Hugo Sánchez: Barcelona Must Slip Up For Madrid To Win Title

One of the all-time greatest goalscorers and Pichichi winners in La Liga, Hugo ‘Hugol’ Sánchez has made a return to Spanish football as the new coach of modest UD Almería.

After settling in and conducting his first training session with the struggling Andalucian side, the Mexican took some time off to speak to RNE, Radio Nacional de España.

He covered several topics, including his main coaching objective with his new club while also giving his thoughts on his former team, Real Madrid, and their quest for a 32nd La Liga crown.

“At Almería, I want to instil character and determination in the team so they can achieve their goals. I want the players to have discipline, order and speed in their attack,” he said during the interview.

“As a trainer, I have changed. Now, I am more careful with my statements to the press because when I was the head coach of Mexico, my words were often twisted into lies,” the 50-year-old added.

There has already been speculation that Hugo Sánchez is using his stint at Almería as a stepping stone to take over the hot-seat at the Santiago Bernabéu in the near future.

“I do not rule out the possibility of coaching any team in La Liga. But it would be best if Barcelona did not call for me because I would have to say no to them,” he jibed.

Regarding Los Blancos and Barça in this season’s title race, Hugol analysed: “It will be very difficult for Madrid to win the league. For that to happen, Barcelona will have to slip up a lot.

“At Madrid, they do not lack real men. There’s plenty of quality and talent but perhaps they are missing a few reinforcements. But it is not in my place to talk about that,” he concluded.

Hugo Sánchez is the only player in the league’s history, along with Athletic Bilbao’s mythical Telmo Zarra, to score 38 goals in a single season. He has won the Pichichi trophy on five occasions, behind Zarra’s all-time tally of six, but he holds the joint-record of winning it four times in succession, levelled with Alfredo di Stéfano.

Atletico Madrid Offer Luis Garcia To Tottenham

The Daily Mail reports that Atletico Madrid attacker Luis Garcia could be set for a loan switch to Tottenham Hotspur in January.

The Spanish international has struggled to make an impactduring his second spell atthe Vicente Calderon,as the likes of Simao andMaxi Rodriguezare well ahead of him in the pecking order.

Thus, los Colchoneres have offered the former Liverpool favourite to a number of Premier League clubs, including Blackburn Rovers, Middlesbrough and Portsmouth.

But Spurs are thought to be the chief target, as manager Harry Redknapp has made no secret of his desire to recruit a new left-winger during the winter.

The former Pompey boss has been hounding Boro for Stewart Downing, the 24-year-old English international, but the Teesside club remain reluctant to sell one of their high-profile youth products.

And with the Lilywhites' transfer kitty looking rather empty at the minute, a six-month deal for the experienced and wily Garcia may be just the ticket.

Del Nido Hopes For Year Of 'Consolidation' For Sevilla

Sevilla might not have the most expensively assembled squad in La Liga, but the Andalucian side have certainly fought with the best this year, beating both Villarreal and Real Madrid lately.

Despite getting knocked out of the UEFA Cup, president José María Del Nido is still pleased with the year his side have had, and today set out his aims for 2009.

"I hope that next year we can consolidate, as we have done over recent years, to put us up with the biggest teams," he said to AS.

"We are on a good path, we have been through a tricky calendar, we are second, and we are still competing for two trophies.

"We did not achieve an objective, because losing in the UEFA Cup was not foreseen, but it has happened...We must be hopeful, as I look to the future, and not to the past."

Indeed, Sevilla have had a strong finish to the year to leave themselves well positioned for the rest of the season. They still trail leaders Barcelona by ten points though, and Del Nido knows they need the Catalan side to slip up if they are to launch a challenge.

"To win a league, a team that is second level has to do so with 70 or 80 points, not in a championship that is won with 90. If Barça continue as they are, they will finish more than ten points above second," he mused.

The president also admitted that both Real Madrid and Barcelona are way above the rest in terms of economic stature, but said that despite the money, 'no president can promise titles, and one who does is mistaken.'

Del Nido also spoke briefly about the upcoming encounter with Osasuna, saying that they will have to work hard if they are to take all three points against the side bottom of the league.

Barcelona Resume Training Without Messi, Alves, Eto’o

Barcelona have resumed training following the traditional one week break during the Christmas period.

Coach Pep Guardiola re-commenced the session on Monday without numerous key figures. Midfielder Toure Yaya, who has recently dispelled rumours of a move to Arsenal, was missing due to a sore throat.

The likes of Lionel Messi, Dani Alves, Samuel Eto’o, Seydou Keita, Martin Caceres and Gabriel Milito were also absent after the club granted them an extra few days to spend their holidays due the long distances they had to travel back to their respective home countries. They will be expected back at the club on Friday, January 2.

The good news for the Blaugrana, however, was the return of influential midfielder, Andres Iniesta following a two-month injury lay-off.

The 24-year-old trained normally with the rest of the squad and he has now been officially given the green light by the club physios to return to competitive action. The Euro 2008-winner could make his comeback this Saturday when Barca take on Mallorca at the CampNou.

Roma Eyeing Miguel To Replace Cicinho?

To followers of the Italian transfer market, his name will not sound unfamiliar. Luis Miguel Brito Garcia Monteiro, better known by his footballing name Miguel, has often been linked to the biggest Italian clubs in the past.

The last club to show interest in the 28-year-old Valencia winger was Juventus, who were looking to sign a versatile player who could play effortlessly both in midfield and in defence last summer.

Roma coach Luciano Spalletti is looking for the same kind of player for the upcoming January transfer window. The club are following a number of players, for various positions, after a disappointing start to the season.

The Tuscan coach is looking for a player to strengthen the right side of his defence, where Cicinho has never fully convinced. According to Sky Sport, the Brazilian fullback could be on his way out, with the former Benfica man ready to fill the gap.

It must be said, however, that Cicinho has often been linked with a move away from Roma in the recent past. Although he plays frequently, he has given his share of disappointing performances since joining from Real Madrid in the summer of 2007.

Lionel Messi To Play In Argentina Friendly

Lionel Messi has been in sensational form for Barcelona this season as the club have romped to the summit of the Primera Division table.

The diminutive 21-year-old has also welcomed the beginning of the Diego Maradona era as manager of the Argentina national side, and that although he has yet to discuss the level of his involvement in the next fixture versus France, he confirmed that he will be available if called upon.

He told journalists, "I spoke with the coach (Pep Guardiola) about taking part and he understood the situation.

"I knew he would understand because he was sympathetic as a player and he also is as a person."

Barca Agreement

The Catalan club have a mutual understanding with the Argentine FA that Messi may only take part in competitive fixtures in order to avoid the player having to travel long distances and face burnout at such an early stage of his career.

However, with the World Cup qualifying fixtures recommencing in March, Messi wants to be involved in the set up again, hence the reason for his determination to take part.

He also said that no Argentina player would ever wear the light-blue-and-white jersey 'through compromise' but because they 'love the shirt'.

He continued, "Every player in Argentina loves that shirt, and they all want the best. We all know what it means to wear that shirt. None of us are here through compromise."

Maradona will be delighted to have his star player available as he looks to take Argentina to World Cup 2010, despite a disappointing qualifying campaign so far.

