Pellegrini - We deserved draw

Pellegrini - We deserved draw

Manuel Pellegrini believed Real Madrid deserved a draw at least after watching his side go down to a Zlatan Ibrahimovic goal at Barcelona.

The striker came off the bench in the 51st minute to volley home the winner five minutes later.

Earlier Cristiano Ronaldo saw his 20th minute strike well saved by Barcelona keeper Victor Valdes, while Lionel Messi could have added a second for the champions late on but Iker Casillas saved.

Both sides finished with ten men as the Catalans held on to leapfrog Real at the top of the table, taking a two point lead on Pellegrini's side.

Deserved draw

But the Real boss believed his side had created enough chances to get something from the game.

He said: "We at least deserved a draw because, if I am not mistaken, we had a lot of shots on their goal in the first half.

"We had two clear chances with Cristiano (Ronaldo) and Marcelo as well as some good counter attacks."

He added: "Barca never dominated the game and I don't go along with the idea that Ibrahimovic changed the game.

"They didn't dominate with or without him. He scored the goal which was important but I don't think he changed the game.

Several openings

"They got the goal in the second half and there was the chance for (Lionel) Messi but we had several openings."

Ronaldo played 66 minutes in his first start since the end of September but Pellegrini said the former Manchester United man could not have played any longer as he recovers from his ankle injury.

"I was given the green light to play him (Ronaldo) for an hour any longer anything else would have been unwise," said Pellegrini.

"He played as much as he could."

Preciado pens new deal

Preciado pens new deal

Sporting Gijon have rewarded head coach Manuel Preciado with a new two-year contract.

Sporting have made a bright start to the 2009/10 campaign and currently sit seventh in the Primera Liga standings.

They have gone unbeaten through their last six fixtures and will now be setting their sights on securing European qualification for next term.

Much of their success has been put down to the fine leadership skills of the experienced Preciado.

He has been in charge at El Molinon since 2006 and will become the club's longest serving manager if he sees out his latest deal.

Initial reports suggested only a one-year extension would be tabled, with the option of a second year depending on results.

Optimism

However, Preciado's fine work has led the club to offer a longer deal at this juncture.

President Manuel Vega Arango is delighted to have reached an agreement with his highly-rated manager and hopes Sporting will continue to progress in the future.

"Preciado has brought optimism to the club," he said in Marca .

"I am grateful for the fine work he has done during the time he has spent with us.

"Things have moved slowly, but always forward, and things keep on getting better."

Yeste hints at new challenge

Francisco Yeste has admitted that he could be tempted to leave Spain next summer as a free agent.

The 29-year-old will see his current contract at Athletic Bilbao expire at the end of the 2009/10 campaign.

With fresh terms yet to be agreed, there is every chance the midfielder could be on his way out of San Mames in the not too distant future.

Yeste has already spurned one offer from Bilbao, with wages reported to be the sticking point, and claims he would have no problem with walking away from the club.

He insists he would not join another Primera Liga side, but has revealed that he would be open to offers from abroad.

He said: "If I can't come to an agreement with Bilbao I would go abroad."

Bilbao are keen to avoid losing Yeste for nothing and could be willing to do business during the January transfer window.

Premier League outfit Sunderland are reported to have expressed an interest in the talented playmaker, but it remains to be seen whether they will be prepared to match Bilbao's valuation.

Iniesta extends Barca deal

Iniesta extends Barca deal

Andres Iniesta has signed a one-year contract extension with Barcelona with a minimum fee release clause of €200million.

The news will give the Spanish champions a boost ahead of the eagerly awaited first 'El Clasico' of the season at Camp Nou on Sunday.

The 25-year-old was contracted until 2014 but Barca were eager to tie the midfielder down to an extra year with Iniesta's buy-out clause also rising by €50million.

After an injury-hit start to the season the Spain international is beginning to show the kind of form that has established him as one of the leading midfielders in world football.

Iniesta follows the likes of Eric Abidal, Victor Valdes, Lionel Messi, Carles Puyol, Yaya Toure and Pedro in extending their stays with the Catalan club.

Abidal reveals contract delight

Barcelona defender Eric Abidal has stated his love for the club after signing a contract extension at the Camp Nou.

The 30-year-old penned the new deal on Wednesday, which runs until 2012 and includes a €90million (Ј81million) buy-out clause.

The Frenchman, who was recently diagnosed with swine flu, has also seen an increase in his wages but admits that his passion for Barcelona is his main motivation for putting pen-to-paper.

He told skysports.com : "It is a fantastic moment for me, I love this club, we play good football and we will always be a favourite to win a football game.

"To be playing in this fantastic club for five years is a dream come true," he added.

Abidal missed his country's controversial 1-1 World Cup play-off draw with the Republic of Ireland through injury last week after featuring in the first leg in Dublin.

However, the full-back remains on course to make Raymond Domenech's squad for South Africa providing he stays clear of injury.

He stated: "My ambition is to return to the national team, and be in the squad for the World Cup in 2010."

Alonso targets improvement

Alonso targets improvement

Xabi Alonso has admitted that the current Real Madrid crop are uncomfortable with the term 'Galactico'.

The word is most commonly associated with the Real Madrid side of a few seasons ago when Florentino Perez was in his first tenure as club president.

The likes of Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, Luis Figo and David Beckham were brought to the Santiago Bernabeu in big-money moves but Real sometimes failed to live up to they hype and deliver the trophies expected of them.

Perez has assembled a similarly impressive squad since becoming president again over the summer, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Alonso among the new arrivals.

However, Alonso would prefer not to be referred to as a 'Galactico' and has insisted Real are still far from the finished article.

"That's a term that has done a lot of damage to past eras," the former Liverpool midfielder told the Daily Mail .

