Nihat Makes His Return For Villarreal
Nihat was one of the shining lights of his nations fantastic run to the semi-finals of Euro 2008, but he tore a thigh muscle during the tournament and has struggled to get back to fitness.
He has already declared himself as Villarreal's 'first winter signing', and Pellegrini will no doubt be delighted to have one of his key players available again.

Guti And Ramos Reach Real Madrid Landmarks
Whatever anyone says about Guti there is no doubt that the Spanish midfielder has been a loyal footballer throughout his career.
Whilst he has often drawn attention for his looks or his off the field activities, tonight, if he plays against Getafe, he will be taking part in his 500th game for Real Madrid.
He first played for the capital club back in December 1995 against Sevilla and tonight he could become only the tenth player to reach the 500 mark for Los Blancos.

Real Madrid might be in so called 'crisis' but coach Bernd Schuster was remarkably calm as he spoke at a press conference today.
The German has been under pressure following some poor results, but today he told AS that he is feeling better after back-to-back wins against Recreativo Huelva and BATE Borisov.
"The best medicine in football is winning," he mused.
"Against Recre and BATE we did not play brilliantly but we got the victories. We recovered our defensive security and brought the lines closer together. We are returning to where we were before."
Certainly Schuster will have been relieved with the wins, which seem to have at least delayed any possible dismissal for the German until a later date.
Amidst the chaos though there has also been a rumour that Ramón Calderón has offered the players a bonus if they win seven matches in a row, something the coach doesn't believe will motivate them.
"I don't think that bonuses will win matches," he declared.
If money doesn't, then Schuster had better know what does, as his Real Madrid team face off against Getafe this weekend in La Liga.
The match, where a win could see Los Blancos close the gap on Barcelona at the top of the table, has already been added to by Getafe coach Victor Muñoz, who accused Madrid of playing 'ugly' football.

Racing Coach Muñiz Hails Winning Spirit After Comeback
Racing Santander looked for all the world like they were going to be overrun by PSG tonight after going down 2-0 early on, but somehow the Spanish side fought back to draw the game.
After losing to FC Twente and drawing with Schalke they still have a chance of qualifying with this result and coach Juan Ramón López Muñiz praised his side after the game.
"We are feeling great," he told Eurosport after the match.
"It would be unjust not to value the work of the players, which was excellent, the playing of the ball, the professionalism and the winning spirit. We were losing 2-0 but the ones that were playing were us."
Certainly it was a remarkable come back from Racing after going behind so early and they could have even nicked it at the death with a late chance from a free-kick. Muñiz did acknowledge that his side could have won but also seemed more than content with the result they had.
"We must think about the great game we just played, the winning spirit that carried us when we were 2-0 down," he declared.
"We have made errors and that is costly against a team with the quality of PSG. They took advantage of them but we reacted, we worked to try and win the game.
"We have to try to extend our good run of form. We deserved the three points, in the last moment we had a chance to win it 2-3, but we have still left with a good result. Even when we were losing 2-0 I was satisfied because we were playing well."

