Chygrynsky completes Barca move

Chygrynsky completes Barca move

Ukrainian defender Dymytro Chygrynsky says he feels 'lucky' after completing his big-money switch to Barcelona.

The 22-year-old centre back has moved from Shakhtar Donetsk in a deal worth a reported 25million euros (Ј22 million).

The player, who featured for Shakhtar in their 1-0 defeat to Barca in Friday's European Super Cup, has completed a medical and signed his contract, the European and Spanish champions confirmed on their website.

He told Barca TV : "I feel lucky to sign for Barca. I'm hoping to improve and form a part of this great team.

Tough choice

"It wasn't easy (to leave Shakhtar). Shakhtar thought they would be involved in the Champions League.

"What's more they have just opened a new stadium and the president wanted me to stay."

Chygrynskiy is the Catalan giant's third summer signing after Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and defender Maxwell joined from Inter Milan.

Barca begin the defence of their Spanish league title at home to Sporting Gijon on Monday night, in a game being shown live on Sky Sports 1 at 9pm.

Van der Vaart staying at Real

Van der Vaart staying at Real

Dutch midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has been told he still has a future at Real Madrid.

The Spanish giants needed to cut their squad after their lavish summer spending spree, which brought in the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Xavi Alonso.

Van der Vaart was told he could leave the club and not only had to train away from the first-team squad but was not even given a squad number for this season.

But the departure of fellow Dutchmen Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder last week for Bayern Munich and Inter Milan, respectively, has handed Van der Vaart a reprieve.

Meeting

The 26-year-old and his lawyer, Robert Geerlings, recently met with Real coach Manuel Pellegrini, technical director Jorge Valdano and general director Jose Angel Sanchez.

And having already turned down a move to Turkish champions Besiktas this summer, Geerlings admitted it was unexpected to hear Van der Vaart was still wanted at the Bernabeu.

"At the meeting Rafael was urgently requested to stay at Real," he told weekly football magazine Voetbal International .

"The squad has been decreased to 25 players and that made them decide that Rafael doesn't have to leave anymore.

"For us, it was very surprising, and Rafael has decided to fight for his place in Madrid."

Geerlings also claimed that two English clubs made offers for Van der Vaart but he now insists: "It's official, Rafael will stay at Real Madrid."

Van der Vaart made 32 league appearances for Real last season after a summer move from Hamburg, but only 15 were starts.

Pedro ends Shakhtar's resistance

Pedro ends Shakhtars resistance

Shakhtar Donetsk pushed Barcelona all the way before substitute Pedro scored a 115th minute winner to secure the Uefa Super Cup for Josep Guardiola's side.

The European champions controlled possession throughout, but summer signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic failed to impress against the defence-orientated Ukraine outfit.

Long after Thierry Henry and Ibrahimovic had departed it was down to the substitutes to prevent the match at Monaco's Stade Louis II stadium going to a penalty shoot-out.

That moment arrived just five minutes before the end of extra-time when Pedro played a delightful one-two with the impressive Lionel Messi before curling a right-footed effort inside the far post.

Barca were far from their free-flowing best and credit must be paid to Shakhtar for maintaining their shape throughout. It might have been a different story had they taken one of their rare half-chances.

Even without the injured Andres Iniesta, Barcelona still dominated against an unadventurous Shakhtar side packed with hard-running Ukrainians and only mildly spiced up by their four Brazilians.

Shakhtar did not create a single opening in normal time while Barca at least showed some intent.

Hungry

Henry looked hungry and he was the first to threaten, a trademark dipped shoulder confusing his marker before he struck a rising shot which whistled over the crossbar.

Dmytro Chygrynsky, playing his last game for Shakhtar before joining Barca, gave the ball away to Messi and then went in hard on the diminutive Argentinian to regain possession.

A quick free-kick from Xavi saw Messi sting the fingers of Andriy Pyatov in the Shakhtar goal and the keeper recovered quickly to deny the lurking Henry.

Barcelona claimed for a penalty after Messi's direct free-kick struck Olexandr Kucher's arm but the referee was unimpressed.

If the first half had been disappointing, there was little to lift spirits in the second.

Daniel Alves produced a hopeless blast into the stands and then Ibrahimovic produced his major contribution to the game, falling like a sniper victim under Olexiy Gai's challenge and bringing a yellow card for the defender.

With the game drifting towards unwanted extra-time, Barcelona tried to step up a gear.

Turned it over

Messi hit a fierce left-foot effort that Pyatov could only parry, and when the ball drifted out to Henry by the left touchline he took deliberate aim to loop a shot into the far corner but the Shakhtar keeper climbed just high enough to turn it over.

Ibrahimovic continued to frustrate, failing to pass to Henry when he was clean through and then collapsing in the area theatrically under a fair challenge.

Messi lit up the match with a Maradona-like dribble past four challenges only to be thwarted at the very last moment. Furious, he became involved in a pushing match with Kucher and both were booked.

In the 98th minute Victor Valdes made his first save, diving low to keep out Julius Aghahowa's goal-bound shot.

Bojan, on for Henry, could have wrapped it up with two chances before, having barely threatened, the Ukrainians were denied a blatant penalty when Ilsinho was felled.

Shakhtar coach Mircea Luscescu stormed onto the pitch in fury but it was all in vain as Messi's brilliant pass set up Pedro for the latest of winners.