"That's why it is avoided. We never use that word. It's nothing close to Galactico here. It's very humble, everything here is earthly.

"I think we're in a process. There's a lot of things to improve, to gel, but I feel we've taken a step forward.

"In that sense we are happy. But we don't want to get over-ambitious, just get better."

Barca test

Real travel to Camp Nou to face Barcelona in the first El Clasico of the season on Sunday and Alonso is relishing the challenge.

"It'll be a nice experience for me. It is a massive stadium," he said.

"The last time I played there was with Liverpool, last 16 of the Champions League, and we got a great result. So my last memories are brilliant.

"But it'll probably be a more passionate game on Sunday, the Clasico for them is very important.

"It's always special to play in the Nou Camp. I've played there with Real Sociedad, with Liverpool, but playing there with Real Madrid will make it even more special because we know the meaning of this big Clasico."

Barca v Real Madrid preview

Barca v Real Madrid preview

The first 'El Clasico' of the season takes place this Sunday as Barcelona lock horns with Real Madrid, live on Sky Sports 1 & HD1 .

The anticipation surrounding Spain's premier fixture is higher than ever with both clubs fully stocked with star-studded names after the Primera Liga giants splashed over Ј300million on summer signings.

New additions for the Camp Nou clash are Barca's marquee signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic, while Real have reclaimed their 'Galactico' status with the likes of Xabi Alonso, Karim Benzema and world record signing Cristiano Ronaldo all arriving at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Both sides are faring well in domestic and European leagues - Pep Guardiola's Catalans beat Inter Milan on Tuesday to boost their hopes of retaining the UEFA Champions League while Sunday's visitors sit top of Group C after their latest win over FC Zurich on Wednesday.

As for the Primera Division, Manuel Pellegrini's side currently set the pace after they narrowly beat Racing Santander to leapfrog Barca last weekend, who could only manage a 1-1 draw at Athletic Bilbao.

With top spot and the ever-crucial head-to-head record at stake when Madrid come to town, Barca midfielder Xavi has demanded his team-mates remain faithful to their attacking philosophy by dictating the game against their bitter rivals.

Despite hammering Real 6-2 at the Bernabeu last season en route to winning the league, Champions League and Copa del Rey, Xavi insists victory - and not the margin of it - is most crucial.

Victory

"We are not thinking about beating Real Madrid by many goals," he said.

"We want the three points and that is what we will go out to win. We have a lot of respect for them and we must be careful because historically these are complicated games.

"They are the leaders at the moment and they are scoring goals at the moment. But we are at home and we are highly motivated for the game.

Alonso has revealed that Los Blancos are trying to treat the Barca showdown as just another three points, insisting the tie will not prove decisive in who will win the league this season.

The former Liverpool midfielder - who returned to his homeland last summer in a Ј30million move - hailed Xavi and Andres Iniesta as the players to watch.

"It will be important, but not decisive. Three more points are at stake, but we will face our greatest opponent and there are nevertheless many games left in the championship," he told his club's official website .

Of Xavi and Iniesta, Alonso said of his Spain team-mates: "Their performance level is truly impressive. I believe they are the best midfielders in the world."

Team news

Barca will call on their Spanish stars to do the business for them on Sunday as they look unlikely to call upon the services of Lionel Messi or Imbrahimovic for the derby affair.

Neither forward seems fit enough to start, Messi is struggling with the leg injury he picked up last weekend while his Swedish strike partner has been unable to shake off a thigh complaint.

Real have been boosted by the return of Ronaldo after the Ј80million signing made a successful comeback from an ankle injury as a substitute in Wednesday's Champions League success.

Pellegrini faces a dilemma on who to partner Raul up front with Gonzalo Higuain staking his claim after scoring his seventh goal of the season midweek, while Benzema will be hoping to feature in his first taste of 'El Clasico'.

Future doubts for De la Pena

Future doubts for De la Pena

Ivan de la Pena has hinted that he will retire from football in the summer if he fails to shake off a niggling injury.

The Espanyol ace admits he is finding life on the sidelines increasingly frustrating, and he could be ready to hang up his boots.

The 33-year-old feels useless while unable to take to the field and does not want to become a drain on the club's resources.

For that reason he has revealed that if he is no longer able to perform to the best of his ability he will walk away from the sport.

"I want to be training with my friends and be 100 per cent," De la Pena told Marca .

"It's a complicated situation and at the moment I can't do anything with my body.

"First of all I want to get back playing, but it has to be without discomfort if I am to give my all.

"I want to feel useful because if I am not, I am better off staying at home.

"I feel good at the moment but I need to find a solution to the problems I have."

Chevanton off to Italy

Sevilla have announced that Javier Chevanton will join Atalanta on loan in January for the remainder of the season.

The Uruguay international has made just one appearance in the Primera Liga this season after being deemed surplus to requirements.

He will now have the opportunity to reignite his career in Italy, with Atalanta having an option to make the move permanent over the summer should they be suitably impressed.

"Chevanton will join Atalanta on loan from 2nd January until the end of the season," read a statement released by Sevilla.

"Atalanta reserves the option to buy the player once the loan spell ends.

"Sevilla has given permission for Chevanton to train with his new team-mates although the loan deal will not be effective until January."

Unfortunate

The 29-year-old joined Sevilla from Monaco in 2006, but previously spent three years in Italy with Lecce.

He is looking forward to making a return to Serie A and hopes he can put the injury problems of his recent past firmly behind him.

"I have one further year left in my contract with Sevilla," said Chevanton.

"These six months will be good for me to prove and display what I am capable of doing.

"I haven't been lucky in Sevilla, mainly due to injuries.

"Unfortunately, I have not been able to triumph here but I will always carry Sevilla in my heart."

