Ike Casillas: My Worst Start At Real Madrid

Just a few months ago, Real Madrid shot-stopper was on top of the world. After helping Los Merengues clinch their 31st La Liga title last term and guiding Spain to the Euro 2008 crown in the summer with a series of imperious displays, he was then touted as a favourite to become the first goalkeeper since Lev Yashin to win the Ballon d’Or.

But things have gone pear shape since for the 27 year old. As Madrid’s defence become more and more porous, Casillas’ own form and confidence have taken a massive battering and he has admitted that he is going through the worst stage of his career to date.

“I have been playing in La Liga for ten seasons and this is the worst start I have ever had,” he told Punto Radio program ‘El Mirador’.

“Defensively, we are very vulnerable, including myself. It just seems that when teams attack us three times, they score three goals and it is clear that everyone in the team is at fault.

“With the way we are playing now, we will not be able to win the title. But I believe that we are just going through a bad streak and there’s still a long to go in the season. Two years ago, we were eight points behind Barcelona but we came back and we won La Liga on the last day,” he offered.

The focus then invariably turned to the mouth-watering clash with Barca in El Clasico this Saturday.

“Barcelona are nine points ahead of us and it’s true that they are playing very well. But we must still go there with the mentality that we can win,” he concluded.