Real cash in on Dutch duo

Real cash in on Dutch duo

Manuel Pellegrini has admitted he was reluctant to let Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder leave Real Madrid.

But the Real coach acknowledged that the sale of the Dutch duo was necessary to balance the books at the Bernabeu after some extravagant summer spending.

Winger Robben completed a move to Bayern Munich on Friday for a fee of around 25million euros (Ј22m), while midfielder Sneijder has joined Inter Milan for 15m euros (Ј13.2m).

"They are two good players who would have been useful to us," Pellegrini said ahead of his new side's Primera Liga opener against Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday.

Spending spree

Real president Florentino Perez is seeking to recoup some of the 250m euros (Ј220m) he has splashed out on the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema and Xabi Alonso since regaining the reins at Real in June.

Robben, 25, has signed a four-year deal with German giants Bayern after scoring 11 goals in 50 league appearances for Real, who he joined from Chelsea for around 27m euros (Ј24m) in 2007.

Sneijder joined the same summer for a similar amount, going on to score 11 goals in 52 league games before signing a four-year deal with Inter.

The 25-year-old revealed that coach Jose Mourinho was a major factor in him joining the Italian champions although he is unlikely to feature in Saturday's derby clash with AC Milan.

"Mourinho is one of the world's greatest coaches," Sneijder told Inter's official website.

"I'm really happy to be able to work with him and he has had a really important role in this decision.

Amazing

"I think Inter is an amazing club, one of the biggest in the world, so I'm very happy to be here," he added.

"We have a great team at the moment so I think I will have a great time here."

Real had already offloaded Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar to AC Milan this month while Rafael van der Vaart could be the latest Dutchman to leave as the midfielder is on the transfer list and recently rejected a move to Turkish champions Besiktas.

Yet two more Dutchmen remain with the Spanish giants - striker Ruud van Nistelrooy and young winger Royston Drenthe - and they are expected to survive the summer overhaul.

Neill weighs up European options

Former West Ham United captain Lucas Neill could move abroad as he weighs up options from several European clubs.

Sky Sports News understands Neill has been offered the chance to move to Spain or Germany and is seriously considering a new life on the continent.

The 31-year-old is currently a free agent after turning down a new deal at West Ham and he was linked with Premier League rivals Sunderland.

Galatasaray, where compatriot Harry Kewell plays, were also mooted as admirers, but clubs in Spain and Germany have now shown an interest.

Neill continues to train three times a day under the supervision of an Australian fitness coach.

As a free agent, he does not need to secure a move before Tuesday's 5pm deadline.

De Guzman - Chelsea not for me

Feyenoord youngster Jonathan de Guzman says that he will snub a potential move to Chelsea in order to join Valencia.

The 21-year-old Dutch forward has reportedly attracted interest from the two clubs, with Chelsea scouts rumoured to be monitoring his recent performances in the Eredivisie.

But De Guzman has revealed that he would be hesitant to agree a move to Stamford Bridge because he feels his first-team opportunities would be limited.

Instead, he believes a transfer to Primera Division side Valencia would be the perfect way to progress his career.

However, the Canadian-born Holland Under 21 international also stated that he was happy at his current club and would have no problem staying with Feyenoord.

"The chances I (will) get to play (at Valencia) are bigger than at Chelsea," De Guzman told Dutch magazine Sportweek .

"And I don't want to be directly loaned out to another club. I want to go to Valencia. I feel a transfer to Valencia is the right step in my career.

"But if the clubs won't come to an agreement, I don't have any problems with staying at Feyenoord. I am still very happy at this club."

Robben wraps up Bayern move

Robben wraps up Bayern move

Bayern Munich have completed the signing of Arjen Robben from Real Madrid and the former Chelsea man goes straight into the weekend squad to face Wolfsburg.

The new acquisition is set for his debut in Saturday's Bundesliga clash against last season's champions after sealing a switch from the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Dutch winger has been awarded the number 10 shirt last worn at Bayern by his compatriot Roy Makaay after he passed a medical and signed a four-year contract in Munich.

Both clubs have agreed on an undisclosed fee for the 25-year-old, believed to be in the region of Ј22million.

German welcome

Robben said Bayern had "given me a good feeling" from the moment they first signalled their interest in signing him.

"I feel very welcome here," he told the club's official website .

"This is a big club with a great history and I am delighted to be here now."

Speculation has been rife in the last 24 hours about a potential swap deal seeing the much-coveted Frank Ribery heading the other way.

But the noise coming from the German giants is the same as it has been all summer - the Frenchman is going nowhere - and Bayern boss Luis Van Gaal feels he has the final piece of the jigsaw in Robben.

He said: "I am very happy to have another creative player, He is an explosive player."

Real confirm Sneijder sale

Real confirm Sneijder sale

Real Madrid have confirmed a deal that sends Holland midfielder Wesley Sneijder to Inter Milan has been reached.

Reports were already suggesting that the move was imminent, but now Real have confirmed the transfer on their official website.

"Real Madrid C.F. and F.C. Inter Milan have reached an agreement for the transfer of the player Wesley Sneijder to the Italian club," the club stated.

Sneijder had previously stated that he did not want to leave the Bernabeu, but admitted on Thursday that he was heading to the Serie A giants.

The transfer fee has not been yet been revealed but is reported to be worth around €15million, with €3million of that linked to objectives.

The 25-year-old is thought to have signed a lucrative five-year contract at the Giuseppe Meazza, but Inter have not yet officially announced the move.

