Skysports.com understands, that Villarreal and Wigan are continuing talks over Marco Ruben.
The Argentine striker has already agreed terms with The Latics on a four-and-half year deal.
Ruben is understood to be very impressed with Latics chief Roberto Martinez and is eager to seal a move to the DW Stadium.
However, just as the deal looked set for completion a stumbling block emerged over the payments of the final fee.
Now Villarreal have announced that Ruben will be staying at El Madrigal - continuing to play for their B side in the Segunda Liga.
Wigan, though, have not given up hope of concluding the move, but with the window due to close on Monday - Martinez is believed to be weighing up other options in case the deal cannot be finalised.
