Dossena linked with Atletico

Dossena linked with Atletico

Andrea Dossena is holding talks over a possible switch to Atletico Madrid, skysports.com understands.

The Liverpool full-back has been the subject of constant speculation and seems certain to leave Anfield during the January transfer window.

Dossena has failed to live up to his Ј7million price tag since joining the Reds from Udinese 18 months ago and a return to his native Italy had been touted as the most likely scenario.

However, one of Dossena's agents, Federico Pastorello, has labelled a move to Serie A club Napoli as 'impossible'.

Pastorello admitted the Reds defender could move to Spain instead, with Atletico understood to be the club involved.

"A move to Napoli is impossible," he told TuttoNapoli.net . "The negotiations for a possible move for Dossena to Napoli are over.

"If I was to make a prediction I would say that Andrea will not return to Italy.

"We are in negotiations with several foreign clubs, with a very important Spanish club who are not in European competition - the deal is even at an advanced stage."

Atletico are currently 15th in La Liga and they have shipped 27 goals in just 15 league games so far this season.

The 28-year-old Italy international is keen to move away from Anfield as he looks to secure his place in the Azzurri squad for the 2010 World Cup.

Cuellar rejects Real rumours

Aston Villa defender Carlos Cuellar has rejected rumours linking him with a move to Real Madrid.

Reports in Spain have suggested Real are targeting a move for Cuellar after losing Pepe to long-term injury.

Cuellar, who is enjoying his best form for Villa this season, is flattered to be linked with Real but insists he is staying at Villa Park.

"It's a great honour to be linked with teams of that stature," Cuellar told the Birmingham Mail .

"Although it's not true, that they mention you is important. I'm staying at Aston Villa. Nothing could happen. This is the path that I have chosen. I was not forced to do anything.

"My dream was to play in a foreign league. Where better to do that than the Premier League?"

Ivanovic backed to be Real deal

Ivanovic backed to be Real deal

Serbia coach Radomir Antic believes Branislav Ivanovic would be an ideal signing for Real Madrid.

The Chelsea defender has been targeted by Real as a January signing to cover for the loss of their Portugal international Pepe, who is expected to be out injured for the rest of the season.

Chelsea are ready to hand Ivanovic a new contract to head off Real's interest, but the Spanish giants are set to press ahead with a move for the Serbia international, 25, and are thought to be weighing up a Ј10million bid.

Antic has coached several top Spanish sides, including Real, and reckons Ivanovic would be worth every penny.

Ability

"He is very physical and is always composed," said Antic. "He has the ability to play for Real Madrid."

Ivanovic joined Chelsea for Ј9.7million from Lokomotiv Moscow in January 2007 and after making a slow start at Stamford Bridge, he has established himself as a key man for the Blues over the past 12 months.

He has made 28 international appearances for Serbia and is expected to be a key figure in Antic's squad for next summer's World Cup finals.

Kaka ready for Real return

Kaka ready for Real return

Kaka has told Real Madrid is he raring to go in the New Year after a month's absence through injury.

The attacking midfielder has been sidelined with a pelvis problem since Real's defeat at Barcelona in late November, but the 27-year-old was back in training on Monday as the first team returned to duty from the winter break.

Kaka, who moved to the Santiago Bernabeu in a Ј59 million move, has failed to hit the heights expected of him since his summer move to Spain from Italy.

But with Sunday's clash with Osasuna on the horizon, the former AC Milan maestro has declared himself fit for the weekend fixture and keen to prove his worth to Real in the second half of the season as they look to close the gap on Barca at the top of the Primera Division.

Cured

"I am totally cured," said the Brazilian. "I am good, I don't have any more pain in the pubis.

"I hope to work with the group at my top this week and get myself good physically."

Real have won all four of their matches in Kaka's absence and it remains to be seen if Manuel Pellegrini will shuffle his pack to accommodate the former world player of the year for the trip to Osasuna.

Kaka's spell on the sidelines has allowed the midfielder to look ahead to the 2010 World Cup where Brazil are bidding to win an unprecedented sixth trophy.

But the playmaker called on his team-mates to have extra focus in their preparation for the South Africa tournament after off-field issues aided their early exit to France in the quarter-finals of the 2006 World Cup.

"We will need to use the two weeks we will have before the World Cup to practice properly, to gain tranquillity and to think about getting focused," Kaka told the Estado de S. Paulo.

"It's going to be key for the team to arrive with winning chances."

Pique close to new deal

Pique close to new deal

Gerard Pique's agent has revealed the defender has held 'informal talks' with Barcelona over a new contract.

The former Manchester United player is under contract until 2012 but he is regarded so highly that Barca are keen to tie him to an extension.

The terms of the new deal would reportedly see his buyout clause rise from 50million euros to 150million euros and keep him at Camp Nou for a further two years.

Barca president Joan Laporta announced last week that negotiations were set to begin and the 22-year-old's representative Arturo Canales claims tentative discussions have now taken place with sporting director Txiki Begiristain.

"There has been informal contact with Begiristain about this subject but formally we don't have anything yet to consider," said Canales.

Laporta is keen to secure the future of a youngster who has already started to fulfil his potential.

"The next player in to sign a new deal will be Pique because he deserves it," said Laporta.

"Today Gerard is one of the best central defenders in the world."

Ivanovic on Real radar

Ivanovic on Real radar

Branislav Ivanovic's agent expects the defender to stay at Chelsea despite attracting interest from Real Madrid.

Real are understood to have identified the 25-year-old as one of their transfer targets for the January window after losing centre-back Pepe to injury.

Pepe is set to be sidelined for around six months with knee ligament damage and the Spanish giants are desperate to bring in reinforcements.