Sneijder had been told he was not needed by Real, although he has claimed he was initially part of new coach Manuel Pellegrini's plans.

Wesley Sneijder has decided to accept a move from Real Madrid to Inter Milan, according to reports in the Italian press.

The Dutch midfielder had earlier pledged his future to the Spanish side, saying he did not want to leave the Bernabeu.

But after a meeting between Sneijder, his agent and Real Madrid officials, it now seems he has agreed to make the switch to Serie A.

The two clubs are reportedly now in the process of completing the formalities of the transfer after the player's decision became known.

Real have been looking to offload certain members of their squad since the arrival of numerous big-money signings over the summer and have once again stated that Sneijder is not in the club's plans for the coming season.

Sneijder sad to leave Real

Sneijder sad to leave Real

Wesley Sneijder insists he is looking forward to joining new club Inter Milan but added that his departure from Real Madrid had left a bad taste in his mouth.

Real are desperate to trim their squad and regain some of the money they spent on buying the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Xabi Alonso this summer.

Despite establishing himself at the Bernabeu since joining from Ajax in July 2007, the 25-year-old found himself surplus to requirements and has signed a five-year deal with Inter for a fee thought to be around €15million (Ј13.2million).

The Dutchman claims that he was happy to stay and fight for his place in the Spanish capital but in the end he had very little say in his future.

"I'm going with my head high," he told Marca . "I'm going to a great team, there's no doubt about that.

"I've been very happy here but now I have to look ahead and focus on my new team.

"The truth is that I was very happy here, it's something that I cannot deny. It makes me sad to go but that's the way it is. That's life.

"Now the only thing I can say is that I'm happy. I'm changing one great club for another great club."

Treated badly

Many expected Sneijder to be one of the players to be kept on by Real and the midfielder admits that if it was up to head coach Manuel Pellegrini he would still be at the club.

"What has happened with me is something very strange. The coach said he counted on me but there are people at the club who don't," he added.

"They have treated me very badly but I prefer not to talk about it. I'm going to give everything there [Inter]. Life and football move on."

Espanyol name new captain

Espanyol have appointed veteran midfielder Ivan De la Pena as their new captain following the death of previous skipper Daniel Jarque.

Jarque had only recently inherited the club captaincy from Raul Tamudo when he suffered a fatal heart-attack during Espanyol's pre-season tour of Italy.

Team coach Mauricio Pochettino confirmed on Wednesday that 33-year-old former Spain international De la Pena will wear the captain's armband during the upcoming campaign.

De la Pena enjoyed spells at Barcelona, Lazio and Marseille before he signed for Espanyol seven years ago.

The Catalan team have also moved to fill the gap left by Jarque's tragic death by signing Argentine defender Juan Forlin from Boca Juniors.

The 21-year-old will join on a five-year contract after a transfer fee thought to be in the region of €4million was agreed.

"The tragic loss of Jarque has forced the club to seek out a young player of proven ability to reinforce the defence," the club said in a statement.

Bolton target Cameroon ace

Gary Megson has added another midfielder to his wish-list in the form of Cameroon international Achille Emana.

The 27-year-old impressed for Real Betis in La Liga last season, following a Ј5.5million move from Toulouse in June 2008, but failed to help his side avoid relegation.

Emana bagged 11 goals and seven assists during the last campaign, and Bolton boss Megson is hoping to secure a deal before the transfer window closes.

"We tried to buy him last year, but he went to Betis and had a decent season there," he said.

"They've found themselves in trouble though, so whether there is a possibility on that one, I don't know."

Megson is trying to shore up his midfield for the Premier League campaign ahead, having already made a move for former Trotters favourite Kevin Nolan.

Lovenkrands snubs Spaniards

Peter Lovenkrands has turned down the offer of a contract from a Spanish side, reported to be Villarreal.

The Danish winger is currently without a club after seeing a short-term deal at Newcastle reach its conclusion at the end of last season.

With the new season now under way, Lovenkrands is keen to find employment as quickly as possible.

He is, however, reluctant to uproot his family, who have settled in England.

With that in mind, the 29-year-old is hoping to secure a move to a British side.

"That is correct, I have turned down a Spanish club," Lovenkrands said in Ekstra Bladet .

"Out of consideration to my two children, I would like to remain in Great Britain."

Lovenkrands has refused to rule out a return to Newcastle, having admitted that he would be willing to join the Magpies despite their relegation to the Championship last term.

Iniesta eyes Super Cup return

Barcelona star Andres Iniesta is hoping that he will be able to play in the European Super Cup on Friday.

The midfielder tore a muscle in his leg in May which meant he was unable to train with the rest of the squad throughout their pre-season.

Having missed the Confederations Cup tournament with Spain, the 25-year-old has spent the summer battling to return to action and now hopes to play against Shakhtar Donetsk in the European Super Cup on Friday, which is being shown live on Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports HD1 at 7.45pm.

Iniesta told Sport : "I hope to be told I can play in the next few days and return to training fully with the squad.

"We know that Shakhtar will be a strong team and that it will be a very hard game."

Despite not being involved, Iniesta was delighted with Barca's recent Spanish Super Cup win against Athletic Bilbao.

"The first trophy of the season has been won. I think it is difficult to find a better way to start a season than by winning a trophy," he said.

Robben linked with Bayern move

Robben linked with Bayern move

Real Madrid winger Arjen Robben has almost completed a switch to Bayern Munich, according to reports in the German press.

