Benfica have been looking for a new left-winger since the appointment of Quique Flores as manager this summer. Some feel that since losing Simao Sabrosa the club has struggled to fully cover the left-wing position, and thus Reyes is welcome competition for Ángel Di María.
Reyes, who will arrive at Lisbon's airport tonight, is expected to be officially unveiled at Estádio da Luz on Friday as soon as he passes his medical with the Eagles.
The former Arsenal man has signed for Benfica on a one-year loan move with a view to a permanent deal, with the Portuguese club having paid a fee thought to be greater than €2.5 million for 25% of his playing rights.
A statement on the club's website read, "Gifted with a fabulous left foot, Reyes can play on the left flank but he can also play sometimes in other attacking positions.
"Dribbling, creativity, passing skills and powerful shots are just some of the attributes of this player, who also excels in dead-ball situations. He is another great addition to the renewed Benfica side," a statement on the club's website reads.
Reyes failed to settle in at the Vicente Calderón under Javier Aguirre despire starting last season in blisterng fashion.