However, Ivanovic has established himself as a key player at Stamford Bridge this season under Carlo Ancelotti.

The Serbian's versatility has proved useful and he has filled in admirably at right-back in place of the injured Jose Bosingwa.

Ivanovic's representative Vlado Borozan believes it would be hard for Real to prise him away from the London club.

"The interest of Real Madrid is true, but I don't think the Blues are willing to sell him at this moment," Borozan told calciomercato.it .

"Ancelotti has admired him since he was Milan's coach, and now Ivanovic is part of his plans of Chelsea, it seems very difficult that Real can take him."

Crash horror for Buonanotte

Crash horror for Buonanotte

Argentine starlet Diego Buonanotte is facing up to seven months on the sidelines after being involved in a car crash.

The River Plate playmaker was airlifted to hospital in Buenos Aires on Saturday after seeing three of his friends perish in the incident.

The 21-year-old is reported to be out of any immediate danger but an injury to his lung is still causing concern.

"Diego is stable but we are continuing to wait," said club doctor Horacio Cavallieri.

"We know that the next 72 hours are those where the risk is greatest.

Fractures

"The fractures can wait, the priority is the lung. At the moment he is recovering as has been foreseen. The recovery period is an estimated seven months."

Cavallieri added: "He is sedated but you can talk to him because he is conscious.

"We have not mentioned at all what happened in the accident. He hasn't asked us either. We don't want him to watch television. We will supply a group of psychologists and psychiatrists to help him."

Buonanotte is regarded as one of Argentina's most promising talents, with it seen as only a matter of time before he seals a big-money to Europe.

Sunderland and Atletico Madrid were reported to be monitoring his progress ahead of the January transfer window, but any plans to bring him on board will now have to be shelved for the foreseeable future.

Messi rounds off perfect year

Messi rounds off perfect year

Lionel Messi admits his achievements in a trophy-laden 2009 have surpassed his 'wildest dreams'.

The Barcelona superstar has claimed every prize he has been in the running for this season, with individual and team honours secured at every turn.

The Argentina international helped Barca make history as they won six titles in the space of 12 glittering months, while he has also been named Fifa World Player of the Year and won the Ballon d'Or.

Things could not have gone any better for Messi and his Catalan employers and the South American playmaker admitted as much after being appointed the best player on the planet at a star-studded ceremony on Monday.

"This is the best possible way to end a great year for Barcelona and for me," he said.

"Not in my wildest dreams could I have imagined that I would experience the year I have."

Special

Messi was up for the Player of the Year gong alongside club team-mates Xavi and Andres Iniesta, but he believes any one of Pep Guardiola's all-conquering side would have been deserving of a nomination.

"Any Barcelona player who has been involved this year deserves to win because what we have achieved is special," he added.

"I was fortunate to help us to many wins, true, but everything is the product of team work. I was fortunate to be the one to get the goals."

Despite having won just about every major honour at the age of 22, Messi insists he will not be resting on his laurels in the future.

"I will not relax now," he said.

"I am still very young and I have a lot to live for and a lot to try and achieve. You can always get better."

Spurs cool over Riesgo

Spurs cool over Riesgo

Real Sociedad have confirmed that they have had no contact with Tottenham over Asier Riesgo.

The highly-rated goalkeeper spent time on trial with Spurs earlier this month with a view to a January switch to White Hart Lane.

Riesgo, 26, enjoyed his stint in North London and was hoping to seal a move.

But Sociedad club sources have confirmed that no deal is in place.

"After the trial we were expecting some movement from Spurs, but as of today we have not received a call about the subject," a club source told skysports.com .

Riesgo, who is out of contract in the summer, was being considered by Spurs boss Harry Redknapp as he looked at bringing in a new keeper in January following Carlo Cudicini's motorcycle accident earlier this year.

However, it now appears that Spurs may be looking elsewhere as Riesgo's agent Eugenio Botas is also yet to hear back from Redknapp.

Sociedad have already told Riesgo he can leave the club in January as he is not in their plans.

Gunners chief slams Barca

Gunners chief slams Barca

Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood has launched a scathing attack on Barcelona over their continued pursuit of Cesc Fabregas.

The Catalan giants are constantly linked with a move for the 22-year-old, who departed their youth system to sign for Arsenal in 2006.

Real Madrid are also linked, but Barca are thought to be leading the chase, should Fabregas decide his time with Arsenal is over.

Hill-Wood has now responded to the latest speculation, which has arisen following comments from Barca president Joan Laporta.

"I am really p****d off with Barcelona and all that nonsense," he told the Daily Star .

Long-term contract

"Cesc is on a very good, long-term contract and I don't think he has any intention of not honouring it.

"It is not the first time they have done this and it is a most disrespectful and tiresome thing to do.

"You would think there would be some action you could take against them, but I suppose you cannot stop the man shooting his mouth off.

"Our position, and I think Cesc's position, is very steadfast. He has been with us for seven years and there is no reason he should want to up sticks.

"I don't think I would talk to him about what Barcelona have been saying because I don't think he wants to talk about it.

"From everything we hear he is very settled. He has a long-term contract and I see absolutely no reason why it shouldn't continue."

Barca rule out Robinho swoop

Barca rule out Robinho swoop

Barcelona president Joan Laporta claims the club will not be signing Robinho in the January transfer window.

The Manchester City attacker has been continually linked with a move to Camp Nou and has previously hinted at his desire to move to the Catalan club.

But the Eastlands outfit, now under manager Roberto Mancini following the departure of Mark Hughes on Saturday, turned down an opening bid, according to Laporta, and now the Spanish side are happy with their squad.

"We are very happy with the squad but if we have to make any improvements we will do," Laporta told radio station Rac1 .