Villarreal And Senna Vehemently Deny Manchester City Rumours

In the latest development to the Marcos Senna transfer saga, his representative has denied all the recent quotes attributed to the player, which suggested he would be interested in a move to Manchester City.

Recent reports have suggested that Senna would not be averse to a move to Eastlands, but his representative, Ely Coimbra, said, "The truth is that I cannot understand these quotes. How is it possible that someone can make up statements that say that Senna is interested in Manchester City?

"It is clear that neither Senna, nor I, have spoken with anyone from the English media. It is all outrageous. All Senna is thinking about is continuing with Villarreal."

Coimbra did admit that representatives from Manchester City had contacted him in the past, but according to him, "they called me to ask if Senna would be interested in playing in the Premiership, but we said no thanks."

"Fortunately, Villarreal and I have a great relationship, and they do not believe what is written in the English press. If I received a proposal from Manchester City or any other club, I would immediately call Jose Manuel Llaneza (a club delegate), and he would be the first to know."

For his part, Llaneza his outrage at the statements attributed to him, which first appeared in The Daily Mail, that suggested that he would be willing to negotiate a deal. Speaking about the affair, Llaneza said, "I have not spoken to anyone from The Daily Mail, or Manchester City. I am amazed at what has been published in that newspaper. There is no truth in it."

O’Neill Ready To Reject Real Madrid’s Ashley Young Bid

Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill has insisted he is confident he can keep hold of Ashley Young and is ready to reject any offer that Real Madrid make.

The Villa winger’s impressive performances this season have led to reports that the Spanish giants are willing to try and snare the 23-year-old.

However, according to setanta.com, the Villa boss has denied having any contact with Madrid and insisted they will receive short shrift even if they were willing to offer £25 million.

“We haven’t had a call from Real Madrid at all. Maybe that’s hardly surprising,” admitted O’Neill.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if they did make an inquiry. We are in a position to turn it down if they did make a bid of £25 million.

"I wouldn’t want to be encouraging any bids for any of my players. I think that the players are really enjoying it here.”

The Midlanders are currently on an excellent run and sit fourth in the Premier League, three points above Arsenal.

Yet rather than lose players in the January transfer window, O’Neill insists he is hoping to add to his squad as he aims to bring Champions League football to Villa Park.

“We will be trying to search around to improve the squad,” said the Villa boss. “What we had over the Christmas period wouldn’t be sufficient for us to try and keep going on all fronts.”

Next up for Villa is a trip to the KC Stadium on Tuesday night to face Phil Brown’s Hull City.

Mijatovic On Borrowed Time At Real Madrid?

After the latest bungle considering the Champions League registration of Klaas Jan Huntelaar and Lassana Diarra, Pedja Mijatovic may soon be leaving the Bernabeu for the final time.

There are rumours of discontent among the Real Madrid board, who are far from impressed by the Montenegran's track record during his time at the club. In fact, his only remaining ally appears to be club president Ramon Calderon, because Mijatovic was a key part of his ultimately successful presidential bid. Indeed, Calderon is only likely to turn against Mijatovic in the event of his own head falling on the chopping block.

Apart from the recent debacle, there are three other incidents that count against the sporting director. The most prominent of them is the continued failing of the club to sign a genuine 'crack', despite the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo being promised.

Another failing was the attempted signing of Ricardo Oliveira two years ago. An agreement was in place between Real Madrid and Milan, but Mijatovic did not realise that FIFA rules prohibit a player from playing for more than two clubs in one season, and he had already represented Real Betis.

Finally, the board are concerned that Mijatovic has not yet concluded Bernd Schuster's formal release from the club. Schuster is demanding a €7 million pay-out, but Mijatovic has yet to confirm the deal, thus preventing him from attending to matters of greater urgency.

Barcelona Eager To Renew Key Contracts

Rather than look towards the shopping window, Barcelona's immediate priority in the transfer window is securing contract extensions for more of their key players.

Having already secured the long term futures of Xavi and Sergi Busquets in recent times, not to mention Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta last season, sporting director Txiki Begiristain is now keen to proceed along similar lines with Victor Valdes, Carles Puyol, Rafael Marquez and Samuel Eto'o.

The Blaugrana see these players as part of the spine of the team, and as their contracts expire in June 2010, they are eager to see them put pen to paper on new ones. While in principle there should not be too much of a problem, each case presents unique challenges.

At 26, Barcelona see Victor Valdes as their long term goalkeeper, an attitude that is reflected in his current buy-out clause of €100 million. However, it is understood that the keeper harbours ambitions of a considerably higher salary, and can use the fact that there is no serious competition for his place at the club as a bargaining chip.

Samuel Eto'o is also one for the future, given that he is just 27 years of age, but his situation appears to be the most complicated. First of all, the Cameroonian has indicated that he is not interested in contract talks until the team has run its course in all three competitions. Furthermore, some hard feelings may still linger from the summer, when he was told to pack his bags by the club. What is certain is that there are plenty of European clubs waiting to pounce on any opportunity to sign him.

Rafael Marquez is closing in on 30, and as such is unlikely to be seeking a big money move. In any case, Pep Guardiola regards him as a key figure in organizing the defence, so a slight salary increase may well be in order.

Finally, the club should have no problem in securing the future of club captain Carles Puyol, who has stated his intention to finish his career at the Camp Nou on several occasions. That said, he will still be expecting an improved offer, in light of his years of dedicated service to the club.

Messi Looks Forward To Success With Barcelona

Barcelona might have enjoyed a superb second-half to this year, but it should not be forgotten that 2008 was not all good for the Catalan side.

The current La Liga leaders failed to win any silverware last season, and watched as arch-rivals Real Madrid picked up their second straight league title.

Speaking to Sport.es today, Lionel Messi said that to lose the league was 'hard', but that he is optimistic about the future.

"Right now I believe that we are on the right track, and, if we continue like this, we can achieve many things, with humility," he mused.

"We have desires to work and to grow, but always with the calmness and unity that we feel as a group.

"I expected the team to show that we are capable of this, and also a lot more."

Worryingly for all the other teams in Spain, Barcelona already appear to have La Liga wrapped up, with a ten point lead established following their win over Villarreal.

As always, Messi has been integral to the success of the side, but he believes that he could have been better throughout the year.

"Individually, I believe that I could have done more, but I am not complaining, because I finished the year well," he opined.

"I feel like I am growing with each game, and I know that time will make me more and more mature."

Coaching Change

Aside from the players though, one of the great successes at Barcelona had been Pep Guardiola, who took over as coach at the beginning of the season.

The former player might have lost to Numancia on the opening day, but since then his side have been outstanding. Messi has nothing but praise for him either, saying his quick adaption has not surprised him, then going on to say how he still feels part of the game.

"I believe that he understands us so well because he manages like he was playing with us," he declared.

"Personally he understand me well and he knows what he can give us. He is a player as well as a coach, he knows how to transmit his experience and everything he went through in his time."

In typical Messi style, he also remained remarkably modest, when questioned about claims he has to be the best player on the planet.

"In reality I never worry about that, all I care about is to do the best for my team and to obtain collective titles," he said.

"Individual awards, if they have to come, will come, but I do not worry about them, because I do not seek them.

"I only think about my team, and the prizes that Barcelona can win."

Lastly, Messi had a few words for arch-rivals Real Madrid, who he said are still competitors and will return to challenge quickly.

