is moderate optimism that with Chaparro having a full pre-season to exert his influence on the squad, Betis can not only improve their league position, but also their level of performance.
Of course, the manager has had to work on a tight budget. With the clubs financial status far from clear, there has been relatively little action in the transfer market, although the small alterations that Chaparro has made are in positions that were desperately in need of strengthening.
Summer Activity
Turkish midfielder Mehmet Aurelio joins from Fernerbahce on a free. The bulky Brazilian born holding player should add muscle and drive to the Betis central area, and could potentially offer a similar type of service as Marcos Senna performs so astutely for Villarreal. The player also had a decent Euro 2008 for the Turks, so should be full of confidence for the season ahead. And also landing him for nothing represents an excellent piece of business.
Betis’ biggest outlay was for Ligue 1 star Achille Emana. The Cameroon international has signed from Toulouse for an estimated 6 million Euros and should complement Aurelio nicely in the centre of midfield. His game is based on energy and driving runs, and he could well provide the attacking spark to support the forwards. He is a big, powerful individual and along with Aurelio they should ensure Betis won’t be bullied in the centre of the park this season.
Juanma Gomez came in from Levante for 1.5 million Euros. The right-midfielder has had to endure a season from hell at financially-stricken Levante, so will be delighted to be returning to La Liga after his former sides’ demotion last term. He can offer depth to the squad and can also play in the centre if required. Finally, Nélson, a right-back, arrived from Benfica for a fee of €6m.
Leaving the Manuel Ruiz this summer are Francisco Maldonado, Miguel Angel and Dani. Maldonado has barely featured over the last few seasons. A product of the Betis youth system, he was consistently loaned out, spending spells at AD Ceuta, Lorca Deportiva and Gimnastic in three of the last four seasons. Eventually he has been deemed surplus to requirements and has moved to Sporting Gijon on a three year deal.
Miguel Angel has also moved on, returning to old club Malaga on a free transfer. The player has had limited opportunities in the first eleven over the past three seasons, due to injury and loss of form. He spent last season on loan at Levante, and now he has returned to the club where he spent the most successful part of his career.
Finally, striker Dani has moved out on loan. After making 91 appearances for Betis since 2001, scoring 19 goals, he spent last season at Cadiz where managed ten goals in the Segunda. However Betis have sent him back out to the second division, this time with Elche.
Betis have also released two goalkeepers, veteran Pedro Contreras and Toni Doblas. The latter was ousted by the arrival of Ricardo last season and has contract has not been renewed for 2008/2009.
After these captures, speculation has been surrounding the prospect of the Verdiblancos adding one more signing before the end of the transfer window. Mexican Nery Castillo is in talks with the club, and at the time of print, the negotiations are at an advanced stage. The striker was a 20 million Euro purchase for Shakhtar Donetsk last summer, but after a series of fallouts, including refusing to allow teammate Christiano Lucarelli to take a penalty before him, he was dropped altogether. He ended last season on loan at Manchester City, where he failed to set the league alight, only managing seven starts. The jury is out on Castillo, on both his temperament and also his value to the team. It remains to be seen that if Betis do indeed get their man, what level of impact he will have on the side.
Analysis & Prognosis
One definite constant among Betis followers is that without talisman Edu, Betis would be significantly worse off than they currently are. Edu netted a third of Betis’s total goal haul in the league last season, effectively keeping the side in the division. After a summer of verbal spats with the board over his wages (an issue that the supporters have backed him 100% over) he eventually agreed to stay for at least another season, warding off interest from Villarreal. Edu was the one element of success from last season, and although he will miss the beginning of the season through injury, if he can stay fit then Betis are a better team. He should have more support this season from the new midfield pairing too, and if he can improve on his tally of 13 last season Betis should climb the table.
They do, however, have a very difficult opening run of fixtures, playing Sevilla, Barcelona and Real Madrid within the first five games. It isn’t an ideal run, but you have to wrestle with the big teams eventually and Betis will hope to continue their reasonable pre-season form into those games.
After the disappointment of the previous few seasons, Paco Chaparro can guide Real Betis to relative safety this season providing his new signings can remain injury-free, particularly the midfield pairing of Emana and Aurelio. The imminent arrival of Castillo is undoubtedly a gamble, and he will either settle well and become a useful asset, or cause unnecessary unrest within the dressing room; he is simply that type of player. What is key is that the coaching staff and players concentrate on football and not any disharmony that may emanate from the boardroom, particularly from volatile owner Lopera. They can have no influence over it – so they must concentrate on returning Betis to winning ways.

