It’s been a turbulent and testing summer in Valencia, but it finally looks as though the pieces are falling into place. The team looked highly impressive in beating Mallorca on the opening weekend and didn’t disgrace themselves against Real Madrid in the Super Cup, a feat which Unai Emery puts down to one thing: unity.
Speaking today, the recently appointed manager of Los Che said, “When I arrived what I wanted was to be united, so that we all sought the same objectives. We have to have the maximum unity, especially inside the team.
“There we have to be together with unity, ambition, hope and of course with strong ties.”
Four Legs
The former Almeria manager took over earlier this summer and has already seen the change of two presidents and three sporting directors, not that he is too worried. He said, “Now I have a great unity with the sporting vice president, Fernando Gómez Colomer, who I speak with a lot and with the president, Vicente Soriano, who has written the project and with whom I have good communications.”
Certainly, any off-field incidents have not affected the first team so far this season. Emery insists that, in order to be successful, whole 'structure' of the club must be strong, explaining, “It is like a table with four legs. One leg corresponds to the players, another the executives, another the fans and the other the media. If one fails, the structure staggers, but if more fail, then it falls.”
Pride
Despite the strong words, the coach accepted that things may not always be this good and says he's prepared for any rocky roads ahead. “There will be troubles, for which confidence is needed and there will be years in which we will compete with Real Madrid and Barcelona for the League.
“There will be times when we compete with others like Atlético Madrid, Sevilla or Villarreal. Valencia has to be happy in that situation,” he explained calmly.
No doubt these words from Emery will be like music to the ears of the fans after last seasons misery. He further assures them that, above all, he wants them to be proud of their team. He said, “I want the fans to sit down proud and satisfied of their team, to see that they sweat for the shirt and for the ambition.”