Negredo Criticises Real Madrid Youth System

Álvaro Negredo might be plying his trade with Almería these days, but the big Spanish striker has not forgotten his roots.

Amidst much talk of Real Madrid's youth system recently, the free-scoring target man spoke to AS today about his former club, and didn't have too many kind words for them.

"There are staff cuts, but that happens in other teams too and still people come up from the youth team," he mused.

"The youth set-up must have work done to it, and at the moment Real Madrid are not doing that."

Negredo has been one of the in-form players in La Liga this season, creating plenty of speculation that he could be line for a national team call-up. However, despite the fact that he sounds like he would want nothing more than to play for Spain, he knows it is a tough road.

"It is the dream of every player to wear the Spanish shirt, that is my main objective, and I hope that some day it will happen," he declared.

"Things are going well, but until my debut I cannot see myself in the team. There are players in front of me, that is clear, but I will keep on trying."

With his rise in form and popularity, there have also been rumours that he could well leave Almería soon to play at a bigger club. Negredo insists that he does not want to leave, although he is interested in the lure of European football.

"I like to watch the Champions League, they are always good [games], and I hope that one day I can play in it," he said.

"I would like to grow in the league. If teams have noticed me that is good, but until the end of the season I do not want to hear anything. The objective now is to continue working and growing.

"I believe that although things are not going well at Almería at the moment, we will continue to improve, and the results will come."

Real Madrid To Beat Manchester City to Santa Cruz Signing?

According to a report in British tabloid the Daily Mirror, Spanish giants Real Madrid are set to make a bid of £18 million (€18.8 million) for Blackburn Rovers forward Roque Santa Cruz.

It was thought that the Paraguayan international striker might change his mind about leaving Ewood Park and hand manager Sam Allardyce a boost by opting to stay.

However, it seems that the lure of playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world plus the chance to compete in the Champions League could tempt Santa Cruz to ask for the opportunity to join Los Blancos.

Manchester City had been touted as favourites to land the 27-year-old if he were to leave with manager Mark Hughes being responsible for bringing him to the Premier League.

But should there be any truth to this fresh rumour, it appears that the former Bayern Munich player could well be on his way to Spain.

Whether it is anything more than mere speculation is questionable, as Real only recently signed Dutch striker Jan Klaas-Huntelaar from Ajax for a similar fee and have identified a winger as top of their priorities.

Casquero Wants Trophy And Spain Call

Javi Casquero has revealed that his dream is to play for Spain before he retires and also wants to help Getafe to go one better than last term and win a trophy.

The 32-year-old midfielder wants to taste life at the highest level and hopes to attract the attention of the Spanish coach, Vicente del Bosque, with an impressive second half to the season.

After leaving Sevilla in 2005, following a five-year stay, Casquero moved to Racing and then on to Getafe, where he has become a regular figure as los Azulones have risen to prominence.

"I want to win a trophy and to play for the national tam. To be an international means playing at the highest level and that is what I want," he told AS.

"It does not add pressure on me though because I do not think about it every day, even though I cannot hide the fact that I would love it."

Michael Laudrup was a fan of Casquero and there were reports that the Dane wanted to take him to Spartak Moscow when he left Geta in the summer, but the nothing ever materialised.

"They told me about it, that there were rumours but I did not think about them. I am really enjoying myself here," Casquero explained.

Last term, Casquero was part of an Getafe team that reached the final of the Copa del Rey, where they lost to Valencia, and the quarter finals of the UEFA Cup, where they went out on away goals to Bayern Munich.

"It would appear to be unrepeatable, but with Getafe you never know and we are always looking to improve and do better," he continued.

"The cup final was great and, above all, the UEFA Cup. It was new for everyone and we all enjoyed ourselves a lot.

"When you see the teams that have gone out at the first stage of the competition this year then you have to value what we did even more."

Lionel Messi is in Argentina, Eidur Gudjohnsen headed north to spend the festive period in Iceland and Dani Alves went back to Brazil to celebrate.

The Spanish league does have a break, but it is in fact just one weekend without games and all the players have to report back a few days before things resume on January 3.

Alves told Barça's official website: "I’ll be spending Christmas in Brazil with my family who I haven’t seen for almost a year," while Samuel Eto'o revealed: "like other Christmases, this year I’ll be with my parents and I’ll be having a good time with my kids like any other Dad would. Merry Christmas to everyone."

Despite having relations in Catalunya, Messi explained that: "I’ll be in Argentina, in my hometown Rosario, with my friends and family as I’ve always done. Plus it’ll be hot, not like here."

Gudjohnsen was the most descriptive as he stated that his children could well benefit from a combination of Icelandic and Catalan traditions and have two celebrations.

"I’m off to Iceland to spend the holidays with my family and kids. I hope to be able to play in the snow up there and see Father Christmas," he said.

"In my country we give our presents on the 24th in the evening, and we don’t have the Spanish tradition of presents at Epiphany, but when we come back to Barcelona I reckon my kids’ll be able to celebrate it as well. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!"

Arango Sceptical Over Mallorca Departure Rumours

Juan Arango remains hot property despite starting the season in sedate fashion for struggling Real Mallorca.

The veteran Venezuelan is said to be on the radar of several English Premier League clubs, not to mention one or two in Spain.

However he told the press yesterday that he's yet to hear of any firm interest, and as such his transfer remains a simple piece of speculation.

"They're rumours - just rumours," he said.

"There are always offers. There was talk of Liverpool and Tottenham in summer, before the start of the season. Now they tell me about Panathinaikos, or another chance to move to England in winter.

"But there is no concrete offer here - there are simply rumours."

As such the experienced Vinotinto international states that he is happy where he is.

"I am with Mallorca," he affirmed, but he was under no illusions as to the difficulties facing the Barralets.

"One can say (our poor form) is down to bad luck, or bad attitude, but in fact it's a little bit of everything.

"The issue regarding the sale of the club affects us, even though we don't want it to. And when this comes together with poor performance we enter a vicious circle that's hard to leave."

To this end it's hardly surprising that he has at least half an eye on a move elsewhere. Panathinaikos could be the destination due to their Champions League challenge.

"That's one of the best competitions in the world, and if I receive offers, they'll be considered," he concluded.

Casillas Hoping For A Memorable 2009 With Real Madrid

After a rather disappointing finish to what was a barnstorming 2008, Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas is hoping that 2009 will be just as memorable, if not more.

Speaking to the club’s official website, ‘San Iker’ took the opportunity to send his well wishes during the holiday period while also looking forward to the new year.

“I want to wish a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everybody, especially those who support us.

“We hope to make 2009 an unforgettable year for all Madridistas,” he beamed.

Casillas enjoyed without doubt the best year of his already illustrious career in 2008 when he guided Real Madrid to their 31st La Liga title. In the process, he went on to claim the Zamora Trophy as the best goalkeeper in the league in the 2007/08 campaign, before captaining Spain to Euro 2008 glory in Austria-Switzerland, the highlight of which – aside from lifting the trophy itself – was his outstanding double save during the penalty shoot-out against Italy in the quarter finals.

His form took a sensational dip over the past few months but he has returned to his best in the last two games of the year, against Barcelona and Valencia, and he will be hoping to pick up where he left off as Madrid kick-start 2009 against Villarreal.