Villa Set To Sign New Contract
With the new season just days away now it looks as though David Villa is set to sign a new contract with Valencia which will tie him to the club until 2014.
The Spanish striker has been the subject of more than one bid from Real Madrid this summer but after Valencia rejected the last offer of €40 million it looks as though the matter will finally be bought to a halt this evening. It is believed that the Asturian player will appear at a press conference at 18.00 today along with president Vicente Soriano to confirm the signing.
Speaking on his way out of a meeting with Soriano and vice president Fenando Gomez Villa’s agent Luis Tamargo said that the discussions had revolved around ‘the enlargement and improvement of the contract… not a move to another club.’
This will no doubt be a huge confidence booster for Valencia manager Unai Emery who at points this summer must have feared he would be starting the new season without two of his key players. Both David Villa and David Silva have been rumoured to be moving from the club but with the close of the transfer window approaching any such move seems unlikely.
With Villa absent from discussions today his agent spoke on his behalf, saying, “David Villa is a player of Valencia and he has never spoken of any desire to abandon the Mestalla.”
As far as Real Madrid go it will be the second kick in the teeth in the space of a day as they have also seen an approach for Villarreal midfielder Santi Cazorla turned down. He, too, has signed a new deal at his club.

Valencia Want Milito To Replace Villa?
It’s been a turbulent summer at the Mestalla so far and there are no signs that the whirling transfer mill is about to stop. Just hours after rejecting a huge bid from Real Madrid for star striker David Villa, it appears that Los Che will have a fresh offer to mull as the champions up the ante.
With Fernando Morientes reportedly on his way to Galatasaray, the loss of Villa would be a massive blow to Unai Emery and his Valencia side. It does appear, however, that they are preparing for the worst and could now move for Zaragoza striker Diego Milito.
The Argentine international was once a target for Real Madrid, but with Los Blancos' eyes now firmly on Villa it could be Valencia who end up signing him. The worry for Emery, then, would be replacing two strikers with just one. Not only that, if he loses David Villa then he will have lost one of the best forwards in La Liga.
Abelda Tolls For Thee
Also in the spotlight is midfielder David Abelda, who could be on his way out of the club if the right offer is received. Valencia have so far rejected bids from Everton, Blackburn and Manchester City, but it is believed that Portsmouth could lure the Spaniard away if they are willing to pay more than the rest.
His exit would be the end of a long saga which saw him left out of the squad for much of last season. Despite the manager not wanting to lose him, the consensus in the club appears to be that he will be sold if a realistic offer comes in. If he does depart, another Zaragoza player in Albert Zapater could be a possible replacement.
In an unrelated twist, it also appears that Valencia Sporting Director Juan Sanchez has left his position after just four months. The former player took over in April after the loss of Miguel Angel Ruiz, but appears to have stepped down amidst the chaos.

Usain Bolt Is A Blanco
In an interview with Marca the sprinter, who won three gold medals at the Beijing Olympics, not only proclaimed his support for Real Madrid, and in particular Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Raul, but also said he dreams of joining the stars for a coaching session.
“I hope they let me train with them one day. I say it in all seriousness,” he revealed.
In pledging his support for Los Blancos Bolt joins an elite list of Real Madrid supporting sportsmen, including tennis players Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer as well as cyclists Carlos Sastre and Albeto Contador.
Along with Michael Phelps, who apparently idolises another Spaniard in the form of Rafael Nadal, Bolt was one of the stars of the Olympic Games, winning the 100m, 200m and the 4x100m and breaking the world record in each.
Real Madrid are currently preparing to begin the defence of their La Liga title against Deportivo this weekend after winning the Super Cup against Valencia a few days ago.

Golden Boy Messi Back At La Masia
With his Olympic medal now safely on the mantel piece it was business as usual for Messi today as he returned to training at Barcelona’s youth academy La Masia.
The young Argentine has been left out of the squad to travel to Poland for the second leg of their Champions League Qualifier against Wisla Krakow in a bid to keep him fit for the start of La Liga.
The 21 year old was up bright and early as he trained with reserve team player Victor Sanchez. They were put through various training exercises including circuits, shooting and of course ball control.
The rest of the squad is currently in Poland for their match against Wisla Krakow, which they already lead 4-0 after an impressive victory at home, and it is likely that Messi will link up with them later this week.
So far Barca have looked very strong in pre-season even without Messi and they will be hoping that with the Argentine back they can get their campaign off to a winning start on Sunday.