Despite being two of the more prominent names in this stage of Europe’s second tier competition, both find themselves languishing at the bottom of group H without a win between them so far. Indeed, both were handed damaging defeats by group leaders CSKA Moscow, and the free-flowing Russians have virtually sealed their passage through by firstly destroying the Spaniards 3-0 last month, before Brazilian record signing Vagner Love tormented Feyenoords’ defence before helping him himself to a double in a 3-1 win.
The latter’s defeat is testimony to the nightmare the Rotterdam club have faced this season. Coach Gertjan Verbeek has watched in agony as his ailing squad have tumbled from league runners up in 2006 to Eridivisie also-rans. To be blunt, their performances are not of a level representative of such an established name in European football.
Remember thanks to the likes of Pierre Van Hooijdonk and Jon Dahl Tomasson, De club van het holk triumphed in this very competition in 2002, but since then the club have added just a solitary Dutch cup to the trophy cabinet, and serious financial constraints have led to any top talent being sold on to make ends meet. Dirk Kuyt and Salamon Kalou are two notable departures in the past few years.
The dire situation has given Verbeek a hugely difficult task, and he has had to call on a number of veteran players in an effort to bolster his squad. Former Deportivo hero Roy Makaay is the clubs top scorer, but at 33 years old is hardly one for the future. Combine this with Van Bronckhorst (33), Michael Mols (37), and the returning Jon Dahl Tomasson (32), and it reveals the backbone of an ageing outfit. Domestically, they are in trouble; just six points above the relegation play-offs and they find themselves in a class down from the likes of Ajax and PSV. In the clubs’ centenary season, it is difficult to escape the air of underachievement that encircles the Feijenoord Stadion.
Deportivo can relate to the problems of their opponents to a certain degree. Once they were such a big-spending powerhouse they were tagged SuperDepor, but the club has been unable to recapture the type of form that witnessed its galaxy of stars win the Primera Division in 2000. They simply do not have the resources to chase La Liga glory, but Miguel Angel Lotina has received many plaudits for the way his side have performed this season.
The likes of Lafita and Jose Guardado have given standout displays as the Galacians have leapt to seventh in the league table after an impressive run of five wins in their last six games in all competitions. Lotina’s men are exceeding expectations, and as the excellent performance against Athletic Bilbao showed, they are capable of playing attractive football in the process.
This is likely to be an end-to-end encounter as both sides must go for the win to maintain their chances of progressing. Despite three teams from each section making it through, Feyenoord have already played twice in the group, losing convincingly in Nancy along with their home loss to CSKA. Deportivo could effectively end Verbeeks’ men European run for the season by snatching the points on Thursday.
However, Feyenoord are on something of a mini revival in the league, picking up seven points from their last three matches. Plus, football is unique in the scenarios it pits players and teams against on a regular basis. Wouldn’t it just be typical of striker Roy Makaay to pop up and find the net in front of the Riazor faithful who used to adore him?
He scored 79 goals in 133 games during his time there, and the beautiful game often throws up this type of situation where former suitors become current enemies. Whatever the outcome, it should make for an absorbing contest.

It's been a long time coming but Atlético Madrid look as though they are going to make their time in the Champions League count this season.
The Spanish side assured their qualification into the last16 with a 2-1 win over PSV this evening and speaking afterwards, coach Javier Aguirre believes this is where they belong.
"After so many years out of Europe it was important to do well and to get off to a good start," he told Marca.
"The club took a step forward today. We are one of the 16 best teams in Europe and we deserve to be here. We are one of the bigger clubs and, year after year, we much reach this stage."
At one stage however, it didn't look as though Atlético would even make the Champions League proper after a 1-0 loss to Schalke in qualifying back in August. Aguirre says that now they are here though, everything is good.

Loyalty and love aren't words used much in the modern game of football, but it's fair to say that Daniel Aranzubia feels a little bit of both towards Athletic Bilbao.
The goalkeeper spent fourteen years at the Basque club before moving to Deportivo La Coruña this summer, and after helping his new club to beat his former one at the weekend, he is mixed in his emotions.
"I am more happy than sad but it does aggrieve me to beat Bilbao and, above all, to see them in such a difficult situation," he told Marca.
"What was important for me and the group though was to get the three points and I am very happy we managed to do that."
Aranzubia played a major part in beating Bilbao by keeping out a penalty from Andoni Iraola and also making some key saves from their strikers. He says that the penalty was tough for both players and that he was congratulated by the Bilbao staff afterwards.
"The penalty was difficult because in the same way that I know where he likes to shoot, he knows that I know that, and in the end there is just a multitude of thoughts and I managed to get lucky," he mused.
"I was in the dressing room and I greeted everyone and they all congratulated me afterwards."

Iniesta Back Training For Barcelona
Andres Iniesta is almost certainly the best player in the world not to be nominated for the Ballon d'Or, and indeed many have questioned why the hugely influential Blaugrana midfielder is not on the shortlist for the prize.
He has been simply outstanding since guiding Spain to glory at Euro 2008, and his creative prowess has been sorely missed in midfield alongside his partner-in-crime Xavi.
Club doctors had initially put a six to eight week rehabilitation period on the muscle tear suffered against Basel on November 4, but now just three weeks after the injury the 24-year old has returned to light training.

