Mallorca to appeal Euro ban

Mallorca to appeal Euro ban

Real Mallorca have announced their intention to appeal Uefa's decision to exclude them from the Europa League.

The Islanders secured continental qualification last season when they finished fifth in the Primera Liga.

However, a Uefa ruling on Thursday stripped them of their place in the competition as it was decided that they did not fulfil the admission criteria.

Mallorca are currently in voluntary administration, having accrued debts totalling some €85million (Ј71.4m).

The club took that decision in an effort to sort out their finances, and European qualification would have allowed them to bring in much-needed funds.

Harmful

With that in mind, the club's lawyer has revealed that an appeal will be lodged once more is known about Uefa's decision to impose the ban.

Luis Huerta said in a statement released on the club's official website : "This decision is seriously harmful to the club's administration process as there were a series of revenues expected...that would have allowed payments to creditors."

Coach Michael Laudrup, who has only recently been installed at the helm, is confident a compromise can be reached which will allow Mallorca to line up in the Europa League this season.

"I am optimistic," said the Dane.

"It doesn't seem logical that this could happen. I don't think we'll stay out."
