Sylvinho Set To Sign New Barça Deal

Sylvinho joined Barcelona from Celta Vigo in 2004, making over seventy appearances for the club despite the fact that he has often not been a regular first choice, and will be rewarded for his efforts by a new one year contract that will take him through until the summer of 2009.

The full-back's current deal is set to expire in June, but having shown himself to be able cover for Eric Abidal throughout the campaign, the Barça board felt that it was in their interest to extend the Brazilian's stay at the Camp Nou for another year.

The offer of an extension is a remarkable turnaround from last summer, when Sylvinho was placed on the transfer list ahead of the current season, with Barça feeling that he was surplus to requirements following the signing of Abidal. When no suitable offers were received for his services he was integrated back into the squad and has certainly proved his worth as a member of the group.

Sylvinho is considered to be a popular figure inside the Barcelona dressing room and the expectation is that he will have no qualms putting pen to a paper in the coming days to confirm the extension to his stay in Catalunya.