Getafe might have in-fighting to contend with before the clash with Barcelona this Sunday, but their opponents have a worry too, the fitness of Lionel Messi.
The Argentine, who has been sublime the last few games for Barça, finished training today with a niggle in his right leg and he is now a serious doubt for the match at the Camp Nou.

La Liga Preview: Numancia - Atletico Madrid
Numancia and Atletico Madrid will be hoping to build on impressive victories when they meet at Los Pajaritos on Sunday night.

There have not been many moments of joy for Numancia this season, but last weekend brought smiles to their faithful as they enjoyed a fantastic 4-3 win at Espanyol. It was only their third win of the season, but more importantly, the occasion marked the first points Numancia have picked up on their travels, a sign that they are coming to terms with the top flight.
Having won La Segunda last season, most experts expected Numancia to be the promoted team that would fare the best in the big time, but the opposite has transpired, with Sporting Gijon and Malaga looking considerably more comfortable. The glaring problem for Los Rojillos is their defence, with their tally of 24 goals conceded being the second highest in La Liga. As a result, they find themselves in 17th place, just one point away from the drop zone.
A glance at Numancia's squad reveals that it is composed solely of Spanish players, with Croatian coach Sergio Kresic being the only foreign influence. While this undoubtedly contributes to team unity, the lack of quality imports is certainly telling. Numancia lack that extra touch of class and creativity that the very best players from other shores can sometimes bring, and this could be their downfall come the end of the campaign.
Consistent Inconsistency
Atletico Madrid are one of the most unpredictable teams ever to exist, but their inconsistency is always guaranteed. This season has been no different, with two draws and four defeats leaving Atleti in sixth position, the sort of frustrating standing with which they are all too familiar.
Having finally reached the Champions League after a lengthy absence last season, many expected Atleti to take the next step and seriously challenge for the title this year. While it is perhaps too early to write them off completely, it is hard to imagine any sane person putting money on them making up the 11 point gap to leaders Barcelona. The added strain of a Champions League campaign is also likely to take it's toll.
The root of Atletico's problems stems from a three week period in which they lost to Sevilla, Barcelona and Real Madrid. They have only suffered one loss apart from those (to Valladolid), indicating that they have enough power to overcome the "lesser" opponents. They will need all their strength to prepare them for what is traditionally a hostile environment for visiting teams.

Sergio Ramos 6.5 - Saw a lot of the ball going forward, but could not produce the opening that the coach would have liked and was withdrawn in the second half.
Capdevila 6 - Was able to push forward when possible, but was not as active as the two that appeared on the other flank.
Puyol 7 - An assured presence at the back who does not always receive the credit he deserves for his strength and organisation of a back four.

Spain saw off Chile at El Madrigal thanks to a first-half penalty from David Villa and then two second-half strikes, one from Fernando Torres and one from Santi Cazorla.
Chile will still be fuming with the decision that saw them go behind as Albert Riera appeared to fling himself to the floor to win a penalty. However, they could have no complaints about the second, which was a brilliantly taken goal by Torres, or the third, which took a fortunate deflection on it's way in from the boot of Cazorla.
Despite the scoreline the South American side were not outplayed totally and they matched the Spaniards for a lot of the game, but failed to ever break down their solid defence.
Vicente Del Bosque will be pleased with the performance from his team, who looked confident throughout the match and in the end won comfortably.

The battle of the midfield was proving to fairly dogged and Marcos Senna was extremely lucky not to see a yellow card as he flew in with challenges on the Chilean players. Indeed, the first player to see the inevitable card was in white, as Cristián Álvarez tripped Xavi in the center of the pitch rather recklessly. Just minutes later and Spain had an opportunity to take the lead as Albert Riera, realising he wasn't going to get the ball, flung himself over Ismael Fuentes in the box, earning a penalty for the home side. Villa duly converted, much to the frustration of the well populated away section, and Spain had the lead with just seven minutes left in the half. Chile tried hard to get back into it before the whistle but they failed to do so and the referee was surrounding at half-time by angry Chileans telling him what they thought of the penalty.