Valencia Set To Sign Defender Dealbert

All the talk about Valencia recently might be relating to mammoth bids for their star players, but there is no sign that Los Che are going to be splashing the cash this winter.

With rumours of financial trouble surrounding the club, they seem more intent on building the squad than adding to it greatly, as shown by their signings so far.

The club have already signed Brazilian Thiago Carleto, and they are now set on adding to the ranks by bringing in Castellón defender, Ángel Dealbert.

Marca reports that the Primera side has agreed a deal with the player and all that remains to be done is the formalities and the finalisation.

Dealbert is regarded as one of the best defenders in Segunda División A, where he plys his trade, and his contract was set to expire next June, leaving him as free agent.

For this reason, Valencia have come in before the summer to snap him up, making sure they sign him rather than another side.

It is not yet known what fee they will pay for the defender, but it can be assumed to be small, and his contract is likely to be on a similar level as Renan and Carleto (approx. $500,000 a year).

The fact that Valencia need another central defender is no sccret, following the injury to Alexis and the loss of Iván Helguera, and this could be more shrewd business from coach Unai Emery.

Pennant Could Still Secure Real Madrid Move - Report

Jermaine Pennant could still become a Real Madrid player in the January transfer window after the Spanish giants made their interest more concrete this week, according to a report.

The Liverpool winger was rumoured to have demanded too much in personal terms when asked about a contract at the Bernabéu and was thought to be considering a move to Wigan Athletic.

Instead, Sky Sports believe that Madrid are still very much in the running and view the former Arsenal wideman as a good candidate to play on the right wing for them due to his asking price.

Los Merengues have already spent €40 million in the winter transfer window on Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Lassana Diarrà and do not want to splash any more big quantities around.

A move for CSKA's Milos Krasic will only materialise if the Russian outfit are prepared to loan the Serbian international first with a view to a permanent move being included.

Even the temporary signing of Krasic would cost Madrid around €1.5m so a €3m bid for Pennant looks appealing, as long as the club believe that he can play regularly and steer clear of injuries.

Liverpool will not stand in the 25-year-old's way as his contract at Anfield runs out in the sumer and he is no longer a part of Rafa Benítez's plans.

Juande Ramos might have come in, but it doesn't look as though Real Madrid are going to be altering their winter spending plan.

Los Blancos have already signed Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Lassana Diarra, and they are now looking to add a midfielder to their squad.

One of those who they have cast their eyes on is CSKA Moscow midfielder, Milos Krasic, who has been one of the stand-out players in the Russian league this season.

With the transfer window approaching rumours have naturally began that Madrid will be moving for him, and today, the player spoke to the Russian press about the interest from Spain.

"Playing at Real Madrid is a dream for all footballers, but at the moment, as far as I know, there has been nothing concrete," he declared.

"There has been contact though, and if there is any more, I am sure that my agent will contact me to let me know."

Krasic is 24-years-old and has played for CSKA since 2004, when he joined from FK Vojvodina.

His improving play with the Moscow side earned him a national team call-up, and he has since come to be regarded as a first-team player.

Villa Is Very Happy At Valencia - Agent

Just a day after Barcelona reportedly had a €35 million offer for David Villa rejected, the player's agent has come out to quash rumours of any move away from Valencia.

Los Che turned down various offers for the player in the summer, mainly from Real Madrid, and even now with Barcelona on the table they seem desperate to not let him go.

According to José Luis Tamargo, the agent for Villa, it is not just the club who want to keep things as they are, but the player too.

"Today one team comes, tomorrow another...What is clear is that whoever comes, they will be welcome," he jested to Marca.

"However, David Villa has a contract with Valencia until 2014, he is very happy and very content here, and only thinks about winning the league, the UEFA Cup and the Copa Del Rey."

Indeed, Valencia have been a revitalised team this year, following the mediocrity of last season, and despite the fact they trail Barcelona by some way, they will still be happy with the way things are going.

Keeping Villa would obviously be a major step to continuing their success, and Tamargo admitted that the club are unlikely to let him go, whatever the offer.

"For that price [€35 million], Valencia will not sell Villa, in fact, I do not believe that they will sell him," he declared.

"The people of Valencia can be relaxed, knowing that Villa will be with them."

Barca's Offer For Villa Rejected

Barcelona might have already won La Liga according to some commentators, but the Catalan side still seem intent on strengthening their team.

According to Marca the club are chasing Valencia striker David Villa and had a €35 million offer rejected for him today.

The paper reports that Barcelona have been in contact with president Vicente Soriano, but have seen the initial offer rejected, with further news that they will not even negotiate for anything below €40 million.

'El Guaje' has become one of the most highly-rated forwards in Spain at Valencia and it is no surprise that Barcelona want to add his talents to their front-line.

However, Valencia are known to be reluctant to sell their star player and any offer that sees him leave would have to be substantial.

Besides his talent and skill, another reason that Barcelona apparently want to sign him is to put some pressure on Samuel Eto'o to sign a new contract.

The Cameroonian seems adamant that he will not sign until next summer, when he will have just a year left on his deal, but should Villa join that could well change.

Along with that factor they would also have the knowledge that they have taken a target away from Real Madrid, who tried to sign him in the summer but were rejected.

Los Blancos reportedly offered slightly over the €40 million mark, so if Barcelona are serious about adding Villa to their armoury, they may well make him their only signing this winter.

Spain-Portugal Confirm 2018 World Cup Bid

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has made a formal presentation to confirm their candidacy to host the 2018 World Cup Finals jointly with Portugal.

Spain had been in talks with their Iberian neighbours over the past several months to launch a bid to organise the event but on Tuesday, the application was made official.

“The board have finalised the formal tender for Spain’s candidature to organise the 2018 World Cup to be held jointly with Portugal,” read an official RFEF statement.

FIFA’s Executive Committee decided last weekend in Tokyo that they would accept applications simultaneously for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, and the nation(s) that missed out on the 2018 edition can automatically apply for the subsequent event, provided they are not from the same continent.

The other confirmed candidates so far for 2018 include Belgium/Holland, Australia, England, Qatar and Russia, while those who have only expressed their interest include the United States, Mexico, Canada, China and Japan.

FIFA will accept submissions until January 2009 and the winners will be announced in December 2010.

Sneijder: Real Madrid Can Still Win The League

A win against Valencia might have boosted the morale at Real Madrid, but there is no doubt that Los Blancos are still a club in trouble.

The defending La Liga champions are currently twelve points off the pace in Spain, and face a tough task against Liverpool in the Champions League.

Nevertheless, midfield maestro Wesley Sneijder still believes that they can go on to do big things this season.

"The season is very long and all the teams go through bad patches in play and in results," he mused.

"Last year we also had bad patches of play and we overcame them, but I do not believe it is alarming. We are still fighting for large objectives and want to finish the season well.

"Now we have to all fight together to the end, and if we are not capable of playing good football, we will have to find other ways to win."

Despite the fighting talk though, there is no doubt the champions face a tough task in chasing down Barcelona, following a rocky period in their season that has included losses to Sevilla and Getafe.

Sneijder understands why the fans have been upset at their recent form, but his words reflect the desire in the camp to put things right.

"It is normal that the fans are annoyed with this situation, because we are Real Madrid and they expect a lot from us," he declared.

"Now, more than ever, is the time to be united, to handle the situation well and to recover our state. It is time for unity and not individuals...I believe this team has the quality to be champions, and the environment in the dressing room is very good."

