Cup Win Will Not Earn Reprieve For Koeman

Valencia sit just six points above the drop zone going into Sunday's match away to Athletic Bilbao, with Marca suggesting that Koeman would have been fired today had there not been such an important game to prepare for at the weekend.

The club's cup run was the only thing keeping Koeman in his position after a terrible run of league form that has seen them win just one of their last nine games, but with the trophy now won, the board see no reason to keep Koeman in charge any longer than necessary.

A defeat to Athletic on Sunday would almost certainly seal Koeman's fate, with the board wary of the fact that the Dutchman has lost the support of the majority of the players, and that it was more the efforts of the likes of Ruben Baraja and Carlos Marchena to rally the troops that produced Wednesday's cup triumph.

Sacking Koeman with another two seasons still left to run on his contract would be likely to cost the club in the region of €7million, but it is understood that such a figure does not represent that much of an obstacle to the club, as relegation would certainly cause a far greater financial hit, something that the board are becoming increasingly worried about while Koeman is still at the helm.