The 25-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Bernabeu after the influx of new stars at Real over the summer.

Bayern are attempting to recover from their worst start to a Bundesliga season for 43 years, having taken only two points from their first three fixtures.

Now Munich-based newspaper tz is reporting that a deal to bring Robben to the Allianz Arena is being finalised by the two clubs.

It has been suggested that the former Chelsea player will fill the wide position vacated by Franck Ribery, who is set to be employed as a playmaker by coach Louis van Gaal.

But van Gaal has stated that he has no say on the decisions made in the transfer market and will leave any possible moves to Bayern chiefs Uli Hoeness and Karl-Heinze Rummenigge.

"I still have no influence on who Bayern buy and I have not yet got the team to buy into my philosophy," van Gaal said.

The German giants are reportedly ready to pay up to Ј11million for the Holland international.

Malaga have completed the signing of Nigerian forward Victor Obinna on a season-long loan from Inter Milan.

Obinna previously attracted interest from Everton and Real Betis but has finally settled on a year with the Primera Division club.

The 22-year-old has reportedly already completed a medical with Malaga and will begin training with his new team-mates on Thursday.

After being used sporadically during his first season at the San Siro, Obinna is hoping to impress as a starter in order to cement his place in Nigeria's World Cup squad.

"I believe that I can succeed in Spain and it is my aim to have a successful year ahead of the 2010 World Cup," he said.

Malaga are not thought to have secured an option for a permanent deal when the loan expires in June of next year.

Ibra only had eyes for Barca

Ibra only had eyes for Barca

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has revealed that Barcelona is the only team he would have left former club Inter Milan for.

The Swedish striker was linked with a move to Barca's rivals Real Madrid before securing a club record move to the Camp Nou believed to be in the region of Ј58million, which included the transfer of Samuel Eto'o to the San Siro.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez was reportedly eyeing up the 27-year-old as he splashed out around Ј250million on building a new galacticos era at the Bernabeu, but Ibrahimovic admits his head was never turned.

"I had an agreement with my president at Inter that whoever came, whatever team came I want him to reject," said Ibrahimovic. "(But) I said if Barcelona comes, then you at least discuss.

"It's the club that can make me a better football player than I am today, I want to be part of this project and history that Barcelona is making now."

League Debut

The classy forward could make his league debut on Monday as Barcelona prepare to launch the defence of their Primera Division title against Sporting Gijon at the Camp Nou.

The former Ajax and Juventus striker has been successful throughout his career, winning two Dutch titles before adding three Serie A medals during his three years at Inter.

"Wherever I went I won. I let my results talk for me," said Ibrahimovic, who admits there is pressure to deliver in his debut season in Spain.

"Of course there is pressure. You play for Barcelona. I had a lot of pressure also on me when I went to Inter, when I went to Juventus I also had a lot of pressure, wherever you go in top football you will have pressure.

"There should be pressure. If there is no pressure it's not a challenge."

Ibrahimovic will link up with Lionel Messi to form a potentially lethal partnership as Barcelona look to repeat last season's treble feat which included the league, Spanish Cup and Champions League.

The pair combined well in Sunday's 2-1 win over Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish Supercup as the Swede set up Messi for one of two goals and he feels they linked up naturally on their competitive debut.

"We are two players who like to create situations for each other. It is not difficult to play with a player like Messi," he said.

Language Barrier

The Swede, who already speaks four different languages, is currently learning Spanish and Catalan to fit in at the club and although he is not fluent just yet, he insists there has been no breakdown in communication with Messi so far.

"With Leo I speak pretty good, pretty much football language. We understand each other," he said. "It's no problem at all."

"I believe I can use my qualities a lot more here than I did in Italy because it's totally different football in Italy."

With Real Madrid having invested so much into their squad this summer, many critics have suggested they are favourites to reclaim the Spanish title from Barcelona, but Ibrahimovic feels different.

"Real Madrid is a top club, they need to win. So what they do (is) they buy players to win," he said.

"But I'm coming already to a winning team so I think the advantage is with Barcelona. They (Madrid) have a lot of pressure. Everybody's waiting for the results."

Boasting an impressive strike-rate at club level and in the youth ranks for his country, Salvio was never expected to pass under the radar of Europe's top clubs.

A switch to Italy and Spain has now been touted, with Lanus president Nicolas Russo admitting that clubs have been in touch.

"We haven't arranged anything with any team, we are going to analyse the offers that we have received and those that may still arrive," he said.

"After that we will decide what we will do.

"There is interest from teams like Fiorentina and Atletico Madrid, both their offers are interesting but we haven't arranged anything with anyone."

"A decision will be taken very soon to satisfy all parties."

Valencia deny Banega switch

Valencia have dismissed claims that Everton have agreed a loan deal and obtained a work permit for midfielder Ever Banega.

Everton boss David Moyes announced on the club's official website that a deal was in place to bring the Argentine midfielder on a season-long loan from the Spanish club.

However, various officials from inside the financially struggling club, and even the player himself, have rejected the claims and maintain that the 21-year-old remains in the Valencia squad.

Valencia communication director Damia Vidagany insisted: "No negotiations with Everton exist or any other club for the loan of Ever Banega. This news is not true."

Following a training session the player, who has been compared by Moyes to Mikel Arteta, told journalists that although he knew nothing of a move to Goodison Park, he expects to leave the club.