Madrid Set For Last-Gasp Villa Bid - Report
The Spanish radio station reports that the Villa saga, thought to be long since closed, has been re-awakened this week.
According to sources the player has already said that he would accept if a suitable offer came in from the blancos, despite the fact that earlier this summer he heavily played down talk of a move.
Madrid president Ramón Calderón, still licking his wounds after failing to land Cristiano Ronaldo, may opt to make a last-ditch bid for 'El Guaje' ahead of the new season so as to strengthen his forward options, which at the moment almost begin and end with Raúl and Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Another factor is at play, namely that of Robinho. The Brazilian has publicly stated that he wishes to leave the club, and although Madrid have told him that he will not be sold with their permission, Calderón has admitted that the ex-Santos man could potentially buy out his contract.
Should he do so, the arbitration courts would potentially award Madrid with around €45m, which could in turn be used to pay Valencia for Villa.
Villa, while reluctant to publicly court a move, has not yet penned a new deal at the Mestalla. He was on the verge of doing so, but that may now change.

Top Twenty Transfers Of The Summer (Aug 25)
The factors taken into account are
(a) form over the last 12 months,
(b) potential, and
(c) transfer fee involved.
The extension from ten to twenty was compiled by taking into account previous editions.
This week Mirko Vucinic, Martin Cáceres and Tomáš Ujfaluši were knocked out of the top 20 in favour of three new editions. Find out who below...
20. Giovani Dos Santos (Barcelona to Tottenham)
Last week: 17
A rather opportunistic and clever signing by Juande Ramos, but he is a gamble nonetheless. There is a good reason Barcelona got rid of him on the cheap. His attitude had been a subject of concern for eighteen months, which saw young Bojan Krkić leap ahead of him in the pecking order. His impact on the dressing room had not made positive news either. Spurs fans must hope that was the exception and not the rule.
19. Hatem Ben Arfa (Lyon to Marseille)
Last Week: 16
Marseille have lost Samir Nasri to Arsenal, but have managed to land the perfect replacement in the man Arsene Wenger had his sights on to start with. What is more, they can keep him for a year or two, and make a cool 8-10 million profit.
18. Alberto Gilardino (Milan to Fiorentina)
Last Week: 15
On the face of it, it looks like the Viola have signed an unhappy, out-of-form striker. However, that was just what Adrian Mutu's move from Juventus looked like not so long ago. The fans will help him forget Milan in a hurry, and rediscover the striker that wowed Calcio when at Parma. The partnership with Mutu can be backed to produce some special moments in the Champions League.
17. Andriy Shevchenko (Chelsea to AC Milan)
New Entry
After two seasons of mediocrity at Chelsea, the Ukrainian is back at his spiritual home. Nonetheless this is a considerable gamble for the rossoneri: with a full complement of fit strikers, a Shevchenko who cannot hit form may warm the bench. On the other hand his return - even as a 30-year-old - could signal a goalscoring comeback unseen in Serie A since... well, since Andriy Shevchenko.
16. Julio Baptista (Real Madrid to AS Roma)
New Entry
The Beast, The Tank - you'd be as well calling him The Happy Wanderer, for the Brazilian has now experienced three countries in as many seasons. The 26-year-old has only seldom repeated the form that saw him shine at Sevilla four seasons ago, but he began the last campaign well enough with Madrid. Part of the problem is that he's been kept out of position for so long in order to accommodate more prestigious players: if Roma can build a system around him, instead of slotting him in wherever there happens to be a space, they could have a real superstar on their hands.
15. Seydou Keita (Sevilla to Barcelona)
Last Week: 14
At the time of his arrival he was the best signing Barcelona had made this season, particularly in light of the way their soft underbelly was exposed on the road last year. With him partnering Yaya Touré in the middle, it will ensure that the likes of Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi do not get bullied, and also get the full license to thrill. 15 million euros worth their value.
14. Ezequiel Garay (Racing Santander to Real Madrid)
Last Week: 13
What a capture! Barcelona seemed to have him in the bag, but hesitated a little too much as they waited for Frank Rijkaard to leave and a new coach to take charge. Madrid managed to snatch Sergio Ramos a few years ago, and what a signing that has turned out to be. This one may be no different.
13. Deco (Barcelona to Chelsea)
Last Week: 12
On the wrong side of 30, a first look suggests that he is past it, but nothing could be further from the truth. There is a fire that burns in him as we saw during Euro 2008, and he has a lot more to give to football. He is not what Frank Lampard is, as he will never score as many goals. But then, he is also everything Lampard is not. Superb creativity, a great eye for the game, and an ability to run the show that has seen him win the Champions League with two different clubs. Finally, Chelsea have a player who can orchestrate the pleasing football their owner wants. With Ballack and Essien set to play around him, it will be an ominous midfield.