"The conditions we set out for Robinho were not acceptable to City and since the squad are developing so well, unless there are any unforeseen last-minute changes, we will not be signing anyone in January."

The Brazilian star, who moved to City for Ј32.5million from Real Madrid, has only made six appearances in the Premier League so far this season due to injury and has so far failed to find the back of the net.

Emotional

Meanwhile, Laporta also revealed his joy after Barca were crowned World Club Champions following their win over Estudiantes at the weekend.

The Argentinean side were beaten 2-1 in the final in Abu Dhabi, to record their sixth trophy success in 2009, which prompted tears from manager Pep Guardiola.

"We must enjoy the moment but also keep going," Laporta added.

"We have all lived through winning a very special title especially when you bear in mind our predecessors could not manage it.

"It was very emotional, seeing Pep (Guardiola) crying.

"It's a huge boost to morale and confirmation that Barca are the best in the world."

Naka wont quit Spain

Shunsuke Nakamura is not looking to quit Espanyol and will fight to cement a regular first-team place.

The 31-year-old, who rejected a return to Japan to realise his dream of playing in Spain in the summer, has proven to be one of La Liga's biggest disappointments to date.

The former Celtic star was left out the squad that took on Almeria in last weekend's league fixture, prompting the Japanese press to question his future at Estadi Cornella-El Prat.

However, Nakamura is not eyeing a move next month and is determined to fight his way back into the team.

"I need to find a solution which will help me play more games," the midfielder told Nikkan Sports .

"At the moment, I'm not too happy about things. I just need to keep on trying. It's all about trial and error."

With the 2010 World Cup just over six months away, it is suggested his place in the Japan national team is under serious threat.

Despite his lack of playing time at Espanyol, Nakamura has received the full backing of Japan boss Takeshi Okada and only an injury will rule him out of the tournament.

Getafe to part with Adrian

Getafe president Angel Torres Sanchez has revealed the club are looking to move on Adrian Gonzalez.

The 21-year-old midfielder joined the Primera Liga outfit from cross-city rivals Real Madrid in May 2008, having graduated through the academy ranks at Santiago Bernabeu.

He has, however, struggled to hold down first-team football at Coliseum Alfonso Perez and looks set to be offloaded in the New Year - possibly on loan.

A switch to Villarreal had been touted, but Perez has moved to rule out such a deal.

He is instead looking to reach an agreement with a foreign club, with France seemingly Adrian's most likely destination.

"He may end up with a French team," Torres told Radio Marca .

"There is no chance of him joining a Spanish first division side, so he could head overseas."

Vargas focused on Viola

Juan Manuel Vargas has distanced himself from reports linking him with a move to Real Madrid.

The Fiorentina winger is believed to be on Real's radar ahead of the January transfer window, with the Spaniards preparing a big-money approach.

The Peru international has seen his profile rise considerably over recent years, with a move to Florence from Catania in 2008 providing him with a grander stage on which to display his talents.

Vargas insists he is not actively seeking a New Year switch, and is instead fully focused on life in Italy, but has hinted that he could be tempted by a fresh challenge in the future.

"I don't like to look too far ahead," the 26-year-old told La Nazione .

"I prefer to live day by day and for now that means, at this moment, there is only Fiorentina.

"I want to grow up here, I want to help push the team to the top and then maybe in June or in a few years' time we'll see."

He added: "Real Madrid? That is just a rumour. It is not the time to start talking about the future."

Ronaldo - I miss United

Ronaldo - I miss United

Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed he misses being at Manchester United 'a little bit', but is happy he joined Real Madrid.

United sold the Portuguese winger to Real in the summer for a record-breaking Ј80million fee to enable Ronaldo to fulfil a boyhood dream of playing for the Spanish giants.

He has impressed at the Bernabeu, despite a two-month absence through injury, and is enjoying playing for Manuel Pellegrini's side.

However, he still retains an affection for his former club amid suggestions United are currently in decline following Ronaldo's departure from Old Trafford.

Focused

Ronaldo, speaking in Zurich ahead of the Fifa world player award, said: "I think Manchester United are doing very well this season - they have lost the last two games but they are still second in the league.

"What people think about me is their opinion, but I really miss Manchester a little bit as I played there for six years and I left a few friends there.

"So I miss the club a little bit, but I'm focused now at Real Madrid and I'm really, really happy there."

Ronaldo concedes that Barcelona, whose victory in the Club World Cup at the weekend made it a staggering six trophies in the last year, have to be regarded as the best club on the planet - but he is determined to challenge their supremacy.

"Barcelona has won everything this year so have to be the best club at the moment," he added. "Barcelona have a style of play and players who have been playing together for many years so they are an outstanding team.

"But we will do at our best at Real Madrid to win the league and Champions League.

"It's going to be difficult, but in football everything is possible if you work hard and dedicate yourself to that endeavour."

Ayala reveals River wish

Ayala reveals River wish

Roberto Ayala has admitted that he would welcome the opportunity to return to River Plate next summer.

The veteran defender is currently on the books of Real Zaragoza, but will see his contract with the Spaniards expire at the end of the season.

The 36-year-old is already pondering the next step in his distinguished career and has revealed that he would like to head home.

River, with whom he made his name in the mid-90s, have expressed an interest and Ayala would be happy to talk terms with the Buenos Aires-based outfit.

"I have said that I would like the challenge, but we will see what happens," he told Ole .

"Going to River would be great. (Chairman Daniel) Passarella has called me and I was pleasantly surprised to hear that River are interested.

"I was not able to enjoy my experience there as much as I would like last time, but the club opened the door to Europe for me and I will always be grateful to them."

No deal yet

Ayala is excited by the prospect of working with Passarella again, the man who gave him his big break at River and with the Argentina national side.