Zabaleta urges Robinho stay

Pablo Zabaleta believes it is imperative that Manchester City retain Brazil international striker Robinho when the January transfer window reopens.

It has been mooted City could cash in on the former Real Madrid ace with European giants Barcelona reportedly keen on bringing him back to La Liga.

Zabaleta has denied there is any disharmony among Mark Hughes' squad and that the gifted 25-year-old gives City an added dimension.

Robinho is in line to make his City return against Hull at the weekend after missing nearly three months with an ankle injury.

"I think it's vital that Robinho stays with Man City," he told The Sun .

"He is a player who can give us more quality and he means a lot to his team-mates.

"There is no problem with him or with the other players."

Robinho mustered 15 goals in his first season with City and Zabaleta believes he can get even better this time around if he can remain injury-free.

"I think he can do even better," he continued. "Naturally, you always expect more from a player like him because there's a reason why he cost more than Ј30m.

"But I hope we can enjoy having him with us for a long time. The truth is, we will achieve our goals faster as a club with players like Robinho here."

Primera Liga round-up

Primera Liga round-up

Valencia moved back into the Primera Liga's top four on Sunday with a convincing victory on their travels.

Villarreal secured a welcome win as they clambered into the relative safety of mid-table.

Getafe and Real Mallorca also secured maximum points from their latest top flight outings.

Valencia sit just four points adrift of league leaders Real Madrid after they saw off Osasuna 3-1 in an action-packed encounter.

Los Che raced into a three-goal lead, with David Villa (12), David Albelda (20) and Carlos Marchena (56) putting them out of sight.

Walter Pandiani then became the first man to see red for the hosts when he was shown a second yellow card on 65 minutes.

Massoud Shojaei pulled a goal back for Osasuna three minutes later, but a miserable night for Jose Antonio Camacho's side was compounded in injury-time when Miguel Flano was dismissed.

Villarreal entered the weekend perched precariously above the drop zone, but became upwardly mobile after claiming a 3-1 win over Real Valladolid.

Nilmar was the star of the show for the Yellow Submarines as he bagged a brace (7 & 48) to put them in full control.

Giuseppe Rossi added a third on 57 minutes, ensuring Da Costa Diego's strike three minutes later was nothing more than a consolation.

Getafe responded in style to recent back-to-back defeats by seeing off Espanyol 2-0.

It took 79 minutes for the deadlock to be broken, as Casquero Paredes finally forced a way through.

Maestre Pedro Rios then put the seal on the win when he settled Getafe's nerves in stoppage-time.

Real Mallorca also left it late in their meeting with Almeria, but ultimately emerged with a 3-1 success.

Gonzalo Castro had the hosts in front three minutes into the second half, but Sanchez David Rodriguez restored parity after 77 minutes.

Victor then pounced for Mallorca in the final minute to restore their lead and Casto bagged his second of the game in the dying seconds to wrap up the points.

Struggling Xerez remain in trouble towards the foot of the table after they could only muster a goalless draw at home to Sporting Gijon.

Malaga continue to prop up the rest despite taking a point from a 1-1 draw with Real Zaragoza.

Herrera Ewerthon gave Zaragoza the lead from the penalty spot after 49 minutes, in a game which would see both sides finish with 10 men.

Shortly before the hour mark Javier Paredes Arango saw red for the visitors, for a second bookable offence, and two minutes later he was followed down the tunnel by Robson Weligton.

Hernandez Ivan that grabbed an equaliser for Malaga with 16 minutes remaining to keep them in touch with their fellow strugglers.

Barca - Milito not for sale

Barca - Milito not for sale

Barcelona have told Real Zaragoza that there is no chance of them re-signing Gabriel Milito now that he has recovered from a long-term injury because he is wanted at Camp Nou, according to the player's representative.

Los Manos made an enquiry about the defender's availability and were advised to look elsewhere as Pep Guardiola regards the Argentinian as an important part of his squad.

Milito joined Barca in 2007, after four years with Zaragoza, and made 27 appearances before suffering a knee ligament injury in May 2008 that saw him miss the whole of last season.

Having battled back to fitness Milito is close to a return to action and that attracted the interest of Marcelinho Garcia Toral at La Romareda, but Barcelona are adamant he is staying put.

"Yes, Zaragoza asked if there is the possibility of a transfer," Milito's agent Eduardo Gamarnik told RAC 1 .

"But Guardiola is counting on him for this season and is sure he'll be fine."

Kaka eyes El Clasico

Real Madrid's Kaka cannot wait to take on Barcelona in the Camp Nou on Sunday.

The Brazilian playmaker, who moved to the Bernabeu in a Ј59million switch from AC Milan in the summer, has yet to taste the atmosphere of 'El Clasico'.

While Madrid take on Zurich in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, Kaka admits the players have one eye on the Barcelona clash, which is being shown live on Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports HD1 at 6pm.

Kaka told Cadena Cope : "We are thinking about Zurich, but everyone has told me how unique the Clasico is.

Eyes closed

"Barcelona can play with their eyes closed. They know each other perfectly and play so well, but we are the leaders.

"I don't think either side is the favourite on Sunday.

"Heading into the match as the top team is good because we can open a four-point lead by winning."

On a personal level, the former Milan star thinks that he is beginning to find his best level after a spell adapting to a new country and different style of football.

Improving

"I am improving little by little. I prepared well and I am growing with the team. I am figuring out exactly what position and role I play in order to benefit the team," he added.

Meanwhile Kaka has revealed his admiration for Sevilla, who inflicted the only defeat on Real in the league last month, and in particular their wingers Diego Perotti and Jesus Navas, who caused so many problems that evening.

"I really like Sevilla. They have really surprised me. Perotti and Jesus Navas are very good," he said.