12. Amantino Mancini (Roma to Inter)
Last Week: 11
Jose Mourinho does not quite promote exciting football, but he does like a fast, aggressive winger forward at least on one flank. That is just what he has found in Mancini, who will be handed the license to thrill just as Arjen Robben was during the glory years at Chelsea. Tends to blow hot and cold, though, as Roma found out last season. Lack of consistency will not go down well with the 'Special One', so he does need to focus a lot more.
11. David Bentley (Blackburn to Tottenham)
Last Week: 10
A great way for Spurs to show their ambition - by winning the race for the talented Blackburn winger, and in the process signing a former Arsenal youngster. Given what Juande Ramos did with Jesus Navas - a very similar player - this one has success written all over it. He has the potential form a formidable attacking midfield along with Giovani Dos Santos and Luka Modric.
10. Robbie Keane (Tottenham to Liverpool)
Last Week: 9
Make no mistake, I rate him very highly. That said, the Reds paid a few millions too many. He will still score the 15-20 goals needed to complement Fernando Torres' 25-30, so Rafa might just have splashed the extra cash with good reason. Their draw happy start to the season destroyed their title challenge last time around, so goals is what they need, and that is what they will get.
9. Amauri (Palermo to Juventus)
Last Week: 8
The Brazilian-Italian striker made it to number three after earning himself a long overdue move to a top four club, but now slips down to nine. He has already shown his potential with Palermo, and the prospect of him getting some top quality service from the Juve midfield is simply mouth-watering. Champions League, here he comes.
8. Vincent Kompany (Hamburg SV to Manchester City)
New Entry
The former Hamburg man left Germany under something of a cloud in order to affect a very quick transfer to City, but for all the "shotgun wedding" nature of the move it seems to have been the Mancunians' best of the summer. Put it this way: just one game into his tenure he put in a confident, mature showing in what is thought to be the world's fastest and most furious league, then said afterwards with characteristic nonchalance that he learned his new teammates' names on the pitch. Imagine what he'll be like once he's settled in and has a bit more experience.
7. Daniel Alves (Sevilla to Barcelona)
Last Week: 7
Chelsea, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Manchester United – these are just some of the clubs that have queued up for him over the last 18 months or so. However, it is Barcelona who land him after some difficult negotiations with Sevilla. Perhaps a touch overpriced at 30 million euros (he would have been number one on this list at 20m), but then again, he is the best attacking full-back this world has seen since Roberto Carlos.
6. Samir Nasri (Marseille to Arsenal)
Last Week: 6
The highly rated French international is the latest to join the clan of young Gunners. Many view him as a replacement for Aliaksandr Hleb, while others go a step further and call him the next Zidane. He has had some problems with injuries, but let's hope those were exceptions as opposed to the rule. The prodigous playmaker is at number five.
5. Ronaldinho (Barcelona to Milan)
Last Week: 5
A gamble? Yes. But given the chance, would you sign one of the all time greats of football for a third of his market price last summer? You bet you would. At 28, he is far from over. Some diet planning and some tough training, and he will give at least three or four good years to the Rossoneri. A gamble nonetheless, or he would definitely have been number one. Number four for the Gaucho.
4. Luka Modric (Dinamo Zagreb to Tottenham)
Last Week: 4
The hottest young Croatian was snapped up by Spurs despite the interest of clubs such as Barcelona and Chelsea, and what a signing it has already turned out to be. Looks set to become the jewel in Juande Ramos' midfield next season. He remains at the sharp end of our list.
3. Aliaksandr Hleb (Arsenal to Barcelona)
Last Week: 3
A very shrewd buy, and what could very well turn out to be a stroke of genius from Barcelona. With Lionel Messi expected to run the show, what they needed was not a Ronaldinho, but a tireless, no-nosense attacking midfielder to offer support from the other flank - without hogging possession or the limelight. And they got him on the cheap too. A true critics' player in that while fans rave about others, he runs away with the technical plaudits.
2. Mathieu Flamini (Arsenal to Milan)
Last Week: 2
The underrated Frenchman was one of Arsenal's best players last season, and Milan's signing was nothing less than a coup. That it was a free transfer makes it even better. Has been the smartest transfer this summer for a while, now, but drops down to number two, finally.
1. Rafael van der Vaart (Hamburg to Real Madrid)
Last Week: 1
A lifelong Barcelona fan and one of the best playmakers in the world today, how Madrid managed to sign him for nine million euros I don't know. What is even more baffling is how Hamburg let him go at that price (even if clauses could raise it to 13m). I would probably have put him up here even if he had cost 15 million. A downright steal, and just the kind of person who will add to Bernd Schuster's team without destroying it (get the hint?).

