The victory moved Villareal one point above Barcelona with five games left to play and Pellegrini has no doubts as to what his players should be aiming for in the remaining weeks of the campaign.
"We have taken an important step towards our objective by regaining second with today's triumph and it is now our obligation to defend the position," he told reporters after the match.
Pellegrini indicated that Villarreal's objective at the beginning of the season was to win the league, but with now looking out of reach, he is content to settle for second.
"Now, after thirty-three we are in second place and that must be our objective beyond breaking records," he affirmed.
"We have five matches left to secure the place and are hope is to keep hold of our advantage."
As the interview drew to a close, Pellegrini indicated that he feels that it is important to keep a generally settled team in the final weeks of the season and is pleased that the good physical shape of his squad looks set to allow him to do so despite having suffered a long campaign.