Abidal pens Barca deal

Eric Abidal has put pen-to-paper on a new deal at Barcelona that will keep him at the club until 2012 as coach Pep Guardiola looks to tie down his key players.

The French full-back signed the new agreement the day after helping the Blaugrana to an impressive UEFA Champions League win against Inter Milan at Camp Nou.

With his previous deal running until the end of next season, Abidal was keen to add at least another year and after negotiations with technical secretary Txiki Begiristain a deal was reached.

While his buy-out clause has remained at €90million the France international, who recovered from the H1N1 virus this week, saw his salary increase.

Barca have worked on trying to secure the services of several of their first-choice stars in recent months and Abidal is their sixth to pen a new deal.

Victor Valdes, Pedro, Carles Puyol, Lionel Messi and Yaya Toure have all reached agreements with the club after being key members of last term's treble-winning squad.

Abidal joined Barcelona in the summer of 2007 from Lyon.

Atalanta have finalised a deal to sign Uruguayan striker Javier Chevanton.

The Sevilla ace will move to Serie A on 1st January after a loan deal until the end of the season was agreed.

Chevanton has sunk down the pecking order at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, with the likes of Luis Fabiano, Fredi Kanoute, Alvaro Negredo and Arouna Kone all ahead of him.

He has now agreed to join Atalanta, primarily in order to secure a place in Uruguay's World Cup squad.

"I have an objective and that is to play in the World Cup finals next year with the Uruguayan national team and that's why I have said that the transfer to Atalanta is important for me," he said.

Sevilla coach Jose Maria del Nido revealed that the club's coaches wanted to see Chevanton play more regularly.

The loan move of Chevanton was done at the request of the coaches who think that he needs to play regularly," said del Nido.

Messi worry for Barca

Messi worry for Barca

Lionel Messi is a major injury worry for Barcelona ahead of their games with Inter Milan and Real Madrid.

Argentine ace Messi limped off during the second half of Saturday's 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao with a thigh problem in his left leg and he will undergo tests to determine the extent of the injury.

Barca will be keeping their fingers crossed as they face Inter Milan in a crucial UEFA Champions League fixture in midweek before hosting bitter rivals Real Madrid at Camp Nou next weekend.

Barca coach Pep Guardiola admitted it was a blow to see Messi pick up an injury.

"The initial feelings are not too good to be honest," said Guardiola. "I'm sure that he feels sad, nobody likes to be injured."

Barcelona defender Dani Alves admits it would be a major blow to lose Messi ahead of such a crucial week.

"It's bad news because he is an important piece for us, although we must wait to know the extent of the injury," noted Alves.

Depor have enjoyed an excellent start to the season and came into the game in fifth place in La Liga, but they looked to be in trouble early on as Sergio Aguero struck after just three minutes to give Atletico a much-needed boost.

Miguel Angel Lotina's side came back into it when Diego Colotto equalised after 20 minutes and, just when the game appeared to be heading towards a stalemate, Pablo brought down Alberto Lopo and Guardado kept his cool after Atletico's fierce protests - which saw Cleber Santana sent off and Sanchez Flores race onto the pitch - to coolly fire the winner.

Agent - Jovanovic going nowhere

Agent - Jovanovic going nowhere

Milan Jovanovic's agent has played down speculation that the Serbia star could be on the move in January.

Jovanovic is out of contract at Standard Liege at the end of the season and there is speculation that the Belgian champions could be open to selling the forward in January, rather than risk losing him for nothing next summer.

Everton have held a long-term interest in the striker, while Birmingham are thought to be in the market for a new forward in the January transfer window.

The striker has also been linked to Aston Villa, Atletico Madrid, Roma and Stuttgart, while Valencia were thought to have been close to sealing a deal for the forward to move in January.

But the Serb's agent Torsten Weck told calciomercato.it that the player will not be going anywhere in the New Year.

Interest

Weck said: "I heard about the interest of Roma but I had no direct contact with this club.

"The only contacts I have had are with the Germans and the Spanish club, Valencia, in the first place.

"The player will not go anywhere in January, but will remain until June because Standard Liege have played in the Champions League and therefore Jovanovic couldn't play for another club in the competition this season."

Barca duo snub English offers

Barcelona duo Thiago Alcantara and Jonathan Dos Santos have rejected overtures from Premier League clubs to sign new deals at Camp Nou.

Thiago, 18, is the son of Brazilian World Cup winner Mazinho and, although born in Italy and raised in Brazil, has represented Spain at youth-team level since moving to Spanish shores in 2004.

The attacking midfielder made his Barca debut towards the end of last season in the 2-1 defeat in Mallorca and has reportedly spurned the chance to join Chelsea.

Meanwhile 19-year-old Dos Santos, younger brother of Tottenham's Giovani and son of former Brazilian professional Zizinho, has been linked with a move to Manchester City but both are set to sign new contracts with Barcelona.

The pair's current deals are set to run out at the end of the season, sparking the interest from Chelsea and City, but Barca sporting director Txiki Beguiristain is confident the youngsters will pen their new contracts after the Fifa Club World Cup in December.

However Mazinho has reportedly stated that his son will only sign if the terms to which they have verbally agreed, thought to be that Thiago will move from Barcelona B to the first-team squad, are included in the written contract.

Dos Santos's plans are thought to be more straightforward with the midfielder, who made his bow for Mexico before making his debut for Barcelona in October, happy to sign now.

Kaka living the dream

Kaka living the dream

Kaka has revealed that Real Madrid were the only club he would have considered leaving AC Milan for.

The Brazilian was criticised by some for succumbing to the offer of more money when he joined Real in the summer for 67million Euros.

The attacking midfielder has rubbished such claims, citing his rejection of Manchester City last January and Chelsea in the summer as perfect examples of why he is not motivated by boosting his income.