"(Coach) Leo Astrada knows me and knows what I can offer," he added.

"The same is true of Passarella, as he took a chance on me during my first spell with River and with the national team.

"There is nothing formal yet, but I like the idea.

"The interest is there and we will see what happens. I am committed to Zaragoza until June, I am under contract, but after that we'll see."

Pellegrini - We missed Ronaldo

Pellegrini - We missed Ronaldo

Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini admits he is delighted to have Cristiano Ronaldo back in the squad.

The world's most expensive player made his comeback in the UEFA Champions League win over FC Zurich at the end of November having missed 11 matches with an ankle injury.

He marked his return in style just days later in Europe's elite competition with both goals in the 2-0 win over Marseille.

Delighted with his comeback, Pellegrini confessed the club missed their star asset in every game he didn't play.

Exceptional

"Cristiano is a colossus," Pellegrini told Spanish newspaper AS . "He can always make the difference in any game.

"Barcelona is all about the Messi brand and here it is all about the Cristiano brand.

"He is an exceptional player and also has a great personality.

"There is not one match when he has not played that we have not missed him."

Despite emphasising Ronaldo's talents, Pellegrini appeared keen to stress his side's ability even without such star players.

He added: "I am not taking anything away from him, but Real Madrid were able to claim top spot without him and we won in Mestalla (against Valencia) without either him or Kaka."

Mate Oier Sanjurjo has been struck down by a long-term knee injury for the second consecutive season.

The Osasuna defender was forced off during Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Athletic Bilbao and now looks set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

He is thought to have damaged ligaments in his right knee, although the results of medical tests have yet to be confirmed.

Initial fears suggest Oier could be sidelined for up to three months, ruling him out of a crucial stage of the season.

The 23-year-old suffered a similar problem last term, in his left knee, with the injury keeping him out for much of the second half of the campaign.

Oier will now join Javier Portillo and Ludovic Delporte in the Osasuna treatment room.

Villa reveals English interest

Villa reveals English interest

David Villa has put his Premier League suitors on alert by revealing that he will consider his Valencia future at the end of the season.

The Spain international has established himself as one of the finest strikers in world football during his four-year stay with Valencia.

He remains happy with his current club but has hinted that it may soon be time to explore other options after being linked with a big-money move to England last summer.

"Quite simply, I rejected the possibility of moving abroad at that moment because there were issues that would not allow me to leave my country," Villa told The Times .

"My wife was pregnant and it didn't seem right to leave.

"I like the Premier League a lot. It's the league I follow the most along with La Liga and I've got a lot of friends playing there.

"There are a lot of globally important teams there that play very good football."

Duty

Villa has enjoyed another splendid campaign with Valencia and is staying focused on playing as well as he can over the next few months leading up to the World Cup.

"I have a duty to Valencia, it's my club: the one that pays my wages and with whom I have a contract," he said.

"This summer they'll have a look at things, analyse them and in time we'll see what happens.

"All I can do now is stay relaxed, try and score as many goals as possible and have a good a season as possible, as much as with my club as with the national team."

Showcase

Villa is fully aware that many of his countrymen have taken the plunge in recent years and started to play their trade overseas, notably in England.

"Maybe quite a few years ago, Spanish players were reluctant to leave La Liga for another league," he said.

"But that's all changed now. There are very important players, a showcase of Spanish footballers playing for Premier League clubs; and there are players in other leagues, lesser leagues, as well.

"I think that the Spanish footballer has changed in this aspect in the last few years."

Sporting Gijon are only prepared to do business with Birmingham over Michel for 4million euros, according to reports in Spain.

Blues manager Alex McLeish spent much of the summer chasing the Spaniard but a move failed to materialise due to a disagreement over the transfer fee.

Birmingham's final offer was understood to be in the region of 3million euros, to be paid in several instalments.

Gijon rejected the bid but reports in the Spanish media suggest they would now accept a proposal of 4million euros if they receive at least 60 per cent of that sum in January.

Coach Manuel Preciado still regards Michel as a key player but the club's financial situation could force them to let him go.

And McLeish is expected to be provided with considerable transfer funds in the New Year after Carson Yeung completed his takeover at St Andrews.

Real Zaragoza are ready to offload former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant when the transfer window reopens.

Pennant, who joined Zaragoza in the summer on a free transfer, has failed to hit the heights in Spain and his club are reported to be willing to listen to offers for the wideman.

Zaragoza director Erard Poschner claims they are disappointed with the impact made by Pennant and are ready to sell him back to the Premier League next month, if they can find a buyer.

"We are disappointed with Pennant. This is based on the commitment of the players," Poschner is quoted as saying in The Sun .

"With spirit like this it is better to 'sack' some players and seek reinforcements in the winter market. We want players who guarantee their work and effort."

Barca want Guardiola extension

Barca want Guardiola extension

Barcelona president Joan Laporta wants the club's future to include Pep Guardiola as manager.

The 38-year-old has proved a huge success in management after guiding the Catalans to a historic La Liga, UEFA Champions League and Copa del Rey Treble in his debut season.

Success balanced against the aesthetic and clinical style favoured by Guardiola has only served to increase the praise of the former Barcelona player and would make him an extremely popular choice at any other club.

Laporta, therefore, is eager to secure the ex-Spain international to a new deal before his current agreement expires at the end of this season.

Very important

"It is very important that he takes his time and that he is completely convinced of having made the right choice," Laporta told RAC1 .

"I want to imagine the future of Barcelona with Guardiola."

Guardiola has remained silent on what he wants to do and speculation has suggested that he is waiting to discover the identity of a successor to Laporta, whose presidency expires in 2010.

But Laporta said the extension of Guardiola's contract, "will not depend on who will be the new president of Barca."