CL Preview: Wisla - Barcelona
Barcelona are playing the respect card ahead of their second leg encounter against Wisla by talking about the game being the most important of the year and wanting to give everything.
The Polish hosts will no doubt be flattered, but certainly not fooled by the Blaugrana's attempt at not stating the obvious, which is the tie was decided in the first game at Camp Nou two weeks ago.
Pep Guardiola will take his side into the game to use it as a final pre-season warm-up encounter before the serious business of la Primera begins with the trip to Numancia on Sunday.
It is not disrespect to Wisla to state that they are only playing for pride, because even the most ardent supporter would have known that after the opening leg saw Barça win 4-0 that it was not looking good for Maciej Skorza's outfit.
Samuel Eto'o used the first meeting to great effect by scoring twice and winning over the fans that towards the end of last season were keen to cash in on him in favour or a new striker.
The Cameroonian forward netted his brace and enjoyed the renewed adulation of the Barça supporters by proving that when he is on form there are few to match his ability in and around the area.
Xavi Hernández also showed a new side to his play under Guardiola as he took the coach's instructions to look for more goals seriously and hit a spectacular drive from outside the area.
Injury Matters
Thierry Henry was the other scorer and the Frenchman looks set to finally prove that he can become a hero at the Catalan club after being told by the new trainer that he is to lead the team from the front.
All of those players will want to put in another impressive display in Poland, if selected, but of equal importance will be to avoid picking up an unnecessary injury so close to the start of the league.
Barcelona have enjoyed a relatively comfortable pre-season campaign and maintained their 100 per cent record with two injury time goals in the Trofeo Gamper game against Boca Juniors last time out.
Guardiola will be pleased to have the chance to give his side one last run-out with the element of competition about the match, rather than having to see them go through the motions in another friendly.
Wisla were hoping that the attraction of seeing Barcelona would inspire their supporters as it looks set to be their only Champions League home game of the current campaign.
One problem though was that the four-goal deficit was not factored in when trying to gauge the excitement surrounding the visit of the Blaugrana to Krakow.
Ticket prices were lifted to around the €60 and €75 mark which would have been barely justifiable had the tie been evenly balanced, but now look extortionate given that it is not.

Scolari: Robinho Will Make A Difference
Robinho shocked the football world yesterday by announcing his desire to quit the Santiago Bernabeu, stating that he had "come to an end of a cycle" and wished to fulfill his "dream of playing in the English league".
The 24-year-old is now almost certain to make the switch to Stamford Bridge, as los Merengues have reportedly accepted a £28million bid from the Blues.
And Scolari is adamant that his young compatriot will be a hit in west London.
"I have never coached Robinho but he is different and we need a player like that — a player on the pitch who makes a difference," he told The Sun.
Scolari also suggested that the former Santos star will provide a valuable alternative in terms of the way his side lines up.
Against Portsmouth last week the ex-Brazil boss used an abundance of central players, with Michael Ballack, Frank Lampard, Jon Obi Mikel and Deco all starting.
But with Robinho, who usually plays wide for los Blancos, Scolari is confident that Chelsea will not become predictable.
"If we have only one system of play, it will be easy for our opponents," he added. "If we need to change the system, we need a different player and Robinho’s style is what we want."

Official: Valero Signs For West Brom
Tony Mowbray’s side have been chasing the midfielder over recent weeks and has now confirmed the deal has finally gone through and that the 23-year old has signed a three year deal at the Hawthorns.
"I'm delighted to welcome Borja to the club," Mowbray trumpeted on the club's official website.
"From a footballing point of view he possesses many of the attributes I like in a player.
"Borja can link up the play from back to front and he will enhance the excellent midfield options we already possess."
The deal means Valero is West Brom’s new record signing, smashing the £3.5 million they paid Cardiff City for Robert Earnshaw in 2004.
Valero initially came through the ranks at Real Madrid before moving to Mallorca in last year. However, he revealed his desire to leave the Spanish club over the summer and impressed the Baggies in a pre-season friendly.