When he did try and tackle he managed to pick himself up a booking and with just ten minutes gone in the half Del Bosque took him off to be surpisingly replaced by Fernando Torres. One Liverpudlian soon became two as Alvaro Arbeloa came on to replace Sergio Ramos and the right back created a create chance as he cut the ball back to Cazorla to smack just wide of the goal.
Spain were looking a lot more threatening with Torres on the pitch and with twenty minutes gone in the half he scored the second goal with a typically great finish. Xavi popped a ball out to him on the right and he dummied to shoot before turning back and bending a shot around the 'keeper with his left foot from about 8 yards out. It was no more than Spain deserved for some enterprising attacking play and they began to play it around with confidence after the goal.
With the lead improved Del Bosque gave a debut to Fernando Llorente with twenty minutes left - the Basque coming on to replace the always consistent Xavi. Llorente showed just what he can offer to the side early on too, as he first headed over from a ball into the box and then chested down nicely for a midfielder to pick up. The game was beginning to get spread a little and Spain were finding more space behind the back of the Chilean defence. Llorente very nearly added a third but he couldn't divert a cross from Cesc Fabregas into the goal from close range.
Even though the game was effectively over as a contest Chile continued to fight hard for the ball and they were unlucky to concede a third late on in the match. Cazorla struck a shot from about 25 yards which seemed to be covered by Bravo but it struck the foot of Carlos Carmona and spun wickedly past the 'keeper. It was a fortunate goal but it was hard to argue with the scoreline, bearing in mind Spain had been by far the more composed side. With just three minutes left after the goal the referee soon called a halt to proceedings and yet another solid performance from the European Champions.

Pellegrini: I Want To Coach Chile One Day
There is no doubt that in terms of money spent and success gained, Villarreal are up there with the best in Spain at the moment. Last season they finished ahead of Barcelona and this time around they are competing just as well in the league, mainly thanks to their coach, Manuel Pellegrini.
The Chilean took over back in 2004 and since then he has turned them into a title challenging side, who have perhaps looked the part this year more than ever. Speaking to Marca, he says that he still wants to achieve more with his team, though.
"We have had a great year and we are all very happy, but our ambition is that in the next game we maintain our level and therefore I continue with the ambition and desire to continue with this side and keep it growing," he mused.
"My work in Spain has pleased me very much. Five years in this football for a South American coach is not easy but, by more than just the individual product, I am very pleased with what the team has achieved."
Pellegrini has been hailed as one of the best coaches in La Liga recently and hence it is little surprise that Villarreal want to renew his contract, something that would make him proud.
"It is true that here we do not have the same budget as some clubs but with ingenuity and work we have closed the gap," he declared.
"For me to remain is a great happiness because I am very comfortable and it will always give me pride."

Van Der Vaart - Two Wins And It's All Good!
Real Madrid might be being described as in crisis at the moment, but according to midfielder Rafael Van der Vaart all they need to do is win their next two games.
The Dutchman was talking to AS when he lent his support to coach Bernd Schuster and said that if they win twice everything will be perfect.
"The logical thing is that people get angry about losing games but I do not think that the situation is the fault of the coach. If we win our two next games everything will be perfect again," he declared.
The words from Van der Vaart might be described as either brave or foolish, bearing in mind the seemingly underlying problems at the club, but there is no doubt they do need to win. Up next for the defending La Liga champions are Recreativo Huelva this weekend and then they travel to Getafe at the end of the month.
Speaking about his own personal happiness Van der Vaart said that he is sure he made the right decision to join, and being subbed off is part and parcel of being at a large club.