Barcelona have also won the Spanish Supercup, European Supercup and Club World Cup during Guardiola's tenure.

Fabiano hints at Sevilla exit

Luis Fabiano admits he is likely to leave Sevilla, but only after next summer's World Cup finals in South Africa.

The Brazilian ace was wanted by AC Milan at the start of the season, however, they baulked at the club's asking price.

Premier League giants Manchester United and Chelsea have been linked with a New Year move for the 29-year-old.

But Fabiano believes it would be too risky to swap clubs shortly before next summer's prestigious tournament.

Fabiano is aware of interest in his services and concedes he is a big fan of Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti and United's style of play.

Risky

"A January move would be too risky," he is quoted by Daily Star Sunday

"You'd have to deal with changes too close to the World Cup and there's little time to recover from any setbacks.

"If a club approaches Sevilla then, they will make their lives as hard as they can, just like they did with AC Milan.

"But after the World Cup it's a different story.

"I see United as a team with a very interesting style of play, of passing, of crossing. I think it would be easy to fit in.

"Then there's the Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti, whom I really admire, and Sir Alex Ferguson, too."

Malaga boosted their survival hopes with a shock victory over Real Mallorca while Espanyol overcame fellow strugglers Almeria.

Malaga claimed only their second victory of the season as UEFA Champions League hopefuls Real Mallorca were undone at La Rosaleda.

But substitute Fernando Forestieri stepped off to fire home the winning goal 13 minutes from time to claim three crucial points.

Espanyol halted a run of five successive defeats with a 2-0 home victory over Almeria to move four points clear of the relegation places.

Javi Marquez made the vital breakthrough for the hosts on the stroke of half-time, with their success sealed by substitute Ferran Corominas' 82nd-minute effort.

Real Valladolid were also indebted to one of their replacements with Haris Medunjanin emerging from the bench to hit a last-gasp winner against Sporting Gijon.

Luis Moran had put visitors Gijon ahead in the 13th minute before Nivaldo levelled for the hosts just before the half-hour mark.

Villarreal took the points from their meeting with struggling Racing Santander as Giuseppe Rossi (51) and Joseba Llorente (72) found the net.

Atletico Madrid had goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo to thank for a 1-1 draw at Tenerife as he saved a first-half penalty from Nino.

It was Nino who in only the third minute had given Tenerife the lead as he prodded home from close range a well worked set-piece. Jose Manuel Jurado was Atletico's saviour as he netted a leveller on 22 minutes before Nino blotted his copybook from 12 yards just before half-time.

Deportivo La Coruna and Valencia shared the spoils in an entertaining match at the Riazor in Sunday's late game.

Both coaches will be left feeling frustrated after watching their men waste a sackful of chances.

Depor were unlucky not to be granted two penalties late on in the first half, while Juan Rodriguez saw his header crash off the crossbar as both sides had to settle for a stalemate.

Getafe president Angel Torres insists Roberto Soldado remains fully committed to the club.

The Spanish striker has been strongly linked with a move to Blackburn ahead of the January transfer window, with Rovers reported to be preparing a Ј10million bid.

Soldado has been made aware of the interest from England, with initial contact believed to have already been made.

However, the 24-year-old has told Getafe that he is prepared to stay until at least the end of the season, laying any reports of an imminent exit to rest.

"The issue depended on the views of the players and he has decided to remain at the club," said Torres.

"This is good news for us because the kid is developing quickly and has had a sensational season so far."

Soldado is also said to have spurned the opportunity to join ambitious Russian outfit Rubin Kazan, who have also enquired as to his availability.

Modest Messi curbs plaudits

Modest Messi curbs plaudits

Lionel Messi insists his personal success in 2009 has been the result of playing for a great team.

The Argentina international is expected to be named Fifa World Player of the Year on Monday, adding to the Ballon d'Or award he has already claimed this term.

Having helped Barca to an unprecedented six titles over the course of a remarkable 12 months at Camp Nou, few could deny that Messi is worthy of such an accolade.

He has added the Primera Liga title, the Spanish Cup, the UEFA Champions League, the Spanish and European Super Cups and the Club World Cup to his ever-growing roll of honour.

Messi, though, is adamant that Pep Gaurdiola's side have benefited more from their unflappable team spirit this year than his individual brilliance.

"No, please, I am not King of the World now, nor the number one, I don't believe in those things," Messi said in an interview with Spain's el Periodico newspaper on Monday.

"I am the same person as always and I have the good fortune to play in a great team.

"I don't feel like the best, the best is Barca."

Historic

Messi admits individual accolades are always special, but claims collective success at Barca is more important to him than personal praise.

"I only think of the group and that nobody has ever been able to win what we have, and that is what gives me more pleasure," added the South American superstar.

"Later on, of course, individual awards are also nice.

"It was an historic year for Barca and for me but it's thanks to the work of everyone."

Keita facing three weeks out

Keita facing three weeks out

Barcelona midfielder Seydou Keita is facing three weeks out after picking up a thigh injury.

The 29-year-old Mali international suffered the problem in Barca's 2-1 win over Estudiantes in the Fifa Club World Cup final on Saturday.

Keita was forced to come off at half time and was replaced by Pedro in the game against the Argentine side.

Tests on Sunday showed that the former Sevilla and Lens tough-tackler ruptured a muscle during the first half and will now face a spell on the sidelines.

However, club doctors believe he will be fit for Mali when they take part in the African Cup of Nations in January.

Carlo not thinking of Aguero

Carlo not thinking of Aguero

Carlo Ancelotti has played down speculation linking Sergio Aguero with a January move to Chelsea.

Reports have suggested that Ancelotti is considering a swoop for the Atletico Madrid striker when the transfer window reopens.