Instead the former Sao Paulo youngster admits that it was a dream to join Real and the time was right to leave the Rossoneri after six years at the San Siro.

"Madrid is a great club," he told Cadena Cope radio station.

"I could have gone to any team if it was a matter of money, but I always dreamed about playing here. That's exactly what I told (Carlo) Ancelotti when he wanted me to sign for Chelsea.

Spectacular

"Manchester City made a spectacular offer and it was the first time Milan opened it's doors to sell me. Fans wanted me to stay and I did.

"I realised it wasn't time to leave and my wife and family helped me make the decision. If there was a day that I ever left Milan it would be to come to Madrid.

"Now I hope to win many titles here. I have a good relationship with (Sergio) Ramos, Iker (Casillas), (Lassana) Diarra and all the Brazilians."

Kaka has begun his Real career modestly with just four goals in 16 games in all competitions, but insists he is enjoying his football having been restricted by the shackles of the more tactical Serie A.

"The Calcio isn't as strong as it used to be before the corruption cases," he said of the standard of Italy's top flight.

"The tax matter also plays a role. Football there is very tactical and it taught me a lot, but I have a lot more fun now."

Tamudo in limbo at Espanyol

Tamudo in limbo at Espanyol

Wigan Athletic target Raul Tamudo has admitted that things for him at Espanyol are not easy as he comes to terms with the controversy surrounding whether or not he wanted to leave the club.

The problems between him and the club have seen his chances of earning a new deal next summer virtually disappear and he has been omitted from the squad during the public spat.

While Tamudo claims that he has never tried to force his way out of Espanyol, club officials, including the president, begged to differ and the rift has hurt the player and he is now likely to head to England in January.

"It is not a good situation for anyone," he told TV3 . "From one day to the next it is not easy not being able to play and wear the team's shirt.

"But now at least people are focussing on Espanyol and not on Raul Tamudo which means that we are all in the same boat here.

"Things are not easy because many things that are being said are not true.

"In the end, all I want is to play. I look forward to being able to wear the shirt and kiss the badge again because that will mean that I have scored.

"It is what I have done throughout my career and what I want to continue to do.

"At no time have I wanted to offend anyone and only wanted the opposite, which is to score goals and help the team."

Atletico fined for coin incident

Atletico fined for coin incident

Atletico Madrid have been handed a paltry fine of just 150 Euros for their fans' behaviour in the recent derby against Real Madrid.

Real manager Manuel Pellegrini was hit in the face by a coin thrown from an Atletico supporter midway through the second-half causing the referee to halt play for around a minute.

The Chilean was not seriously hurt and played down the incident at the end of the game after seeing his side run out 3-2 winners.

It is not the first time Atletico have been punished for their fans' behaviour after they were hit with a 3,000 Euro fine when supporters threw missiles at Sevilla goalkeeper Andres Palop in the 2005/06 season.

However, they have managed to get away with a lenient punishment this time around with a spokeswoman for the Spanish Soccer Federation confirming the fine of 150 Euros [Ј133].

Viola calm on Vargas link

Viola calm on Vargas link

Fiorentina are unconcerned after Real Madrid were linked with Peru international defender Juan Manuel Vargas.

The Liga giants are being strongly tipped to move for the 26-year-old, but Viola insist he is going nowhere.

Sporting director Pantaleo Corvino is not reading much into the speculation and has confirmed they will only let unhappy players depart.

Vargas, who is described as the new Roberto Carlos, is a key player in Cesare Prandelli's squad following his €12million move from Catania.

Rumours

"I have heard these rumours regarding Real Madrid's reported interest in Vargas and we acknowledge it and move on," said Corvino.

"We are used to having players being linked to clubs. But we are here not to sell but to keep our players and improve our squad.

"We will only sell those who don't want to remain at the club and in that case, we will try to get the best possible deal."

Swine flu blow for Barca

Swine flu blow for Barca

Barcelona have confirmed defender Eric Abidal and midfielder Yaya Toure have contracted swine flu.

The Spanish league leaders said that Abidal was tested for the virus after feeling unwell and developing a fever, with club doctors confirming the 30-year-old had caught the illness.

Midfielder Toure later showed similar symptoms and underwent similar tests, but has now officially been diagnosed.

The pair have been ruled out of Saturday's clash with Athletic Bilbao, as officials at the club put in precautionary measures to stop the virus spreading.

A statement from Barcelona read: "Eric Abidal and Toure Yaya have viral-like symptoms with fever and general discomfort.

"Relevant tests have been carried out on both players and these have confirmed that it is swine flu.

"This Friday at midday the club's medical services informed that Eric Abidal

had swine flu and in the afternoon the tests carried out confirmed that Toure

Yaya was also suffering from it.

"The medical services are working following the protocols established by the

health department isolating the players, carrying out symptomatic treatment and giving appropriate hygienic measures."

Milito makes return

Barcelona defender Gabriel Milito has played his first match in more than 18 months as he continues his recovery from a knee ligament injury.

The 29-year-old played the first half of a 4-1 friendly win over Peruvian side Bolivar on Wednesday morning as part of tentative progress in his rehabilitation.

Milito damaged anterior cruciate ligaments in the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League semi-final second-leg loss at Manchester United.

But the Argentina international is now pleased to have returned to the field, although he has still to set a date for competitive action.

"I had a very good feeling after such a long time out," he told Barca TV .

"I am making very significant progress even though I know I am still locked in the recovery phase.

"I don't know (when I will play a competitive match) but it'll take a while yet."

Puyol could quit Spain

Puyol could quit Spain

Carles Puyol has admitted that he may slip into international retirement after the 2010 World Cup.

The Barcelona defender has been an integral part of the Spanish national side for the last decade.

He has acquired 80 caps since making his debut in November 2000 and tasted European Championship glory in Austria and Switzerland in 2008.