The Dutch international was short on praise for Barcelona, only saying that they are a 'very good team, who are playing fantastic football', before reiterating his remark that the season is long, and all teams will enter a bad patch.

Arsenal Lose Cesc Fabregas For Three Months

Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregasis set tospend the next three months on the sidelines after injuring his knee in Sunday's clash with Liverpool.

The Spanish sensationhobbledout of the gameat half-time after coming offsecond bestin a 50-50 challenge with compatriot Xabi Alonso, forcing Arsene Wenger tosend onAbou Diaby for the remainder of the 1-1 draw.

It was confirmed shortly afterwards that the 21-year-old midfielder haddamaged themedial ligaments of his right knee, and hehas beenscheduled for a series of scans throughout the week.

Initial examinations have highlighted the severity of the injury, and thefindings at this point are far fromencouraging for Fabregas or the Gunners.

Anunnamed sourcesaid inThe Sun: "He has been told he will not be available until the end of March, which means he will miss the next round of the Champions League and a number of crucial Premier League matches."

That prognosis could become even grimmer ifFabregas is forced to undergo surgery, and it thought that the EURO 2008 winner is expecting the worst.

Further tests will be conducted this evening.

Sinama-Pongolle: Atletico Will Fight For All Three Titles

After years of disappointment and false hope, Atletico Madrid are on track for one of their more successful campaigns in a long while.

They are currently sitting in third spot in the Primera Division ladder and they are also in the last 16 of the Champions League, where they will meet FC Porto in the first knockout round. They have a slightly more arduous task in the Copa del Rey having been pitted against Barcelona in the next phase but striker, Florent Sinama-Pongolle is confident that Los Colchoneros can challenge for all three titles.

“We have options to win La Liga, the Champions League and the Copa and we want to fight in all three competitions,” he was quoted as saying by AS.

“But our objective for 2009 is to simply continue what we have been doing until now and overcome all our difficult games with tranquillity and confidence. That is the key,” he added.

As for his own personal goal, the Frenchman offered: “When I get my chance to play, I’ll make the most of it.

“I have been working well on my own as well as with the rest of the group. Physically, I’m at a good level and I’m satisfied with my performances.

“I would’ve liked more minutes on the pitch but that does not bother me.”

Finally, the 24-year-old urged his team to put the humiliating 6-1 mauling by Barca behind them when the two sides go head to head again in the Copa.

“It is necessary to forget about that one game and try to beat Barcelona this time and win back our pride,” he concluded.

Diarra Will Make Real Madrid Better - Metgod

Lassana Diarra has been touted as a great signing for Real Madrid by his former coach at Portsmouth, John Metgod.

The Dutchman joined Tony Adams' backroom team in November and has subsequently worked at closed quarters with the French midfielder.

Metgod is also acquainted with life in the Bernabeu pressure-cooker, having spent two years as a player for los Meremgues in the 1980s.

He believes that Diarra will not simply be a replacement for his Malian namesake, Mahamadou, but will add a new dimension to an already star-studded midfield.

Metgod told AS: "The Diarra of Madrid is a very strong guy. Lassana is very small and plays the ball well.

"He passes well both long and short and has very good vision. He is very intelligent and knows very well how he has to play.

"He is very technical. He uses the ball very well and he doesn't lose it much. He is going to be the player who remains very close to the centre-backs.

"Him, next to Sneijder and Guti, will form a great central midfield.

"Madrid have not made a mistake with him, although you have to recognise that he is not like Van der Vaart or Sneijder, who are always looking to score."

Mallorca And Sevilla In No-Score Bore

Real Mallorca 0-0 Sevilla

Sevilla travelled to islanders Real Mallorca desperate to consign their shock Uefa Cup exit at the hands of Sampdoria to history, and continue their impressive recent domestic form. Diego Capel was given a start by Manolo Jiminez on the left hand side, while Luis Fabiano continued through the centre in the absence of Freddie Kanoute who was able to take a place on the bench.

Mallorca over the years have been notoriously difficult to beat at the ONO Estadi, and it is their home form that is keeping them just above the relegation places this season. They started the match in a typically positive fashion, but were unable to truly test Palop, who was simply outstanding for the Rojiblancos in Italy on Thursday.

In fact it was the visitors who had the clearest opportunity of the opening exchanges – and what an opportunity it was. Jesus Navas brilliant drove down the right, and whipped in a dream of a cross into the six yard area. But Capel managed to impede his team-mate Fabiano by inadvertently jumping into him as he headed at goal. Fabiano’s effort smashed against the crossbar, but if it had not been for the presence of Capel, he would almost certainly given Sevilla the lead. The look of disgust he directed at the young Spaniard summed up his feelings.

But aside from that chance, there was precious little quality on show in what was a somewhat subdued opening 45 minutes.

The second half didn’t get much better – Mallorca perhaps were the more positive but rarely managed to make Palop work. There was a great deal of huff and puff, but precious little incisive play as Sevilla’s European hangover appeared to have followed them back from Genoa.

Around the sixty-five minute mark, the Andalusia club woke briefly from their slumber, as the ever-impressive Navas once more swung in a teasing cross, and this time midfielder Romaric unleashed a vicious volley that German Lux did well to tip over for a corner.

But that, quite literally, was it - you will need to go a long way to see a poorer ninety minutes in the Primera Division this season.

Real Mallorca: Lux, Ramis, Nunes, Corrales, Josemi, Suarez, Marti, Aduriz (Webo 83'), Scaloni (Keita 70'), Varela, Juan Arango

Sevilla: Palop, Escude, Squillaci, Navarro, Crespo, Romaric (Adriano 80'), Duscher (Fazio 90'), Renato, Navas, Capel (Kanoute 60'), Fabiano

Barcelona Fight Back To Beat Villarreal

Barcelona deservedly took the victory with them into the New Year, as although Villarreal put up a fight the Camp Nou outfit were clearly the better side on the day.

Indeed, not until Gerard Pique's sending-off midway through the second half did Barcelona look like surrendering their hard-fought lead, and even then some unusually wasteful finishing from the hosts put paid to that idea.

After this win Barcelona have stretched their lead at the top of the Primera to eleven points, while the Madrigal outfit have sunk to sixth with 29.

Still, Villarreal perhaps started the better side as they strung together some fine passing moves through the middle, but Barcelona were first to threaten.

Thierry Henry, taking advantage of some good possession play from Samuel Eto'o, fired wide thirteen minutes in as the Villarreal defence struggled to close him down.

At the other end Villarreal were more often than not being caught out by Villarreal's offside trap, but on one occasion this failed: Carles Puyol failed to play Rossi offside and thus the Italian was clean through, but with just Valdes to beat the former Manchester United man rolled his shot inches wide.

Villarreal had no offside trap of their own, opting to defend deep instead. Thus Barcelona won a corner 28 minutes in that so nearly resulted in a goal. The set-piece itself wasn't too impressive, but young Sergi Busquets seized on a clearance and volleyed from outside the area, bringing out an incredible save in Diego Lopez.

With the Yellow Submarine still struggling to clear their lines Messi was next to enjoy a fine chance, but the Argentinean uncharacteristically fluffed his shot when given a chance on a plate by the impressive Thiery Henry, who had dispossesed Angel out on the left.