"I cannot say anything about Everton. For me the only news is that I will leave Valencia this season," he said.

The player's agent Marcelo Simonian reiterated his client's claim by stating: "I do not have contact with the English club and I have not received an offer on this subject."

Valencia sporting director Fernando Gomez also added weight to the club's stance by insisting: "Valencia will not negotiate the loan of players at the moment."

Barcelona have confirmed they plan to offer new deals to Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta.

The European champions are keen to reward the duo, along with Carles Puyol and Rafael Marquez, with new contracts to secure their long-term futures at Camp Nou.

Barca are believed to be preparing a deal to make Messi the highest earner at the club, while Spanish international Iniesta is also in line for an improved deal.

The Spanish titans have already agreed new deals with goalkeeper Victor Valdes and midfielders Xavi and Yaya Toure this summer, and sporting director Txiki Beguiristain said it was important to "keep the basic unit from last season".

"He (Messi) is the best player in the world," Beguiristain said of the Argentina international at the club's general assembly, adding that they would attempt to bring Spain midfielder Iniesta's salary "in line with current reality".

Salgado relishes Rovers chance

New Blackburn signing Michel Salgado is hoping to put his experience to the test and make an impact in the Premier League with Rovers.

The veteran full-back signed a two-year deal at Ewood Park this week after a successful trial with the club.

The 33-year-old was released by Real Madrid this summer after 10 years with the Spanish giants, in which he won the Champions League twice and four Spanish titles.

Salgado featured in the original 'Galacticos' line-up alongside the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, Luis Figo and David Beckham, and he believes that vast experience will benefit Blackburn.

Special

"Real Madrid is part of my life," he told Sky Sports News.

"I was there for 10 years and won everything there.

"I was in the dressing room with the best players in the world and I had an experience there I never want to forget.

"But now I'm here, and I always wanted to play in the Premier League.

"It's a good chance for me to enjoy the Premier League and make a good retirement - to work hard and try to make something good with Blackburn Rovers."

Sneijder considers Inter move

Wesley Sneijder is thinking over a move to Inter Milan after the midfielder's agent revealed Real Madrid have agreed a deal with the Italian champions.

Holland international Sneijder has been tipped to leave Real over the summer following the Spanish giants' lavish spending spree to capture the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka.

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill has hinted at an interest in the playmaker, but Inter have long been mooted as favourites to sign the former Ajax ace.

Inter now appear to have agreed a fee with Real, with reports putting the figure in the 18million euros bracket (Ј15.5million).

Sneijder's agent Soren Lerby has confirmed the player is now considering whether to move to Serie A after last week stating his intention to fight for his place at Real.

"I have received a phone call from Real that a deal has been done," Lerby told De Telegraaf .

"I have spoken to Wesley, but at the moment he doesn't know what he wants. He will think about that now.

"If he is interested in a move, we will have a meeting and look if they can meet his demands."

Sevilla capture Negredo

Sevilla capture Negredo

Sevilla have secured the services of sought-after striker Alvaro Negredo after capturing the Spaniard on a five-year deal.

The 23-year-old, who had previously been a target of Premier League side Hull City, makes the switch from Real Madrid.

Negredo struggled for playing time at the Bernabeu but impressed while scoring 19 goals during a loan spell at Almeria last season.

Hull has a Ј12million offer accepted by the Spanish giants, but the Spaniard snubbed Phil Brown's club in order to remain in Spain.

A statement on Sevilla's official website revealed that the transfer of Negredo had been a long and difficult process.

Complex

"Sevilla FC and Real Madrid CF have reached an agreement for the striker Alvaro Negredo to join for the next five years," the statement read.

"The player is expected to arrive in the city tonight, and Seville will spend Friday morning having his medical examination. His presentation will then be held at 1pm.

"With the completion of this transaction, the club closes a difficult and complex negotiation that has become one of the soap operas of the summer.

"As it is known in football nothing is black and white and it is only when the pen ink is on the contract that anything is confirmed."

Although Negredo has signed a five-year deal at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium, his former club revealed that the deal includes a buy-back clause.

"Real Madrid CF and Sevilla FC have reached an agreement for the transfer of Alvaro Negredo to the latter club," Real stated on their official website.

"Real Madrid CF has the right to purchase the player back in the next two seasons."

Negredo nears Sevilla deal

Real Madrid striker Alvaro Negredo is reportedly on the brink of signing a four-year contract with Primera Liga rivals Sevilla.

The proposed deal will see Sevilla pay almost €15million for the Spaniard's servicers.

With many star attackers already fighting for a starting position at the Bernebeu, Negredo has had to look elsewhere for first-team football.

He was recently a target of Hull City but elected to stay in Spain rather than make a switch to the Premier League.

Real Zaragoza were also rumoured to be in the hunt for Negredo's signature, but it is Sevilla who have now emerged as the favourites to sign the 24-year-old.

"It looks like it's going well, but nothing is confirmed yet," Sevilla coach Manolo Jimenez said.

"He's a football player that I've always liked. He would be a reinforcement that I had no problem in asking for. If he comes, perfect."

Negredo would have to compete with established strikers Luis Fabiano, Frederic Kanoute and Arouna Kone for a place in the Sevilla starting line-up.

City beat Barca in friendly

Martin Petrov scored the only goal of the game as Manchester City beat Barcelona 1-0 in a prestigious friendly at Camp Nou.