At 31-years-old he admits his body cannot withstand the rigours of domestic and international endeavours for much longer, but insists he will consult with coach Vicente del Bosque and sporting director Fernando Hierro before making any decision regarding his future.

Puyol told Radio Marca : "Is South Africa going to be my last big competition with Spain? It is possible because I am getting older and there are quality replacements ready to fill in.

"My plan is to play at the World Cup and after that hold talks with the coach and Hierro in order to make a choice."

While Puyol's time with Spain may be coming towards a close, he penned a new contract with Barca over the summer which will keep him at Camp Nou until 2013.

The Catalunya native has expressed a desire to play on past that date, claiming that the hard work he puts in on the training ground will help him to prolong his career.

"Physically I am in good shape and every day I work very hard to maintain this level," he said.

Ibrahimovic laid low

Ibrahimovic laid low

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is set to miss Barcelona's trip to Athletic Bilbao on Saturday after suffering another thigh strain.

The Swedish frontman initially damaged his thigh during a Primera Liga contest against Real Mallorca a fortnight ago.

That prevented him from featuring for his country in the latest round of friendly fixtures.

It was hoped that the international break would allow him the opportunity to rest the problematic area and return ready for action when domestic duties resume this weekend.

However, further tests carried out on Thursday have shown that Ibrahimovic has suffered a further injury in the same area.

Barca are now sweating on the fitness of their big summer signing ahead of a testing week for the club.

After Saturday's trip to Bilbao, Pep Guardiola's side face Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday and arch-rivals Real Madrid in El Clasico next Sunday.

Escude out for two weeks

Sevilla defender Julien Escude will be out of action for at least two weeks after suffering a broken nose.

Escude had an operation on the injury after he clashed with a France team-mate during their controversial World Cup qualifying game against the Republic of Ireland on Wednesday.

Despite undergoing surgery, there is no exact date set for Escude's return, and the facial injury could rule him out of a number of games.

He will almost certainly miss Sevilla's next two Primera Liga fixtures against Tenerife and Malaga, as well as the trip to Unirea Urziceni in the UEFA Champions League.

Escude may return on December 6 when the Andalusian side host Valladolid in the Primera Division.

Costa earns new contract

Atletico Madrid have rewarded promising playmaker Diego Costa with an extension to his current contract.

The 21-year-old is yet to make a competitive appearance for the capital giants, with his experience to date gained during a number of loan spells.

Having taken in stints at Sporting Braga and Celta, he spent the entire 2007/08 campaign with Albacete.

Having displayed considerable promise, he was subsequently snapped up by Albacete for the 2008/09 season.

Now deemed ready for life in the top tier of Spanish football, he is currently with Primera Liga outfit Real Valladolid.

Atletico have been impressed by the Brazilian's continued progression and have tied him down on new terms which will run until June 2012.

Matured

Costa is delighted to have penned a new deal and is determined to repay Atletico's faith in his ability.

"I'm really happy because this shows that after a few years away from the club they still have confidence in me," he told the club's official website .

"Atletico have helped my career to develop and I hope to repay that confidence in the future.

"I think I have matured as a player and as a person. I think I have achieved what I set out to do.

"I have grown and Atletico have recognised that with this agreement."

Ronaldo making good progress

Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to return to full training on Friday after undergoing further tests on his troublesome ankle.

Ronaldo has missed Real Madrid's last nine matches and has not been able to play for Portugal in their World Cup play-off against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

However, he has been making steady progress in his recovery and resumed light training earlier this week.

The 24-year-old was examined by Real's medical staff on Tuesday and the Spanish club have now confirmed everything is going according to plan.

Ronaldo will step up his comeback over the next few days but it remains unclear when he might be able to take part in a match.

Real face Racing Santander in the Primera Liga on Saturday before entertaining FC Zurich in the UEFA Champions League four days later.

Barcelona then welcome Real to Camp Nou on 29th November for the first El Clasico of the season.

Toure eyes Barca future

Toure eyes Barca future

Barcelona midfielder Yaya Toure insists he is happy at the club despite speculation over a transfer.

The Ivory Coast star has been linked with a number of clubs in recent weeks, although he recently denied that he wanted to link up with his brother Kolo at Manchester City.

The 26-year-old signed a contract extension with the Catalan club during the summer, but he has found first team opportunities hard to come by so far this season.

But despite speculation of reported interest from Arsenal, Manchester United and Inter Milan, the former Monaco and Olympiakos battler says he is happy to fight for his place at the Nou Camp.

"My future in Barcelona is bright," he told skysports.com .

"It is good to be linked with prestigious clubs but I am fine here in Barcelona for the moment.

"I am not moving unless Barcelona accept an offer, and I know I will not play week in week out."

Toure was part of the Ivory Coast team that secured qualification for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, and he expressed his delight for the Elephants' fans.

"We are happy we finished well," he added. "We wanted to give something back to all those people who love us, and show to our country we are ready for future battles."

Puyol - Robinho not necessary

Puyol - Robinho not necessary

Barcelona skipper Carles Puyol insists the Catalan giants have no need to sign Manchester City playmaker Robinho.

Speculation continues to link the Brazil international with an imminent return to Spain, with Camp Nou his most likely destination.

The 25-year-old frontman only quit the Primera Liga in September 2008, moving to City from Real Madrid in a Ј32.5million switch.

He settled quickly in English football and did not take long to become a firm fans' favourite at Eastlands.

Robinho has, however, struggled with injuries this term and has hinted that he could be prepared to take on a fresh challenge elsewhere.

Comprehensive

Mark Hughes' Blues are now brimming with attacking talent and could easily cover for the loss of their Samba star.

Barcelona, though, are in much the same position, with their squad overloaded with potential match winners.