Samuel Eto'o came into the game towards the end of the half to free Henry again, but by this time the Frenchman was being closed down more effectively and thus the opening period ended goalless.

Still, just two minutes after the break Villarreal had taken an unlikely lead. Giuseppe Rossi turned provider to make up for his earlier error by chipping masterfully over the defence for the bustling Cani, who made no mistake when one-on-one with Victor Valdes.

But less than ten minutes after that Dani Alves showed his worth with a superb cross for Seydou Keita to put in an absurdly brave header and level the scores.

It was clear that the Blaugrana were loaded with belief and desire, and as such it was no surprise when they took the lead. The on-form Thierry Henry was the man of the moment as he effortlessly side-footed past Diego Lopez following Xavi's neat cross.

Villarreal were utterly out of it by this point but they were thrown a lifeline with just over fifteen minutes to go as Gerard Pique was judged by referee Clos Gomez to have led with an elbow against substitute Guille Franco. It was a harsh decision at first glance but the referee stood by it.

With Nihat and Franco both on the pitch Villarreal were clearly looking to rescue a point, but Barcelona were still in the ascendancy. Still, Clos Gomez was to infuriate them yet again as what looked to be a clear penalty following Gonzalo's apparent foul on Eto'o was denied.

Villarreal, perhaps buoyed by that piece of luck, came forward in earnest in the last ten minutes. First Pires threw away a superb chance with eight minutes left to go and then Guille Franco panicked when one-on-one with Valdes and hit his shot well off target.

The yellow cards were still coming thick and fast from an increasingly bewildered Clos Gomez, who at least got one thing right in adding no fewer than five minutes of stoppage time.

But as the 90th minute came and went Villarreal's winning spark had faded away as reality kicked in - Nihat's awful miss in the 91st minute and another from Guille Franco in the 92nd confirming this - and 1-2 it ended.

Juan Lopez Muniz: Malaga Draw Was Fair

Racing Santander required lifting today as their agonizing Uefa Cup exit on goal difference on Thursday night would have still playing in the minds of the players.

Their 3-1 victory over Mancehster City just wasn't enough, and today against Malaga their display was lacklustre as they they stumbled to their second consecutive home draw.

Full back Valera secured a point after Racing went behind, and Muniz was happy to escape with a point gained.

He said, "I am not sure if this is a good or bad outcome. After the efforts of Thursday night we lacked rhythm today."

Muniz' press conference focused mainly on the second half substitution of Juanjo, who was replaced by Edu Bedia rather that crowd favourite Goncalves, a decision that was met by a chorus of jeers from the home support, due to this but also because he refused to make another change until the end of the match

Muniz defended his substitution policy, stating, "At that time we needed support and encouragement from the terraces and the crowd. We didn't get it."

Racing have won just one of their last six Primera Division matches, and have slipped into 13th position in the league table.

Player Ratings: Real Madrid 1-0 Valencia

Real Madrid

Iker Casillas - 8 - Didn't have too many saves to make, but did well when called upon. St. Iker looks to be regaining his form...

Michel Salgado - 7 - A decent game, but, like last week, his ageing legs became a liability as the game wore on.

Christoph Metzelder - 8 - Was well-positioned throughout, and made some excellent saving tackles.

Fabio Cannavaro - 8 - A good performance, shackled Villa for most of the match and did not commit any unnecessary fouls.

Marcelo - 7 - Was often beaten for pace by Joaquin, but most would be by a man of that speed. Reined in his attacking instincts well, which has been a problem in the past.

Arjen Robben - 8 - Was brilliant at times, running past people at will and setting others up, as on the goal. On other occasions, he was too selfish, choosing to shoot when others were wide open. Also indulged in a dreadful act of play-acting to get Marchena sent off.

Guti - 7 - Another game in which he went from the sublime to the ridiculous. Some magnificent through-balls, but also some shocking misses.

Fernando Gago - 8 - Had a good game, not allowing Valencia's midfield too much space to operate, as well as helping out in defence when needed.

Royston Drenthe - 6 - A fairly quiet first half in which he did not find much space, and was duly replaced.

Rafael Van Der Vaart - 7 - Was unlucky to hit the post, and combined well with Robben on occasions, but drifted out of the game too often.

Gonzalo Higuain - 8 - Scored an excellent goal early on, and while his finishing after that left something to be desired, he was a constant nuisance for the Valencia defence.

Subs

Raul - 6 - Came on at half-time and did nothing spectacular, but held the ball up well when required.

Palanca - 7 - Looked lively after coming on, and his night will be remembered for the relentless gushing of blood from his head.

Miguel Torres - 7 - Was not on for long, but did well to keep Joaquin in check for the final minutes.

Valencia

Renan - 7 - Could not do much about the goal, and saved well when he was called upon. One horrific throw though, which should have been punished.

Miguel - 7 - Was fairly threatening going forward, but sometimes gave the ball away needlessly in the final third. Had a decent game defensively.

Carlos Marchena - 5 - Was lucky not be sent off for a foul on Salgado earlier on. Committed errors throughout the game and was a liability.

Raul Albiol - 6 - Was partially to blame for the incredible amount of space afforded to Real Madrid's forwards all too often.

Asier Del Horno - 4 - Another shocking performance from the man who, not so long ago, was considered to be among the best left-backs in the world. Was absolutely destroyed by Robben.

Manuel Fernandes - 6 - Showed some good touches to maintain control, but wasted many attacking openings with wayward shots when passing would have been a better option.

David Albelda - 6 - An unspectacular game, hardly ventured forward, and was not his usual destructive self in midfield.

Joaquin - 7 - Had an excellent first half, running past Marcelo at will and crossing dangerously. But almost disappeared completely in the second.

Ruben Baraja - 6 - Didn't do much for the whole game, but should have done better with a header that was well saved by Casillas.

Juan Mata - 7 - Was fairly lively and created good space for himself, but was sorely lacking the killer final ball.

David Villa - 6 - Not one of his best games by any means. Wasted a few chances, including one which you would normally bank your house on him scoring.

Subs

David Silva - 5 - Came on after 60 minutes and was expected to make an impact, but hardly even touched the ball, and did not look completely match fit.

Hedwiges Maduro - 6 - Replaced Del Horno, and while he was an improvement in defence, still allowed the opposition far too much space.

Vicente - 5 - Didn't have much time to make an impact, but wasted a few set-pieces with poor deliveries.

Player Ratings: Espanyol 2-3 Atletico de Madrid

ESPANYOL

Kameni 5.5 - Not much he could have done about either Atlético goal and he made one good save from Pongolle, but also showed some nervy moments.

Sergio Sánchez 5.5 - Took his goal superbly as he chested the ball down and showed a striker's touch to draw the hosts level.

Jarque 5 - Was taken on an exposed on occasion and could have done better to deny Agüero for the winning goal as the ball could and should have been cleared.

Pareja 5.5 - Better than his partner at the back because he looked assured pushing up with some good passes, but was still not totally secure in defence.

Chica 6 - Showed that he is a player that can put his foot on the ball and provide the vision that could prove useful when Espanyol play decent strikers.

Ángel 5.5 - Did an effective job in front of the back four, but Mané decided that he wanted something different and withdrew the hard-working local player.