I Wish I Wasn't Black - Asprilla
The Colombian hit-man has been making all the wrong headlines over the last several years and he is likely to find himself deeper in trouble after his latest ranting and raving.
Asprilla has claimed that he would prefer it if his skin complexion was of a lighter tone because he believes that being a black man makes him the victim of much stereotype.
“I want to stop being a black man,” Asprilla told La Gazzetta Dello Sport.
“I have reached the conclusion that the colour of my skin has conditioned other people to think bad things of me.
“I believe if I was a white man most of my mistakes would go un-noticed. I don’t mind being black but it causes me certain problems.”
Asprilla spent four years in Serie A with Parma, making 84 appearances and scoring 25 goals.
He will always be remembered for his silky skills and dazzling legs.
However, he has also been making the headlines for all the wrong reasons. In 2000 he was accused of firing a hand gun after a weekend of drinking.
His latest rambling is likely to stir up even more controversy.

Three Forwards On Barcelona Shortlist - Report
The newspaper indicates that, with ten days left of the transfer market, the 'Guardiola Project' is nearly at its conclusion.
However, the side still requires a left forward, apparently, with Ronaldinho having since departed for AC Milan.
Three names are prominent in the shortlist for this position. First is Rodrigo Palacio of Boca Juniors. His main attribute is versatility; as well as playing out wide, he can play as a second striker or as a pure 'number 9'.
Next up, Anderi Arshavin's move to Tottenham Hotspur has collapsed, leaving Barcelona in the clear to land the Russian. However he could cost up to 20 million euros - a hefty sum for someone unproven outside Zenit.
Finally, according to Sport Van Persie of Arsenal is seen as the "purest" option and the one that would fit Guardiola's system "like a glove." However, given that he is a major Arsenal stalwart, his arrival seems unlikely at best.
Sporting director Txiki Begiristain has conspicuously failed to rule out any more signings and an approach for any one of these three is far from impossible within the next week or so.

Licht: Where Are The Goals?
The Argentine stopper said that it was a major "worry," and that he was "concerned that goals were not made."
"Last year we made mistakes and the first half of the season ended badly," he said. "We failed to start well and thus we want to do better in the opening dates this time."
Thankfully for him, he sees that the squad are "very keen" to begin the season, although the adjustment to the new system of coach Víctor Muñoz has been "gradual."
"We're preparing game by game," he added.
"We want to start the league - that's the most important thing - but there's another friendly match on Saturday that we need to look forward to fulfilling.
"The coach's whole system is new and we're struggling a bit. We're grasping the pace and how to execute it for the first time."

Robinho Pushes Malouda To Roma?
Roma are well known to be searching for a winger to replace the recently departed Amantino Mancini, and they have been linked with Malouda all summer.
Malouda only signed for Chelsea last year from Lyon for a hefty €20m, but he failed to live up to his price tag during his debut season in England.
There have been constant reports in the media that the 28-year-old is not in the plans of the club’s new manager Luiz Felipe Scolari, but over the past couple of weeks, Malouda has twice publicly declared that he wants to stay at Chelsea.
However, this may now all change if Robinho completes his move from Real Madrid to Chelsea. This is now looking more and more likely after the Brazilian declared his wish to move to Stamford Bridge.
"I dream of playing in the Premier League,” said Robinho.
“Chelsea have a great squad, a great team, and they've made an offer that's great for both me and Real Madrid.”
If Robinho joins Chelsea, there will be little space for Malouda, who only started as a substitute during the first game of the season against Portsmouth on Sunday.
This could push Malouda to Roma, who would guarantee the 2006 World Cup star a guaranteed first team place in their starting XI.

Agent Rubbishes Forlan To Spurs Rumours
Forlan has been linked in the press with a return to English football, following an unsuccessful spell with Manchester United, but his agent, Daniel Bolotnicoff, has insisted he is happy with Atletico Madrid.
The Uruguayan has enjoyed success since joining Villarreal from Manchester United, winning the Pichichi with the Yellow Submarine before being snapped up as a replacement for Fernando Torres for Atletico.
He has since forged an effective partnership up front with Sergio Aguero, and claims that he may return to England as a replacement for Dimitar Berbatov - who, to complete the cycle, is being linked with Man United - have been shot down by his agent.
"Forlan is very happy at Atletico," Forlan's agent told El Mundo.
"I don't know anything about Tottenham's supposed interest and him leaving would be very difficult."