As a result, Puyol feels Robinho would bring nothing new to Pep Guardiola's side.

He said: "The Brazilian is a great player, but we already have very good players in that position like Thierry Henry and Andres Iniesta, who can also play on the wing.

"I think we have a comprehensive squad."

Van der Vaart wants Real stay

Rafael van der Vaart has quashed rumours he is set to quit Real Madrid for Hamburg by expressing a desire to stay and fight for his place at the Bernabeu.

The Dutchman joined Real from Hamburg in summer 2008 but struggled to make an impact in his first season in Spain.

The 26-year-old was pushed further down the pecking order after the multi-million pound arrivals of Kaka and Xabi Alonso in the summer, prompting many to believe that Van der Vaart would follow fellow Dutchmen Wesley Sneijder, Arjen Robben and Klaas Jan Huntelaar out of the club.

However the former Ajax youngster stayed put and insists any move back to Hamburg is off the agenda for now despite making just two starts in all competitions this season.

"I am going to stay, I will not have a transfer," he told Bild .

"It was not like it should have been in the past but now I am getting to games and believe I will be having a great time at Real Madrid.

"This is nothing against Hamburg, the Hamburg fans or the club. They are still very much part of my heart.

Raul aims to retire at Real

Real Madrid skipper Raul has revealed his ambition to see out his playing days at Santiago Bernabeu.

The legendary frontman, who is Real's all-time leading goalscorer, has spent his entire career to date with the Spanish giants.

He made the breakthrough with Los Blancos as a precociously-gifted teenager back in 1994 and has been an integral part of the club ever since.

At 32, he accepts that his playing days are heading towards a close, but hopes that he will be able to bow out at the top when the day comes to hang up his boots.

"I intend to continue fighting and enjoying the game, so we'll see how long I hold up," Raul told Real's official website .

"My dream was to begin and end here, but circumstances change and decisions sometimes need to be made.

"I think the Real Madrid-Raul relationship is hard to break, so I hope to end my career here."

Right choice

Raul has also leapt to the defence of under-fire coach Manuel Pellegrini, whose credentials have been questioned over recent weeks.

The Chilean has endured a difficult start to life in the Real hot-seat since taking charge over the summer, but his captain insists the players have complete faith in his ability to generate a winning environment.

"Pellegrini knows this league well. He knows what he wants, he likes good football, he likes his teams to maintain possession and he tells us that all the time," added Raul.

"His ideas go hand-in-hand with Real Madrid's and the history of the club. Time will show that Pellegrini is right and he will build a championship team."

Ronaldo back in training

Cristiano Ronaldo has handed Real Madrid a fitness fillip after returning to training for the first time since late September.

The Portuguese forward has been sidelined since suffering an ankle injury against Marseille in the UEFA Champions League on 30th September.

Ronaldo was put through his paces at Real's Valdebebas training complex, taking part in some ball work.

His injury became the subject of controversy earlier this month when Portugal tried to call him up for duty in their World Cup qualification play-off with Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The player ultimately remained with Real, while Portugal won the first leg of the play-off without him.

Maradona warns over Aguero

Maradona warns over Aguero

Argentina coach Diego Maradona says Atletico Madrid must build a team around his son-in-law Sergio Aguero or let him leave.

The 21-year-old striker, who had a son with Maradona's daughter Giannina earlier this year, joined Atletico from Argentine side Independiente in 2006, with his contract running until 2012.

But after finishing fourth in La Liga last term, the side are currently in the relegation zone and already out of the UEFA Champions League.

Maradona now believes the Spanish side must invest or allow the Argentina international to leave.

His comments come as Argentina prepare to take on Spain in a friendly on Saturday - which Aguero is due to sit out because of injury.

Worthy

Maradona told Marca : "To make the best of Aguero's qualities they must create a team worthy of him and sign some players.

"Otherwise they must let him go and not harm his development."

Meanwhile, Maradona has repeated his claim that he rates his own country's Lionel Messi more highly than Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo.

He said Ronaldo "did incredible things with Manchester (United) but Messi wreaks more havoc. The ball is stuck to his foot!"

Fabiano plays down rumours

Sevilla striker Luis Fabiano insists he has no desire to secure a move to England or Italy any time soon.

The Brazilian admits he could be tempted by a fresh challenge in the Premier League or Serie A in the future, but remains committed to his Spanish employers for now.

Fabiano did come close to joining AC Milan over the summer, only for the Italian giants to resolutely refuse to match Sevilla's valuation.

That forced the 29-year-old frontman, who has spent the last four years in Spain, to remain at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

He has responded in the best possible manner, scoring 10 goals in 13 appearances, and claims he is now happy to remain where he is.

"I'm honesty not thinking about the rumours that say I want to leave," Fabiano told Itasportpress .

"I'm doing well here. I'm happy with Sevilla's season because my performances in the league and the Champions League have been positive so far.

"For now, my attentions are focused on Sevilla. In the future, if I can move to Italy or England, I will evaluate it in due course."

Ronaldo close to comeback

Cristiano Ronaldo is confident he can return to full training by the middle of this week after suffering with an ankle injury.

The winger picked up the problem in Real Madrid's 3-0 win over Marseille in the UEFA Champions League at the end of September and has not played for his club since.

Despite concerns for his fitness the 24-year-old turned out for Portugal just a few days later in what was a must-win World Cup qualifier but the former Manchester United star lasted less than half-an-hour and further aggravated the injury.

Ronaldo has been the subject of a high-profile club versus country tug-of-war as questions over his perceived fitness were asked as Portugal prepared for their crucial World Cup play-off encounter with Bosnia before the Ј80million man was eventually ruled out.

"The most important thing for me is to return when I am at 100 per cent," he told AS .

