Villa sidelined

Villa sidelined

David Villa is out of Spain's squad for the final World Cup qualifiers.

The Valencia striker injured his hamstring during Sunday's win at Racing Santander.

He was taken off on the hour and will now be withdrawn from Spain's squad to face Armenia and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

It is not thought that Villa's injury is too serious and he should be sidelined for around two weeks - although that does mean he will be a doubt for Valencia's match with Barcelona on 18th October.

Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque has already stated that he will not be tinkering with his squad ahead of the World Cup finals, so he may resist brining in a replacement for Villa.

Reports in Spain suggest that he is considering bringing in one of the Sevilla duo of Alvaro Negredo and Jesus Navas.

Winger Navas is hopeful he can work his way into Del Bosque's plans.

"I am working and if the (Spain call-up) comes along then we'll see," Navas said after Sevilla's weekend win over Real Madrid.

"I have to stay calm and take each step at a time and above all continue working.

"Going to the World Cup and being able to enjoy playing for the national team would be the best.

"But right now I am focusing on being relaxed."
