Puyol close to new deal

Puyol close to new deal

Barcelona president Joan Laporta is confident of reaching an agreement with Carles Puyol over a new deal.

The long-serving centre-back, who was linked with a move to Manchester City during the transfer window, has held discussions with the European champions.

There have been suggestions that the two parties are still a long way from striking a compromise but Laporta expects the issue to be resolved soon.

Puyol has been Barca captain for the past five years and Laporta insists manager Pep Guardiola is determined to keep him.

"There have been meetings with Puyol's representative and we'll shortly have an agreement," Laporta told RNE radio.

"It is the will of both us and our captain. It is very clear that Pep Guardiola and the club want him here."
