The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has made a formal presentation to confirm their candidacy to host the 2018 World Cup Finals jointly with Portugal.
Spain had been in talks with their Iberian neighbours over the past several months to launch a bid to organise the event but on Tuesday, the application was made official.
“The board have finalised the formal tender for Spain’s candidature to organise the 2018 World Cup to be held jointly with Portugal,” read an official RFEF statement.
FIFA’s Executive Committee decided last weekend in Tokyo that they would accept applications simultaneously for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, and the nation(s) that missed out on the 2018 edition can automatically apply for the subsequent event, provided they are not from the same continent.
The other confirmed candidates so far for 2018 include Belgium/Holland, Australia, England, Qatar and Russia, while those who have only expressed their interest include the United States, Mexico, Canada, China and Japan.
FIFA will accept submissions until January 2009 and the winners will be announced in December 2010.