The European champions dominated for long spells of the game, but were caught out by a goal from Bulgarian winger Petrov in the 28th minute.

Barca handed summer signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic his debut and he had a late chance cleared off the line by City.

The result means City win the Joan Gamper Trophy and it provides Mark Hughes' side with another fillip after a successful start to the Premier League season last weekend.

Meanwhile, Barca's domestic rivals Real Madrid crushed Borussia Dortmund 5-0 in a friendly to celebrate the German club's 100th anniversary.

Esteban Granero scored after just three minutes for Real, while Dutch winger Arjen Robben increased the lead moments after half-time.

Gonzalo Higuain and Kaka from the penalty spot scored within the space of three minutes before Raul netted a fifth a minute from time.

Pep has faith in players

Pep has faith in players

Pep Guardiola insists Barcelona's lack of transfer activity this summer does not overly concern him.

While bitter rivals Real Madrid have been busy implementing a big-money rebuilding programme in the Spanish capital, Barca have made only minor tweaks to the side which claimed an unprecedented treble last term.

The only notable arrivals at Camp Nou during the transfer window have been Maxwell and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, both from Italian giants Inter Milan.

Guardiola admits he will keep an eye on any possible opportunities to strengthen his squad, admitting that he is short on numbers, but claims he would have no problem with starting the new season with those already at his disposal.

"There are still a couple of pieces missing," he said.

Reinforcements

"(Sporting director) Txiki (Begiristain) also thinks we're missing a couple of pieces.

"There would be disagreements if I believed we were missing a few pieces and he believed we weren't and that's not the case.

"Last year I had a great squad and this year it will continue to be so. I can't complain and that's not my style neither.

"I'm not worried, if it's possible some reinforcements will arrive and if not they won't.

"This is a squad you can rely on. Just as I felt last year, I feel that we will be competitive this year as well."

Srnas agent rules out Barca

Darijo Srna could be heading to England after his agent all but ruled out a move to Barcelona.

The right-sided Croatia international has been a target for many of Europe's top clubs over the summer, with teams from the Premier League, Bundesliga and Primera Division rumoured to be in the race for his signature.

Barcelona had, at one point, seemed the most likely destination for the Shakthar Donetsk player, with Srna welcoming the approach from the Catalan giants.

But now Srna's agent, Damir Stimac, says that talks with Barcelona have stalled and a deal is unlikely to be agreed before the end of the transfer window.

"Yes, Barcelona wants him, it is not a new story. Some talks took place in June, but only 12 days are left in this transfer window so I think that he will not move to Barcelona," Stimac told Jutarnji list .

Not Easy

"Too many things have to be agreed, (like) his wage, as he is big player and he should earn at least 4 or 5 million euros per season.

"But taxes in Ukraine are lower than in Spain or England so it's not an easy transfer at all."

Stimac now thinks a move to the Premier League could be on the cards, with reports in the Croatian press indicating Chelsea are interested in a transfer.

He added: "But if a transfer happens, than my prediction is that he will not move to Barcelona. It is more likely that he will sign for club from England.

"We are talking about a club, which is right now selling a right-winger and the coach is just in love with Srna's style of play."

Michel in Blues medical

Skysports.com understands Sporting Gijon midfielder Michel will undergo a medical at Birmingham City on Wednesday after the two clubs agreed a fee.

Michel has been a long-term target for Blues boss Alex McLeish and also impressed during the friendly between the two teams at St Andrews earlier this month.

McLeish had expressed an interest in signing the 23-year-old and was hoping the Birmingham board would find the funds to finance a transfer.

It is now understood that the Premier League newcomers have settled on a Ј3million fee with Gijon to secure the deal.

The gifted schemer is due to travel to England on Wednesday to be put through a medical and discuss personal terms with the club.

The deal could be completed in time for Michel to be available for Birmingham's game at home to Stoke City on Saturday.

Croatian defender Marko Babic has joined Primera Liga outfit Real Zaragoza as a free agent.

The 28-year-old moves to Spain after being released by Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin at the end of last season.

Babic, who has won 49 caps for his country, becomes Zaragoza's sixth signing of a busy summer as they prepare for life back in the Spanish top-flight.

He has prior experience of life in the Primera Liga from a two-year stint at Real Betis between 2007 and January 2009.

Babic began his career in his homeland with Osijek and has also taken in a spell at Bayer Leverkusen.

He could yet be joined at Zaragoza by Real Madrid striker Alvaro Negredo, with Marcelino Garcia Toral's men the favourites to land the highly-rated frontman.

Sevilla on Huseklepp trail

Sevilla are reportedly planning to make a move for SK Brann midfielder Erik Huseklepp.

The 24-year-old Norway international put in an impressive performance in his country's recent 4-0 victory over Scotland and Sevilla are now believed to be preparing a bid.

Spanish newspaper Marca quoted a club spokesman as saying it was a matter of when rather than if they would make an offer, and agent Stig Lillejord believes the interest is real.

"We have worked with the Spanish market for a long time," he told VG .

"I am not surprised that we are now seeing concrete interest from clubs."

However, Brann sporting director Roald Bruun-Hanssen will not discuss the situation at this stage.

"We have decided not to comment on anything until we receive specific offers," he said.

"Everything else is just speculation and we will not react to it."

Blues continue Michel talks

Alex McLeish has confirmed talks to sign Sporting Gijon midfielder Michel are ongoing and he hopes the Birmingham City board will finance the deal.