Aguero admitted earlier this week that he would suit Chelsea's style of play, while he also hailed Didier Drogba as the finest forward in the Premier League.

However, Ancelotti has stressed that he is not close to bringing anyone to Stamford Bridge at present.

Asked about Aguero, Ancelotti said: "It's not true. We don't have news of a signing, or a contract with any players.

"At this moment, we don't think about buying Aguero."

Zola mistake

The Chelsea manager is currently preparing for Sunday's London derby at West Ham, where he will pit his wits against Gianfranco Zola.

Ancelotti worked with Zola during his time in charge of Parma but he could not find a regular place for the younger Italian in his team.

Zola was a 'square peg' in Ancelotti's rigid system and quit Parma for Chelsea, where he went on to play over 300 games and become a legend at Stamford Bridge.

"Probably I made a mistake with him because I wanted to play 4-4-2 and I put the players in the right positions but he wanted to stay in the centre like a striker," Ancelotti admitted.

"In that period, when there was this discussion, Chelsea offered him a good contract and he decided to go.

"I think it was a mistake. It was my first experience in Serie A and I was not able to change the system.

"I preferred to maintain the system that I knew well. For this, Gianfranco had a different decision to make. But a lot of time has passed since and now we have a good relationship.

"He would probably not have gone to Chelsea if I had changed the system, but he had a wonderful experience here at Chelsea and all the fans here remember his performances."

Real Madrid kept up the pressure at the top of the table, while third-placed Sevilla slumped to a surprise home defeat.

Real Madrid moved to within two points of Barcelona at the top with a 6-0 thumping of Real Zaragoza.

Manuel Pellegrini's side took a third minute lead via Gonzalo Higuain before Rafael Van der Vaart hit a quick-fire brace (26, 28).

Higuain added his second (35) before second half goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and substitute Karim Benzema sealed the emphatic victory over the visitors, who remain in the drop zone.

Third-placed Sevilla slipped further off the title pace as their poor recent home form continued with a surprising defeat 2-1 at home to Getafe.

Manolo Jimenez's side had failed to win either of their previous two league matches at the Sanchez Pizjuan, drawing disappointingly against Valladolid and Malaga.

And they found themselves two goals down inside 33 minutes, with former Real Madrid striker Roberto Soldado grabbing both goals.

Alvaro Negredo - another ex-Madrid man - pulled one back at the start of the second half, but the hosts were unable to find a way back into the game.

Athletic Bilbao moved up to sixth in the table with 2-0 victory over Osasuna courtesy of early goals from Francisco Yeste (1) and Fernando Llorente (12).

Messi caps Barca fightback

Messi caps Barca fightback

Barcelona's successful year continued after battling from a goal down to claim a 2-1 extra-time win over Estudiantes in the Fifa Club World Cup final.

The trophy, their sixth piece of silverware this year, had to be earned the hard way as they trailed at half time courtesy of Mauro Boselli's header.

Pedro levelled matters late on before Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi secured the victory for Josep Guardiola's side with a 110th minute winner.

Against Atlante in the semis, Barca found themselves trailing after just four minutes and they almost suffered a similar fate, Enzo Perez only just failing to get on the end of Juan Sebastian Veron's through-ball in the fifth minute.

At the other end a superb back-heel from Zlatan Ibrahimovic put Xavi in the clear, but instead of shooting he opted for a pass inside and it was in front of both Ibrahimovic and Thierry Henry.

Wasted opportunity

That was a wasted opportunity for the Catalan outfit and they would not get any better in the first half, although Xavi looked to have good claims for a penalty turned down in the 33rd minute when he went crashing over a challenge by Estudiantes keeper Damian Albil.

Barca's mood would not have been helped four minutes later when they went behind.

A deep cross from the left was perfect for Boselli to get in between Carles Puyol and Eric Abidal and guide a header past Victor Valdes to put Copa Libertadores champions Estudiantes ahead.

Barca will have been disappointed with their showing before the break, but they came out with much more intent in the second half and twice came close to equalising in the opening 15 minutes.

In the first three minutes after the restart Ibrahimovic fired just wide of the far post after creating a shooting chance on the left of the area, and then

Pedro spurned a gilt-edged opportunity.

Henry's cross from the left eluded Albil but Pedro, racing in at the far post, totally missed the ball with an open goal at his mercy.

Pedro had become the first player ever to score in six different competitions in the same year after netting the final goal against Atlante, but he was left with his head in his hands after his miss here.

Stopped

The young winger almost made amends in the 69th minute after escaping the attentions of three opponents, but his final shot was stopped by Albil's foot at the expense of a corner.

Pedro would have another chance to go from villain to hero, though, and this time there was no mistake as he drew Barca level in the 89th minute just as an equaliser looked set to elude the Catalans.

Xavi's attempted pass was deflected up in the air, and Barca centre-back Gerard Pique climbed high to head the ball into the path of the unmarked Pedro, whose looping header over Albil found the back of the net and sparked wild celebrations by the European side.

The goal also sent the match to extra-time, when Barca made all the running.

Messi and Ibrahimovic both failed to hit the target with decent openings in the first period, but it would be the former who would end up being the match-winner.

Xavi's cross in behind the Estudiantes defence was latched onto by Messi and he dove forward to chest the ball past Albil and ensure yet another trophy would be heading back to the Camp Nou with record-breaking Barca.

Mallorca continued their push for a European place with a win over Osasuna, while there were also wins for Sevilla, Getafe and Villarreal in Sunday's La Liga action.

Xerez put in a brave performance but were defeated by Racing Santander, meanwhile Almeria kept out of the drop zone by drawing with Deportivo.