"Let's see what happens but around the middle of this week I am confident I will already be working with my team-mates.

"This week I will have another test to see if I am fit but the recovery is well on track."

If Ronaldo is successful in proving his fitness he could find himself selected for the home game against Racing Santander on Saturday.

Forlan signs new deal

Forlan signs new deal

Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan has signed at new contract that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2013.

The 30-year-old Uruguayan was Europe's most prolific forward last season with 32 league goals, and has been rewarded with a new deal despite the club's poor recent run of form.

Atletico have suffered a terrible start in La Liga, and former manager Abel Resino was replaced last month by Quique Sanchez Flores, with results picking up since the change of personnel.

"I'm very happy with the renewal," he told the club's official website . "I've always said, since I arrived at this club, that I was very happy and that it was my hope to stay at Atletico for many years.

"It's a dream to be able to extend my contract for two more years.

"I'm convinced that we can obtain titles in this time."

Atletico hammered Marbella 6-0 in the Copa Del Rey on Tuesday and drew 2-2 with Chelsea at the beginning of the month - a mark of their improvement under new boss Flores.

However, Los Colchoneros are still languishing in 18th place in the Primera Division, with just seven points from 10 games so far.

"The club and my team-mates and I will do everything possible to win everything possible, although now the most important thing is to get out of the situation that we are in," Forlan added.

"Soon we will be in the places where we should be.

"I'm confident that the improvement will bring good results. Nobody should doubt that we (the players) are the first people who want to turn this situation around."

Atletico duo sign on

Atletico duo sign on

Atletico Madrid have announced two more of their squad have agreed new long-term deals.

Earlier this week Diego Forlan penned his contract, and now Jose Manuel Jurado and Cleber Santana have followed suit.

The midfielders have both extended their stays at the Vicente Calderon, with Jurado agreeing a four-year deal and Cleber a three-year term.

23-year-old Jurado signed for Atletico in 2006 from city rivals Real, and is now a first-team regular after spending last term on loan at Mallorca.

Brazilian Cleber has also this season earned himself a starting role at the club, after also spending last term on loan in Mallorca.

Marquez set to sign on

Marquez set to sign on

Barcelona's Rafael Marquez claims his protracted contract negotiations are close to reaching a conclusion.

The Mexican defender has been in talks with the Catalan giants for some time, without actually signing any paperwork.

It is believed that the length of the terms on offer initially proved to be a sticking point for both parties.

It appears a compromise has been reached, though, as Marquez is ready to commit his future to the reigning European champions.

"The renewal is very close," he told AS .

"It is a matter of finding the time to do so. This is where I'm making my life now and I feel very comfortable, I do not want to change. I have found happiness and contentment."

Satisfaction

Marquez, who has won just about every domestic honour during his time at Camp Nou, has also set his sights on becoming Barcelona's most celebrated foreign star of all-time, surpassing Philip Cocu's total of 292 appearances for the club.

"I do not want to have nothing to show for all my years here," he added, with 227 outings already under his belt.

"We have already achieved important things and I will remember them fondly, and it is a source of satisfaction for me.

"I would like to stay here much longer. I'm waiting for things to happen and hopefully I can reach Cocu's total of games."

Sevilla rule out Fabiano sale

Sevilla rule out Fabiano sale

Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido has stated that he will not be selling Brazilian star Luis Fabiano in the January transfer window.

The 29-year-old striker has attracted the interest of a number of European clubs during his spell at the Spanish side.

AC Milan entered negotiations with Sevilla over the summer and a host of English sides are reportedly expressing an interest in Fabiano.

But Del Nido insists that he has not received a formal approach over a move in January and has now decided not to sell his prize asset.

"Nobody has made an enquiry about Luis Fabiano," the president said.

"Our idea is for him to stay at our club for many years, we have now totally discarded a possible sale in January because we are battling in many competitions and he is needed at the club."

Del Nido refused to say whether Fabiano would possibly be signing a new contract in the New Year, stating that he is not focusing on off-field issues.

He added: "We are not thinking about that at the moment.

"Sevilla has the most competitive team in all its history and with these players we hope to achieve our objectives."

Almeria crash out of cup

Almeria crash out of cup

Almeria saw their Copa del Rey dreams dashed by Second Division outfit Hercules on Thursday.

The Primera Liga side trailed 2-1 from the first leg of their fourth round contest, but fancied their chances of turning the tie around on home soil.

In the end, though, they slipped to an even more convincing defeat, with the visitors snatching a 1-0 win at Estadio del Mediterraneo.

Portuguese midfielder Tiago Gomes was the hero for Hercules as his solitary strike after 76 minutes settled the contest.

A miserable night for Almeria was compounded in stoppage-time when Argentine defender Hernan Pellerano was dismissed after being shown a second yellow card.

Kaka has no regrets

Kaka has no regrets

Real Madrid midfielder Kaka insists he has no regrets after deciding not to move to Manchester City.

The Brazilian maestro was involved in a high-profile transfer saga in January as City were locked in negotiations with Kaka's former club AC Milan, but he opted for a summer move to Los Merengues instead of Eastlands.

City's executive chairman Gary Cook accused Milan of 'bottling' the deal which would have made Kaka the highest-paid player in the world, although he thinks he made the correct decision.

He said: "Do I regret not moving to Manchester City? No. I am happy with what I have chosen in my life.

"I've spoken a lot to Robinho and he is very happy there and Manchester City have bought a lot of quality players.

"But now I am with Real Madrid and very happy with the choice I made. I have no regrets with the decision I made."

Real are currently second in La Liga, only one point behind leaders Barcelona, and the Ј56million signing has scored three goals so far this season.

Meanwhile, Mark Hughes' City side are sixth in the Premier League with 20 points from 11 games, and their next match is a trip to Anfield to play Liverpool.