Mancio led the Nerazzurri to their third straight Scudetto last season and he has been rewarded for his efforts.
The coach scooped the award for his hard work and dedication at San Siro.
Inter almost threw away the title, but the former Lazio striker ensured it remained in Milan on the final day of the season.
The ex-Inter man has now dedicated his achievement to those still at the club.
"I won this award thanks to the players," Mancini is quoted as saying by Sky Sport Italia.
It's the first time the coach has won the prize. Fiorentina tactician Cesare Prandelli took it last season.

The Rojiblancos were rampant today, comfortably defeating Lotina's side by four goals to one in a distinctly one-sided contest, and the former Espanyol and Real Sociedad coach was not impressed by the way his players conceded defeat so easily.
"We cannot say many positive things today. Atletico won well, they played with intensity and we played like we did not have to win here. Atletico played at a faster rate and we made too many mistakes," he said.

The Rome derby is one of the top games in the Serie A calendar, and probably the most explosive, passionate and gripping local derby in Italy. Some would even argue that it is the best derby in world football.
In order to find out exactly what the world’s biggest clash is, we asked a global panel of Goal.com editors to sell the greatest local derbies from their country or region. Yesterday we showcased all the top derbies from Europe, today we present those from The Americas, Asia and Africa.

Boca Juniors versus River Plateis the biggest derby in the world because it is not only seen as a football match between Argentina's two most popular clubs, but a clash between teams from two socially diverse backgrounds - the rich (River) and the poor (Boca). It is more than a game, as for the people of Argentina, belonging to Boca or River is a way of life, whether you're rich or poor it doesn't matter. On matchday the entire nation is at a standstill anticipating the outcome of the game. In order to show their loyalty for their team, fans from both sides always generate a truly breathtaking and unique atmosphere in the terraces, whether that be at La Bombonera or El Monumental.
El Superclásico is the most intense derby in the entire world, and the fact that so many legendary players have emerged from both teams increases its credibility. Players always fight until the death, even if at times this means resorting to violence. The day after the derby players from the winning side are treated like national heroes, while those from the losing side have often confessed to be afraid to walk on the street, because of possible abuse from their demanding fans.

Combined, both clubs account for almost 90% of fans throughout Uruguay, and the derby has a rich tradition dating back to 1900 when Peñarol beat their rivals 2-0. Since then both teams have won three Intercontinental Cups each but, even if both have struggled for international recognition in recent years, El Clásico is still as passionate as ever. The rivalry between both teams is so great that a few years back players from both teams were sent to prison after a massive-scale brawl. The fact that Peñarol are generally associated with the working-class people, while Nacional tend to be linked with the elite adds an extra-dimension to the game. Each time Nacional and Peñarol clash Uruguay is in chaos, and the position where both teams find themselves in the table is irrelevant, as 70,000 fans are always guaranteed at the legendary Centenario stadium in Montevideo.

Chileans are amongst the most passionate supporters in the world, and this enthusiasm multiplies on derby day, when both sets of fans generate an intimidating atmosphere for each other. Whenever Colo Colo and 'La U' enter the field on derby day they are received by confetti, smoke bombs and fireworks by their loyal supporters. Traditionally the rivalry is played with lots of intensity, and unfortunately violence is very common both on and off the field, especially when both teams meet in crucial championship deciders.

The Los Angeles Galaxy versus Chivas USAis the biggest derby in the world because, well, it's the only derby in the top soccer league of the United States, which is a world superpower. This derby also features the world's most famous soccer player, David Beckham, so it must be the best. What other local derby features Posh sitting in the stands? He recently said that the highlight of his 2008 season was the Chivas USA-Galaxy rivalry.
Of course, the truth is that the concept of a derby is foreign to many Americans. The U.S. is so spread out that most MLS teams are hundreds of miles away from each other. Only Chivas USA and the Galaxy share a stadium and a city and have only done so since 2005, which Chivas USA joined the league. Beckham's Galaxy team may have won the local title this year - dubbed the ‘Honda SuperClasico’ by the sponsors - but the Galaxy failed to make the playoffs to compete for the league title. So it's definitely not the world's biggest derby, but it's a start.

