The centre-back remarked that the Manchester United ace was at the top of his game, and that it would be a privelege to play alongside him.
"He is the best in the world," said 27-year-old Metzelder of the Portuguese international.
"It would be very difficult to sign him as he's a member of a great club, but perhaps we'll see after the season."
Such comments will only serve to fuel the flames of rumour about a Madrid move for the Golden Shoe winner-elect.
Road To Recovery
Metzelder himself has scarcely made a first team appearance for Madrid all season. He's taken part in just one Copa and three European games, and until this weekend hadn't lined up in the Liga since November.
This was down to first a severe injury and then a sole of the foot operation, but after coming through 90 minutes against Real Zaragoza unscathed on Sunday, the German international is now ready to keep it going in time for Euro 2008.
However, Madrid may have already played their last game of the season: they're due to complete their campaign against Levante on Sunday, but this could be off due to a players' strike from the Granota side.
"I hope I can play on Sunday," said Metzelder. "We want to finish the Liga in front of our own fans and we do hope that Levante choose to play.
"As for me, I endured a lot of pain before deciding that there was no choice but to have an operation. Now I feel great and I hope to keep on playing. I'm part of this team and celebrated the Liga just like my colleagues."