Moisés Hurtado 5.5 - Joined Ángel in front of the defence and he too looked effective for long periods only to not perform at crucial times.

Luis García 6 - Some classy touches were not enough and the forward should have been more involved than he ended up being.

Coro 5.5 - Was employed to play just behind Callejón but did not supply the front man with many good balls from which to test the keeper.

Nené 6 - Could have been the matchwinner had he involved himself more and some of his shots had Leo Franco having to be on form.

Callejón 4.5 - Flattered to deceive and is certainly no replacement for the injured Raúl Tamudo as a lone front-man.

Subs:

Smiljanic 5 - Was unable to have much of an influence when he came on and will be hoping for a longer run after the festive break.

Jonatan 5 - He too could not affect the match, but must believe that he could replaced Tamudo rather than Callejón.

ATLÉTICO

Leo Franco 6 - Did not have to make any spectacular saves, but he showed safe hands when making punches and keeping out some long-range efforts.

Perea 6.5 - Will have been pleased that not a lot more came his way, but he looked more settled than his partner.

Pablo 5.5 - Showed some nerves early on and never really looked settled and his confidence will have to increase as the season progresses.

Heitinga 5.5 - Not convincing either and if Espanyol had more about them then they could have exploited the Dutchman more.

Pernía 6 - Did not stop everything that came his way, but showed enough to ensure thatnone of his oversights led to any problems.

Assunçao 6.5 - Looked calm and in control when he had the ball and laid it off and found team-mates with assurity.

Maniche 6.5 - Could well have ended up with a couple of goals himself, but will have been happy with an good performance in the midfield.

Maxi 7.5 - Took his goal well and showed some very good toches going forward when Atleti needed to take the pressure off their defence.

Simão 6 - Showed glimpses of his ability, but did not test the full-back as much as he should have and will be looking forward to the Christmas break.

Forlán 5.5 - Worked hard but did not really help Agüero in an unusally quiet display from the Uruguayan and he was taken off.

Agüero 7.5 - The tenacity and perseverance he showed for the second Atleti goal proved why he is so highly rated and he could have netted before that.

Subs:

Pongolle 6.5 - Could have scored and then provided a superb pass for the third goal; could have done little more after coming on.

Raúl García 6 - A calming influence in the midfield as he sat in the centre to prevent Espanyol from being able to make a comeback.

Luis García - 5 - Did not have enough time to do anything incredible and will also want more minutes after the break to prove himself.

Valencia defender Miguel was disheartened following his side's 1-0 loss to Real Madrid, but conceded that they only had themselves to blame.

He continued to analyze the game, saying "We lost in the first 10 minutes. But then we improved and we even had chances with only 10 men. "

David Villa Proud To Remain With Valencia

Speaking at the launch of his official website, David Villa remarked that he was in no hurry to leave his current club, Valencia, despite constant rumours linking him with the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester City.

The €127 million price tag slapped on him by the Mestalla top brass may have played a part, but the striker nonetheless seemed more than happy with his current lot.

"I am pleased to be here and for now things are going well for me," he said. "I am proud to stay at Valencia."

David Silva, his team-mate, is another one who has been linked with an exit, quite possibly to the Bernabeu. But the Asturian denied that his Canarian colleague was on the way out - for now, at least.

"Silva will play in the 15th matchday against Real Madrid tomorrow," he said.

"That match is an important one for us because we can achieve something more than our 2008 target, which was to end the year with 30 points.

"What's more, we have the chance to hold on to second place."

Europe, too, was on the forward's mind as he was questioned about Valencia's UEFA Cup meeting with Dynamo Kyiv.

"They will be a tough rival because they entered this competition via the Champions League, and also because it's very difficult for us to play in Kiev," he warned.

"But still, we need to knock them out if we want to progress in the UEFA Cup."

Seventh Heaven

Villa's website has the number '7' in pride of place in its address, leading some in the press to question whether or not he's tempting fate: currently the striker wears this number for Spain but such matters are always open to change.

But David said, "I'll always have this question around me, even if I manage 2,000 goals or get called up to every single squad!

"I am the '7' firstly because I am going to be called up that way and secondly because I'm allowed to be. On the day that I'm not called up, it'll be someone else."

Marcos Senna Content With Villarreal-Panathinaikos Pairing

Yesterday’s Champions League knockout round draw in Nyon threw up some intriguing battles between some of Europe’s superpowers but two teams who managed to avoid the continental big guns were Villarreal and Panathinaikos.

Instead, they found themselves paired against each other and there have been little complaints from either camp. Yellow Submarine captain, Marcos Senna, for one, was happy with the tie.

“Panathinaikos are a team who have played a lot in European competitions, but they are at their best at the moment after finishing first in Group B, which was a very complicated group,” he was quoted as saying by Marca.

“They are an accessible rival, although at this point, all the opponents are difficult,” he added.

The midfielder then went on to admit that he is slightly disappointed not to have home advantage in the crucial second leg.

“Our coach [Manuel Pellegrini] prefers to play the first leg away and the second leg at home, but it is not possible to get everything our way. We have a lot of time to analyse our opponents because we do not have too many matches to play in the next few months.

“What is clear is that we cannot rely on anyone else. What we must do is focus on ourselves and ensure we make it to the quarter-finals. Anything else and it will be a disappointment for all of us,” he concluded.

Ramon Calderon: I'm Tired Of Real Madrid-Ronaldo Rumours

Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has made his first comments on Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson's inflammatory statement that he would never allow Ronaldo to leave for the Real Madrid 'mob' and that he wouldn't sell them "a virus", let alone a player.

Calderon was surprisingly restrained in his response, though he did make sure to take some thinly-veiled barbs at their increasingly bitter European rivals.

"It is absolutely false that there exists any agreement with Manchester United about this business, of which I am tired. The matter is totally dead and as such I don't want to talk about it anymore," he said reacting to the fresh rumours that the Portuguese phenom has already reached an agreement with the Spanish capital club.

Specifically on Ferguson's comments he said: "Our club's code of conduct does not include insults, contempt, or a lack of respect to our opponents. Maybe for this reason Real Madrid are respected in all corners of the world.

"It is sad that a professional with the career of Mr Ferguson can make declarations like these, in addition to some of the other unfortunate things he has said in the last few months.

"Despite that, Real Madrid will never respond with a lack of respect to Manchester United, to any of their directors, nor of course to their fans, for whom everyone has the greatest of respect."

Now Atlético Madrid Can Fight For Their Objective - Raúl García

Atlético Madrid approach the Christmas period in the knowledge that if they beat Espanyol on Saturday evening they will leapfrog Villarreal and move into the Champions League places.

It seems like a long time ago that they were getting thrashed by Barcelona and losing to Sevilla, and today, midfielder Raúl García spoke about their turn around.

"People considered us to be dead and now we are in a position to compete for the four places that we want," he declared to Marca.

"Our goal is to finish in the Champions League positions and it is not important to us if Real Madrid finish below or above us."

Atlético overtaking Real Madrid in the league might not matter to the players, but it certainly does to the fans, who will be keeping an eye on the Champions League draw tomorrow. After finishing runners-up in their group, Atlético could face some tough teams, and Raúl García is hopeful they get someone reasonable.

"What we want is to get through the next round. If we get an easy team it does not mean we will qualify, but I hope that we can be lucky and face a side where we will have options," he mused.

