Gay extends Zaragoza stay

Gay extends Zaragoza stay

Jose Aurelio Gay's efforts in 2009/10 have been rewarded with a new contract at Real Zaragoza.

The experienced coach took the reins back in December 2009, stepping into the void created by Marcelino Garcia Tonal.

Gay had been in charge of Zaragoza's reserve side up to that point, but adapted quickly to life in the top job.

A 6-0 defeat to Real Madrid in his first game in charge did not bode well, but results improved steadily thereafter.

The Zaragoza board made it clear that they were willing to stick with Gay until the end of the season, and he repaid their faith by securing Primera Liga survival.

Dream

In the end the club finished 14th in the table, five points clear of the drop zone.

Such success has convinced Zaragoza that Gay is the man to take the club forward and they have duly rewarded him with a new one-year deal.

"For me it fulfils a dream, of being able to start a project with the team with whom I've been most happy," said Gay.

"As such I'm very pleased to have renewed my contract."
