The Liga side have had an excellent season domestically and will finish in second place whatever happens on the final day, ahead of Barcelona and behind only Real Madrid.

With Champions League football therefore beckoning, Villarreal are looking to strengthen all areas of their side, particularly with regards to experience.

Both Campbell and Crouch having played in Champions League finals in recent years, and ergo the duo fit the bill. What's more, the Portsmouth stopper and Liverpool forward are both said to be open to the idea of a foreign move.

Villarreal, however, are declining to comment on the links that have been reported in both Spain and the UK.

"We are working on some names, but we never disclose details in the press," Villarreal general director Jose Manuel Llaneza told Sky Sports.

"In a few weeks we want to complete our squad ahead of a big campaign in Europe. This will be our challenge next season."

Campbell’s former Arsenal team-mate Pascal Cygan is due to leave El Madrigal at the end of the season after being told that he is surplus to requirements.

Meanwhile defender Martin Caceres, who gave an exclusive interview to goal.com earlier in the season (see here), is due back from his loan spell at Recreativo shortly and is expected to be given an important role next year after an impressive season.
