The former French international spoke after Villarreal’s impressive 2-1 victory in Numancia put the Yellow Submarines joint 1st in the table after three matches, and Pires hopes to use that display as the blueprint for success against Racing Santander.

“It is good that we have a level of squad where it is difficult to break into the team. Racing Santander will make things complicated for us, but if we play like we did against Numancia, with the quality and patience we had, we can make things easier.”

Pires also said this week was ‘very important’ in terms of the La Liga Championship, and they must avoid losing points wherever possible if they are to maintain their Champions League status next season.