Birmingham have been among the most active teams in the transfer market over the summer, but McLeish still wants to add three more new faces to his squad.

Michel has been a long-term target for the Premier League new boys and he impressed during Gijon's pre-season friendly against Blues last weekend.

Blues boss McLeish remains optimistic of bringing Michel to St Andrews and hopes the board will allow him to spend more money.

"We have made some contact and there are talks going on," McLeish said. "But it depends on the finances.

"We have spent more than the designated budget agreed at the end of the season.

"I had to do that, the board have seen the difference between last time in the Premier League and now.

"I would still like to enhance the squad further, whether the board can see themselves fit to do that, it is their decision.

"He has a lovely touch on the ball and I believe he could be a good asset, but we will be guided by the board's decision."

Meanwhile, Birmingham have received international clearance for Gregory Vignal and the on-loan full-back is in the squad for Sunday's opening game at champions Manchester United.

Barcelona sporting director Txiki Begiristain has hinted that the club may not look to make any further big signings this summer if the homegrown stars continue to impress.

The Blaugrana were thought to be looking to sign a defender, a central midfielder and a left winger, with Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas one reported target.

Coach Pep Guardiola recently said that the squad was too small after the departures of Alexander Hleb and Martin Caceres.

However, after the win against Athletic Club de Bilbao on Sunday, Begiristain responded to reporters who asked him if the squad was big enough by highlighting what was available from the B team.

"It depends on the value we put on our up and coming youngsters," he said on the club's official website .

"If we don't value our homegrown players and the youngsters who've been training with the first-team squad then you could say the squad was small, yes.

"If we aren't bringing in more players, it's because our own youngsters are coming through well.

"We are continuing to work at building the best possible squad. We set our objectives and then try and reach them - sometimes that's possible and sometimes it's not.

"If we look at a range of players, we have to make sure that they fit in and especially that the coaches are convinced by them.

"One of the main advantages to using our own players is that we can also give them game time with Barca Atletic."

Negredo set for Tigers talks

Hull City manager Phil Brown is hoping to hold transfer talks with Alvaro Negredo on Wednesday.

The Tigers boss has revealed that the Real Madrid striker is set to be at the KC Stadium in midweek to watch Hull's Premier League clash with Tottenham.

While in England, the 23-year-old is set to discuss a proposed Ј12million switch to the Tigers.

Hull have been chasing the Spanish ace for some time, but face stiff competition from a number of other sides.

Italian giants Roma have been strongly linked with a move for Negredo, while Primera Liga outfit Real Zaragoza are also keen.

Brown admits he remains cautious as to his prospects of completing a deal, but will be hoping to persuade Negredo that his future lies in East Yorkshire after meeting the talented frontman face-to-face.

"We're hoping that he'll be at the game tomorrow night," Brown told the Hull Daily Mail .

"I can't make a comment on speculation from Spain, we haven't heard anything.

"There will always be a concern until the deal is done but we're hopeful."

Russian outfit CSKA Moscow have completed the signing of Mark Gonzalez from Real Betis.

The deal for the Chilean winger is reported to have been sealed for a fee of €6.4million (Ј5.5m).

The former Liverpool ace has penned a five-year deal with CSKA and is believed to have seen his salary doubled.

Gonzalez, though, insists the move was not motivated by money, claiming he would have been happy to help Betis' efforts to clamber back into the Primera Liga this season.

"This was an agreement decided upon by the two clubs because I was never looking to leave Betis," he said,

"I was prepared to stay and help Betis in the second division."

While Gonzalez insists he was not actively looking for a move, a switch to Russia will provide him with a grander stage on which to push for a place in Chile's squad should they reach the 2010 World Cup.

Fergie - PL still the best

Fergie - PL still the best

Sir Alex Ferguson has insisted that the English Premier League remains the toughest in the world.

His comments come after some have claimed that La Liga has pushed ahead of the English top flight after Barcelona's easy victory over United in the UEFA Champions League, as well as Real Madrid's summer spending splurge, including the capture of Cristiano Ronaldo from the Red Devils.

But Ferguson does not agree with this, especially given the form of United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal in Europe in recent years.

"Some people have said the power has gone back to Barcelona and Real Madrid. I don't know how they can say that. There is no evidence," said Ferguson, whose side begin their Premier League title defence against Birmingham in a game being shown live on Sky Sports 1 on Sunday.

"Over the years the Premier League has become the most competitive in Europe. I have no doubt in my mind about that.

"Barcelona deservedly won the European Cup last season but if you look over the last four or five years, the English teams have shared the real glory of Europe.

"I still feel the Premier League is the toughest in Europe."

New challenge

United must adjust to life without Ronaldo but Ferguson, who has built several successful sides in his time at Old Trafford, is relishing the challenge this presents.

"Most of our players expected Cristiano to leave at some point, so it was not such a great shock," he said.

"That is not the problem. The problem is how we progress as a team.

"We will be a different shape and play in a different way to when Cristiano was here.

"That is something I am looking forward to. I am interested in that kind of progress, to see what a different team can do.

"It will be different without Cristiano."

Rafael van der Vaart has revealed that he turned down the opportunity to re-join Ajax this summer.

The Holland international is currently on the lookout for a new club after falling out of favour at Real Madrid.

He has been informed that he no longer features in future plans at Santiago Bernabeu and is free to leave should a suitable offer materialise.

