Racing had the better of the play in the first period at the ONO Estadi, but wasted a number of good opportunities to take the lead, eventually succumbing to an excellent display of counter-attacking football from the Islanders.
"We clearly dominated in the first half, created clear chances and had numerous opportunities to score. But when you waste such opportunities, you are always running the risk that your opponents will punish you by scoring and that is what happened today," he told reporters after the game.
Marcelino was surprised to see the approach that Mallorca took in the game and although he felt his team should have got something from the match, he was quick to congratulate Gregorio Manzano's side for a slickly executed performance.
"Mallorca played like an away team on their own pitch. Long balls forward from the goalkeeper and a lot of quick counter-attacks, taking advantage of the serious errors that we committed. They took advantage of their chances and it is necessary to congratulate them for that reason," he affirmed.
The result leaves Racing trailing Atlético by just two points going into the final four games of the season, although they do still have to play fellow top four hopefuls Sevilla in one of their remaining matches.