No Offers For Riera - Herrera
The left-winger has been linked with both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur this summer, despite his only previous spell in English football not producing the best of results with Manchester City.
He enjoyed something of a breakthrough campaign last season, making it into the Spain squad during the Euro 2008 qualifiers, but losing out during the Austria-Switzerland triumph due to his side's dramatic slump in form.
With Tottenham having signed David Bentley and Giovani dos Santos, they dropped out of the running to sign Riera, but Liverpool remained tenuously linked until Herrera, formerly a scout for the Reds, confirmed today that no offers have been made for the winger.
"We have received no offers for Albert Riera. Not from Liverpool or any other club," he told Sky Sports.
"We know what has been written in the newspapers, but this is the truth."
The player's agent, Magico Diaz, claimed Liverpool are interested in the 26-year-old, but will not meet Espanyol's demands. "Liverpool want Riera but Liverpool are reluctant to meet Espanyol's demands," he said.

Salgado: Robinho Can Do More
The Spanish Super Cup pits the victors of La Liga with the Copa Del Rey winners. This year, Real Madrid are again contesting for the trophy, but this time against Valencia.
The first leg was staged at Mestalla where Los Che edged out Madrid in a 3-2 winning display, but Michel Salgado believes Los Merengues can overturn the deficit when they welcome Valencia to the Santiago Bernabéu.
Reflecting on the nature of Valencia's win, Salgado said: "They are best at stealing the ball, and counterattacking... we lost the ball where their most dangerous men play. At the Bernabéu they will defend, waiting to counterattack, but we just have to play our game and recover possession whenever we lose it."
Salgado was subbed during the game and was asked if he believed Bernd Schuster thought he was at fault for the concession of the goals: "No, I don't think so," he explained "I even think the substitution was planned. We allowed Valencia to play as they wanted."
He added: "We will win the tile if we defeat Valencia 1-0, but we'll have to work on our mistakes to win the Super Cup. We should be weary against a quality team like Valencia."
Robinho has been linked with a move to Chelsea, to join up with Luiz 'Big Phil' Scolari. Such accusations have been laughed off by Madrid chiefs. The Brazilian forward finished the game as an observer, as he was benched after the hour mark.
Solgado, in a stinging statement perhaps aimed at Robinho, said: "The coach knows how fit the players are."
He also said that he will need to step up his game if he is to stay in Spain: "We must be demanding with him... he is capable of making more of a difference on the pitch."

Top Twenty Transfers Of The Summer (Aug 18)
The factors taken into account are
(a) form over the last 12 months,
(b) potential, and
(c) transfer fee involved.
The extension from ten to twenty was compiled by taking into account previous editions.
20. Mirko Vucinic (Roma/Lecce to Roma)
Last Week: 20
The Giallorossi have finally secured full ownership of the Montenegrin, purchasing the second half of his contract from Lecce for a meaty 12 million euros. Is he worth 24 million today? Probably not. However, he has improved massively over the last 12 months, and continues to get better by the week.
19. Martín Cáceres (Villarreal to Barcelona)
Last Week: 19
The 20-year-old Uruguayan is regarded as one of the best young defenders in La Liga, and Barcelona wasted little time snapping him up from Villarreal. A touch overpriced at around 16 million euros, but a great signing for the future nonetheless, particularly with Carles Puyol beginning to show his age.
18. Tomáš Ujfaluši (Fiorentina to Atlético Madrid)
Last Week: 18
At long last, Atleti have made a good defensive signing - for free, even. They were in denial last summer when they failed to take concrete steps, but have landed just the man to lead their defence upon their return to the Champions League after over a decade. That he comes for free makes it even better.
8. Amauri (Palermo to Juventus)
Last Week: 8
The Brazilian-Italian striker made it to number three after earning himself a long overdue move to a top four club, but now slips down to seven. He has already shown his potential with Palermo, and the prospect of him getting some top quality service from the Juve midfield is simply mouth-watering. Champions League, here he comes.

Spurs fans must hope that was the exception and not the rule.

Robinho Is Staying For Sure - Report
Marca wrote in glowing terms of Calderón's recent actions, stating that the 'presi' "has been steadfast at all times and has not yielded to the claims of the English club," namely Chelsea.
It is thought that Madrid were for a time under pressure from Robinho's agent, Wagner Ribeiro, to accept the megabucks offer from Chelsea for their star winger.
Indeed, Robinho was described as being unhappy at the club after being allegedly used as a bargaining chip during the Cristiano Ronaldo saga, and his being kept back from the Olympic Games merely cemented his sour mood.
However it is thought that the promise of a new contract at Madrid has persuaded the ex-Santos man to stay at the club, especially given that Calderón is said to be playing hardball with Abramovich, who is sweating over the prospect of having to break the €40m barrier for a last-ditch attempt at signing Robinho - one that looks increasingly unlikely.
Despite this positive report, though, Calderón has still been quieter than usual recently. It is thought that he is wounded by the failure to land Cristiano Ronaldo, not to mention earlier reports of unrest surrounding Robinho.
That Marca is reporting that the winger's situation is now resolved, though, may signal a return to the public eye for the president, although if Wagner Ribeiro again surfaces to report his client's thoughts then Calderón could again be placed under pressure. While Marca writes in glowing terms, of course, one must remember that Calderón has not gone uncriticised by others this summer.