Van der Vaart only joined Real from German outfit Hamburg last summer, but endured a difficult debut season in Spain.

He is fully prepared to cut his losses and move on, but has made it clear that he will only go to one of Europe's top divisions.

Royston Drenthe has stated he does not want to leave Real Madrid, and believes that his club is in position to surpass arch-rivals Barcelona this season.

The left-sided Dutch player, along with many of his compatriots at the club, is rumoured to be surplus to requirements after Real's summer spending spree.

AC Milan, who have already captured former Madrid striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, are rumoured to be chasing the 22-year-old's signature.

But Drenthe has revealed that he wants to stay at the Bernabeu and compete with the new stars for a place in the starting line-up.

"Real is my family, I want to stay and to take my opportunities," he told Spanish newspaper Marca .

Barcelona completed a Champions League, La Liga and Copa del Rey treble last season and have added Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic to their squad over the summer.

Hungry

The current dominance of Pep Guardiola's side does not seem to bother Drenthe, however, who believes Real's new-found determination will propel them to glory at the end of this campaign.

"They (Barcelona) have a lot of quality but we are Madrid and that's that. We have to be optimistic," he added.

"I think that Madrid this year are going to have more options than Barca, because we are going to have more hunger than them. If the fans saw us train, they'd be impressed. We have an incredible hunger.

"We need to work very hard to achieve it, but at the least you have to try. There are a lot of very good teams but Madrid are Madrid and we have to get back to being the biggest. We have the quality to be able to fight for everything.

"I can't promise anything, but I'm going to give it everything to win many titles. I want to fulfil my dream of winning the Champions League. The Champions League and World Cup have been my dreams since I was a kid."

Tigers pounce for Altidore

Hull City have landed USA international Jozy Altidore on a season-long loan deal from Villarreal.

The Tigers had been waiting on international clearance before completing the deal, but have seen the 19-year-old granted a work permit.

The teenage frontman is now set to head off on international duty, with the US to face Mexico in a 2010 World Cup qualifier on Wednesday, but he will be back in England for the start of the 2009/10 season on Saturday.

Having struggled to make an impression in Spain last season, Altidore admits he is excited by the new challenge awaiting him in the Premier League.

"I'm very excited about the prospect of playing for Hull City," he told the club's official website .

"Hull City is a good club, up and coming, and to have the opportunity to play for them in the Premier League is a great thing.

Graceful

"I'm sure it will take a little while to get used to being here, but hopefully I will be a success here.

"I think of myself as quite a physical player but I can be graceful too. I like having the ball at my feet and I like running at people.

"I'm still very young and there are a lot of things I still need to find out about myself in terms of playing. Hopefully that will come.

"I'm a huge follower of the English Premier League. Most people think this is the best league in the world and I am no different.

"There are so many great players here. Anybody who is anybody would like to get the chance to play here and experience it."

Phil Brown remains optimistic that Hull City can complete a deal for Real Madrid striker Alvaro Negredo.

The Tigers are in talks with the Spanish giants regarding the 23-year-old frontman, with a Ј12million move touted.

Hull have been busy in the transfer market of late, finalising swoops for Stephen Hunt, Kamel Ghilas and Jozy Altidore.

Their success stands in stark contrast to their efforts earlier in the summer, where Brown was frustrated at every turn as he endeavoured to bolster his squad.

The Tigers boss has been buoyed by the spate of recent arrivals, though, and insists he remains in contention to land Negredo.

"It has been four to six weeks since we first started speaking to Real Madrid but it is hard dealing with a club of that stature," he said.

"In terms of European football they are number one, two or three."

He added: "There are times when you think it is 95 per cent certain and then something happens and it's 50-50 again. But we're still working on it.

"In time for the Chelsea game on Saturday? I don't know."

Honour

While Brown is adamant that he remains in the hunt for Negredo's signature, the player's agent has hinted that the Tigers may be left disappointed.

Alejandro Camano claims his client would prefer a move to Roma, although the Serie A giants have yet to reveal whether they would be willing to sanction a permanent move for the striker, rather than a loan switch.

"Negredo wants Roma but...," Camano told Corriere dello Sport .

"We are ready to wait for Roma for another two or three days, (sporting director) Daniele Prade knows all this, as he knows the player's choice would be the Giallorossi shirt. Negredo would be honoured to play for Roma.

"But Real, in the light of offers that they have received, now prefer to sell him.

"And now it is up to the Giallorossi to come into the race, opening talks with the Madrid management.

"But they will have to buy him."

Everton defeated Malaga 2-1 at Goodison Park on Friday as home supporters cheered Joleon Lescott's every touch.

The defender is a target for Manchester City and has told Toffees boss David Moyes that he wants to leave Merseyside.

But Lescott received a hero's reception from home fans as he started the match, in which Louis Saha and Leon Osman's goals were enough to overcome a Jose Juan Luque free-kick.

Everton were ahead after 14 minutes when Saha slammed the ball home from eight yards after goalkeeper Gustavo Munua flapped at a Leighton Baines cross under pressure from Tim Cahill.

Four minutes later, Leon Osman guided the ball wide of Munua from Steven Pienaar's pass for the second.

Everton were comfortable until the break but conceded from a stunning 30-yard free-kick goal from Luque three minutes into the second period.

Lescott played the full 90 minutes and was left in no doubt about the crowds' feelings when the Gwladys Street fans sung his name at the end.
