City must up Gago bid

City must up Gago bid

Fernando Gago's agent insists his client could leave Real Madrid, if the right offer comes along.

The Argentina international has grown frustrated at a lack of first-team opportunities at Santiago Bernabeu and is looking to move on.

Manchester City are among those to have shown an interest in the combative midfielder, with the Blues reported to have already lodged a bid to Real.

Their offer is believed to fall short of the Spaniards' valuation, though, and Roberto Mancini has been told he must shell out around €20million (Ј17.5m) if he wants to get his man.

City certainly have the financial clout to push through such a deal, but it remains to be seen whether they will pursue their interest in Gago or turn their attention elsewhere.

Untenable

The South American's agent, Marcelo Lombilla, believes an agreement could yet be reached with City, and he hopes the situation will become clearer over the next few days.

"The subject is not yet closed," he said.

"We want to speak again with (Real director general) Jorge Valdano and perhaps then the situation will change."

Gago feels life in the Spanish capital has become untenable, with the 23-year-old desperate to secure a switch before the January transfer window slams shut.

"I want to play and that has become impossible at Real," he said.