Official: Fabiano Joins Celta Vigo
The 29-year-old made 28 Serie A appearances last season, helping Genoa to a fine tenth place finish, but he had seemed almost certain to move on to fellow Italian club Reggina.
The Brazilian, who can also play at left midfield, has been training with the Amaranti for over a month, but the transfer could not be completed.
It was revealed yesterday that Spanish second division side Celta Vigo had come in with an offer for Fabiano, and although the player seemingly preferred to stay in Italy, he has had no choice but to accept their offer given all the confusion.
Fabiano moves to the Estadio Balaidos on a one year loan deal, and he will be hoping to help the Galicians to promotion back up to La Liga.
Celta were relegated down to the second division at the end of the 2006/07 season, and they had a miserable campaign last term also, only finishing in 16th place.
Fabiano joined Genoa from Palmeiras in 2006, but he now moves on to another European country.

Casillas: We Must Protect Robinho
The goalkeeper told As that the close-season dramas engulfing Robinho had had a negative effect on his play.
"It's inevitable that the controversy that surrounded him has played a role in his performances on the pitch," he said.
"We players are not machines and when someone is the focus of so much talk it can affect them at a personal level. We must protect him."
Looking back at the 3-2 loss at the Mestalla in the Supercopa, the Spanish international said that he was a "little bit sad" at the result as Madrid "can't afford to concede three goals in 45 minutes.
"We need to refine and improve what we did wrong, but we're not worried as that was only the first official game and we're still in pre-season.
"But even so, if you lose games like this you go home annoyed.
"In the first half we had one chance yet still scored... but we will fight to overcome what is not a bad scoreline."

Sporting Injury Worries Lessen
The influential pair missed Saturday's match with Real Valladolid in Luarca but have recorvered in time to make the squad to meet Atleti.
The coach announced the following squad: Cuéllar, Sergio Sánchez, Sastre, Diego Camacho, Jorge, Canella, Míchel, Matabuena, Landeira, Pedro, Omar, Luis Morán, Raúl Cámara, Neru, Andreu, De Lucas, Kike Mateo, Diego Castro, Iván Hernández, Jorge Pina, Bilic, Barral, Gerard, Carmelo, Maldonado, José Ángel.
Although Atleti will provide a stern test on Monday night against Atleti in the Trofeo Teresa Herrera it is not thought that the side will go overboard, for the fans are looking forward to an upcoming match with AC Milan.
That game against the Italian giants is a repeat of a UEFA Cup match that took place almost 20 years ago and is considered the high point of what is already a significant summer for the Gijón side.
The 1998 clash between the two sides at El Molinón ended 1-0 in favour of the Asturians, but Milan walked the away leg 3-0. Appropriately enough, Espanyol then eliminated Milan in the second round en route to the final.

Silva Signs New Valencia Deal
A host of clubs have been tracking Silva this summer after the young playmaker turned heads with his fine performances for Spain at EURO 2008 in June.
Manchester United lodged a formal bid for the 22-year-old earlier in the week but were wholeheartedly rebuffed by los Che, who are desperate to hold onto their stars after a torrid 2007-08 campaign.
Furthermore, Silva recently revealed that he has no desire to leave Spain - not even to link up with compatriots Rafa Benitez and Juande Ramos at Liverpool and Tottenham respectively, who have both expressed interest.
And the youngster's future at the Mestalla is now effectively secured after he penned a new five-year deal yesterday, much to the delight of Valencia president Fernando Gomez.
"It's very satisfying to see the player's willingness to stay," Gomez told the press.
"The club will not do anything crazy or break our financial and sporting guidelines so we have gone as far as we have been able to.
"There is complete agreement between the club and the player David Jimenez Silva that he will remain with us for the next five seasons.
"We have always expressed the hope that he will stay with us."
Valencia will now focus their attentions on tying down star striker David Villa, who has also been linked with a big-money move to the Premier League.