Valladolid came from behind to claim a point against Malaga and Getafe earned a win over Tenerife. Villarreal snatched a last-gasp win over Atletico Madrid and Sevilla went third after their win over Sporting Gijon.

Mallorca carved out a useful 1-0 win over Osasuna to maintain their fine form.

Gonzalo Castro bagged the decisive goal, the midfielder firing a shot past the hapless Ricardo after 61 minutes to extend his side's unbeaten run to five matches.

Title outsiders Sevilla strengthened their claim for La Liga honours by beating Sporting Gijon 1-0, a win that lifts them behind Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Jeszs Navas crossed for Freddie Kanoute to notch the winning goal after just eight minutes, the Malian planting the ball past Juan Pablo.

Manolo Jimйnez's side now trail leaders Barca by nine points with a game in hand.

Atletico scraped into the knock-out phase of the Champions League in midweek but their luck was out in the 2-1 defeat to Villarreal.

Jose Antonio Reyes fed Simao to open the scoring for Atletico. Villarreal pulled level in the second-half after good work from Joan Capdevila set-up up David Fuster to head home.

The away side snatched the points in the most dramatic fashion, Joseba Llorente coming off the bench to head past the despairing Sergio Asenjo in stoppage time.

Bottom-club Xerez shared five goals with Racing Santander but were on the wrong side of a 3-2 defeat at El Sardinero.

The visitors took the lead after three minutes through Mario Bermejo, the striker heading home from close range.

Mehdi Lacen restored parity for Racing and his side took the lead after the restart through half-time substitute Manuel Arana, who took just four minutes to make his mark.

Xerez continued to fight and they hauled themselves level with 20 minutes to go, Ramiro Antonito levelling things up with a shot from outside the area.

But with eight minutes to go the home side snatched a winner thanks to another substitute - this time Alex Geijo registering his first goal of the season.

High-flying Deportivo were expected to make light work of Almeria, yet they could only draw 1-1 against the strugglers.

And it was the home side who ripped up the form book to take the lead in the 58th minute as Kalu Uche found the top corner from Michel's centre.

Pablo Alvarez spared his side's blushes though, nodding past Diego Alvez from Juan Carlos Valersn's knock-down.

Malaga took the lead against Real Valladolid but could only manage a 1-1 draw. Duda curled into the top corner only for team mate Jeszs Gamez to gift Valladolid a leveller with an own-goal.

A brace from Juan Albin Leites helped Getafe secure a 2-1 triumph over Tenerife. The Uruguayan opened the scoring 38 minutes in with a close-range header, before putting his side in control an hour later with a second. Juanlu tapped in an 81st minute consolation for the visitors.

Fabiano hints at Sevilla exit

Ribery rejects Real reports

Ribery rejects Real reports

Bayern Munich ace Franck Ribery has rejected reports suggesting he had signed a pre-contract agreement with Real Madrid, but has hinted his future may lie away from the Allianz Arena.

The gifted France international was strongly linked with a switch to Santiago Bernabeu in the summer but remained with the Bundesliga giants, while Manchester United and Chelsea were also believed to be keen on his services.

Bayern have set a deadline for Ribery to make a decision over his next move as they do not want him to run down his existing contract, which is due to expire in the summer of 2011, and then leave as a free agent.

The 26-year-old is also eager to see his future resolved and has suggested that Louis van Gaal's side, who only just scraped through to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League, may not match his current level of ambition.

Quality

Ribery told Bild : "No, no, no! I have signed no pre-contract with Real. I haven't signed anything.

"Money plays no role in my considerations. I have a very good living, earning good money.

"I need to know by the end of the season if I am staying on or if I am leaving then.

"I would like to win the Champions League, but our team probably does not have the quality.

"Right now, we cannot compete with Barcelona, Real Madrid, Arsenal or Inter Milan."

Consider

Van Gaal, who was only appointed in the summer, came under pressure after Bayern's indifferent start to the season, although they have now recovered to trail leaders Bayer Leverkusen by just two points.

And Ribery was less than enthusiastic when asked if the Dutchman's continued involvement at Bayern would help persuade him to extend his spell with the club.

The winger said: "He is working for this club, I am working for this club. Him staying on would not be the big factor.

"Uli Hoeness (chairman) or Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (president) are more factors to consider for me."

Zigic Spurs talk rejected

Nikola Zigic's agent has dismissed reports linking Tottenham with a move for the giant striker.

Recent reports have claimed Spurs were lining up a surprise move for the Valencia forward when the transfer window reopens in January.

The Spanish side are understood to be willing to listen to offers for Zigic as they look to trim their wage bill and bring in much-needed funds.

However, Zigic's representative, Milan Calasan, has told skysports.com that he has not been contacted by anyone from White Hart Lane regarding the Serbian.

"I have heard nothing from Tottenham, no-one from Tottenham has contacted me about Zigic," Calasan told skysports.com .

"I think any move to Tottenham would be impossible as they already have (Peter) Crouch there so I don't think they would also want Zigic."

Zigic's agent also revealed the 29-year-old had rejected overtures from Zenit St Petersburg and that a move to Roma was unlikely.

"Zenit St Petersburg were interested in Zigic, but the player did not want to go there," added Calasan.

"Roma have also shown an interest, but I am not sure they have the money to buy Zigic so we will wait and see what happens."

Barca to fight for Fabregas

Barcelona president Joan Laporta says a decision will be made in the spring about how much the European champions will offer Arsenal for Cesc Fabregas.

The Spain international started out at Barcelona before joining Arsenal as a 16-year-old and he has regularly been linked with a return to Camp Nou.

Though Fabregas has continued to stress his commitment to the Gunners, Laporta has previously identified the midfielder as a 'special case'.

Laporta has again outlined his determination to sign the Arsenal captain next summer amid suggestions Barca will offer Ј40million for the 22-year-old.