Along with the Champions League, Atlético have another competition to worry about as they face Barcelona in the Copa Del Rey. Spanish midfielder García spoke briefly about that match today, and was questioned about the previous humiliation they suffered at the hands of the Catalan side.

"If we go thinking about what they are able to do, then we would not believe in ourselves," he responded.

"It is clear they have a high level, but there are teams that have gone there and have been capable of standing up to them."

Sampdoria defied the odds and defeated a Spanish side, for the first time in their history earlier tonight, to book their spot in the last 32 of this season’s UEFA Cup competition.

The damage was done on 75 minutes, when Reto Ziegler’s teasing ball into the area was met by Jonathan Bottinelli, who having only just come on to the pitch managed to score the decisive goal.

That was enough for Samp; as they went on to record an impressive 1-0 victory, knocking out the 2006 and 2007 Champions in the process.

At the completion of the match, the captain of the Blucerchiati, Antonio Cassano, spoke to Sky to express his delight at having stunned the Spanish side, and progressing further in the competition.

“We deserved to qualify, thanks to the sacrifices we have made along the way,” Cassano declared.

“Tonight we wrote another chapter in the history of the club, because it has been 16 years since we have managed to get this far in Europe.

“Now let’s hope that we can sign some new players in January, to ensure that we become stronger, for the next phase of the competition,” he added.

The captain made a final comment regarding his future with the Azzurri, by claiming that, “The National team? For me, it is a closed chapter.”

Cassano’s men face Fiorentina at home in the league this weekend, in the final match of the calendar year, and so they will be keen to end the year on a high with a win.

Ronaldo 'Very Happy' At Manchester United

As the rumour mill continues to grind out stories linking Cristiano Ronaldo with a move away from Manchester United, the player has spoken out about how he is more than willing to remain at Old Trafford.

Real Madrid spent a fruitless summer trying to capture the Portuguese superstar's signature, and, even though they were unsuccessful in their pursuit, the Bernabeu would still seem the most likely destination for Ronaldo should he decide to leave the North-West of England.

Alex Ferguson has added fuel to the fire by highlighting theMadrid giants' links with the fascist Franco regime in Spain recently. He also went on to declare todaythat he would never allow Ronaldo to leave forthe Real Madrid 'mob' and that he wouldn't sell them "a virus", let alone a player.

Madrid for their part feel that Ronaldo is already as good as theirs, with Real director Pedro Trapote recently quoted as claiming that theSpaniards already have a deal in place to sign Ronaldo.

Now theBallon D'Or winnerhimself has spoken, and has reiterated that he is focusing on his career with the Red Devils.

"I don't care what people are saying," said Ronaldo today.

"I have not read it. I am here in Japan and I know nothing about what is going on around me.

"But I am very happy playing for Manchester United."

The soap opera surrounding the player's future looks set to run and run, as Real Madrid's irresistible force collides with the immovable object that is Manchester United.

OFFICIAL: Real Madrid Recall Dani Parejo

Real Madrid coach, Juande Ramos, has signalled his intent this evening by recalling Dani Parejo from his loan spell at Queens Park Rangers.

The former Sevilla coach has been rumoured to be wanting to make better use of the youngsters at Real Madrid and this is a clear sign that he intends to do just that.

Parejo, who went out on loan to QPR this summer, has found regular playing time hard to come by and will rejoin the defending La Liga champions as soon as tomorrow for training, reports Marca.

With Rubén De La Red out for the season it is thought that Parejo will occupy his place in the side, which is in the middle of the pitch.

Along with Parejo it seems like Lassana Diarra will be joining Los Blancos soon, so Ramos should have no shortage of midfielders.

The 19-year-old has effectively become the second signing of the winter for Real Madrid, behind Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, but he has not cost them anything.

Parejo is known to want to succeed at Madrid and this move will probably please him greatly, especially if he does get regular playing time with the La Liga side.

Real Madrid currently sit sixth in the table and face Valencia this weekend in a game which will determine their position heading into the Christmas break.

Athletic Bilbao's Gurpegi Happy With 'Just' A Broken Nose

Whilst a broken nose might not often be considered a blessing in sport, it certainly is for Carlos Gurpegi, the Athletic Bibao forward who was knocked unconscious after a clash with Iván Cuellar the weekend.

The collision has left Cuellar with an injury that means he is out for four months, and speaking to AS today, Gurpegi says he is happy with his own injuries.

"When I saw those images on Monday they had an impact, especially when I am on the ground and was having convulsions," he declared.

"It all comes into your head and therefore to be here and to only have a broken nose in plaster makes me very happy and I give thanks."

Gurpegi was speaking to the press with a large plaster cast over his nose and cheekbones, and he explained exactly what he remembered, or didn't, from the incident.

"I continued to watch the ball [from the free-kick] and, the next thing I remember, I was in the dressing room. What happened to me on the pitch I do not know," he mused.

The incident came right at the end of the match, which Athletic won 3-0, and Gurpegi said today that he hopes to speak to Cuellar this week and to be able to 'give him a hug' in the return match at El Molinón.

It is not known exactly how long he will be out for, but the player was optimistic today as he predicted he could be in the squad for the Espanyol game after Christmas.

He also thanked everyone for all their support, especially the coach of Sporting Gijón, Manolo Preciado, who he said "took the time to approach the stretcher and talk to him, and that is something that is big."

Arteta Hails Everton 'Spirit'

Mikel Arteta is looking for Everton to enjoy a productive Christmas and begin their push for European qualification in earnest.

Although lacking consistency so far this season, Everton in recent weeks have begun to show the heart and fight that have characterised their successful league campaigns in recent seasons.

Their win against Manchester City at the weekend typified the rediscovered belief that is beginning to flow through the Toffees' players again. Everton were forced to play Australian midfielder Tim Cahill as a lone centre-forward due to aninjury crisismeaning that no fit strikers were available to manager David Moyes.

Cahill scored in the dying seconds of the game to secure an inspiring victory and put Everton into seventh place in the table, only five points behind Arsenal in fifth and two behind Hull City in sixth.

And Arteta is confident that now the Merseysiders will put their stuttering start behind them and surge on to challenge for a European place once again.

"I think we had the same performance as against Aston Villa, but we didn’t make any mistakes," said Arteta of the victory. "We controlled the game, played well and created chances.

"I think we deserved to win. We were so happy in the dressing room. The reaction this season has been terrific. Every time we’ve had a bad game we have reacted as nobody could expect."

The midfielder also praised those players who'd had to fill in up front, Tim Cahill in particular.

"We played great football and then we scored in the last minute. It was beautiful! We have been so unlucky with injuries through the season, especially to key players.

"We showed great spirit with Tim (Cahill) up front and Felli (Marouane Fellaini)behind. We are still in the mix. That was a really important game because we could have ended up losing three or four positions.

"As it is, we remain close to the top six so hopefully we can keep going and have a good result against Chelsea [on Monday]."

Arteta's own form has improved recently after he was switched from playing on the flanks to a more central role, and manager David Moyes is backing him to maintain hiscurrent good progress.

"Mikel was terrific,"Moyes explained."Everyone knows his skill but all round he was good, in the way he defended and stuck with people.

"His talent is unquestionable. I’ve got no doubts the consistency will return. Mikel has been very good for us over the years and he’s trying to get back to the standards he’s set."
