Ronaldo shurgs off Galaticos tag

Cristiano Ronaldo does not want the current Real Madrid squad to be dubbed Los Galacticos because he thinks that a new era is beginning at the club.

The Portuguese star is seen as the jewel in club president Florentino Perez's very expensive new crown with some of the media dubbing the team with the same label as the previous generation.

While Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo and Ronaldo all played under the Galactico motto, Ronaldo does not want anyone to call the current crop of players that.

"I don't like to use that word. Simply, we have a fantastic group with great players and we all want to form a team that will win things," he said.

"The Galacticos have gone - that was a different era, one that I respect a lot because of what it represented and the players they had, great players who made history at the club.

"But now we have a new group with new players, a new mentality, and we too want to win."

Madrid officials have stated that Ronaldo is feeling the pressure at the club, but the player himself has explained that he is revelling in it rather than let it be a burden.

"The expectations are high but that's normal given what was paid for the players we've signed. But we are all used to pressure - I played for many years at Manchester United, always under great pressure to win," he continued.

"It will be the same here. We have to be relaxed and work hard to build a squad. Then we can think of the victories and honours we can bring to this club.

"This is a club used to winning, a lot of the players here are winners, but now it's about a new team and a new squad. That's why we have to create the right mentality for us to win the league, the Champions League and the cups.

"This is a club obsessed with winning and now the players here have to think the same way.

"It's normal to have great expectations given the players the club have signed. Of course, Madrid always want to win things and we as players want to meet the challenge.

"With the team and players we have, we have to think positively and believe we can win, but we have to take one step at time. We must build a team, a group, and then think of trophies."

Kaka inspired

Kaka, meanwhile, has revealed that he is inspired by the huge transfer fee that Real Madrid paid to AC Milan to take him to the Santiago Bernabeu and felt it was time to move clubs.

Real Madrid's squad rebuilding programme has seen the fans and the media believe that the club can challenge Barcelona at the top once again and the Brazilian is full of confidence.

Rather than be pressured by the €67million price tag he is keen to use it to drive him on, but Kaka is under no illusion about the expectations on him in Spain.

"Obviously there's a great responsibility, but that is not a negative - it is a motivation, an incentive. We came here to be part of a project that everyone expects to be a winning project. I see it as a great motivation," he told added.

"At Real Madrid there has always been a responsibility to win and to be in the front window of Spanish and European football. The new players who've arrived, along with the ones who were already here, have a responsibility to get us winning.

"But experiences tells us that, in football, talent is never enough - the way the group comes together is fundamental to us becoming a winning team."

Debate has raged about why Kaka felt tempted to leave AC Milan after appearing to pledge himself to the club long-term, but he has revealed he felt that the time to leave had come.

"In my opinion life consists of cycles and my cycle in Milan had reached an end," he conitnued.

"It was very good, I won everything I could win, but then came the moment where the story had to end. It finished as I would have liked - I can go back to Milan and be welcomed by my colleagues because I left in a positive way.

"My arrival at Real Madrid has been very good too and I hope what happened in Milan will happen here - that I will write my name into the club's history.

"The ambition is to win the Champions League.. On top of that, you have the possibility of us being at home - and it would be fantastic to play the final at the Bernabeu.

"Success in modern football depends on a lot of different factors, but we'll certainly do our best to be in that final."

Injuries

Real coach Manuel Pellegrini has revealed that Sergio Ramos will not be in his plans for at least another week as he prepares to take his Real Madrid to Espanyol on Saturday.

Los Merengues' coach has not included the defender in his squad as he continues with his recovery programme after suffering an ankle injury in June.

Madrid will rotate their team after the international break, but Ramos is not yet match fit and Pellegrini is not going to risk calling him up too early.

"Sergio Ramos is still doing pre-season work," he told a press conference on Friday.

"I hope he is ready to perform well next week. We aren't going to hasten his recovery because we don't want him to get injured again. I believe he will play the following Sunday."

Pellegrini is planning his side to face Espanyol in their new stadium in Cornella-El Prat and believes that he has so many options that his team will be strong whoever he chooses.

"I think every team with a large number of internationals and a tight schedule will have the same problem, not just Real Madrid," he continued.

"We'll have to look at each game at a time and talk to the players to make sure they recover well. The method we'll use will depend on the circumstances we face.

"Rotations will not depend on each line. We would all llike to have a core team, but that's rather impossible due to international games and the heavy load of fixtures we will have this season.

"I could easily come up with a great starting lineup, worthy of the level demanded at Real Madrid, with any of the players on the squad."