The city of Guadalajara, Mexico's second most important city, is divided between these two teams. When they face off against each other, little importance is given to the lone Atlas title, won half a century ago, or to the 11 championships claimed by Chivas. All that matters is faithfulness to the club colours. Both teams are famous for fielding local youth products, such as Chivas goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez and Atlas's rising star Jorge Hernandez, who grew up exposed to the bitter rivalry every day. From the their earliest moments, they know what it means to wear the jersey and uphold city pride when they step on the field.

The Tehran Derby between Persepolis and Esteghlalis the biggest derby in the world because it means so much that referees are usually drafted in from other countries to officiate this match, one that brings all of football-crazy Iran to a halt. Traffic in Tehran also stops as over 100,000 men (not women) crowd into the Azadi Stadium to watch the Reds (Persepolis) take on the Blues (Esteghlal). It doesn't matter how badly the season is going, a win in this match can, and has, saved a coaches job. Ony Kolkata rivals this in Asia.
East Bengal versus Mohun Bagan is the biggest derby in the world because it is a clash of two sub-cultures and is an extension of the societal divide that still simmers in most, if not all, parts of Bengal. East Bengal have been traditionally supported by immigrants from Bangladesh whereas Mohun Bagan's supporters are from Bengal itself. The differences between these two cultures are quite stark and although the animosity has been somewhat tempered down the years, the Kolkata derby provides a fissure through which the latent hatred, scepticism and cultural contrasts rush to the surface. A Kolkata derby is always attended by nearly 120,000 supporters and the atmosphere at the Salt Lake Stadium is electric. On derby days the stadium is blazed by fireworks, thousands of painted faces and myriads of banners, several of which can be quite provoking.

Labelled the ‘Nation Derby’, these two teams are the biggest and richest clubs in our league right now, and in the current season both them are still fighting for the league title. Shandong have 56 pts and Shanghai 55 pts, and there are just four rounds left. Before the match, the fans of both clubs will start to abuse their rivals over the internet. During matchday there will be some banners in the stadium teasing the opposition. Of course, more policemen are needed to protect the visiting teams.

Persija is the older, superior club. They have won five national titles during the amateur "Perserikatan" era, and were also crowned 2001 champions after the Indonesian league turned pro in 1994. Northern neighbours Persitara, on the other hand, are the less fortunate little brother. They currently face enormous financial problems. Due to security concerns last July, the derby was forced to be played outside of Jakarta without any spectators. Persija won the match 3-1.

The Soweto Derby in South Africa involving Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs is the biggest derby in the world because football is the sport for the country's black majority, with both the Pirates and the Chiefs being the national toast. This derby may be less than 40 years old but, ever since Kaizer Motaung broke away from the Pirates to found his own club (Chiefs), matches between these clubs have taken on a new life of their own. While the Chiefs are 'The Glamour Boys' and the best supported club in the land, Pirates draw their own support from the rural poor. These games are known to have attracted crowds of 100,000.
The derby has been marred by two major tragedies. In 2001, a stampede at Ellis Park in Johannesburg left 43 fans dead. Ten years earlier 42 supporters lost their lives in similar circumstances. The common enemy for both set of fans is the police - a symbol of repression of the blacks during the dark days of Apartheid. Otherwise, these matchups are played in a very friendly atmosphere, full of song and dance and complete with the most outrageous fan gear - from long, noisy trumpets known as ‘vuvuzelas’ to bogus sunglasses, masks and helmets.
The Cairo derby between Zamalek and Al Ahlyis the biggest derby in the world because such are the mounting emotions on offer that the games are considered too big for Egyptian referees to handle and so European match officials are brought in. The fierce rivalry between the Cairo clubs took root in 1911 when Zamalek were formed to rival their older neighbours. While Ahly are the people's club, the middle class in society identify with Zamalek.
Don't rule out violence during clashes between the Red Devils (Ahly) and the Whites (Zamalek), which attract regular crowds of 100,000 at the Cairo International Stadium. Fights break out in the stands and also on the pitch. During the 100th Cairo derby, for instance, attacker Shikabala was fined and suspended by the Egyptian FA for his violent reactions to taunts.