Big player

"Cesc Fabregas is desired by us for many reasons," Laporta is quoted by The Sun . "Barcelona have decided to fight for the kid for next season.

"The money? This will be decided at the end of March to prepare for a deal.

"Cesc is such a big player. Our intention is to convince the Londoners about the sale.

"It won't be easy, but we have good relations with the Gunners."

Meanwhile, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is unsure how long Fabregas will be sidelined after suffering a hamstring injury against Burnley.

Fabregas opened the scoring in Wednesday's 1-1 draw before being replaced and will definitely miss Saturday's game against Hull City.

Wenger said: "He is injured, but for how long I don't know. It is a hamstring. He will not play on Saturday."

Kaka targeting January return

Real Madrid midfielder Kaka is targeting a return to action at the beginning of January.

The Brazil international has been sidelined since picking up a groin strain in last month's 1-0 defeat at Barcelona but is hopeful he will be fit to feature after La Liga's winter break comes to an end on 2nd/3rd January.

He said: "I am at a very advanced phase in the treatment. I don't know the exact date when I will play but I hope it will be when I return from Brazil."

Centre-half Pepe joined Kaka on the sidelines at the Bernabeu last week after tearing a knee ligament in Saturday's 3-2 victory over Valencia and will be out of action for around six months.

Pardeza told Marca : "We are obliged to look at some options to see if there is anything interesting, but the first solution is to look at what we have already.

"There are some very good players in the squad."

After a goalless first half Gonzalo Higuain broke the deadlock on 54 minutes when he headed home Karim Benzema's cross.

Valencia hit back six minutes later when David Villa headed home Jeremy Mathieu's cross only for Higuain to restore Real's lad five minutes later with a clincial finish from Marcelo's pass.

Joaquin drew Valencia level for a second time on 80 minutes with a drilled finish past Iker Casillas.

However, Real grabbed the winner three minutes later when Garay headed home Xabi Alonso's free-kick to keep them on the tails of Barcelona.

Athletic Bilbao piled the misery on struggling Real Zaragoza with a 2-1 win at La Romareda.

Mikel San Jose broke the deadlock on the hour mark when he headed home Iker Muniain's cross.

Markel Susaeta added a second nine minutes from time when he converted Muniain's through ball.

Zaragoza set up a dramatic finale when Carlos Diogo reduced the arrears in the dying seconds, but Bilbao held on for the victory to increase the pressure on under-fire Zaragoza coach Marcelino.

Race hots up for Suazo

Race hots up for Suazo

Tottenham face a fight with Atletico Madrid for highly-rated Chile striker Humberto Suazo.

Suazo is believed to be keen on a move to Europe after helping Monterrey win the Mexican League.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is thought to be a fan of Suazo and is weighing up a move for the striker as he looks to bolster his squad in the January transfer window.

However, Monterrey president Jorge Urdiales has warned it will take offers of €20million (Ј17.8million) to lure away Suazo.

"I am very proud that it is being said that Atletico Madrid is interested in a player of our team, but for the moment there isn't anything formal," Urdiales told Excelsior .

"We are going to sit down and have conversations when we receive an offer for Suazo, but it's 20million Euros that have to be paid for him because he is still under contract with us and we are not going to sell him for less money.

"At the moment the player is travelling to his homeland to have a very deserved holiday next to all his family so for the moment we are not going to disturb him by telling him about the negotiations."

Poyet dismisses Zaragoza talk

Brighton manager Gus Poyet has ruled out the possibility of taking charge at Real Zaragoza.

Poyet played more than 200 games in seven years with the Spanish club, who sacked their boss Marcelino at the weekend.

The Uruguayan was only appointed Seagulls manager in November and insists he has no intention of moving on.

"I have been here for a month and, of course, I am not looking to change things right now," he told the Argus .

"This sort of thing is going to happen, because it was one of the places where I played and I had a great relationship with the whole town, but there is nothing, just rumours.

"My position is I would like to stay here, I won't move if the chairman lets me stay."

Real Zaragoza have admitted they are keen to appoint Brighton boss Gus Poyet as their new manager.

Poyet, who only took charge of the Seagulls last month, made over 200 appearances for the Spanish side during a seven-year stay.

The 42-year-old former Spurs and Chelsea midfielder is being lined up as a possible replacement for Marcelino, who was axed by the La Liga strugglers at the weekend.

Zaragoza have tumbled into the relegation zone after taking just one point from their last domestic fixtures and are away to Real Madrid on Saturday in their final game before the winter break.

President Agapito Iglesias said: "We need to revive the team. Gustavo is an idol in Zaragoza."

Poyet was appointed as Brighton boss on 10th November following Russell Slade's departure but has been unable to lift the Withdean Stadium outfit out of the drop zone.

Riesgo eyeing Spurs switch

Riesgo eyeing Spurs switch

Asier Riesgo is hoping Tottenham and Real Sociedad can reach a 'financial agreement' following the goalkeeper's trial with the London club.

The 26-year-old former Spain Under 21 international says Spurs boss Harry Redknapp was happy with his stay at White Hart Lane.

Redknapp has been looking for cover for first-choice goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes after Carlo Cudicini was ruled out for the rest of the season following his motorcycle accident.

Riesgo, who spent last season on loan at Recreativo Huelva, hopes he will earn a lucrative move from the Segunda Division side.

Speaking to newspaper Diario Vasco on his return to Spain on Tuesday, Riesgo said: "It's a nice opportunity. I would go to a great club and a change of air would be good for me. I have to look out for my interests.

"The coach told me that he was happy with the time that I spent there. Now the clubs have to find a financial agreement. I think that it's a positive operation for all."
