Llorente dreaming of World Cup

Llorente dreaming of World Cup

Fernando Llorente is hoping to convince Vicente del Bosque that he is worthy of a World Cup spot.

The Athletic Bilbao frontman has been a regular in the Spain national squad of late, but accepts he cannot take his place in the fold for granted.

Places on the plane to South Africa this summer are limited and the 24-year-old knows he faces stiff competition for a seat.

Llorente accepts that Fernando Torres and David Villa will occupy two of the attacking berths in Del Bosque's plans, but hopes he will be selected as back-up for the first-choice strike pairing.

"My dream is to play well for my club and make the Spain squad for the World Cup," he told EFE .

"This will not be easy, though, because there are a lot of good footballers in Spain.

"Villa and Torres are sure to make the cut, but I hope to be third on the list.

"In order to make sure I make the cut I must score goals for my club and convince coach Del Bosque I am worthy."

Favourites

Llorente is confident Spain can add to their Euro 2008 success by landing the global crown, but admits the weight of expectation on their shoulders has proved troublesome in the past.

"At the moment Spain are better than Brazil, but we have to show that on the field," he added.

"To be the favourites is a good and bad thing. It means we have to give maximum concentration to every game and avoid any accidents.

"During the Confederations Cup we slipped up against USA at a key stage of the competition.

"I believe we will have learnt from that lesson and that we will be better prepared in the future."
