Alonso receives injury boost

Xabi Alonso is relieved to have been informed that his Achilles injury is not as serious as first feared.

The midfielder picked up a knock during Real Madrid's UEFA Champions League opener against FC Zurich on Tuesday.

Initial indications suggested that the Spain international could be facing up to a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

However, medical tests have revealed that the former Liverpool ace could be out for as little as two weeks.

"I feared the worst at first because the blow was hard and I have experienced bad injuries in the past," said Alonso.

"But the scans have been positive and I intend to be back helping the squad very soon."

Alonso damaged his right ankle during the second half of the midweek clash with Zurich, forcing him to make way for Argentine enforcer Fernando Gago.
